The NFLPA has new leadership heading into next season. The guys discuss what it could mean for the future of the league.
Transcript
00:00I wanted to circle back specifically to NFLPA stuff, because I know that that's a group that means a lot
00:07to you.
00:08Yeah, and I think they made a mistake.
00:10Do you?
00:10Yeah.
00:11How the hell you voted?
00:12So let's give the news.
00:14They just elected J.C. Tretter as the new executive director.
00:18Who was the person who basically slid the guy, what his name was, Lloyd Howell in, and now he just
00:25slid his ass back in.
00:26He's a problem.
00:28I'm going to tell people straight up.
00:28And all those guys that went out there and just shot him on through there, you better get ready, because
00:35you've got some problems on your hands.
00:36He was a part of all the little collusion and hiding that from the players and all that type of
00:42stuff.
00:42He shouldn't be the damn president.
00:44No.
00:44I mean the executive director.
00:46Why do you think he won?
00:49Because all the people he had put in position on that damn little board, it's all his boys.
00:56Eight months ago, J.C. Tretter said, I have no interest in being the executive director.
01:01I have no interest in being considered.
01:04Lie.
01:05I'm going to send you something.
01:07I want you to check it out.
01:09You'll change your mindset on a lot of stuff.
01:15You and I may disagree on this, but I wonder if you more agree with me now.
01:20I think NFLPA leadership has been under serious questions for a while now, and I think this continues that.
01:28And I think the fact the league is pushing for this 18th game, and you've got to have your house
01:36in order when they start pushing, because what do you want back?
01:42Money.
01:43Yeah, but guess what, though?
01:44Concessions.
01:45He's the same dude who sat there and was just allowing stuff to go.
01:50Listen, I believe J.C. Tretter is basically a guy who works for the NFL, but he's in the NFLPA
01:56right now.
01:59I believe he was put in place by the BAM people from the NFL.
02:05It sure seems in hindsight that Lloyd Howell was when you started looking at where the money was coming from.
02:10J.C. Tretter was the one that slipped Lloyd Howell in and said that nobody need to know, just the
02:15executive, which I'm French is going to vote on him.
02:19I'm agreeing with you.
02:19Like, you were part of getting this last dude put in that had ended up being very shady, and there's
02:26real questions about private equity connections to buying teams.
02:29I mean, that is not in the best interest of the players.
02:33Tretter at least was an NFL player.
02:35He played offensive line in the NFL for eight, nine seasons.
02:39I mean, he started a number of games.
02:44I don't know, man.
02:46The league generally is always going to have the upper hand on the union in football because there aren't guaranteed
02:53contracts, and there's a hard salary cap.
02:56And because your labor pool is so significant, right?
03:00Basketball, baseball, they have the strongest unions in American sports.
03:03Their labor pool is so much smaller, and neither sport has a salary cap.
03:09The union has so much strength.
03:11Football's very, very different.
03:12So you don't need no slime bags in office, right?
03:15Yeah.
03:15Basically, bam.
03:16That's what you got now.
03:20We'll see what happens.
03:22Maybe it all works out.
03:22Maybe he wasn't the problem.
03:23Maybe he was in – I don't know.
03:25I find this all –
03:26He's part of the problem.
03:28I find it all pretty surprising.
03:30Was there somebody you wanted?
03:32Anybody who I wanted.
03:33I didn't want him.
03:35It was guys that are very, very capable and have all the criteria, be it, that were working there.
03:43They got ran off.
03:45A lot of people got ran off because, you know, when you come in with your news people and the
03:49people that notice something's going wrong, they speak up.
03:52Oh, they got released and got sent off and pushed out.
03:56And now you come back in after those people are gone.
04:00He's a snake.
04:02I mean, what – the John Thompson quote that you told me that has always stuck with me, especially working
04:09in media, various places.
04:11Oh, yeah.
04:12We've seen lots of turnover, lots of different bosses, lots of different things.
04:15What did Big John always say?
04:18Any time somebody – every time there's different changes and the same people stay in place, they're the problem.
04:27It's – I don't know, man.
04:29Interesting times for the NFLPA.
04:31And you know the league is going to try to reopen this negotiating window to get this 18th game in.
04:37The league is also going to be able to promise more money because they're putting together –
04:41they're putting together this package of international games that they're going to sell off.
04:45Like, there are a lot going on here, man.
04:50Lloyd Howell said it, too.
04:51Oh, you think, hey, everybody loves more football.
04:55If you brought in Lloyd, he was saying it, who was going to be saying it, too?
04:58Tretter.
05:00I just saw something online that I wanted to play.
05:04And I'm going to confess, we know there's this flag football game coming on Saturday.
05:09You can watch it on Fox, I believe, Jaden Daniels, Tom Brady, Jalen Hurts, Kevin Hart.
05:15Anything Fanatics does, they tend to kind of blow it out.
05:19Like, they go all in, and it's the Fanatics flag football contest from Los Angeles.
05:25And there's going to be a lot of attention paid to it.
05:29But they just had a press conference for this thing.
05:32If you remember, originally, this was supposed to be played in Saudi Arabia.
05:36Obviously, everything going on in Saudi Arabia, they're not going to be able to do that.
05:39They moved it to Los Angeles.
05:41But they had some press junket for the game.
05:43Okay.
05:44And here is Tom Brady kind of going at – busting chops, but going at Jaden Daniels.
05:52I can see Jaden on the field once for the first time in about seven, eight months.
06:05I'm just happy his mom let him play.
06:12Tom Brady, since he got roasted and got so publicly roasted,
06:19I feel like he has emerged as somebody that is just willing to kind of go at anybody all the
06:25time.
06:26And Jaden, if you watch the video of this, seemed to handle it fine.
06:30He was just kind of laughing.
06:32Yep.
06:33You think that pissed him off?
06:35He said he hadn't seen him on the field in like six, seven months.
06:38Yeah.
06:38Cool.
06:38We love that.
06:39As Commanders fan, he's been working out, taking care of stuff.
06:42Well, he was making fun of missing time.
06:44Jaden knows what it is.
06:46Jaden laughing at him.
06:48But you know what?
06:49He takes everything to heart.
06:51You'll never see it in his face, but you're going to see it in his play.
06:56You think the mom joke pisses him off?
06:58The what joke?
06:59Do you think the mom joke makes Jaden mad or possibly Regina mad?
07:04If mama mad, the son's going to be mad.
07:08Point blank.
07:09What is going on behind us?
07:12I paint something.
07:13I don't know.
07:13They're hanging up something.
07:16It's very easy to keep working here.
07:19I don't know.
07:20Tom Brady just kind of goes at everybody.
07:22I think we can look beyond that.
07:25Yeah.
07:25I think Jaden's laughing about it.
07:26I think if it was like Jimmy Garoppolo joking around like that, it would be a very different reaction.
07:33Yeah.
07:34It's Tom Brady, though.
07:35And Tom got him involved with this whole deal.
07:36There's also a big old check involved.
07:39Because you remember when it first happened, Tom said, I wonder if his mom would let him play.
07:44And remember Regina said, yeah, he'll be there.
07:46He can play.
07:47You don't remember that from the beginning?
07:48Yeah.
07:48Yeah.
07:49So it's a whole little deal.
07:50I think it's a whole little.
07:51They're promoting this thing.
07:53They got to do little stuff.
07:54Make people think things.
07:55That's how it goes.
07:59That's the status of the – I think we're about – the ball is about to be tipped.
08:04The beginning words of one final moment.
08:08Who sings that?
08:09Lionel Richie?
08:10The ball is tipped.
08:12It is Luther.
08:12You're right.
08:14Man, you're getting like Pete, man.
08:17One shining moment.
08:18What'd I say?
08:19One final moment?
08:20Can't get your black people together like Pete?
08:24He called Glass Night in the Pips.
08:25What did he call him?
08:27Now, in his defense, that was a man that –
08:29No.
08:29But what did he call him?
08:31It was Glass Night in the Pips.
08:33I can't remember.
08:33But it was – oh, he was so off.
08:35He was very off.
08:36Very off.
08:37White Bryant, could you sing one shining moment for me?
08:39Please don't, Brian.
08:40Please.
08:41The ball is tipped.
08:42Man.
08:45Jeff, I think you got to play that, dude.
08:47We could use hearing that.
08:49Set the mood.
08:50All right.
08:51We're looking.
08:51First game, Ohio State, Texas Christian.
08:54Jamie Dixon coaching the Horned Frogs of TCU.
08:57Who coaches Ohio State now?
08:59I don't even know.
09:00White Bryant will.
09:00They've kind of run through some coaches since Thad Mata got bounced there.
09:05This is an A-team for announcers.
09:08Grant Hill, Bill Raftery, and Ian Eagle.
09:12I know the kid, Bruce Thornton.
09:14You don't see many seniors.
09:16I think he's played his whole career at Ohio State.
