01:00This is my first time in Tanzania during the Great Migration.
01:03This has got to be one of the natural world's most epic spectacles.
01:08Triggered by the rainy season, over two million animals are on the move.
01:18Followed by thousands of hungry predators.
01:22I'm here to film the fastest of them all.
01:26Now is the best time of year to film Cheetah.
01:28They're going to be making the most of this endless supply of food that is just walking right through their
01:33territory.
01:35But this doesn't mean their lives are easy.
01:39Globally, the cheetah population has fallen by 90% in the last century.
01:51I want to understand why it's so hard for the fastest land animal on the planet to survive.
02:04It's estimated only 300 cheetah live here.
02:08And I've got just four weeks to find them.
02:11I'm going to need some help.
02:13Expert wildlife guide Baz Kessie drives our truck.
02:17From this vehicle, I'll use my drone and long lens camera.
02:22In a second vehicle, a Dennis Millel and Tom Walker.
02:27They're the world's best team for filming high-speed hunts using a gyro-stabilized camera.
02:38This herd of zebra, they're all standing very alert and all staring sort of towards that direction.
02:44So we're kind of using all of their eyes to triangulate the position of the thing that they're looking at.
02:51Must be over there somewhere.
02:57Yeah, go ahead.
02:58We found a mom with two very small cubs on this side.
03:02Okay, copy that.
03:04Well, that is very, very exciting news.
03:07Our other car has found a mother cheetah with two very, very small cubs,
03:10which is not something that you see often, so we're going to go check them out.
03:1595% of cheetah cubs don't survive for adulthood.
03:21Their biggest threat is being killed by lions and hyenas.
03:26Okay, I got it. Yeah, here's good.
03:29So cheetah mums keep them hidden.
03:36Oh, my word.
03:37The cubs are tiny.
03:41It's just these little balls of fluff at the feet of mum.
03:45I just see the tops of them bouncing every now and again above the height of the grass.
04:07They are so small.
04:10You can see their coat pattern is completely different to mums.
04:14They've got really dark sides and then a grey, silvery top.
04:17The theory is that that coloration makes them look like honey badger, a ferocious little animal that have big sharp
04:24teeth, sharp claws, and a really nasty attitude.
04:28The thinking is, if the cubs look like honey badgers, maybe big predators will leave them alone.
04:37If they're teeny tiny, they can't be more than a month old.
04:41It just means that mum's got a tough task of looking after them and feeding them.
04:49Because if she wants to go and hunt, she has to leave them by themselves.
05:10Oh, that's the gazelle, yeah.
05:15Gazelles have a top speed of 50 miles per hour.
05:20Cheetahs can sprint close to 70, but they can only sustain it for a short distance.
05:28Every time the gazelle turns, she freezes.
05:47She's just trying to close that gap before she sprints.
05:56It's a stalking masterclass.
06:05She needs to get within 30 yards undetected to have any chance.
06:18She's just going to explode any second.
06:38She's just going to explode any second.
06:43She's faster than the drone.
06:44Look at her go!
06:53She got it.
06:54She got it.
06:56It's almost as big as her.
07:00She was so patient in that stalk.
07:02She was just closing the gap, closing the gap.
07:05And I thought, she's got to go.
07:06She's got to go.
07:07But she knows she has to get really, really close.
07:10Because although she's the world's fastest land animal,
07:13these gazelles are still very quick.
07:15She got within the critical distance and then stamped on the accelerator.
07:18And I cannot believe how fast these cheetahs are.
07:23Today, she'll be able to make milk for her cubs.
07:29But not all hunts are successful.
07:32And every time she leaves them, she takes a risk.
07:37No wonder only 5% of young cheetahs make it to adulthood.
07:45The challenges cheetah face in this vast landscape don't stop there.
07:54To understand more, we need to catch up to the migration.
08:08But following in the footsteps of these cheetah magnets
08:11has its downsides.
08:13Oh, come on.
08:16I suppose behind every great migration
08:20is an even greater pile of wildebeest dung.
08:25That is going to stink.
08:40After a few hours of searching,
08:42there's movement away from the herd.
08:47This is unreal.
08:48We've got a group of three adult male cheetah all together.
08:52It's often said that lions are the only social large cat
08:56where adults form groups.
08:58But that's not exactly true
09:00because male cheetahs do form groups
09:03and they're called coalitions.
09:04Once fully grown males leave their mothers,
09:07they typically remain with their brothers,
09:09forming a coalition.
09:11They're trying to jump on top of each other.
09:15Together, they can defend their territory from rival males.
09:19And hunting as a team,
09:20they should be able to take down bigger prey.
09:31Hopefully, they've had some practice.
09:35Male cheetahs tend to have shorter lives than females.
09:39Fights with lions and other males can be deadly.
09:44And even their prey can be dangerous.
09:48Tom, just as a heads up,
09:49there's a herd of zebra ahead of them.
09:51Yeah, we've seen that.
09:54Three male cheetahs make a formidable group of predators.
09:59But zebra are no easy target.
10:01One kick could be lethal.
10:13There's definitely some zebra stallions in there.
10:17Got to pick their target wisely.
10:34Okay, they're going.
10:42Here they go, here they go.
10:47As the herd scatters,
10:49the coalition look for a vulnerable target.
10:52Youngsters should be an easier option.
10:57Foles mum's blocking.
11:02Got it?
11:04Aye.
11:11Be careful of the zebra's kick, cheetah.
11:14Get that to the face,
11:15and that's lights out.
11:19And the rest of the herd's slotting in.
11:24And the cheetah have given up.
11:26That's game over.
11:28That was unreal.
11:30They all just slotted in right behind the mum and foal.
11:33Yeah.
11:34Yeah, they can use the kicks to keep the cheetah away.
11:40You know, this just goes to show,
11:43your hunting for cheetahs is not easy,
11:45even if you're three big males.
11:47The prey is very, very challenging.
11:49And today, the might of the zebra,
11:52their herd defence, their kicks,
11:55they were enough to keep the cheetah
11:56from getting one of their babies.
12:02An injury to one of the coalition
12:05would put all of them in jeopardy.
12:09Some risks just aren't worth taking.
12:17Life is full of tough decisions for these cats.
12:30The migration might be the best time of year
12:33to film cheetahs,
12:34but it comes with its challenges.
12:37So with the rains on the way,
12:38we need to be able to film in rain or shine.
12:41With a normal camera,
12:42if it starts raining, you're in big trouble.
12:44You get drops on the lens and you can't film.
12:46But on Tom's camera,
12:47he's got a very special bit of equipment
12:49that solves that problem.
12:50It's called a rain spinner.
12:51I'm going to show you how it works.
12:52So, Tom, if you can turn it on.
12:59OK, you ready, Tom?
13:02Here we go.
13:04Oh, it's completely clear.
13:06Oh, it works so well.
13:08Right.
13:11My solution is a lot less high-tech.
13:14I mean, drones famously aren't very good in the rain.
13:17They tend to fall out of the sky
13:18because the electronics melt.
13:20So what I've basically spent the last couple hours doing
13:22is filling up all the little vents and holes
13:25with silicon
13:26in the hope that that makes it waterproof.
13:28Only I'm not going to be chucking any water on this
13:30because I'm not sure if it's going to work,
13:32but fingers crossed.
13:40The next morning,
13:41we track down the migration
13:43along their 900-mile round trip.
13:48Oh, cool.
13:49And we find some new faces.
13:55Oh, wow.
13:56It looks like a mother
13:57with two big cubs.
14:02This is very exciting
14:03because cubs of this age
14:05are a great sun to follow.
14:07They're really bouncy,
14:09really playful.
14:10And most interesting to me
14:12is that this is the age
14:14they really start to learn to hunt from Mum.
14:16They're still slightly smaller than Mum
14:18and growing out the last traces
14:20of their silvery neck fluff.
14:34Morning, Clayton.
14:37The cubs are in full stalk mode.
14:50Oh, they're chasing the cattle egrets.
14:53Oh, they're chasing the cattle egrets.
15:08In just a few months,
15:10the cubs will be expected
15:12to make kills on their own.
15:22Hey, that...
15:25That's Mum calling the cubs.
15:27Playtime is over.
15:30Mum's going to show them how it's done.
15:38Adult zebra and wildebeest
15:40are too big for this young family to hunt.
15:43But there are also lots of gazelle fawns.
15:47Small and slow.
15:49They make ideal prey for beginners.
15:57The cubs should watch and learn
15:59how their mum selects a target.
16:14But this cub didn't get the memo.
16:20Is that the cubs chasing the zebra, Baz?
16:22Yeah, it does the cub.
16:25Oh, the cubs chasing the zebra.
16:30Chaos.
16:32World of Eastern Zebra flying everywhere.
16:43The cub is regretting its decision.
16:49Oh, the zebra's chasing the cub now.
16:54Tables have turned.
16:56Run, run, run.
18:24ou qu'ils veulent faire quelque chose qu'ils veulent,
20:37OK, mère a vu quelque chose...
22:10Oui.
22:17ї c'est qu'on a vu tout le monde.
22:20Vous êtes venu au même eu chercher.
22:22Il peut mettre des hyenas.
22:30Ensuite, ils ont vu ce dél Bruce.
22:37oh it's a big hyena
22:40mum has a big problem
22:41yeah
22:42their thousand pound per square inch bite force
22:46means they can crush bones
22:48you phyena want to get it
22:50you gonna get it
22:56this hyena is close
22:59what are you gonna do mum
23:02are you gonna fight or are you gonna run away
23:08mum and the cubs all looking
23:14mum's up mum's up she's going towards the hyena
23:19go on mum
23:37yeah nice job mum
23:45these cheetahs have built for speed not fighting
23:48so all she can do is kind of push and bluff the hyena away
23:51because if they were to get into an actual scrap the hyena is much bigger it's much more powerful
23:59the strategy is just to keep this hyena away so that the cubs can feed on the kill
24:11you can hear lots of hyenas out this way
24:14all cackling all laughing
24:18mum's actually very lucky
24:19the other hyenas they sound like they're on a kill of their own
24:25lions that way as well
24:31well i don't quite believe this mum has successfully defended her kill from this hyena
24:37and she might have gotten lucky that more hyenas didn't come in
24:41but she showed some pretty amazing aggression to say get away from my kill
24:55mum was able to provide today
24:57but soon the cubs will have to learn to hunt for themselves
25:10as the day heats up we find the male coalition scouting for prey
25:18they'll jump from one lookout to the next until they find a target
25:31compared to the cheetah mothers they take a fearless approach
25:40but it's not without risk
25:43there's a lion under the tree so they may bump into it
25:48copy that thanks
25:53these boys look like they want to climb this tree
25:55but what they don't know and we know
25:57is that there's a lion at the base of it
26:01they're about to get a big shot
26:11the lion's up
26:17oh big male
26:20one two three four male lions
26:24that was a bit of a shock for those cheetah
26:26but fortunately the lions have not pursued
26:32did you see them all just go
26:33yeah they're like we are checking out
26:40goodbye
26:42there are just three hundred cheetahs here but over three thousand lions
26:50in a fight with these bigger stronger predators
26:54the cheetahs would have no chance
27:06the coalition's search for food continues
27:10i really hope to see them succeed before our time runs out
27:26cheetahs lives are much harder than i thought
27:28even inside the protection of the serengeti national park
27:33the pressure to survive can drive cheetahs to roam outside the protected area
27:39cool spot
27:40where they face other problems from human activity
27:44thanks
27:46hello hello
27:48i meet up with kelvin munisi from the serengeti cheetah project
27:52oh yeah always ready good to meet you man
27:55i want to find out how his research helps tackle these challenges
28:01it's not long before we see some familiar faces
28:06kelvin this mother and cubs this family is actually a family we've been following
28:09do you know her
28:11yes we do know her and she's called adora
28:14adora
28:14adora yeah
28:15and do you know how many litters she's had in her life
28:18so this is her second litter
28:20the first litter she had was in 2020
28:22and that didn't go so well
28:25because she lost all her cubs
28:26oh yeah yeah it's sad
28:28and uh last year we actually found her with uh five cubs
28:32five
28:32yeah yeah
28:33so she's only got two now so she's lost three of her cubs
28:36yes so she's lost three of her cubs
28:38oh that's so sad
28:39i guess that's the reality of living in a landscape
28:43packed full of predators that are bigger than you
28:45yeah exactly yeah
28:47she's actually a good mom
28:48for a cheetah with five cubs to remain with two cubs
28:52uh it's it's still a good mom
28:54in such a harsh environment
28:58kelvin's field work has two parts
29:01first he maps where each cheetah is roaming
29:06and then he needs to collect their dna
29:09in the least invasive way possible
29:13so you spend a lot of time staring at cheetahs hoping
29:16that they're yeah they're gonna do a number two
29:19yes yes
29:25kelvin she's she's squatting down there
29:28is she gonna go to the bathroom
29:30she's pooping she's pooping
29:32yeah yeah yeah brilliant
29:34kelvin usually when i'm working with scientists
29:37filming their amazing work
29:38i offer to help and get involved but i think on this occasion i'm good
29:43it's all it's all you it's all you
29:44you should leave it to the professional food collectors
29:54i think he's got it yeah he's got it
29:58i've never been so excited about locating a wild animal's poop
30:09it may not be glamorous but kelvin's work is critical in monitoring cheetah territories
30:18we are going to extract dna so that we can establish how diversified is the gene pool
30:25this can tell us how connected the cheetah population are
30:29from serengeti population all the way to the maasai mara population
30:33and also other protected areas within the eastern africa landscape
30:37mixing these groups is vital
30:39but it's becoming more difficult for cheetahs to move
30:42as humans build farms and towns in their path
30:46the solution is reducing human activities on the wildlife corridors
30:50so that we can increase connectivity between these small populations that we do have
30:57kelvin hopes this information can be used to manage land in a way that supports cheetahs
31:04connecting territories and giving them the space they need to survive
31:18the next morning we find the male coalition again
31:29they're with a herd of wildebeest
31:31and it looks like this could be the chance to hunt they've been waiting for
31:37but they're not the only ones
31:39there are the boys there's the wildebeest there's a bunch of lions over there
31:45this could be chaos
31:49yeah tom we've got the boys they're about 300 meters from a herd of wildebeest with lions nearby as well
31:59so we've got this big herd of wildebeest and the boys are on this side of the herd
32:03what they don't know is that there's a pride of lions on the other side that we passed coming here
32:08so if they choose to run into that wildebeest herd
32:12i think they might get a really nasty surprise
32:17stay down boys stay down you do not want to pick a fight with a bunch of lions
32:26do you think they've seen them no they're very close
32:38oh the wildebeest are running
32:44whoa big boys
32:56look at the size of that dude on the right
33:01oh my word he is beautiful
33:04look at his mane blowing in the wind
33:14well the cheetah boys got very lucky there that pride of lions has not spotted them and they're heading off
33:18that way
33:23but they've lost the element of surprise the wildebeest herd are really spooked because of the lions
33:33we've yet to see the coalition have a successful hunt
33:42they can't wait any longer
33:54looking for a target
33:56looking for a target
34:14okay they've spotted a car
34:21they're moving through the herd kind of looking around with their heads up they aren't going
34:24fast they're looking for a target but it's just too dense with all the herd running together it's a very
34:29dangerous thing to run into picking the right target at the right time is a matter of life and death
34:44squatted a big wildebeest
34:49it's a yearly
34:58oh it's got back into the herd great herd defense
35:03okay they switched targets they found another one
35:06you still have it yeah he's coming in front
35:27i think he's got it
35:33well that wildebeest put up a very good fight
35:40finally they can enjoy a well-earned meal
35:44but a successful hunt doesn't always lead to a full belly
35:57lions coming into the kill yeah buzz
36:03there's three of them and one of her
36:08she's not sure surely they're not going to fight her for it
36:13if those guys they realize it's not safe they will walk away
36:17so right now they're just trying to eat as fast as they can
36:35she takes the kill
36:39and that is why it is very hard to be a cheater around here
36:43you do all that work and then a lion steals your food
36:49and now these boys are going to have to hunt all over again back to square one
36:58the competition from bigger predators is relentless for cheaters
37:07but giving up isn't an option
37:25yeah go ahead clearly rain's coming so we're gonna put the rain spinner on
37:30okay copy that i'll switch to the wet drone as well
37:44despite the rain the coalition stick with the herd
37:49good luck out there little drone
38:01so i started pouring the rain and the cheaters are still hunting so the show must go on
38:11they're just marching straight into the rain
38:17and the drone is still flying
