00:08It's, it's Joel's mugshot whenever he went into prison.
00:15He's doing a smirk.
00:16That's, like, that's the smirk he would, he would give me a lot.
00:26I see you shaking.
00:28Yeah.
00:30I shake a lot, but, um, sometimes I can control it.
00:39Is it seeing this picture?
00:41Yeah.
00:42It's, it's hard seeing the picture.
00:45And, like, it's hard, like, sensing the evil that he had in him.
00:51And, you know, it brings back a lot.
01:16Christy, come to the door!
01:17No!
01:18No!
01:19I don't want to go!
01:21I don't want to go!
01:23You don't want to go!
01:27We're here now.
01:28We're here, okay?
01:37I, um, I do remember it.
01:41Um, you actually hear me break the glass.
01:47And you, you, you hear me say help me.
01:51And, um, I, I remember it very clear.
01:56We got you an ambulance on the way.
01:58We got someone on the way to you.
02:12I did know I was going to die.
02:14I knew I wasn't getting out of that cage.
02:17You know, I was just laying there, bleeding.
02:19And there's blood all over the place.
02:22And, um, I didn't think I was going to make it out of there.
02:26I was so scared.
02:30I cheated death, you know?
02:58I was so scared.
03:22It's Joel and I.
03:24And I look so happy.
03:26Because at that, at that moment, I was.
03:29You know, he was being nice to me.
03:31And it was, it was nice when he was being nice.
03:36This right here is the Joel I loved.
03:41And I guess that's the Joel I didn't want to lose.
03:47Like, I didn't think, like, the things that happened in the future was going to happen to me.
03:54I really didn't think.
03:56Like, to be honest, like, I couldn't have imagined what was he capable of.
04:03I honestly didn't think he would, he would do the things he did to me.
04:28I was about 16, 17 whenever I first saw Joel.
04:33He was my brother's friend.
04:36He would drive by on his motorcycle on a wheelie.
04:39And I caught my eye.
04:42I found him very attractive.
04:44He would make me laugh.
04:46Like, he caught my attention with that.
04:48Like, he would always make me laugh.
04:50There was an attraction there, but it was, like, we, I didn't entertain it.
04:57I didn't, I didn't think about dating him until, like, years, years later.
05:19That's my baby.
05:21That's my son Christopher.
05:25He just got his final tap in this picture.
05:30My daddy passed away from cancer in 2013.
05:34And then nine months later, my son was diagnosed with leukemia, which is a blood cancer.
05:42And it, it was really hard.
05:51You know, I didn't know if, um, my son was going to make it.
05:56And I, you know, I prayed.
05:58I prayed to God to save my son.
06:03I was at my lowest, and I was alone.
06:05I was scared.
06:07And that's when he kind of crawled his way in.
06:20Me and my son were in the hospital for one of his hospital stays.
06:25Joel ended up messaging me.
06:27He would just ask me how Chris was doing, and how am I doing, how am I handling it.
06:33I needed somebody to be there for me, and he was that person.
06:39You know, like, when we first started messaging, I was sitting on the couch, looking out, um,
06:46by the hospital window, crying, and, you know, looking at my son, and it was, it was hard.
06:52And then I, you know, I hear a ding, and then I started, like, smiling at my phone.
07:00And he's messaging me.
07:01Hey, beautiful.
07:03Oh, my goodness, I seen the picture you posted today.
07:05You look so beautiful.
07:07And so that's what got my attention, you know.
07:11That's where I, like, started falling in love with him.
07:16After we started dating, he would come to the hospital with me, and he would actually stay in the hospital.
07:23He was my knight in shining armor.
07:26He would always call me his queen, and he would always say, you know, every king needs his queen.
07:32And, you know, my kids loved him.
07:36I did feel, it fell very, very hard for Joel.
07:40And it wasn't just, like, he was, like, my best friend.
07:46Like, he knew me.
07:47I knew him.
08:06We were actually having a great day.
08:08And we were out swimming, and we were having such a good time.
08:12Who are you?
08:13And then he thinks it's hilarious to grab my shoulders and just hold me under.
08:24And I'm sitting here, splashing the water, trying to get him off me.
08:27And I was trying, you know, to kick my legs, but my legs were wrapped around him.
08:31And he had my, had me pressed up against him and holding my shoulders down.
08:40When I was underneath the water, I really couldn't see very much.
08:44But then when I, when he let go, he has, like, this huge smile on his face.
08:50His eyes were, like, lit up.
08:53And he's just laughing so hard.
09:01Joel thinks it's hilarious.
09:04Like, he, like, fed off of it, basically.
09:11It wasn't just, like, giggles and everything.
09:15He enjoyed it.
09:17He, like, it, he got high off of it.
09:19It was his reality.
09:21And he just was, like, beaming.
09:24It, like, it made him so happy.
09:27Him causing me so much pain.
09:46One day, him and I were at my mom's.
09:49And he ended up messaging this girl.
09:56And supposedly, you know, she's just a friend.
09:59And I had an issue with that.
10:03And I'm, like, why are you in the bedroom messaging her?
10:09And that is when he took and grabbed me by my shoulders.
10:14And he was yelling at me in my face.
10:16And then all of a sudden, he took and just headbutted me.
10:20And then knocked me down.
10:25And I felt this instant pain in the middle of my forehead.
10:30And he got on top of me.
10:34I was, I was scared when he was on top of me.
10:37He was angry.
10:39And, like, his eyes, they go black.
10:44And to this day, that, his face still haunts me.
10:48I wasn't looking at Joel.
10:50I was looking at that evil demon that he had in him.
11:00After he headbutted me, it was a totally different person.
11:04The person I'd seen on top of me.
11:08And, you know, I'm, I'm hurting.
11:10And I'm scared.
11:12And he has this smirk on his face.
11:15And it was pure evil.
11:18I knew right then I was, I was looking at the devil.
11:24But then my nephew ended up banging on the door.
11:27And then that got Joel off of me.
11:33And Joel ended up leaving.
11:53When, when it was good, it was great.
11:56And that's what I was holding on to.
11:58I did see, like, hope in him.
12:02I didn't want to give up on him.
12:04You know, I, I loved him enough Tuesday.
12:07And I just, I just couldn't give up on him.
12:12He was saying he was sorry, that it won't happen again.
12:15He loves me.
12:17He can't live without me.
12:19I was still hoping that, you know, maybe he will come around.
12:22Maybe things will be different.
12:24And just give him a little bit more time.
12:26You know, I don't want to give up on him just yet.
12:30I loved him.
12:31And I'm like, you know what?
12:33I'm going to fight for this love.
12:49We would be laying in the bed and, you know, watching our phones.
12:54When he, he would just be over there just watching violent videos.
12:58Joel would laugh and he was like, look, bae, look, bae, he got his jaw broken.
13:07Or, look, bae, look, his blood, blood is like coming out of his head.
13:11He, one hit, watch this hit.
13:14All it took was one hit to open his skin up.
13:18I honestly think he liked the gore of it.
13:20Like the blood and someone being in pain.
13:24Like he loved when somebody was in pain.
13:27And I look at it and I'm like, that's just not funny.
13:30Like, what are you doing?
13:31And I look at him and he has like, like, you know how when you see a newborn puppy, you're
13:38like, it's so cute.
13:39You're smiling.
13:40That is how he was like.
13:42But it was gruesome.
13:47It gave him relief.
13:50Like, you know, watching somebody get pain calls to them.
13:54Like, he enjoyed it.
13:58Like, I felt disgusted and like, like, I thought he was demented to look at that and like, get off
14:06on that.
14:07They're just wondering, you know, um, what was wrong with them.
14:25He started telling me that his grandfather was mowing one day and he found little bunnies in like a tall
14:35area of the grass.
14:36And he picked the bunnies up and then, um, as his grandfather came around with a lawnmower, he threw the
14:43bunnies in front of the lawnmower and they got ran over.
14:49And he enjoyed seeing like the bunny parts and the blood splatter out from the lawnmower.
14:57And Joel just thought it was funny.
15:02At first, Joel's laugh was like his normal laugh.
15:05And then like, after he saw like the disgusted look on my face, it turned into like an evil laugh.
15:14Like, you know how you see in the cartoons, like the bad guy, they laugh.
15:18That's how he laughed.
15:20Joel loved violence.
15:23I think that causing somebody pain, like, like you can control how bad that person hurts.
15:31And I think he really enjoyed, like, like the pain of it.
15:37There was like two sides to Joel.
15:40There was the caring, sweet, but then there was a demon Joel.
15:44And it seemed like the longer he was the sweet Joel, the harder the demon would come out.
16:03I really honestly thought my love could fix him.
16:06I thought my prayers could fix him.
16:09He would be asleep next to me.
16:11And I would pray for whatever, you know, he's fighting, that he can overcome it.
16:18And I told God to please, like, help Joel get through this.
16:23Like, Lord, I don't know what all he's going through.
16:26But I also understand, like, understand something is obviously going on with him.
16:31That he's battling demons that I don't know of, that he's not speaking of.
16:37And I wanted Joel to get better.
16:40And I asked God to make Joel better.
16:45And the Joel that I fell in love with will eventually be the Joel that he is.
16:52But in reality, the Joel that I fell in love with was just a mask.
17:08One day we were driving down the road, and he was just being ugly to me.
17:14And I told him to pull over because I didn't want to go home.
17:20And I undo my seatbelt and open the door.
17:25And as I get the door opened, he takes off.
17:37This is the road rash I got because of Joel.
17:42I took this picture because I kind of wanted, I guess, to remind myself of what he did.
17:49And, like, I remember him, like, laughing, that evil laugh and that smirk he had on his face.
17:56And when I slipped, that's when I got the road rash.
18:13It was, like, his videos that he used to watch, like, the gore and, like, the blood.
18:20And that's what I guess he got so excited for because his videos that he used to watch and loved
18:26to watch happened in real life.
18:28And he got to see it firsthand.
18:33He took me to the hospital.
18:35He told me to tell him I wrecked a scooter.
18:38And that's what I did.
18:40He never apologized.
18:43He thought it was funny.
18:45So why did you cover for him?
18:47I just, I just didn't, I just didn't want him in trouble.
18:56And so I lied.
18:59Joel knew I loved him.
19:01And Joel knew I wasn't going anywhere.
19:05And no matter what he did, I was always going to be there.
19:17One thing we haven't talked about is the tattoo on your neck.
19:21Yeah.
19:24It says always with his initials right here.
19:29I did make a promise to myself.
19:31I'm like, well, I'm never going to leave you.
19:33I love you.
19:34I would tell him, be like, I love you.
19:37He's like, I love you too.
19:39And he would say forever.
19:40And I would say always.
19:43And I personally don't like neck tattoos, but he wanted it on my neck.
19:49He's like, get it on your neck.
19:51You know, I was like, no, you know, let me do it on my arm.
19:55And he's like, no, get it on your neck.
19:58I really honestly believe that he made it on my neck so other people can know that I guess
20:06I'm his property.
20:07You know, I belong to him.
20:09And in his sick way, it was like a pleasure for him because not only did he mark me, he
20:17marked me on my neck where he would strangle the life out of me.
20:31The kids were mostly with me.
20:34Occasionally, they would go to their dad's.
20:37He would get them every other weekend.
20:40And, um, like I remember one day I was at home and I said I was leaving and I was
20:46going
20:46to go to my mom's.
20:47And then Joel comes in and he got in front of me.
20:51He was like, no, you're not.
20:52I'm like, yeah, I am.
20:54I'm not letting you go.
20:56And he ended up pushing me to the ground.
21:01And then he straddled me.
21:04And he ended up starting choking me.
21:07His eyes went dark.
21:09That face still haunts me in my dreams because I still see him.
21:15And, um, like I pass out.
21:27And then I wake up and, um, I was very confused because when he first knocked me down, I had
21:34my pants on.
21:37And, of course, I don't remember him taking it off.
21:40I don't know how long I was out for.
21:41I don't know what he did to me.
21:44But the only, you only have your pants off for one reason.
21:48So.
21:50He really enjoyed being able to, I guess, control, to control me like that.
21:58And, um, he got pleasure from it.
22:01Um, so he started doing it more often.
22:05It got to the point where it was, it was at least three times a week I was getting strangled
22:09until I was unconscious.
22:11And some weeks it was more.
22:18It was like an addiction that he needed, that he enjoyed, that it got him high, that I,
22:26he could push me this close.
22:28And, you know, I didn't die.
22:29And, like, you know, he would hold my throat a little bit longer each time.
22:33And then it got to the point that I was passing out.
22:37Um, and, you know, you think about it.
22:39Like, you know, he's strangling me.
22:42And it's just a moment of seconds before you pass out and then you die.
22:47And, um, that, that's scary.
22:51It was, it was really scary.
22:54It was torture.
22:56And, like, he got off on the torture.
22:58And he liked the fact that he was, like, he was in charge of it.
23:03I do believe that he was seeing how close I can get to death.
23:06Every time he did, like, when I was looking in his eyes, it was like a demon I seen.
23:14Like, I didn't see Jill Whopper.
23:17It, it was pure evil.
23:33I wanted to tell my mom what was going on.
23:36I wanted to tell my brother what was going on.
23:39Um, like, I felt bad because they thought I didn't want to be around them.
23:43And that's not the case at all.
23:45Like, I wanted to go around them and I wanted to explain what the, like, all the hell I went
23:50through.
23:50And that I was going through.
23:53But I couldn't.
24:02Quite a few times he would say that he would hurt my mom.
24:05Just to hurt me.
24:07Like, that was, like, the only way he could hurt me is to hurt her.
24:17He was always afraid that my mom would be able to talk me out of staying with him.
24:23And so he really didn't like me talking to her.
24:26Especially, like, before, if I was talking to her, he had to be right there.
24:33I think he was more afraid of what I was telling my mom.
24:36He's, like, you know, blowing his cover, I guess.
24:39It was, like, damn it if I do, damn it if I don't.
24:43I figured, you know, if I stayed, they could end up killing me.
24:47But if I left, it's not just me anymore, it's my mom.
25:01I've had it with you, Joel.
25:02I'm not doing this anymore.
25:04One day, Joel and I were arguing.
25:07And I told him I was going to leave.
25:10And he's like, no, you're not.
25:12I'm like, yes, I am.
25:13I'm tired of this, Joel.
25:15I can't do this anymore.
25:16I'm leaving.
25:17Well, I'm in the bathroom.
25:19And there's no way for me to get out.
25:22And he got mad.
25:24And he knocked me down.
25:25And I fell into the tub.
25:27And that's when he turned the water on.
25:32And he was holding the shower head in my face
25:35and making the tub fill up with water.
25:40He's holding me under.
25:41And I'm like, oh, my gosh.
25:43I'm going to die.
25:50I was afraid I was going to drown.
25:53And my kids were there at the time.
25:55I was scared.
25:57Because I didn't want my kids to see me that way.
25:59But then my son started knocking on the door
26:01and said, what's going on?
26:04Hello?
26:07That's when he stopped.
26:08And it was like the fun.
26:11Loving Joel.
26:13He took and threw me a towel.
26:16He didn't do anything in front of anybody.
26:19Joel would only hit me behind closed doors.
26:29It seemed like each time he was, like, physical with me,
26:34like, the next time he was going to talk that,
26:37he was honestly pushing to see how far he could actually take it.
26:44He had to go a little further,
26:45or he didn't get enjoyment out of it.
26:48Like, he wanted more and more and more.
26:51And each time got rough and scarier.
26:55And, like, you know, he would hold my throat a little bit longer each time.
26:59He was seeing how close I can get to death.
27:12We went fishing a few times.
27:14And then all of a sudden,
27:16he comes up behind me and grabs me at my shoulders.
27:21And it was, like, right here in my ear.
27:24And that's when he sits there and says that, you know,
27:26he can dump me in this pond and nobody will ever find me.
27:30And, like, turns me to face him.
27:34So I'm looking at him.
27:36And he does this little smirk he would do.
27:40And he told me that he was going to kill me and dump me in a pond
27:44and nobody will ever see me again.
27:46He's going to say that I got hooked on drugs
27:48and that I ran off with a dealer.
27:50He's like, they're never going to see you again.
27:56And then he let me go.
28:00It was like nothing happened.
28:02Like, he was just telling me,
28:03oh, the fish are biting over here.
28:09And, you know, my heart kind of, like, fell out of my chest.
28:16And, like, I wanted to believe,
28:19I wanted to think he was playing,
28:21but deep down I knew he was dead serious.
28:30Tell me what this is.
28:39Um, this is a picture of the cage that I was in.
28:43And, um, right here is my son's jacket
28:48that Joel made me hold.
28:52Um, he told me to hold this jacket while you die, bitch.
28:57Because you're never going to see your kids again.
29:16I'm sitting in the living room,
29:18and he sees me on the phone.
29:21And he just gets that evil look in his eyes,
29:23like, who is she talking to?
29:27And he accused me of talking to another man.
29:30And I get off the phone with her.
29:32What's that?
29:32And I'm like, why did you do that?
29:34I go, I was on the phone with my mom.
29:36He's like, huh?
29:36I go, I was on the phone with mama.
29:38I'm like, why are you doing that?
29:39He's like, sure, sure, you were talking to your mom.
29:44I'm like, you know what?
29:45I'm tired of this, Joel.
29:46I'm leaving.
29:49And he ends up grabbing my head
29:53and slamming it into the doorframe.
29:57And my phone actually called my mom.
30:00And she heard me say,
30:03Joel, you made me bleed.
30:05And, like, blood is pouring all over my face.
30:07You know, I can feel it.
30:09He told me that since I'm going to act like a bitch,
30:13I'm going to get treated like a bitch.
30:17He locked me in my dog's cage.
30:20And a short time later, I heard drilling.
30:28And I immediately was like, oh, he is screwing screws in the door.
30:34He is keeping me in this house.
30:41And that's when, like, I, like, I was already scared.
30:45But that's when I became terrified.
30:48I'm like, how is he going to finish me?
30:50Like, is he just going to let me lay here and bleed to death?
30:54Is he going to strangle me?
30:57Well, as I'm hearing him screw screws in the door,
31:03you know, I love crime shows.
31:05So I know that they would spray, like, luminol,
31:08and it would light up.
31:11So I took the blood on my forehead.
31:14I wrote on the wall, in my own blood, he killed me.
31:20Because I was like, I need to let them know, hey, I didn't run off.
31:25And nobody would be able to find out where I'm at.
31:28And he said it before that he will take and dispose of my body in a pond.
31:34And he would tell my family that I ran off.
31:39Just as I got done writing, and then I kind of, like, put my back to the wall,
31:44and he sits on the edge of the bed, and is just watching me.
31:48I didn't want him to, like, prolong it.
31:51I didn't want him to just, like, make me suffer.
31:54I didn't want him to continue to torture me.
31:57So I was just saying, please, God, just let him be fast.
32:01Hey.
32:06So my dad could come and get me and take me home.
32:14And I kind of go unconscious again, and I hear my mom.
32:23I hear her go, Christy, Christy, baby girl.
32:28And I hear pounding.
32:40If my phone didn't call my mom, I would be in a pond right now.
32:52Where's he at?
32:56Walter!
33:00Christy, come to the door!
33:03Christy!
33:04Christy!
33:07Christy, come to the door!
33:08Joe!
33:09Joe!
33:11Help me!
33:12I can't take that.
33:25Search him.
33:27Dude, y'all are, like, really treating me like I did to you.
33:31I put it on everything I love.
33:33That's what happened.
33:36Dude, I put it on God.
33:37Okay.
33:38Go ahead.
33:39Y'all don't believe me.
33:41She started slamming her hands.
33:43All right.
33:43Get in the car.
33:44Get in the car.
33:47Watch your leg.
33:53I've never seen that clip before.
33:56How does he look to you?
33:59He looks like an evil prick.
34:02He doesn't, he doesn't look remorseful.
34:06He's not sorry.
34:07He might be sorry that he didn't get to finish what he started.
34:11But that's the only thing he's sorry about.
34:28The doctor said that with all the head injuries that Joel caused,
34:32and all the times he would strangle me until I was unconscious,
34:37caused me to have brain damage.
34:40They didn't think that they would be able to fix me.
34:44They sent me to a nursing home to die closer to my family.
34:51They, they told my mom that I most likely would not make it.
34:57And if I did make it, I would never get out of bed again.
35:03I'm really scared, um, because I was only, like, 35, I think, at this point.
35:13And, you know, I wanted to watch my kids grow up.
35:16You know, I wanted, I wanted to still be a mom.
35:20I got very angry that Joel did this.
35:24That's when, I guess, like, the spell he had over me broke.
35:50Um, Joel's sister reached out to me.
35:54She wrote,
35:55I was telling my friend who knew Joel as a kid the history of his abuse, and he was shocked.
36:01It ends with you, but there is a long line of women who were subject to his abuse.
36:06Me, both his grandmothers, his previous ex-girlfriends,
36:10and now I'm hearing about his sister, his cousin, and his aunt.
36:16His older sister told me that he ended up pushing his grandmother down the stairs.
36:23And there was one incident where he was arguing with his grandmother,
36:30and his grandfather, I guess, stepped in.
36:33And that's when Joel hit him in the head with a trophy.
36:47I knew I was going to have to testify, and I knew seeing him was going to be, like, really
36:52hard.
36:53And, to be honest, it made me sick, the thought of seeing him again.
36:59And I didn't, I didn't want to see him.
37:02But, like, after finding out, you know, that he did that to his grandmother and other members of his family,
37:08you know, it made me more confident in myself.
37:13And, like, it was crystal clear I needed to do what I needed to do to get him,
37:20to get him in prison for as long as possible.
37:24And, looking back, you know, how I said, like, there was, like, a demon in him.
37:31And there truly was a demon in him.
37:34He's dangerous to everyone.
37:36Like, nobody's safer around Joel.
37:40And, like, you know, I realized I wasn't his first, but I made, I made sure I was his last.
37:46And nobody's going to get hurt by the hands of Joel Woffer again.
38:08He was sentenced to 50 years, 11 months, and 29 days in prison.
38:16It's a long time.
38:17Yes, it is a very long time.
38:20When you say that, you have a smile on your face.
38:22Because he, he can't hurt me anymore.
38:26And it's not really just about me.
38:28He can't hurt another woman like he hurt me.
38:38I rely on my mom a lot, and sometimes it's hard, because she's supposed to rely on me.
38:46You know, it's supposed to be the other way around.
38:49And here I am, 39 years old, having to have my mom help me with, like, things I should be
38:55able to do on my own.
38:58Sometimes I lose my balance a lot, and then I think a lot of it is also anxiety.
39:05It's honestly still, like, putting a toll on me.
39:10I have really, really bad nightmares about him.
39:13And I still do.
39:17Like, just the other day, I, I try to get up and run.
39:21And, like, I have the nightmares that, like, you know, if you're dreaming inside of a dream, like, you wake
39:28up and he's still there.
39:32To be honest, I hate looking at myself, because my body, like, things have changed since Joel.
39:39And, like, it's, it's hard to miss this huge neck tattoo.
39:46And it's just, like, a constant reminder of what all, like, what all he put me through.
39:51And it reminds me of all the times he strangled me.
39:56So it's hard to look at.
39:59I do think about wanting to get it covered up.
40:03I've actually got a design for it.
40:06Um, purple is for domestic violence color.
40:09So I want purple in there.
40:10And hopefully one day I'll be able, be able to do it.
40:17I have a lot of emotions, you know.
40:19It's nice to get it out.
40:21Like, it's good to finally, you know, get it off my chest.
40:25Because, you know, I've been holding it for five years.
40:29It's difficult.
40:30But it's nice to finally be able to express and say everything he's done.
40:38And I just think of how I used to be.
40:41And how I miss, though, Christy.
40:45And she's never coming back.
40:48But I'm thanking God now for letting me survive.
40:54You know, allowing me to still be with my kids.
40:57I was gone for two years.
40:59And I'm finally home.
41:01So instead of, please, God, will you, it's, thank you, God, for everything you've done.
41:28The man's a monster.
41:30You know, I hope that they've been through.
41:30Ladies and gentlemen.
41:30Let's go.
