00:00The Alor Gajah Magistrates Court today sentenced a man to nine months in prison for stepping on the Quran and
00:07uploading footage of the act online last month.
00:10Burnama reported that Magistrate Tio Shuyi handed down the sentence on Amir Abdul Malik, 41, after he pleaded guilty.
00:18Amir was charged with desecrating Islam by recording and uploading a video of himself stepping on the Quran with the
00:24intent to insult the religion at Kampung Durian Dawun, Masjid Tana on February 28.
00:30The charge, framed under Section 295 of the Penal Code, provides for up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or
00:36both upon conviction.
00:38In delivering her judgment, Tio said the offense was serious as it touched on Muslim sensitivities and could disrupt harmony
00:45in society.
00:46She added that the offense was particularly concerning as it occurred during Ramadan, a period meant for spiritual reflection and
00:53good deeds.
00:55Amir's jail term will take effect from the date of his arrest on March 15.
