A parliamentary committee has turned its focus to the chronic congestion along Wrightson Road, examining how port activity is fueling daily traffic headaches. With thousands of vehicles and trucks converging on the corridor during peak hours, officials are now weighing solutions—including digital systems, off-site container hubs, and adjusted port operations—to ease the gridlock.

00:2580,000 vehicles use Risen Road daily.
00:28That's almost 3,300 vehicles per hour. Peak hours is as much as 6,000 vehicles moving along a two
00:37-mile stretch area.
00:38So, trucks may be coming to deliver an MT. That's a very fast transaction.
00:56Another truck may come to deliver an MT and pick up an import, or they may go to the scanning
01:01facility.
01:02So, it all depends on the duration of the process or the transaction that they are conducting on that day.
01:08But, ideally, majority of the containers are moved between 6 to 6 p.m.
01:21There are many implications if we were to consider closing the gate between that period to stop the trucks from
01:30leaving.
01:30And, also, this will account to a lot of congestion on our facilities because we need the trucks to be
01:36able to move.
01:37We don't have any storage space.
01:39So, if you shut down the port for three hours and you have 50 trucks there, where are the trucks
01:44going to be staying?
01:45So, those are some of the implications that we would have considered, and also the possible cost to the business
01:51community
01:51because a haulier is not going to pack up a truck for three hours and not charge some kind of
01:56cost.
02:21So, let's see.
02:26We need to move to a state where we fully adopt a port community system because what a port community
02:35system does,
02:36it removes the need for foot traffic, and this traffic is now done digitally.
02:41So, you're going to reduce all of that traversing from the different agencies, one.
02:45We also need to amalgamate a hub, trade hub.
02:50So, where you have customs, you have immigrations, you have port personnel in one area.
02:54So, if somebody has to come face-to-face to come to visit an agency for specialized, of course, you
03:00don't want heavy traffic.
03:01This is just in cases where you have situations that may be challenging to solve digitally.
03:06You have all these agencies into one hub where, and it can be located outside of Port of Port of
03:13Spain.
03:39So, here we go.
