00:06Oh, shit, this is tight, Ralph.
00:10This is really tight, Ralph.
00:11Just take a second.
00:12Oh, God, I can't have a seat.
00:13It's all about.
00:15Well, well, well.
00:16Just remember your breathing.
00:17You all right?
00:18Oh, my God, I've got to breathe.
00:19Just give me a breath.
00:19Just take some breathing.
00:20Touch your hands together.
00:21Well, I guess, oh, God, this is awful.
00:24Oh, wow, this is awful.
00:25Oh, my God.
00:35This is Will.
00:36This is terrifying.
00:37Slow down.
00:39And this is Ralph.
00:40I feel like a powerful badass.
00:42We've been mates for 20-odd years.
00:45Come here, let's have a snuggle.
00:47We might look like middle-aged blokes.
00:49Yeah, this is great fun.
00:51But really, we're just a pair of massive, noisy,
00:58We're sinking.
00:59Kids.
01:00Where have you got that cake from?
01:02So what will it take for us to grow up?
01:04I'm really tired.
01:06Embrace modern life.
01:07Should have gone for some subtle nails, like mine.
01:10And become better, married one,
01:11without a survivor, maturer men.
01:16Look at these times.
01:17There's something wrong with these.
01:29Set me up goal.
01:31Everybody.
01:32Oh.
01:34Rock your body right.
01:37We are back, pal.
01:38Back streets, back.
01:40All right.
01:45Let's go.
01:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:49I'm not a kid to know.
01:51Yeah.
01:53Am I the only one?
01:56Yeah.
01:57Am I sexual?
02:00Not much anymore.
02:02My everything you need, you better rock your body now.
02:07Everybody.
02:09we are back mate well we made it difficult second we made it what do you mean we made it
02:16oh and we made the show i thought you meant we're still alive you know barely i'm 49 now
02:21honestly it started to panic me when people die now i'll look at the rage and count how many years
02:35literally this morning yeah you got something out of your bag yeah and it was like a pharmacy locker
02:41in a hospital so there was just tablets falling out of it because i all right imodium i don't
02:48fancy shitting myself right and every now and then you go whoa and you start sweating no one
02:53so no news for that gavis gonna get a lot of heartburn when did you become my grandma
02:58i don't know hey do you know another thing i've got into now boiled sweets are you tell that's a
03:05joke
03:05no i love the boiled sweet my grandparents literally used to say oh i'll tell you what i do like
03:10on a
03:10car journey boiled sweets are you serious last last series you were like don't let the old man in this
03:16series you like you rolled him out of red carpet and you know we have some space for you in
03:20the back sir
03:24what did you learn about yourself the most the biggest thing that you learned well from last
03:29series yeah i learned a lot more about you and i think you learned a lot about me i think
03:33in a team
03:34situation i think we've got each other's back and i think we have got better but we are only little
03:40one word away from wanting to kill each other as well at the same time if one of us gets
03:45it wrong
03:45like a marriage today right i've organized for us to do oh god well something that's better driving
03:54you like driving oh yes better teamwork we're gonna have to work together i actually think we learned
04:00in the last series that we're pretty good at communication like that no new roles i think that
04:05where are you going all right you're fucking idiot well out of your knob
04:12that's at least we've grown up a bit
04:20we get we came together as a team
04:24can i just say we are here
04:42this field just outside brackley is home to one of the uk's biggest collections of tanks
04:48outside of the army it's called tanks a lot i'll be honest i thought the way you were talking i
04:55thought
04:55we were going rally driving but this is much better hey oh wow we're here to meet owner and tank
05:03collector nick mead how's it going mate you've got a lot of tanks 300 and counting 300 tanks yeah and
05:13he started when you were young just going i want a tank yeah about and then i had to wait
05:17a little
05:17while till i had some money and then i bought one very cheap off the army and um it just
05:22began
05:23we're we're sort of looking into teamwork communication communication is imperative
05:28what we're in driving a tank yeah you've got a crew normally driver commander gunner loader and if
05:35they're not working perfectly as a team cost you your life probably right so yeah you need to communicate
05:41well today well this is your ride for the day it's a beauty it's a four three four all right
05:50go on
05:53you try and lean over i'll show you the ins and outs of this okay come on in right what
05:57you've got
05:58these are for your steering yeah you keep them both forward you pull the right to go right left to
06:03go
06:03left if you pull it hard it turns really tight if you pull it gently it turns really gently okay
06:08have any every day have you driven a tank before well here's my tank license uh that i got in
06:152009 when i was
06:18in the romanian army the romanian army yeah so you'll see the your license is there
06:25for what i've got a license i got it on a show called world's toughest driving tests about 15
06:31years ago where i learned to drive a romanian tank what well i just saw don't casually pull out a
06:39tank
06:39license what
06:46oi this is hell as ralph doesn't have a professional tank license nick needs him to do a lap on
06:53the practice
06:53track first that's it that's it and now build your revs up and we're off okay go on son
07:02and we're off hey
07:09whoa i don't want to sound like i'm you know following myself it's it's it's not that tricky
07:19he always seems to pick things up dead easy he seems to be good at everything he goes i've never
07:23done this before oh what do you mean master at it am i you want one now don't you yeah
07:28i do
07:32he's probably gonna say he didn't have to do nothing to get that tank license they give them
07:35to everybody that's the type of thing he'll say i reckon those licenses are piss easy to get this is
07:42fun
07:44you've done very well in fact um i reckon you could do that blindfolded right right so let's get
07:52a blindfold balls you're joking no no really well we're gonna do a blindfold are you serious yeah
07:59right i don't think you can use the word right or left either what do you mean uh we use
08:04animal noises
08:05animal noises what so obviously communication is the big theme here but when we first arrived and
08:10learning how to drive the tank i was like well i don't quite get what the communication issue is
08:15and then suddenly it was like we're doing it blindfolded and we're not going to use english
08:19words we're going to use animal noises it was like oh okay i really get it it's important that you
08:25can
08:25communicate in any kind of situation in any kind of way for any crew cat and dog right meow woof
08:31meow left woof right right slow down that sounds slow slow down to cow here we go here we go
08:42put your
08:42blindfold on all right so let's run to anyone left hey hey straight slow down speed up right we've got
08:51it what about stop sorted right let's try it let's try it okay here we go engine on right
09:05oh
09:23whoa left i'm thinking am i going into a tree how fast am i going i don't know
09:27put your fucking foot down thank you i can't i can't you look at me
09:32you're not giving me any commands i'm trying to tell myself don't forget the animal noises
09:41see drive the bastard and as soon as i panicked they went right out the window and i was doing
09:45all
09:45sorts of animal noises
09:50sound like doctor pity and doodal we're doing half the zoo
10:02well this is
10:03it was a lot more difficult than i think either of us expected
10:12okay
10:13cool cool cool cool cool cool
10:17go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go
10:24you're in neutral you're fucking bellette
10:45i think having driven first with the blindfold on it gave me an understanding of what i would
10:52have liked to have liked to have heard and i do think that that gave me a bit of an
11:09advantage
11:09plus i'm cleverer
11:24like
11:41it's
11:43This thing's a shite!
11:44Neutral.
11:45I can't find the fucking thing!
11:47Meow!
11:48Neutral.
11:48Neutral.
11:49It's a nintel.
11:51I was going, moo, moo, moo being a cow,
11:55which was the agreed noise for slowdown.
11:58You threw a donkey noise in her, summit changed.
12:00I went, moo, moo, moo.
12:02I can't remember what that was.
12:04That's why that happened.
12:05Because you just accelerated into the water.
12:08I've realised I don't like being blindfolded.
12:10It came over like a tidal wave,
12:12and it stunk like absolute shite.
12:16Woo!
12:18And a bit went on my lip.
12:20Right there.
12:20Don't know where.
12:23Don't know where.
12:24Don't know where.
12:25I can't even think about what's in that water.
12:28Pe senora!
12:30Animals are shitting it, pissing it.
12:32You know, things have died in it.
12:34Corpses.
12:35You know, all sorts of rotten shit.
12:39Nick, how was it? All right?
12:41I think it was satisfactory.
12:44I think you were better at the commanding.
12:47Did he say he was a better tank driver than me?
12:49I don't know whether he did.
12:50Did he say that?
12:51I don't think your communication is bad by any means.
12:54I just panicked a bit.
12:54But I feel like you, the blindfolding really had you panicked a little bit.
12:58Do you know what he was?
12:58I panicked.
12:59And when I panicked, I forgot my animals.
13:01I definitely wouldn't be good in a combat situation.
13:03I'd just panic.
13:03I'd shoot my own people.
13:05I'd just shoot everybody.
13:06I would.
13:07I'd be shite at it.
13:08Are you a little bit grumpy because you've got water that smells of shite all the way?
13:11I don't.
13:12I've got to get this off me.
13:13A bit of it went in my mouth again.
13:15It's becoming a bit of a regularity for me.
13:18Piss off.
13:18Let me get off this thing.
13:20Piss off.
13:21Piss off.
13:21Some sunny day.
13:25Piss off.
13:29Piss off.
13:30Piss off.
13:32Piss off.
13:34Piss off.
13:36Piss off.
13:36I need one for you.
13:37Do you know the difference between Abu Dhabi and Dubai?
13:43Go on.
13:44Well, the people in Dubai don't like the Flintstones.
13:48But the people in Abu Dhabi do.
13:51Piss off.
13:52Piss off.
13:52There's one day and the next day gone.
13:55Sometimes you've been and sometimes you've stayed.
13:57Sometimes you're just...
13:58Just crashing to the Central Reservation.
13:59I'm swerving us over.
14:00All the time in the dark and dark, where blues won't harm you anymore.
14:04How about you then?
14:05Erm, is there anything you learnt about yourself from last year?
14:07Do you call your mum more?
14:09Yeah, I do.
14:10I do.
14:11Well, there's a win already.
14:12You're opening up about your sister.
14:14You talking about that.
14:15You talking that you said to me, I've got no-one to talk to.
14:19That bothered me.
14:21You know what I mean?
14:22It's not the lack of having people who would be willing to be there for me.
14:26Right.
14:26For all of these people that would love to be there for me, I'm like,
14:28No, you're alright, thanks.
14:29We're good.
14:30Oh, what?
14:30Oh, oi, oi, oi!
14:32Yeah, yeah.
14:33Life is a highway.
14:36I won't ride it all night long.
14:39I'm taking you somewhere else now.
14:41Now, this is communicating with the team.
14:46Okay.
14:46We are going to be doing wheelchair basketball.
14:52Really?
14:53Yes.
14:53Oh, I like that.
14:54Well, you know, obviously, I had a disabled sister.
14:57Yeah.
14:57I've been around, you know, and seen how disabled people are treated as well,
15:02and I want to get into that conversation as well.
15:04With me growing up, it was normal.
15:05Because I was born, and my sister was already there, and she was disabled.
15:09Yeah, because it's not othered, is it?
15:10Because it's normalised.
15:11And everyone in the community knew her as Jo- that's Joanne, that's Jo.
15:14But as soon as you stepped out of that, you could see people being uncomfortable.
15:18Yeah, yeah.
15:19They would avoid eye contact or talking, because they felt uncomfortable.
15:23Mm-hm.
15:23And they don't know how to act.
15:25Mm-hm.
15:25You know what I mean?
15:26So, I think that's interesting, that the more you communicate with people...
15:31Yeah.
15:31...who are not like you, or maybe...
15:33That's a good point.
15:33...then the more you will understand.
15:40We're in the West Country to meet up with award-winning wheelchair basketball coach, Jack Davey.
15:48Hiya, nice to meet you.
15:49Hey Will.
15:50Nice to meet you.
15:50How are you doing?
15:50Take a seat.
15:51I've got my own.
15:53I'm here to teach you some wheelchair basketball.
15:55Yeah.
15:56Show you the ropes, basically.
15:57Very exciting.
15:57How long have you been doing this?
15:58Since about 14, so I've travelled all over Europe.
16:01I used to play professionally in Germany as well.
16:04So, I was born with a really rare form of spina bifida.
16:07So, it's going to be progressive as I get older.
16:08So, I used to play able-bodied sports, running basketball.
16:12Then I went into a wheelchair assessment, because my disability started to progress.
16:16And the guy was like, oh, if you play basketball, why not do it sat down?
16:19And that was it, really, and I never looked back since.
16:22We're non-disabled people.
16:24Yeah.
16:24Does that happen a lot?
16:27Like, you can have people who are non-disabled playing the sport with people who...
16:30It's better to sort of look at wheelchair basketball as an inclusive sport,
16:34rather than a disability sport.
16:36Because, essentially, everyone needs to be treated the same.
16:38So, you know, I'm just a guy that sat down.
16:40Because it is for everyone.
16:42Like, literally, you sit in a wheelchair, that's it.
16:44And you'll see today, you'll meet a load of guys from our team that have a huge variety of disabilities.
16:48Some more severe than others.
16:50You can just come and play sport together.
16:52Any tips?
16:53Don't stand up.
16:54I feel like it's cheating.
16:55Yeah, just a little bit.
16:57Yeah, just a little bit.
16:58Careful with your celebrations.
16:59Yeah, yeah.
17:00Don't stand up.
17:00Run into the corner.
17:01In your face!
17:02Yeah, that might be a bit much.
17:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:04You're our teacher now.
17:05Yeah.
17:06Make us decent.
17:07Yeah, let's do it.
17:08Should we get changed?
17:09Yeah, of course.
17:09You need to get changed first.
17:10All right.
17:11You lead the way, Jack.
17:11I'm excited.
17:16Strap yourself in.
17:17Okay.
17:18A few little things.
17:19Keep your feet behind the bar here, because if someone comes at you at speed, that's going
17:23to hurt, obviously.
17:24Basically, to turn your chair, all you need to do is touch the wheel.
17:27So, say I wanted to turn right, and the chair will just go.
17:29Oh, okay.
17:30Right, shall we practise the right turn?
17:32Yeah, let's see how you get on.
17:34Very nice.
17:35Oh, very smooth.
17:37Yeah.
17:37It's got to be the old tank vibe to it, hasn't it?
17:39So, in terms of dribbling, you take two pushes and bounce the ball every single time.
17:42So, you can take two pushes, bounce the ball, put it back into your lap, then take another
17:47two, bounce the ball, put it back in your lap.
17:49Your lap.
17:50I didn't understand you had to still bounce the ball.
17:52I thought you could just go with it on your lap.
17:55It's hard, isn't it?
17:56Push, push.
18:01I think we did okay.
18:05Ah, caught my finger!
18:06Ah!
18:09Who designed these?
18:13How would that really hurt?
18:15That really hurt!
18:16That really hurt!
18:18You don't appreciate how hard it is just to wheel a wheelchair around.
18:23I won't be able to lift my arms up tomorrow.
18:25I hope I don't have to say hello to anybody.
18:26It'll be like that.
18:28Because a lot of spinal injuries need to get that momentum to then build up and...
18:32What's a weird...
18:33Finger again!
18:34He's got his finger again!
18:37He's hurt his finger again!
18:38He's hurt his finger again!
18:47He's out!
18:47Keep your finger out of the rim!
18:49Yeah, I've known that now!
18:52It's not a motto I usually live by.
18:56I'm an adventurous sort of bloke.
18:59With our wheelchair basketball skills as good as they're going to get, Jack is introducing us to the real players
19:05to have a real match.
19:14They look good, don't they?
19:15They look very fast and very good.
19:18I thank the coach for it.
19:19Yeah!
19:20Okay, so this is the first team players.
19:22Hello everybody!
19:23Yeah!
19:24I'm Will, this is Ralph.
19:25We're here to let you down a lot today.
19:28Yeah, yeah.
19:29I'm Ashton Bovingdon.
19:31I've been playing wheelchair basketball since I was five years old.
19:34Have you been playing a lot recently?
19:38Not recently due to my back.
19:41I've got scoliosis, I had spinal surgery.
19:44So you're back from surgery.
19:46Is this your first time back?
19:47Yeah.
19:47Oh is it?
19:47Eight months.
19:49Are you glad to be back getting yourself active?
19:51Yeah, I'm loving it.
19:52My name's Emma and I've got Neur syndrome.
19:55Okay.
19:55Jack improves me every year and every year I get better.
19:59And then like this year I got tryouts for a women's team and I've been signed.
20:03Oh have you?
20:04Yeah, there's also Jack, really.
20:06Well I must wait for your good, do you know what I mean?
20:07Yeah, no, I'll take that completely.
20:09Because one of the biggest things I want to give these guys is building them as a person,
20:15not just the player and themselves.
20:16So being independent, pushing their own chairs and doing their own thing that they need to do
20:20rather than just me telling them what to do.
20:22I understand.
20:23Are we going to be on the same team or opposite teams?
20:25I'm putting you on opposite teams.
20:27It's on.
20:27It's on.
20:28It's on like Donkey Kong.
20:29Oh God.
20:30All right.
20:32Here we go.
20:33Yeah.
20:34We've got this guys.
20:35This is vitally important.
20:37We cannot let Ralph's team win.
20:39If anyone can hurt Will, it'll be hilarious.
20:42I've got really pointy elbows, just saying.
20:44You've got pointy elbows?
20:44Yeah, yeah.
20:45He's not very precious about his face, so.
20:46Oh, okay.
20:47Perfect.
20:47Easy.
20:48I want the word win.
20:49That's all I want to hear.
20:50You ready?
20:51One, two, three.
20:52Win!
20:54Only winners over here.
20:55There's no losers on this team.
20:57Do you hear me?
20:58No losers.
21:00Come and tip off then.
21:01Come and tip off then.
21:02Come and tip off.
21:03What does that mean?
21:03Really?
21:04It's not what you think it is.
21:12Yes, Jack.
21:13Oh shit balls.
21:14I've got to win it as well.
21:18Come on Jack.
21:19Come on Jack.
21:19Come on Jack.
21:21Yes, Jack!
21:22Yay!
21:23The game's good, Jack!
21:24Yes, defence!
21:27To speed it in!
21:28The one went past me, like a whippet, just flew past me.
21:32I couldn't keep up with anyone.
21:36Oh, we're close.
21:37Oh!
21:38How's it going that fast?
21:40Oh!
21:46Yes!
21:48Yes!
21:49Yes!
21:49Oh yes!
21:49Jack!
21:51Jack!
21:51Jack!
21:53Jack!
21:55Oh hang on.
21:56Oh!
21:57He's not allowed to do that!
22:01Finish!
22:02Yes!
22:05Go to Bastion!
22:06Yes!
22:07Yes!
22:09Come on!
22:12All right, aggressive.
22:18Oh!
22:18Oh, that's it!
22:18I fucked it!
22:23Yes!
22:23Time, time, time, time, time.
22:24It's your mouth!
22:25Oh, that's a play right there!
22:27Oh!
22:27Oh!
22:29Oh!
22:31Nice!
22:32Ralph's team equalised, two minutes to go, and it was just like...
22:36Oh!
22:40She's grabbing me!
22:41Oh!
22:41That's a charging foul, Ralph!
22:43A very aggressive Emma, I think you'll find!
22:45And I got a penalty.
22:47From here!
22:48It was out of your mind!
22:50And I could feel the pressure was on me.
22:57I thought, oh no, is this going to be the moment where they go ahead and nick the win?
23:12And then I looked and I realised it was Will Shoot and then I just sat back and was like,
23:16We'll be fine.
23:18Oh!
23:24I let my team down.
23:27Gutted.
23:29Yes!
23:29The faith I had!
23:31Oh!
23:35It's a draw.
23:39He's knocking all your arms.
23:41My arms are like jelly.
23:43My God.
23:44I think coming into this, we thought the teamwork would be about just, you know, the wheelchair basketball playing as
23:50a team.
23:51But I think it's more than that.
23:53It's a community, you know, they all support each other and that's, you know, that's the real side of teamwork.
24:01Oh, quality Landon! Quality! Quality!
24:05Having a disabled sister myself, I know how important people like Jack are to disabled people.
24:12Because, you know, I've seen it myself, you know, you have to help push them forward to go, no, you
24:18can do more, you know, encourage them.
24:20We did it with my sister and my family and she'd go to respite centres where they were like-minded
24:24people.
24:25Help her meet different people but see that your world isn't so small, you know, you can do more than
24:30you think.
24:31So, my sister would have benefited and did benefit from people like Jack.
24:37Fuck it out Jack!
24:39Yes!
24:41Yes!
24:43Yes!
24:43My arms are killing me.
24:45Fun though. Fun though!
24:46If I'm in the area again, can I play again?
24:48Yeah, you're welcome.
24:50I mean, I can't promise I'll be any better but I enjoyed myself.
24:52Hey, you will be. You will be.
25:03Just the two of us.
25:06We can make it if we try.
25:08Just the two of us.
25:11Just the two of us.
25:14So go on, how did you find it?
25:17Being in a wheelchair and getting about.
25:19I sort of more appreciated how skilled and athletic they are.
25:23Obviously, empathy is really important but it was an amazing experience to come away from it instead of going,
25:28God, life must be really hard for these guys.
25:29They must get sick of that shit.
25:31Yeah, it became very clear very quickly how athletic they all are.
25:35I mean, all I could hear all the time was you going,
25:38How was he so fast? How was he so fast?
25:44You told me that you like to get a salmon to jizz into your eyes.
25:48No, I didn't say that.
25:49I'm pretty sure that you were using it.
25:50No, I said these things you can have, the stem cell.
25:54So you can have the stem cells put into your eyes, right, underneath your eyes and it just, it reverses
26:01the aging process.
26:02So it sort of, yeah, so it just gives you elasticity.
26:05What's it called?
26:06What's it called?
26:07No, I don't know what it's called.
26:09Elasticity.
26:10Elasticity.
26:11Peso.
26:12You know, elasticity.
26:13What's it called?
26:14Elasticity.
26:17Elasticity.
26:17Is that right?
26:18That was close.
26:18Hold on.
26:19That was close.
26:20Elasticity.
26:21Yeah!
26:22Oh, that was like watching Evolution.
26:30Don't you want to know what we're doing today?
26:32Well, yes.
26:32I mean, this is, this is the part.
26:34This is what we're here for.
26:35I don't know what we're doing now and you do.
26:38Well, in terms of trying to put together everything that we've learned about communication and teamwork, we're going to go
26:46and meet a man called Dan Cook.
26:48And Dan Cook does international emergency rescue.
26:52It's not his job.
26:53He volunteers.
26:54He'll be doing his job, going about his life.
26:56He'll get a text.
26:56There's been a natural disaster somewhere, somewhere in the world.
26:59And he's like, I'm on it.
27:01And he's like, let's go, drops everything in his life, gets on a plane and goes.
27:05He's basically, basically a real life hero.
27:08We're meeting Dan at Capita Fire Service College in Moreton-on-Marsh, overseen by Chief Fire Officer Alex Clark.
27:15It's the Centre for Excellence for Firefighter Training.
27:18We do RAF, Army, Navy, Special Forces.
27:21It's the elite that come here.
27:23And now it's me and Ralph.
27:24There's a big difference, you know what I mean?
27:26I've never been involved in anything to do with the word excellence before.
27:34Hi, folks.
27:35Hello.
27:35It's nice to see you.
27:36Thanks, thanks, thanks.
27:37Thanks.
27:39Well, my last 25 years, I've been doing international rescue for events like earthquakes and been to nearly 10,000
27:46calls in the UK for classic firefighting jobs.
27:49As well as performing disaster rescue around the world, Dan runs a company called Dark Swan, which provides training exercises
27:56for the public to learn teamwork skills.
27:59We've worked with a few people, that's Gareth Southgate, kitted up.
28:03Why would Gareth Southgate come here?
28:05He was looking at teamwork, what we do with stress, with pressure, how we respond to it.
28:10And the really important thing, especially if we're looking at teams, is how people help each other with it.
28:15Today, your part of the rescue is to act as a two-person team in an earthquake and try and
28:22rescue people from a collapsed building.
28:24Yeah, I'm not good in closed spaces, so I got trapped under a lilo once.
28:28Don't laugh.
28:29It was a big falling device.
28:31I'm glad you found it funny.
28:32It was terrifying at the time.
28:33I was a kid.
28:33But I don't like the thought of feeling, what if I don't get out, and the closed spaces.
28:39The wisdom of how to manage stress lies in the body.
28:42Do body stuff first.
28:43Mental stuff will come second.
28:45And even just breathing out, that action itself sort of triggers the relaxation response.
28:51But sometimes human touch is so, so important.
28:54Squeezing somebody's thumb, I'm okay because I've got somebody else with me, so...
28:58Catherine, what did you put up?
28:58I was just about to say to you, I know what you'll be doing.
29:0120 years we've known each other, but not that well.
29:03Don't be sticking your finger up the arse.
29:04They'll be like, I'm very present!
29:06Ralph's here!
29:06There's going to be a lot crawling around.
29:07Okay.
29:08So we're going to put those on.
29:09Before we're thrown into the simulation proper, we have to get kitted up and run some practice obstacles.
29:14We'll simulate this as the entrance going through here.
29:17Yeah.
29:18When you're going in, if there's anything that's sharp or anything like that, call it out so your teammate knows
29:23as well.
29:24Are we going to go to this thing?
29:25Yeah, yeah.
29:25Can you see now?
29:26What can you see, Will?
29:27Floor!
29:28Brilliant.
29:29Floor!
29:30And bearing in mind, if you hit objects with force, that could collapse the building further on top of you.
29:35Don't hit any objects with force, Will.
29:37Don't fart.
29:38We've reached the area where there is a casualty.
29:41What we're going to do now is just quickly go through how you would package them in a stretcher.
29:45Blue here.
29:46Remember, blue to shoe.
29:48Yeah?
29:48Blue shoe.
29:49And you've got red head heads.
29:50Red head, okay?
29:51There you go.
29:52Good shuffling.
29:53Excellent.
29:53Well done.
29:54Right.
29:54We need to get these straps, okay?
29:56The best way to remember this is the straps go nips, knackers, knees.
30:00Nips, knackers, knees?
30:15Nips, knackers, knees.
30:17And she'll say, piss off.
30:18Have a shower first.
30:20Set on down.
30:21Time for the mission to begin.
30:26When we step through these doors, we're going to put you into the mission, okay?
30:30You're going to be the equivalent of landing in the country.
30:33It's had an earthquake, the briefing in there.
30:34You're a search and rescue team.
30:36Amazing.
30:36Are we looking to find survivors?
30:38That's the key to what our job is today.
30:40Yeah, yeah, exactly that.
30:41Okay.
30:41Let's do it.
30:42Awesome.
30:43Let's go.
30:45Right.
30:49Hi, folks.
30:51Hi, guys.
30:51So, you have just arrived in country.
30:54Right.
30:55The earthquake was a 6.9.
30:56It's pretty big.
30:57A large amount of buildings down.
30:58Lots of people missing.
31:00Okay, yeah.
31:00Of hundreds of these folks here who are running stuff on the ground.
31:03Hi, guys.
31:04Welcome to the Onsite Coordination Centre.
31:06Thank you very much.
31:06About 1,000 reporters missing at the moment, so we really need to start moving.
31:10So, this is the edit one.
31:11Hi, thank you.
31:12I'm Simon.
31:12Nice to meet you.
31:13Hi, Simon.
31:13We'll grab a stretcher.
31:15Come with me.
31:16We'll go rescue Stu.
31:18Okay.
31:19You got that?
31:19I've got this.
31:21This is the building.
31:22It's a three-storey building collapse.
31:32Oh, my Lord.
31:34Look at this.
31:43I'll take you around to where the rescue workers were, okay?
31:46Okay.
31:48Oh, my Lord.
31:49Look at this.
31:53I'll take you around to where the rescue workers were, okay?
31:53It was just like a big pile of rubble.
31:55And there's, like, people everywhere covered in dust.
31:58And it was like we was in a real-life situation.
32:03We went in this way.
32:05This is our entry point.
32:11Oh!
32:13Reports of casualties in there, and, er, drawn a bit of a map.
32:18Laura is quite close.
32:20I've heard her shouting for the last hour or so.
32:23What do you want to do?
32:24Well, I'd say we know Laura's definitely there, so let's get her.
32:27Let's go and get Laura.
32:27I think we leave this out here.
32:29Ready after Simon.
32:31If we, er, either someone can bring it in or one comes back.
32:34You good?
32:34I'm already knackered.
32:35I've already started.
32:36Right.
32:36No, we're going to leave.
32:37We'll leave it by the entrance.
32:38Leave it by the entrance.
32:38Right.
32:39Let's go.
32:39So we're in.
32:42We're going in.
32:43Oh, it's tight in here.
32:45Right.
32:46As soon as you come in, you've got two metal rods right by your knees.
32:50Okay.
32:51I don't like small spaces.
32:53I don't.
32:53It's just something I avoid.
32:55Look out!
32:55My pissing head.
32:57Right.
32:59Ah!
32:59Bollocks!
33:01Just...
33:02Just...
33:02Just keep...
33:04This isn't going to work if you keep making me laugh.
33:07Making you laugh?
33:09I've already whacked me head and me knees.
33:11Right.
33:12Okay.
33:12Right.
33:12Have you got past the metal rods?
33:14Yeah, I'm past the metal rods.
33:15Right.
33:16We're going into another bigger space here.
33:18Yeah.
33:19Is it a drop there?
33:20I'm just going to go down on me.
33:21Okay.
33:23I found somebody.
33:24Someone's here.
33:25Okay.
33:25Yes.
33:25Yes.
33:27Hello?
33:28Can you hear me?
33:29Yeah.
33:29Hello?
33:30Can you hear me?
33:31What's your name?
33:32Laura.
33:33Pardon?
33:33Laura.
33:34I can't hear you, love.
33:35Laura.
33:36Nora's here.
33:37Ready one.
33:38We found a survivor.
33:40Yes.
33:41Called Laura.
33:43Laura.
33:44Oh, I thought it was Laura.
33:45No, no.
33:46Do you know if you have any injuries?
33:49No.
33:50Unknown if she has any injuries and she's not able to tell us.
33:55Yeah.
33:55Thanks so much.
33:56My recommendation is keeping up with the stretcher.
33:58She's trying to talk to Laura.
33:59Make sure she's all right.
34:01Bedside, man.
34:02I'd be nice.
34:04Have you got any pain anywhere, Laura?
34:06No.
34:07Where's he hurting?
34:11My job, especially when Ralph went to get the stretcher, was just to try and keep her
34:14calm.
34:15I feel okay?
34:15No pain?
34:16Yep.
34:18Do you know how long you've been here, Laura?
34:20Approximately.
34:22Okay.
34:22He's here with the stretcher now, Laura.
34:24So we're going to try and get you out.
34:27First things first, Ralph.
34:28Let's get this stretcher on.
34:30Right.
34:30So we're going to want...
34:31Hold on.
34:31This is...
34:31Head, red, feet, blue.
34:33What was it?
34:34Head, red, shoes, blue.
34:35Oh, that was it.
34:36I didn't say feet.
34:37Don't run with blue.
34:38Okay.
34:38So I think this is what we have to think about.
34:40What?
34:41Well, can she be lifted?
34:42How are we going to get her down on that pissy hole?
34:44We'll figure that out.
34:45But can she be lifted or will that be too painful?
34:47And I don't think we're going to know until maybe we sort of try and roll her
34:50and see if...
34:51Laura, have you seen the rocks?
34:52They'll be stuck up her ass and everything.
34:54You can't just put a rock up over there.
34:55It's all very well doing it in the room and remembering this and having a bit of a joke,
34:58but once you're in there...
34:59Oh, for fuck's sake.
35:00...you can't breathe and you're sweating and it is loud, you've got the radio going.
35:04It was a bit like, wait, what did they say?
35:06We're not pissing out.
35:08Why are we going to get her on there?
35:09Get the straps out from under there.
35:10Laura, we're going to try and roll you to this way, love, all right?
35:15Okay.
35:15One.
35:16Lift the legs.
35:16Two.
35:17Three.
35:18Okay.
35:19Oh, my God.
35:20Sorry.
35:20Try and roll you over a little bit.
35:22I've got your legs there.
35:23There we go.
35:24I've got her under the arms.
35:25I've got her under the arms.
35:26All right, remember, you do the...
35:27What's it called?
35:28I think you might...
35:29What was it called?
35:30Feet.
35:30Nip, knackers.
35:31That's it.
35:31The whole nip, knackers and knees thing.
35:33Okay.
35:33Stuff like that genuinely really came in handy.
35:36It's like, right, let's just stop.
35:37Think.
35:38Work methodically.
35:39How do we do this?
35:40What's the best thing?
35:41What order do we do it in?
35:42Oh, fuck your order.
35:43I don't remember any of that shit.
35:44That's it.
35:45Yeah, watch.
35:45Take your time.
35:46Be careful.
35:46Just slowly.
35:49Slow and steady.
35:50That's it.
35:51That's it.
35:51Lift that.
35:53I've got her.
35:55There we go.
35:57Okay.
35:58That was good.
35:58Rest your legs on the ledge, you climb in, and I'll pass her through to you.
36:02Okay.
36:03Pissing out.
36:05Okay, you ready?
36:05Yeah.
36:06Push.
36:06Yeah.
36:08I've got her.
36:09Watch your head.
36:10Watch your head.
36:11There we go.
36:11All right, I'm down at feet.
36:13Right.
36:14You push at the same time as I lift.
36:15Are you ready?
36:16Yep.
36:16One, two, three, go.
36:18Fuck it.
36:19Oh, my Jesus Christ.
36:22Go.
36:23Two.
36:24Go.
36:25Go.
36:25Ah!
36:26Yeah, well done.
36:27Well done.
36:27Well done.
36:28Okay.
36:29We're out.
36:30Feet are out.
36:32Hold on.
36:33Right.
36:34Drew, can you go?
36:36Okay.
36:36Can you guys take that?
36:37Between the four of you.
36:38Ready?
36:38Brace, lift, go.
36:40Right.
36:40How are you doing, guys?
36:40All right, yeah.
36:41Excellent.
36:43Laura's going to be taking out.
36:44We've got a medivac coming over there.
36:45If you can get back in, as there's been a few aftershocks in the area, and we're really
36:49a bit conscious.
36:49My colleague can't get out.
36:51Nick took this orange line in with him.
36:55Yep.
36:55I'm thinking of getting in here, going for Nick.
36:57Yeah.
36:58Yeah.
36:58Okay.
36:59All good?
36:59All good, really?
37:01You ready, Will?
37:02No, you've got to go back in now.
37:03Do you want me to go first, or you?
37:04Hold on, no.
37:05It's all right, I don't mind.
37:06Let's go.
37:07Let's just get it done.
37:08I will have a go at anything, but how I deal with it can be rocky.
37:13Ralph is a straight line.
37:14He'll deal with it in his own way.
37:17Yeah, I'm coming.
37:18I'm right behind you.
37:21He has a balance about him.
37:23I'm a bit jealous of him, in a way, because I'm highs and lows, highs and lows, and he's
37:29just...
37:29And I think that's why he's good at things.
37:31Stand on it, I stand on it.
37:32Okay.
37:33Right.
37:35Oh, shit, this is tight, Ralph.
37:36Keep your arse down in here.
37:38All right, we're coming, Nick.
37:44This is really tight, Ralph.
37:48Can I give you a minute?
37:52This is really tight.
37:53Oh, God.
37:56I can't see shit.
37:58Oh, God, hang on.
37:59Give me a minute.
38:01Am I all right?
38:02Yeah, it's just a bit darkened.
38:03Take a sec.
38:04No, mate, it's a bit...
38:05All right, just take a second.
38:06Oh, God, I can't hardly see.
38:07It's horrible.
38:08I couldn't really see much.
38:09All I could see was the soles of his boots, because obviously I couldn't really see much,
38:12and it was really cramped and everything.
38:14I didn't know how...
38:16...how serious it was.
38:18Oh, my God, I just can't breathe.
38:19Just give me a bit.
38:20I started to panic a bit.
38:22I obviously felt I couldn't breathe.
38:24It was like I'd have to hold my breath and then look for the next space to breathe like I
38:30was underwater.
38:30That's what it felt like.
38:32Oh, God, this is awful.
38:34Oh, wow, this is awful.
38:35Oh, boy.
38:38I'm just breathing because you probably start to get a bit panicked, mate.
38:41That's all.
38:42Oh, fuck.
38:42Okay, listen.
38:42Well, well, well.
38:44Just remember your breathing.
38:45You all right?
38:45No, no, mate.
38:46Just take some breathing.
38:47Touch your hands together.
38:49Just remember your breathing.
38:50I'm just getting a bit panicked.
38:51I know.
38:52Don't you all right?
38:53You all right?
38:53Because I can't breathe properly.
38:54Hold on, hold on, hold on.
38:55Hold on.
38:56Here you are.
38:56Just take a sec.
38:58Just take a second.
38:59We're all good.
39:00We're all good.
39:01Don't...
39:01We'll get to him.
39:04But bless Ralph.
39:05He's done this for me a few times, you know.
39:07He is there for me.
39:08And he had his hand on my ankle.
39:09And I remember him saying there,
39:11if he just...
39:12Even just has someone's hand on you, he can calm you down.
39:15Just have a little.
39:17Just breathe.
39:18Fucking hell, this is awful.
39:20You all right?
39:20I know he's shouting.
39:21There's no rush.
39:21Just breathe.
39:22You're all right.
39:22You're all right.
39:23Like I said, just have to try and rationalise your head.
39:25It's your mind over your body.
39:26Because your body starts panicking.
39:28It's weird.
39:29But yeah.
39:30It is.
39:31You know.
39:31He was there for me.
39:33Yeah.
39:33Yeah, you got this.
39:38There you go.
39:38You've done well now.
39:39It's all right.
39:40It's okay.
39:41Oh, no.
39:42Oh, no.
39:43Get rid of you.
39:45Come on.
39:46You're all right.
39:48You're all right.
39:48You're all right.
39:49You're all right.
39:49As much as it would be funny for me to be like,
39:51what was he like?
39:52It was useless.
39:53It wasn't...
39:54It was...
39:56I believed in him, actually.
39:58I did believe in him.
39:58Fuck.
40:01Fucking hell.
40:02All my legs, mate.
40:03All right, I'm clear.
40:03All my legs, mate.
40:04All right, Nick.
40:05All right.
40:08Nick.
40:09Is that you, Nick?
40:11All right, mate.
40:11I'm coming.
40:12By the time I got into Nick,
40:14Will was already just giving the guy reassurance,
40:16telling him it's all right.
40:18All right, Nick.
40:18All right, mate.
40:19All right, mate.
40:20And he was just kind of...
40:22He's so personable, Will.
40:24He's so winning and personable.
40:25I was like, that's absolutely him at his best.
40:28Just keep those spirits up.
40:30Let me clear some of this off you, mate.
40:31Let me clear some of this off you.
40:33Yeah.
40:34I...
40:34I...
40:36I was dead proud.
40:37I was so proud of my mate.
40:37I came around and was like, yeah, that's my boy.
40:40I hadn't realised at that time
40:41that he nearly broke Nick's fucking leg
40:44by standing on it.
40:45His leg.
40:46Oh!
40:47Oh, that one!
40:47Oh, that one!
40:48I stood on the bleeding...
40:49Oh, oh, oh.
40:50Sorry, sorry about that.
40:51Sorry, Nick.
40:52I stood on his injured leg
40:54and I stood on the wood that was on his leg
40:55and he went, ah!
40:56And I went, well, that's the leg it's hurt then.
40:59I stood on the pole that was on his leg.
41:03It felt like we communicated really well.
41:06He was constantly checking in on me too.
41:07Constantly checking I was alright.
41:10Constantly looking out for me,
41:11telling me what was coming.
41:12Ah, well done, Nick.
41:13Ah, well done.
41:14Yes, mate, well done.
41:24That was great.
41:25Epic.
41:25What you do.
41:27That's incredible.
41:27Massive respect for what you do.
41:29I couldn't do this in real life.
41:31No, I just couldn't do it.
41:33Thank God they exist.
41:35Because they save lives.
41:37You was in the hole and it was really good actually
41:39because you did everything that we discussed.
41:41Yeah.
41:41And you stopped.
41:43Yeah.
41:44And just reflected and just sorted your breathing out,
41:47spoke to yourself,
41:48you verbalised everything that you was feeling
41:50and then went, right, I've got this,
41:52and then just carried on.
41:53And it was all...
41:53I had chills.
41:54I had chills.
41:54It was a great moment.
41:57You got through it.
41:58So it was very impressive.
42:00Ah.
42:01I mean, we started off driving tanks,
42:03blindfolded, doing animal noises.
42:06And then wheelchair basketball,
42:08meeting some amazing people there,
42:10into crawling through small spaces, rescuing people.
42:12I mean...
42:13But do you know what I'm learning about me and Ralph
42:15is we're a good team, you know?
42:17We work well together.
42:18I mean, we have our banter and we do...
42:20We have healthy competition between each other,
42:22which is good when it comes to it.
42:25We're there for each other.
42:27Er...
42:28Yeah.
42:29Er...
42:30Yeah.
42:30And I think that's a special thing.
42:33Whoa!
42:37Do-do-do!
42:38I feel like a hero.
42:42Where are all the good men gone?
42:45And where are all the gods?
42:48Where's the streetwise hercules?
42:51And why do I know all the words?
42:54What's happened?
42:55I need a hero!
42:57I'm holding on for a hero till the end of the night!
43:01He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be tough
43:04and he's gotta be fresh from the fight!
43:07I need a hero!
43:12Ooh, no, no, no, no, no.
43:16It looks like a haunted house.
43:19There's something right there.
43:20Right there?
43:21There is.
43:22Have you seen that?
43:23Oh!
43:23I need a hero!
43:27I'm holding on for a hero till the morning light!
43:31He's gotta be sure and he's gotta be soon
43:34Then he's gotta be brighter than light!
43:37More pure than light!
43:39Do-do-do!
43:41Do-do-do-do-do!
43:44Do-do-do-do-do-do!
43:48Ah!
43:49Ah!
43:51Somewhere after midnight
43:53In my wildest fantasy!
43:56I just don't understand, man.
43:56Someone who's got their children off for a hero.
43:56It's the same.
43:56And it's the same.
43:58I'm Matt.
43:58I love you, man.
43:58You have the same for you guys.
43:59You don't understand.
43:59I love you, man.
