Volunteers in Sunderland have started making cobbles for a memorial honouring locals who fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War. Workshops will continue across the city, creating a lasting tribute to the city’s volunteers and their sacrifices.

00:19in the 1930s to support the Republican cause. Artist Rob McDonald said 18 blocks were created
00:26at a workshop in Roca on Saturday with more planned across the city this year. Participants
00:32including descendants of volunteers described it as a privilege to contribute. The memorial
00:37aims to provide a permanent record of sacrifice and to raise public awareness of this history.
