Remembrance: Birmingham pays tribute to the city’s fallen heroes

At a ceremony in Brindley Place people from across the City of Birmingham came together to give thanks and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

00:00 It's an opportunity for SAFA, that's Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen and Families Association,

00:08 to actually explain to those that are visiting what the charity is all about. It's to help

00:14 those families that need help and also assist those that have served, those brave souls

00:23 who never came home.

00:25 In Brindley Place, a solemn ceremony where Birmingham came together to honour and remember

00:32 the sacrifices of our military personnel.

00:35 I'm the Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands and I'm here to represent His Majesty the

00:41 King and just wanted to remember those who have fallen and the West Midlands is representative

00:51 of a multinational community that come from all parts of the world and I'm so, so privileged

00:59 to serve this community and to recognise today as the remembrance day for our fallen soldiers.

01:09 The day was organised by the Westside Business Improvement District who wants to play their

01:13 part in honouring our fallen heroes.

01:16 I think it's really important as a business community and as a business representative

01:20 we honour and respect those that have served in the armed forces, particularly those that

01:25 have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

01:28 In attendance, members of the West Midlands Emergency Services. They were also paying

01:33 tribute to fellow comrades who'd made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

01:39 We do have firefighters that die in service but we remember the ones that we've lost historically

01:44 as well so it's remembering everybody in the emergency services as well as military.

01:49 I've had family serving the military as well in the past and also emergency service workers

01:57 that we've unfortunately lost over time so it's really important for us to be involved

02:23 In attendance and representing future generations, members of Birmingham's Military Preparation

02:29 College.

02:30 I think it means a lot for us as well as we're trying to go in the military and then

02:34 it gives us a chance to think about the other people who have obviously lost their lives

02:39 in the world wars and things like that. It gives us a chance to remember them.

02:42 Well having had friends who have been in the armed forces and heard of the sacrifices they've

02:46 made and particularly the sacrifices that their friends have made in the armed forces,

02:50 it really brings it home to you how important it is that we look after the veterans that

02:56 we've got but also remember and honour those that have gone before them.

03:00 I think it's really important that we do that and I'm proud to be here today.
