Donald Trump said 'other countries' should 'come and help us protect' the Strait of Hormuz, during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One on Sunday.

"We are talking to other countries about working with us for the policing of the strait, and I think we're getting a good response. If we do, that's great, and if we don't, that's great, too. But remember, like as an example of many cases in NATO countries, we're always there for NATO; we're helping them with Ukraine, as many it's got a notion in between us. It doesn't affect us, but we've helped them," he said.

Asked which countries had agreed to help, he added: "I can't say yet. It's a little early. They were contacted today and last night, but we've had some positive responses. We had a few that would rather not get involved."

Asked specifically if one was China, he replied: "I don't want to tell you about that. I mean, I can't really say for sure, but China's an interesting case study."

The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region. It has seen soaring worldwide energy prices and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz - which handles 20 per cent of global oil traffic. Iran said it would stop tankers which specifically benefited the US and its allies.

00:00We are talking to other countries about working with us for the policing of the strait.
00:08And I think we're getting good response.
00:10If we do, that's great.
00:11And if we don't, that's great, too.
00:12But remember, like, as an example, in many cases, they're NATO countries.
00:17We're always there for NATO.
00:20We're helping them with Ukraine.
00:23It's got an ocean in between us.
00:25It doesn't affect us, but we've helped them.
00:27It'd be interesting to see what country would help us with a very small endeavor,
00:34which is just keeping the strait open.
00:36That, by comparison, is small.
00:38It's small because Iran has very little firepower left.
00:42Their missiles are down to a low number.
00:45You see, they're shooting very few of them.
00:47You know why? Because they don't have very many of them.
00:50And because we've decimated their manufacturing capability.
00:53Mr. President, which countries have said that they will help them?
00:57Well, I can't say yet. It's a little early.
00:59They contacted today and last night.
01:02But we've had some positive response.
01:05We had a few that would rather not get involved.
01:08Is China out of them?
01:09I don't want to tell you about that.
01:11I mean, I can't really say for sure.
01:14But China's an interesting case study.
01:17They get most of their oil, as you know, by far.
01:22They get a lot, about 90% from the strait.
01:25So I said, would you like to come in and we'll find out?
01:29Maybe they will, maybe they will.
01:30You know, there's some other deeper reasons why they may not.
01:34They should come in, in my opinion.
01:36It never made sense for years.
01:38If you go back and look at what I've said years ago,
01:40I said, why aren't we maintaining the horrible strain
01:44when it's really there for China and many other countries?
01:49Why aren't they doing it?
01:50And that's because we had weak leadership, to be honest with you.
01:54But I'm bringing it up now.
01:55Because I think, even long term,
01:58I think it's something that other countries should help us with.
02:01How many other countries, Mr. President?
02:02And again, remember this, about seven.
02:05We talked to you about seven.
02:06About seven.
02:08Just remember that it's something that we don't need,
02:13and these countries do need.
02:15And yet, for years, it's like, for years,
02:18we've been maintaining and doing a great job.
02:22And now that the war is,
02:24now that they've been diminished in terms of military there,
02:28military has been greatly diminished.
02:30I think it's a good thing for other countries to come in.
02:34Some of the countries have a certain type of boat that could help us.
02:39Some of the countries would be a little helpful.
02:41Remember, it only takes a couple of people
02:44to screw up the strain, a couple of terrorists.
02:47You don't need their militaries to beat it.
02:50But all you need is a few people dropping mines here and there.
02:53And, you know, you louse it up.
02:55So, we need, I would really, I'm demanding that these countries come in and protect their own territory.
03:03Because it is their territory.
03:05It's the place from which they get their energy.
03:09And they should come and they should help us protect it.
03:14You could make the case that maybe we shouldn't even be there at all,
03:17because we don't need it.
