00:15Hello and welcome to another episode of Around the Verse! I'm Sandy Gardner and I'm Chris Roberts this week
00:21We get up close and personal with a new and improved PU group system and Loremaker's guide to the galaxy
00:27takes us to Caliban
00:28Yes, but first let's check in with Ricky Jutley for a Star Citizen project update.
00:33Hi everyone, who's ready for another Persistent Universe project update?
00:38Let's get started. We start in the world of Characters. A tonne of progress has
00:43been made with the Facial Rig tool. You can see it being used here on an angry-looking Vanduul.
00:57Mining is one of the biggest focuses of Alpha-3-2. Check out where we are at with it. Everyone's
01:03been working really hard to make mining a fun and involving mechanic. We think you're really
01:09going to love getting to grips with it when it reaches the PU.
01:41Front Collision.
01:53We've also been working on the kiosk that you'll visit to sell and refine your extracted minerals.
01:59It's an exciting feature to add as it marks another small step towards building the in-game economy.
02:05The audio team have been doing their part to enhance future PU missions.
02:10Check out how this early track enhances the beauty and calm of a few derelict areas around the verse.
02:30The idea is to set a mysterious and somber mood while encouraging the player to keep exploring.
02:54Don't worry, we've not forgotten about blowing stuff up.
02:57The audio team are busy with sound effects too, like this probe explosion.
03:06The new party system is being tested and tweaked, although full spectrum and chat integration isn't ready just yet.
03:14As you can see, power allocation has been added to ships.
03:17How you assign power makes a big difference to the performance of your ship's systems and components.
03:25Developments to core tech allow us to implement changing weather on the planets you'll be visiting soon in the PU.
03:33This is the current state of the wind on Hurston, which plays an important part to the feel of the
03:38planet as a whole.
03:39And finally, the new guns that we've highlighted over the last few weeks here on ATV are ready to go.
03:46Check out the final audio effects for the Gemini F55.
03:58And the KSAC Armed Scalpel Sniper Rifle.
04:12That's all for this week, gang.
04:13Until next time, back to you in the studio.
04:17Thanks, Ricky.
04:18Yeah, with Alpha 3.2 live in the PTU, the first wave test group, subscribers and concierge
04:23have been working out any leftover bugs for the many improvements and new mechanics seen in our weekly updates.
04:28One feature that's getting a lot of attention is the group system.
04:32Community feedback and the results of the poll we launched after the release of 3.1
04:36made it clear that easier access to playing with friends is a top priority for players.
04:40Yeah, so let's take a look at the new system and hear all about it from the guys that worked
04:45on it in this week's feature.
04:53The group system is the system behind the scenes that manages all the requests for creation of groups, invitations and
05:00disbands.
05:01And so that system is basically the only system responsible for persisting these groups across reboots, restarts.
05:08So it's a resilient system that can live for a long period of time and manage a high number of
05:14groups.
05:14So we're going to be taking a look at the new group system.
05:17It's pretty exciting what this is going to be doing in the future.
05:19But for now, there's only a certain few features that are going to be in the game for the end
05:22user.
05:23Number one, what we have is we now have a contacts menu that lets people either add players to their
05:28contacts
05:28or invite them to party just by F clicking on their face.
05:32So you're able to add somebody to a party that way.
05:36You're also able to add them to your contact list so they'll appear there now.
05:40You'll see now as soon as I added that person to my party, I now have an AR marker here
05:44which is going to show them on the map of where they are so I can help find them if
05:47we get separated while we're off on a different planet.
05:49So the group systems is two things. It's a replacement for our current party system to play with your friends.
05:57And long term, it's a more generic solution for any ways that players will be grouping up together.
06:03On the development side, we want to reduce the latency and the quarrying as much as we can
06:12so that when the players interact with something and when they make actions on it,
06:19we don't want to always query for like across the services and then get the result.
06:24This will have the latency to reduce it as much as possible.
06:27We're caching the information of the party effectively, proactively,
06:36before even you want to have the information.
06:39So it's sort of a tool that other programmers will get to use, other programmers and designers, to facilitate their
06:47features.
06:48So the prime example right now that players will see in 3.2 is quantum linking.
06:53Quantum linking needs the group system or the player parties to know who is playing together like,
06:59oh, you, me, and Joe are going to quantum jump.
07:02So the programmers working on the quantum linking need to ask our code,
07:06okay, who is actually together right now? And like, what are the properties of this group?
07:12This is the part of the system where we enforce party rules, which means you can only be in one
07:17party,
07:18forcing that every group has a leader, that if the leader leaves the group, the leadership is transferred.
07:23A group can change at any time. So maybe the quantum linking is just about to get started,
07:28and then your buddy finally accepts the invite you sent them five minutes ago,
07:32and now the groups have changed, the people in the group has changed.
07:35So we need to have these systems listening for events.
07:38The group system really sits in the middle of all these other services by bringing all these capabilities
07:44to other systems in the game backend.
07:47What's more exciting is we're building this, like, foundation for more complicated features in the future.
07:53The first one being the lobby service, which will replace the current chat implementation.
07:58Currently, the game only has server chat, which is per instance,
08:03and so this lobby service, which is attached to the group system,
08:06will be able to provide chat in different settings.
08:09So, like, if I invite some good friend of mine into a party right now,
08:13like, we're playing together, we're chatting up a store,
08:15and we're having a great conversation, there's good jokes in there,
08:17and we want to remember this later, this will be saved on the website,
08:21because they're actually directly integrated.
08:22And this is something that we're making new UI to facilitate to as well.
08:27So, instead of just having the visor chat over on the side of the screen,
08:30and just, like, a little bit of real estate, and you're typing up,
08:33we're putting chat into MobiGlass as well, so you can manage different tabs
08:36and have, like, a larger conversation history there that's visible,
08:40and with different friends and contacts.
08:42If we bring up our MobiGlass app, we can go into the comm link.
08:46We have the same options here.
08:48where you can kick from party, leave party, remove from contacts.
08:51But what this also has is now the chat function here.
08:56And as you'll see, it shows up the same as it would in your visor.
09:00So you can coordinate with your fellow party members,
09:04wherever you are within the Star Citizen universe,
09:07and regardless of if they happen to be looking at their MobiGlass at the time,
09:10or they're in the, you know, just running around first person,
09:13they'll still be able to see the same chat messages.
09:15And the future goal is all of this is going to be directly integrated with Spectrum,
09:18so you could type on your client, log off, and get on your computer later
09:22and talk to those same friends in the same conversation thread.
09:25This will be really interesting, so the players outside of the game
09:29and who is currently playing the game will have access to the same chat system
09:35and make conversation and invite them into the game.
09:39It's really giving more tools to empower community playing with friends, you know,
09:44better ways to play together, better ways to get involved and engaged.
09:50Thanks guys, we've got a lot to look forward to in terms of playing with friends in 3.2.
09:56Yes, definitely. So it's going to be very cool to see how players use and react to the new system,
10:01and also the implications relating to other aspects of gameplay are very exciting,
10:04so looking forward to seeing what you guys do with it in 3.2.
10:07Yes, and you can tune in to Reverse the Verse live on Twitch tomorrow at noon PDT
10:11for even more insight into the group system.
10:14Yeah, so now let's go to Adam Weiser for a brief history of the Caliban system
10:19in a new installment of Lawmaker's Guide to the Galaxy.
10:23Hi, welcome to another episode of Lawmaker's Guide to the Galaxy.
10:27I'm Adam Weiser, writer here at the Los Angeles studio,
10:30and if you've never watched this show before, it's a chance for a member of the lore team
10:34to sit down and give you a tour of one of the many systems you'll be seeing in the Star
10:38Citizen universe.
10:39Today, I'll be taking you to a system that you probably shouldn't visit in the game.
10:44It's a Vanduul system. It's called Caliban, and it's a location where the Vanduul basically obliterated 500 years of human
10:53history
10:53over the course of just two days.
10:56So, yeah, if you're going to be heading there in the game, there's little doubt that you're going to be
11:01looking for trouble.
11:02So, let's head off now and learn a little bit about Caliban.
11:07Now, Caliban was first discovered in 2341 by Ashley Gahn.
11:13She was a hauler that was working in the null system at the time when a group of pirates swarmed
11:22her.
11:23Now, she quickly QT'd to a different location to get away from them.
11:29She started a series of scans to ensure she wasn't being tracked,
11:33and when she did that, she discovered this strange space anomaly,
11:36which ended up being a jump point connecting the null system to Caliban.
11:41Now, after discovering this, she immediately went to the UNE and turned in the data on where the jump point
11:51was.
11:52She named the system after her father and then disappeared from the public eye,
11:57even though she would go on to become quite famous for making this discovery.
12:01Now, when military pathfinders eventually went into the Caliban system,
12:05they found something that was quite shocking, actually.
12:09They discovered out here on Caliban 4F, which is a moon of a gas giant out here,
12:17they discovered a human shack that had been there for a while,
12:21and there were crates of ore and different valuable materials that were in the shack at the time.
12:26Now, this threw Ashley Gahn's discovery story into disarray.
12:30People were questioning whether she was maybe a former smuggler or pirate who had turned on her crew
12:36and given up this information to the UNE as a way to basically get out.
12:40There were many others that actually came forward and claimed that they were the ones who actually discovered the system,
12:45that this was their shack, and they deserved all the credit and praise to be heaped upon them for first
12:50discovering the system.
12:51Of course, those people couldn't quite supply the jump-drive data to prove that they were the ones to first
12:58discover the Caliban system.
13:00So even to this day, the mystery of who really discovered Caliban is still up in the air,
13:05and UEE documentation credits the discovery to both Ashley Gahn and Unknown.
13:11Now, there were plenty of reasons why humanity really liked the Caliban system,
13:17and the first begins with the star at its center.
13:21The star at the heart of Caliban is a Type G main sequence star,
13:26which is very similar to the same kind of spectral class as the star at the center of the Sol
13:31system.
13:32So it's like our sun, we were very familiar that we knew what to expect from it,
13:37and as you can see here as we back out, there are even two planets in the system's green band,
13:44which was another reason why we were very interested in the system.
13:49Third, the system was just chocked full of resources, starting right here with Caliban 1.
13:56Now, this was a rocky planet that we basically ripped all the resources from in an effort to build up
14:03Caliban 2,
14:05which is known better as Kryon.
14:09Now, Kryon has the capital of Boreo, which today is basically slowly being devoured by giant Vanduul harvesters
14:20that are ripping up whatever is left in the dirt and the ash of this destroyed city.
14:26But at the time of human occupation, Boro was kind of the cosmopolitan heart
14:31of what was essentially this frontier planet and this entire frontier system,
14:36the very edge of human expansion at that time.
14:39Now, it was that dichotomy of mixing both the culture and the frontier style
14:44that I think really attracted people to the Caliban system and brought them out there in droves.
14:50It wasn't long after its founding that Caliban and Boreo had populations well in the millions,
14:56and that just kept expanding.
14:58Now, this popularity also made it a prime target during the Tavaran Wars,
15:03particularly the Second Tavaran War, where Kryon here,
15:07there were actual land battles between Tavaran forces and human forces on Kryon.
15:12The most famous being the Battle of Koran Pass in 2605.
15:16This was an event where basically three Nova tanks held off an entire Tavaran strike team
15:22for close to 16 hours until reinforcements could arrive and help them win the battle.
15:29Now, following the Second Tavaran War, the planet was in disrepair
15:33and kind of looking to put itself back together when another tragic event happened.
15:39This one on February 18th, 2617.
15:42And as we back out here, I'll show you exactly what it was.
15:45And on that date, in 2617, the jump point that Ashley Gon had discovered
15:53between the Null system and Caliban collapsed.
15:56It just disappeared.
15:58Now, this freaked people out, but luckily there were plenty of other jump points.
16:02this jump point here to Oberon was still in existence,
16:08so humanity was able to get people and resources out of the system.
16:12It wasn't completely closed off from the rest of humanity.
16:16But the fact that Caliban did have unstable jump point connections freaked people out.
16:23Many people left the system.
16:24Some who had probably left the system during the Second Tavaran War
16:29just never came back after that time.
16:32Which, to be quite honest, was probably for the better.
16:35Because only decades later, starting in 2681,
16:40Van Duel raiding parties started to hit the system.
16:44Now, this was something that...
16:46It was an infrequent occurrence, but it was still very devastating, very shocking.
16:51An occurrence that unfortunately became a way of life for the people of Caliban.
16:56And over the course of two centuries, the Van Duel basically softened up
17:01the Caliban system, the human occupation there.
17:06They explored all the different reaches of the system.
17:09Until finally, in 2884, they were able to get a clan big enough together
17:14to come in and take the system for their own.
17:17This, of course, is now known in the history books as the Fall of Caliban.
17:22And there were, at the time, while humans were still here,
17:25there were early warning sensors set up in the system
17:28to detect when Van Duel's were entering the system.
17:33Unfortunately, those early warning sensors were either in disrepair
17:37or had been disabled by certain people who maybe wanted to mask
17:41the activities that they were doing in the system.
17:43So by the time the squadron in charge with keeping Caliban safe realized
17:48that a massive Van Duel clan was en route, it was already way too late.
17:54The squad leader, Commander Randall, basically told her squadron
17:58that their success will not be judged on how many confirmed kills they rack up,
18:02but on how many human lives they saved.
18:05And that's exactly what they did for over two days until the UE Navy was able to get resources into
18:10the system.
18:11This lone squadron basically stood up against a massive, overwhelming Van Duel fleet
18:16and did their damnedest to basically get humanity out of the system
18:21and to the safety of other systems.
18:23Now, the losses have never been officially reported by the Navy,
18:28but they were obviously devastating.
18:30So much so that the Navy retired the squadron immediately after the battle
18:34in honor of the heroic sacrifice that they gave for humanity in the system.
18:41And to this day, that squadron is known in the annals of military history as the Lost Squad.
18:47Now, again, when the Fall Caliban occurred in 2884,
18:52it was basically the end of human history in the system.
18:56It's been under Van Duel control ever since then,
18:59but there's still a few other things in the system that are worth checking out and telling you guys about.
19:06Past Caliban 2, we have Caliban 3, which is right out here.
19:11Now, this is a desert planet that we were actually in the process of terraforming
19:16to make human habitable when the Van Duel attack happened.
19:20The giant terraforming machines that were there kind of helping change the atmosphere
19:25fell into disrepair and came crashing back down into the planet,
19:29so it reverted back to its natural state where it currently remains.
19:34If we back out a little bit, you will see a step too far.
19:38But just past Caliban 3, you will see a Caliban Belt Alpha.
19:44This asteroid belt is just jam-packed full of resources that we spent plenty of time over the 500 years
19:52pulling out.
19:53There is still a lot there, and we're pretty certain that the Van Duel are pulling out their fair share
19:58of resources
19:59from this asteroid belt right now.
20:01Just past that, we have Caliban 4, which is a gas giant.
20:06You see it's kind of greenish-gray in color right here.
20:09This has silicates and iron in the atmosphere, which give it that color.
20:13Again, you see the moon surrounding it, Caliban 4F being the moon up here
20:21that the human structure was found on when Pathfinders first came into the system.
20:26And then if we back out even further, we will find the last planet in the system, Caliban 5,
20:31which is a protoplanet that we didn't pay too much attention to when we were in control of the system
20:36for those 500 years.
20:37But recent military scans seem to suggest that the Van Duel are strip mining this planet.
20:44No one knows quite why, but there's obviously something there of value or importance that the Van Duel are trying
20:51to go after at the moment.
20:52So that's your very quick history of the Caliban system, a system that you could say is maybe a little
21:01bit cursed with all the bad things that have happened there.
21:02But yeah, hope you enjoyed, hope you got to learn a little bit about Caliban, and we'll see you next
21:07time on Loremaker's Guide to the Galaxy.
21:11Good stuff, Adam. It's always sad when a system falls to the Van Duel.
21:15It certainly is.
21:16And now, if you haven't already checked out Drake Interplanetary's newest ship, the Vulture, take a look at what this
21:21light salvage vessel can do,
21:23and don't forget to get your questions in for the upcoming Q&A with the ship's designers.
21:27And don't forget, new episodes of Calling All Devs air every Monday, where you can submit and vote on which
21:33questions are answered on the show.
21:34It's your chance to ask our developers all your most burning questions.
21:39Yeah, like when is the carrot coming out?
21:41When is it coming out? Don't let Jared hear you ask that.
21:44Okay, I won't.
21:46So anyway, thanks to our subscribers for sponsoring all of our shows, and of course, to our backers for supporting
21:51the development of both Star Citizen and Squadron 42.
21:54And that's it for us this week. Until next time, we will see you...
21:58Around the Verse!
22:33I'll see you next time.
22:40Thanks for watching! For the latest and greatest in Star Citizen and Squadron 42, you can subscribe to our channel,
