00:00That's another great example, by the way, of what makes these games so charming is that it's a great mix
00:05of different gameplay mechanics, right?
00:07Yeah, you have your exploration, you have your puzzle solving, and you have Hula Girl Stella.
00:13That would've been funnier if I could say her name right.
00:16Hula Girl is the Hula Girl!
00:20Hula Girl!
00:27Ciao a tutti!
01:06Oh no!
01:07So, yes, I wanted to give Foreman Bob a chance to speak e non talk over him, ma questo livello
01:13è all about foremen che hanno stato wrongato da Idle Monsters.
01:16The big thing about Spyro 2, the big difference between Spyro 2 and Spyro 1 is where Spyro 1 was
01:22all about collecting dragons and rescuing dragons, Spyro 2 introduced a bunch of this whole other world of NPCs and
01:29many games and challenges to explore and do.
01:32I want to know where that hammer came from, by the way, that foreman.
01:34You know, he snuck that into his pocket, you know, you never know.
01:39The foremen are mysterious and they will not show that way.
01:43Some secrets will go to the grave of the foremen.
01:46That's true.
01:47We've asked them and so Spyro 2 also introduced swimming.
01:51So in Spyro 1 you could not swim, in Spyro 2 you can, obviously, as Rustin, who's playing right now
01:56and killing it, is showing you.
01:59And Spyro is able to swim safely as a dragon.
02:02This is good to know.
02:04He is.
02:04He is waterproof.
02:05He learned a lot from the first game.
02:06Moneybags teaches it.
02:07In Spyro 2, that's right, for a small fee.
02:09I am locked in here with all our tools, and the giant idle heads won't let the workers in unless
02:14we can solve the three puzzles they've made.
02:17Okay, got it, bud.
02:18The voices are so good.
02:19The voice is so good.
02:20I love Foreman, bud.
02:21If you have trouble, come back and talk to me.
02:23Okay, bud.
02:24Yeah.
02:25Hold on a second.
02:26Quick lore question here.
02:28Do all the foremen in the universe have names to start with B?
02:32Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:33Yes!
02:34Oh, I love it.
02:35And for us, you know, we want to get this right.
02:38The most important thing for all your work is to make sure all the foremen have B names.
02:44But truly, though, like, this project has been a particularly challenging and wonderful opportunity for us because fans care so
02:52much about every detail, and we do, too, and we want to get it right.
02:55So all the characters have the same names.
02:59And that's all we've done.
03:02All the characters have the same names.
03:04because all the art has been lovingly recrafted.
03:08Sorry, dudes.
03:10You got this, dude.
03:12It's been lovingly recrafted.
03:13All the levels.
03:16So we actually built a tool for this game so that we could make sure that we were getting all
03:20of the gameplay exactly right.
03:21So we built this tool called Spiroscope, which allowed us to, because we didn't have access to the original assets,
03:27we built, we had to build this tool internally that allowed us to extract all of the original mesh, original
03:33placements, and even the pathing of the characters so we could bring that into this modern recreation that we're doing
03:40now.
03:40So it's, I remember when I first saw it at one of our engineers' desks, I was blown away.
03:46And it's been a huge undertaking for us to get this right, but for us, getting this exactly right for
03:51the fans is something we take super seriously.
03:58You know what, bud?
04:00I also have a sensitive stomach, and I understand.
04:03Sometimes ten fish, you have to make sure.
04:05I love that it reminds me that the idol is very picky.
04:09Yes.
04:09I love the idol.
04:10Very picky.
04:11Yeah, and that's another thing, is just the amount of variety in these games is really bananas.
04:16There are idol monsters, there are hockey players, there are, I mean, it is just, and no other examples.
04:22Oh, no, no, nothing else, just hockey players and idols.
04:25There are capybaras driving cars and boats.
04:28Josh, can you just list some of the things in these games?
04:30Some of the over 400 characters.
04:32Because it is amazing the amount of content that Josh specifically has led the art direction on.
04:38Oh, my God, but an amazing team of talented concept artists and modelers and animators.
04:42Like, I can't tell you how much effort went into bringing this world back to life.
04:46Like Nick was just saying, there's three games with over 100 levels and 500 plus characters.
04:55Maybe 600, I haven't counted recently.
04:59Yeah, 10 million.
04:59But yeah, we took the original characters from those games 20 years ago and tried to do our best job
05:06of maintaining the spirits of those characters, bringing as much new energy to them as we could.
05:13And the team really just stepped up.
05:16Yeah, I kind of want to overemphasize this.
05:19It's, you know, for our audience, it's not like you guys took the, you know, the Spyro games and just
05:24turned the dial up.
05:25And you're like, I'm just going to turn up the visuals to 11 and it's going to look way better.
05:29If you're aware of where that dial exists, please let us know.
05:33Oh, yeah, yeah, please.
05:33We lost it.
05:34That's actually exactly what we did.
05:36But Josh, to the point, though, is that, you know, this is very much, as we were talking about before,
05:41a craft for your studio.
05:43I mean, you guys had to go in there and by hand and very meticulously kind of go over everything.
05:48Everything. Every inch of the world, every character.
05:52Like Nick was saying with Spyroscope, we actually extracted the original level meshes so that we could take screenshots of
05:57important vistas and paint over them and try to find, like, the best way to enhance it and modernize it.
06:03We did that with the environments.
06:05We did that with the characters.
06:06We did that with literally everything.
06:08The animations.
06:09We looked at what the original animation looks like and we riffed off of that.
06:12You know, like we were trying to be as reverential to the original stuff as we could possibly be.
06:18And there were some cases where we took our liberties where we thought we could improve upon things or make
06:25things more fun and playful because that's kind of what Toys for Bob is about is, like, finding great wacky
06:30things that get us psyched.
06:32So, for example, we just saw the idol who had a metal shield.
06:35And these guys all have, like, marshmallows on sticks.
06:38So we turned his metal shield into the top of a barbecue.
06:41Of course.
06:42Because why wouldn't you?
06:43Because why wouldn't an idol who has a hot dog on a stick also have a barbecue?
06:46Yeah, of course.
06:47Peter, maybe you can speak to this, too, because you've been awfully quiet over here, sir.
06:51I have been. I just chime in a little bit, that's all.
06:53But tell us a little bit.
06:53I know that exploration is key in this game.
06:57I mean, is that something that you guys embraced during the development process?
07:00Yeah, I mean, that's part of the heart of what made the original games, especially, like, for me.
07:04I can speak clearly for me.
07:05But it's this world of awe and wonder.
07:07Like, you're a little kid out there saving all of the other dragons and helping all these worlds become, like,
07:12free.
07:13So making sure that all of the pieces were coming together to give you the sense of wonder and awe
07:18as you're exploring and finding all these new places in this gigantic world was key.
07:23And now we're going to see another little puzzle action here.
07:25Yeah, another little puzzle.
07:26Oh, bud.
07:27Can we install this giant glowing stone dance floor into my home?
07:32Yeah, that would be really nice to have.
07:33It would really bring the room together, I think.
07:38I like that it also gives you difficulty level for the challenges.
07:41It does, yeah.
07:41That is in parody with the original games.
07:43You're like, and we chose those at random.
07:45There's no rhyme or reason to the difficulty settings at all.
07:47That's right.
07:48We feel it out.
07:49We just feel it out.
07:52But, yeah, so this game, I mean, just the amount of puzzles to solve.
07:56and unique challenges.
07:58I mean, all the levels have these, like, crazy unique challenges.
08:03And the original game was all about rescuing dragons.
08:07It was all about challenges.
08:08And the amount of NPCs, too.
08:10There were so many different, I mean, we were talking about capybaras, foremen.
08:15Ice monsters.
08:17Ice monsters.
08:18Spoilers.
08:19Now I know there's ice monsters.
08:20There are ice monsters.
08:21Thanks, guys.
08:21I'm sorry.
08:22Ice builders.
08:23I'm sorry.
08:24Yeah.
08:24Yeah, and the ice monsters are ghosts the entire time.
08:27So I'm sorry to spare that for you as well.
08:29Wow.
08:30I would have never known.
08:33Yeah, it's just, it's gorgeous.
08:35And it, you know, it's just really cool to see something that has such a history
08:39and such a huge fandom kind of get the loving treatment from your studio that it deserves.
08:45Yeah, and we're, we're just, you know, three dudes here and, and, but we are, you know,
08:50representing a huge group of incredibly talented people who work so hard on this and really,
08:54really passionate about this.
08:55It's really important to us that we get this right.
08:58And so you, that's why you have everyone's names are the same.
09:02That was the number one thing on the list.
09:04Yes, yes.
09:05You didn't change the Spyro's name to Frank.
09:09That's right.
09:10Yeah.
09:10Frank the Dragon.
09:12It's not, yeah, no, we, we really.
09:13It doesn't have the same ring to it.
09:14It doesn't.
09:15It doesn't.
09:16It was truly a labor of love.
09:18Like, everyone was just so excited when we found out we had the opportunity to make this game.
09:23And, um.
09:23The Hammer.
09:24This still gets me.
09:26I've seen this already and it's so good.
09:29And he's just bashing, just bashing his head with it.
09:32I have to say, to Peter's point earlier about going through this world and having that sense of awe.
09:36And we're like, moments like that are everywhere in this game.
09:39Like every level has that level of surprising thing that will make you laugh.
09:43And I.
09:44And you're not talking, you're not just talking about, when you say this game,
09:46you're not just talking about Spyro 2.
09:48I mean, you're talking about the whole trilogy.
09:50The entire Reignited Trilogy.
09:51Spyro 3, Spyro 1, all of them.
09:53The amount of work, this is a handcrafted effort.
09:56And our team really wanted to do this.
09:57Would you say it's an artisanal effort?
09:59I would say it's artisanal.
10:00It is free range as well.
10:03That's important to us.
10:05Yeah, this is.
10:07I'm happy to announce here on PlayStation Underground that Spyro Reignited Trilogy is organic.
10:12Right.
10:13And farm to fork video gaming.
10:14This is robotic farm to table.
10:16Totally compostable.
10:20All right.
10:21We're nearing the end of the demo, too.
10:24We have a little dancing section.
10:26Oh, yeah.
10:27This is the best part.
10:29Ladies and gentlemen, it's all been leading up to this.
10:34You got a little platforming action in there, though.
10:36That's another great example, by the way, of what makes these games so charming is that
10:40it's a great mix of different gameplay mechanics, right?
10:43You have your exploration.
10:45You have your puzzle solving.
10:47And you have Hoola Girl Stella.
10:50That would have been funnier if I could say her name right.
10:52Hoola Girl is the haunted version.
10:57Hoola Girl!
10:59Seriously, the games are all about exploration and discovery and puzzle solving.
11:04And for us, when remastering this, we wanted the Reignited Trilogy to honor the original
11:10game.
11:11So from the gameplay perspective, we wanted to keep it the same because the game's already
11:15fun.
11:16People love these games.
11:17So we wanted to find ways to modernize and improve things where we could.
11:20For example, we now have camera control on the right stick.
11:22And we just made some choices to honor the originals, but they're amazing games already.
11:29I just cut Hoola Girl Stella off.
11:31No, no, that's okay, because now we can celebrate with a dance routine.
11:35Oh, yeah.
11:37Ladies and gentlemen, this has been an amazing look at Spyro Reignited Trilogy is out September
11:4621st on PS4.
11:48Peter, Nick, and Josh, thank you gentlemen all so much for joining me on the program.
11:51And until next time, this has been PlayStation Underground.
11:54We'll see you soon.
