Do fans really want Wednesday Night Football?
Transcript
00:09hey the nfl is absolute king at keeping themselves in the news cycle they know what they do i mean
00:18they do it 365 days a year they find themselves uh in in the news and obviously this week we've
00:24got free agency going on i mean they start the week with a tampering period they
00:29just manufacture to come up with something else to keep the news going and then there's this story
00:34that's leaking out that they're considering a thanksgiving eve game so the wednesday before
00:43thanksgiving the night before thanksgiving they're considering having a football game played on that
00:46day i mentioned yesterday right the biggest bar day of the year that it may actually happen as early
00:52as this season i i saw something else earlier where people were saying okay it would make sense
00:58if you get to the 18 game schedule and then you have two bye weeks and then you could work
01:04it in
01:05where you're going to have a team that's you know where because you don't want to have the team go
01:10with three days rest right you want to be able to there would be a team coming off a bye
01:14would play
01:14on the wednesday night game which kind of makes sense if you're going to do it that way
01:18but is the nfl in danger of of killing the golden goose at some point by having is it possible
01:26to
01:26have too much football did mark cuban say something like five years ago that the nfl has to watch
01:32itself from getting too big you know i don't know mark cuban i forget the i forget the actual quote
01:37i can tell you eating itself basically you know i can tell you that on this show we have talked
01:42about
01:42it a lot that we're worried about the sports bubble bursting because just you're you're doing too
01:47much just for the sake of money just for the obviously the nfl does everything that they do
01:52is for money the tv contracts get bigger and bigger the salary caps get bigger and bigger the players
01:58make more and more money the owners make more and more money and every move that they do is because
02:03of that every single thing that they do is to maximize a dollar so if you're going to add another
02:09game on the schedule go from 17 to 18 of course it comes with more money and the players they
02:15can
02:15bitch and moan about it all they want but they're the ones that have to sign off on it and
02:18and they
02:18typically will because they know it means more money for them to put that's putting the cart before the
02:24horse a little bit when it comes to the 18th game they're talking about adding this this wednesday
02:28night game as early as this season do you like the idea of of the nfl played on a wednesday
02:39i don't think it takes away thursday you know pomp and circumstance of the lions thursday
02:47thanksgiving game and dallas's tradition while not quite as long obviously but if they you know
02:53most people who are listening right now they grew up in the cowboys always played the second game on
02:58thanksgiving maybe added the third look people are going to watch it no matter what i i don't like it
03:06i don't
03:06think you need to see it on a wednesday uh it has to be for teams coming off a bye
03:10i don't think you
03:12can play with two days rest yeah i don't think you can do that either this is just this is
03:19just strange
03:20for me kang we've talked about this a lot on the show that the the sports bubble bursting we talk
03:25a lot
03:25about you and i are lockstep when it comes to the nfl does everything for money maximize that dollar
03:32is this was this predictable or is this just dumb well it could be both yeah you know but i
03:38mean dumb
03:38is a sense of do we want it well it doesn't matter if it's getting the views and the ratings
03:42they want
03:42right and yes the nfl is just a money-making machine that's why they're going international
03:46that's why they want to be involved in olympics the everyday football thing now wednesday yes i do think
03:53it's real i think this is what they want ultimately when they add the extra game there will be a
03:57second
03:57bye week to help the scheduling out stoning because no team is going to play two days rest or whatever
04:01they're going to need a four or five days rest maybe right i mean look at thanksgiving those teams
04:06play on three days rest right um so it's already been done now they just have to spread out the
04:10schedule enough last year people were outraged when they had the you know the black friday games
04:16right and things like that this is just that this that week is going to be crazy it's just gonna
04:20be
04:21football every day and i think the ultimate goal gator is every single day of the week there will be
04:25an nfl game because if you look at the ratings last year of the top 100 programs on tv over
04:3190 some
04:32of them were nfl games people cannot get enough whether it's a good matchup or not and and i guess
04:39you know i'm just sitting here rolling my eyes thinking about this idea and and maybe i need to
04:43step back and realize it's not going to affect us here because the lions will never play on the day
04:49before thanksgiving the lions always play thanksgiving so whoever plays the night before do i care
04:55i i guess i i have the option to not care because my team's not going to be playing right
05:00and if you're
05:02out on a wednesday night like a lot of people are it'll be if you're in a bar it'll be
05:05on the tv so
05:06you know the red wings have a at least they used to have a history of playing you know on
05:11the wednesday
05:11before thanksgiving yeah uh does that does that change that up at all i don't know i it just
05:17it rubs me the wrong way when the nfl is they're working backwards in the week you want to add
05:22more
05:22saturday games after the college football season is done okay fair you know that that's fine um
05:28but the nfl it does seem like they just want to take over every night of the week
05:31and it's a bit much uh let's go to the phones 248-539-9797 alan is in bloomfield alan you're
05:39next up here
05:39971 hey you guys uh enjoying the show uh you stoney brought up the uh borum if anybody had heard
05:47of
05:47them so same thing most of us hadn't so i did a little research and last year i don't know
05:53what
05:53week it was but he graded out with pro football focus as the number two tackle i think was week
05:5911
06:00so he has potential and at 26 and i think also mazes 26 they're both coming in off of good
06:06years or
06:07so their confidence and maybe they've learned enough over their trial period that these they're
06:13going to be solid players for the lions uh you know also ratledge had a higher pro football focus
06:21rating than ragnow did when he was a guard in his rookie year now we know what frank turned in
06:26when
06:26he went became a center but if ratledge just gets a little bit better we've got a we've got a
06:32guard for
06:3210 years well yeah the same thing with talik williams after week five he was a different player
06:40and they rated him as the 20th out of 64 an interior defensive lineman so last year's draft
06:47i think it's a lot better than what people perceive you interior linemen don't have sacks
06:53catches for distance and all that that people can see so uh yeah but you know what brian
07:00or alan excuse me at some of the games i sit next to gator and we've watched talik williams and
07:07he was
07:07just there he we he didn't ever say oh boy he certainly has room for improvement yes um he didn't
07:13he didn't stand out he didn't look like he was an impact guy uh from last year there are very
07:18few
07:18plays where i think you you would say that you watched it and say okay get no no it was
07:22an impact
07:22play now if you purse it and go through every single play with the the all 12 all 24 or
07:29actually
07:29the all 22 look on your uh on your tv and and go through it that way you'll find different
07:35things
07:35i i always caution when it comes to pro football fuck focus focus you're good i was good when it
07:44comes to pro football focus i i take it with a grain of salt because they don't know everything what
07:48was supposed to happen on the play absolutely and and statistics lie and you know sacks did the guy
07:54get get in garbage time and whatever but if i if we have a second there's two names i'd like
07:58to bring
07:58up in this year's draft and i i think the safety from oregon tianeman is a perfect fit for the
08:04lions i think he'd be great he doesn't get met he might get picked ahead of time but he brings
08:08he
08:09has no weaknesses uh before the combine i you know his instincts were number one he's a great tackler
08:16and then he runs a four three five forty and he can stay with so now the lions could use
08:22him
08:22or they could at some time do a single high safety dylan theneman would be a great addition
08:28uh to any nfl team by the way in oregon and play to produce and lastly the the other name
08:33is jacob
08:34rodriguez the linebacker out of texas tech and that's doug's guy check him out he was a uh quarterback
08:41in virginia transfers to tech becomes a linebacker and he is amazing and and they could get him in the
08:48second round they might have to trade up a little for him uh you get chaneman and rodriguez and now
08:53that
08:53defense looks totally different well you hope so if they fulfill the potential by the way christian
08:58izian who the lions picked up today they signed from from tampa safety in reading a little bit
09:06during the break from some tampa writers and you know that type of thing they're not happy that
09:13they lost him they think he's really good well good so it could be a nice uh signing but again
09:19it's
09:19it's a brad holmes special it's a one-year deal right and borm is what a one-year deal as
09:23well
09:24i believe so okay so i mean i'm not going to get too fired up over guys that are one
09:28-year deals i think
09:29it's fine for this upcoming season and these are classic patching holes right that's what that's what
09:34it is i'd love to see somebody it's a long term that they're going to bank on here we go
09:39we got
09:39them and they have that with kate mays and even that that's a three-year deal that's fine that's fine
09:43but they still have to figure things out and find out who's going to be their starters
09:47because next year at the same time we're going to be doing this all over again because you got to
09:52and i got to fill holes because you you only sign guys to one-year deals but it happens every
09:56year
09:57this is the nfl and brad holmes is doing it his way and you know we're asking people today on
10:02the on
10:02the show uh what exactly do you think his plan is and and i do think that's his plan his
10:08plan is what
10:09it has been all along going to re-sign his own guys uh the guys that put time in here
10:13that they know
10:14about and if they're if they're quality players going to give them extensions in the meantime
10:19with free agency the plan with free agency is just to find guys going to fill in the holes for
10:24one
10:25year maybe we'll see more than that but i mean so far it's just one player they've got for more
10:29in one year i know 248-539-9797 this is 97.1
