00:30The second final of the Benson Hedges World Series Cup, played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of a
00:35crowd half an hour before the start of play of around 40,000, and they were still streaming in through
00:41the turnstiles.
00:42Tails.
00:44It's yours.
00:45Heads.
00:46Well, I know it's not going to rain today.
00:48We'll have a bet.
00:49Good luck, mate.
00:50All right, yeah, fine.
00:51Kim Hughes, any changes in the side?
00:53Yes, Ian, we brought Ken McLean for Geoff Thompson.
00:57Geoff's not injured at all, but it's been the best batting wicket so far this year at the MCG, and
01:03we feel that Ken's accuracy and this sort of thing would be handy today.
01:07And preferring to bat first today?
01:09Yes.
01:10It's a good wicket if we can get on and get plenty of runs on the board.
01:13Certainly it'll put a lot of pressure on it.
01:15There's going to be more people here this afternoon than what there is now, and I'm sure they'll all be
01:18behind us.
01:18Okay, good luck.
01:20And, Geoffrey, you haven't pulled the biggest contract of the year, have you?
01:22I wish I could say yes to him, but unfortunately, no, not.
01:26Richard's not playing, and we've brought Richard Webin straight from New Zealand into the side and replaced Bruce Edgar with
01:35Geoff Crowe.
01:35So it's a bit of a new-look side, but hopefully, you know, we can carry it off the day.
01:39Yeah, you must be disappointed that Richard hasn't been able to make it.
01:42But obviously, you know, he's a fine bowler, a good asset to any side in the world, and to lose
01:48him for the important games of the final is obviously a bit disappointing.
01:51But there's plenty of resolve on the side, and a bit like you, Ian, we're quite good fighters.
01:56Okay, good luck to you.
01:57Thanks for having me.
01:58Kim Hughes of Australia winning the toss, and Australia will bat first.
02:02Back to Richie Benno.
02:03Thanks, Ian.
02:04Well, that is a great start as far as the Australians are concerned.
02:06They've changed their minds about chasing runs, and now Kim Hughes, on this perfect batting strip, has won the toss
02:12and decided to bat.
02:14We pick up play now in the first over.
02:16No runs on the board, and Richard Webb, the replacement for Richard Hadley, is the bowler coming in to Graham
02:21Wood.
02:22Your commentators are Tony Gregg and Keith Stackpole.
02:28And Australia off the mark.
02:30Well, Richard Gregg will learn very quickly that he mustn't bowl short in one-day cricket in Australia.
02:35That was a very positive shot by Graham Wood.
02:40They'll feel it, and there's a mix-up, and it's...
02:43Oh!
02:45Well.
02:47It's a good job Wood kept going.
02:49That is the first stutter we've seen in the middle, and as a result, we nearly saw a run-out.
02:56It's in the air.
02:57There's a man out there that clears in the quick race of the boundary.
02:59It does.
03:0112 runs up the over.
03:03A sensational debut by Chatfield.
03:06Wood whipping him away.
03:09Australia on top of it.
03:10No wicket for 63 after 10 overs.
03:14He's got it.
03:15Great shot, Graham Wood.
03:17Brings up his 50, and what a magnificent one it is for his country.
03:23In great touch, but just short of a good length, and he ripped it over with mid-wicket, but raced
03:28away for four.
03:28So after 12 overs, Australia, no wicket for 74.
03:32Graham Wood, 51.
03:37Shots all around the ground.
03:3873 without loss.
03:39Smith doing a good job.
03:4021 on strike to Martin Sneddon.
03:44He's got hold of that.
03:45He's racing out towards the square leg boundary.
03:47That's four more.
03:48Pitching two short, Martin Sneddon.
03:50And Graham Wood on fire at the Melbourne Kicker ground.
03:53American flag, Australian flag, New Zealand flags.
03:56This capacity crowd.
03:59But in great value.
04:02Three overs for 13.
04:04Martin Sneddon.
04:07Wood going over the top.
04:08And quite safely, and away to the boundary.
04:12Very fast outfield.
04:13Ewan Chatfield having absolutely no chance of catching up with that one.
04:23Once again, Wood goes over the leg side field.
04:26And that's a magnificently hit shot.
04:28Just bouncing once before it crashes into the mid-wicket boundary.
04:32Wood in fantastic form here at the MCG.
04:36And brings up the 100.
04:38And that's the first time in this competition, the MCG series competition this season, that the openers have added a
04:46centre.
04:49Australia off to an excellent start.
04:5269 to Wood.
04:5331 to Smith.
04:55The 100 up in just 66 minutes.
04:57And Wood scoring at about twice the rate of Steve Smith.
05:02Steve Smith hasn't played all that badly.
05:04Played very well in fact.
05:06Full toss outside, leg stump.
05:08Wood going in the air.
05:09And it's got past.
05:12The field's been out there.
05:15Martin Sneddon attempting to take a very difficult outfield catch.
05:20In fact, it's almost in the same place that he caught Greg Chappell here a couple of years ago.
05:26And it was given not out.
05:28And a very similar style of catch.
05:31Low down, flat sort of chance.
05:34Sneddon gambling, going for the catch.
05:37And sliding into it.
05:39And now we're going to have the fifth bowler brought into the attack.
05:44Jeremy Coney.
05:49That's a long chase for John Wright.
06:11John Morrison to continue from the members' end.
06:18Well, that's a great shot.
06:19That'll still go for four.
06:21That was hit fiercely down the ground by Smith.
06:28And he's gone.
06:30So Coney, with that change of pace, has provided the first and most welcome breakthrough for New Zealand.
06:40And Graham Wood, polled by Coney, on 91.
06:46In fact, if Graham Wood was approaching that century, he wasn't going to hold back.
06:50He was still going to go after New Zealand bowlers.
06:54And he really sacrificed his innings.
06:56But he's got Australia off to a great start.
06:58This huge crowd at the MCG appreciating the start that Graham Wood has given his team today.
07:0491 runs.
07:05In a very quick time.
07:06Something now that Australia can really build on.
07:09One for 140.
07:14Oh, there's a great shot.
07:19Can kick that one down in the coaching manual.
07:29Oh, and he's got him.
07:32That's a fine performance there.
07:33Good captaincy from Howard to bring Chatfield back just at the right moment.
07:40And Kim Hughes gone.
07:45Good bowling change.
07:47Just outside off stump.
07:48Kim Hughes looking to work it through that vacant gully slip area down to third man for a single.
07:53And just a fine edge.
07:54And just a fine edge.
07:55Warren Lee's did the rest.
07:56So the Australian captain out.
07:58That's a great shot.
07:59A very quick 12.
07:59And Australia at two for 167.
08:05And it'll be Coney again from the outer end.
08:10That's a great shot.
08:16Alan Borda looking to step up the tempo now.
08:21Beautiful shot.
08:22Straight over the top of extra cover.
08:24Two bounces into the boundary there.
08:25Borda not bothering to take one step down the pitch.
08:29The moment he hit that, he knew it was four.
08:32Beautifully timed and purposely placed in the air over the infield.
08:38Just gave him a little bit of room there.
08:40And Alan Borda hit it straight over the top.
08:42Beautiful shot.
08:43Timed it.
08:44Never even bothered to run.
08:49Tied him down with a couple of good deliveries then.
08:52He gave that one a little bit of width.
08:53Gave Alan Borda the room he wanted.
08:55And he took full advantage.
08:57And he's gone.
08:57Caught and bowled.
09:00On that occasion Borda trying to force the ball an extra cover.
09:03Opening the face just a little bit.
09:05And I suspect it didn't quite come off the middle of the bat.
09:08And lobbed back to Chatfield the bowler.
09:10A big break through this for the New Zealanders.
09:13A little bit close to him.
09:14He came a bit of bat and bat there.
09:16And Chatfield accepting the chance.
09:20Gleefully.
09:21Picking up another wicket.
09:24That's three for 205 Australia.
09:28David Hooks the new batsman out there.
09:30And he's been welcomed to songs of Hooksy Hooksy.
09:37Oh good shot again.
09:39Down to deep mid wicket.
09:40And the man down there won't stop that one.
09:42So once again Hooks hitting the ball over the infield.
09:46And also hitting it into a gap.
09:49And as a result getting four very well played runs.
09:52Very popular here.
09:53David Hooks it's the end of the over.
09:55Three for 214.
09:5999 and one makes 100.
10:01And the crowd rise.
10:02And what a magnificent performance by this young man.
10:05They're three for two.
10:06They'll come back for three.
10:07A standing ovation from Stephen Smith.
10:10And rightly so.
10:11He's injected a lot of life into this Australian team.
10:14He's third in his limited over series.
10:17And what a time to make 100.
10:21It's in the air.
10:21And he stopped it.
10:22What a great effort from John Wright.
10:23Threw out his left hand.
10:25Mid-air.
10:25Knocked it down.
10:27Tremendous effort by Wright in short cover.
10:29Well can this lift New Zealand's performance in the field.
10:33That was a heroic effort from John Wright.
10:35As Hooks hit that with great power towards the extra cover boundary.
10:39Wright flinging himself to the left.
10:42And he's gone now.
10:44Middle stump.
10:45As he once again advanced down the wicket.
10:47And away to the leg side.
10:49And trying to slap that ball through the covers.
10:52And that's good bowling from Richard Webb.
10:55Despite being under fire.
10:57He maintained good line.
11:00And crashed into middle stump.
11:03So Smith goes at the very instant.
11:06I was saying he hadn't thrown it away.
11:08He didn't throw it away in the end.
11:09Webb got him out.
11:10Had a great performance from Steve Smith.
11:15Some delightful strokes and tremendous power.
11:19He alternated between delicate little late cuts.
11:21And crashing drives.
11:23With enormous power.
11:25And what a moment for him to walk off the field.
11:28To a standing ovation from 70,000 spectators.
11:34Chapel advancing.
11:35It's in the air.
11:36And John Wright is the man at mid-wicket.
11:37Who accepts the chance.
11:42Cairns.
11:42Again well bowled by Lance Cairns.
11:45He saw Chapel going outside the leg stump.
11:47Cairns followed him.
11:48Dug it in a bit short.
11:50And Chapel not getting on to the shot.
11:52But in fact he was very well cramped up by Cairns when he made contact.
11:56And a very simple chance taken by John Wright down at mid-on.
12:02Brooks gives himself room.
12:04Gets an edge.
12:05Gets an edge.
12:05Away down to third man.
12:06And that beats Ewan Chapel into defence.
12:14Brooks again giving himself room.
12:16And he's holed out to John Wright.
12:20John Wright getting amongst the catchers here as the late-order men attempt to smash the ball away over the
12:28infield.
12:29Lance Cairns.
12:30He's pulling figures at the moment.
12:32Seven overs now made from one for 45.
12:36McLean giving himself a bit of room.
12:38And he struck that magnificently.
12:41Right over the mid-off boundary.
12:43He's a tall man, King McLean.
12:46He's got six foot three.
12:48And that really was a magnificent hit.
12:52He goes through the offside.
12:54He's picked the gap.
12:56John Morrison will cut it off.
12:59In McLean thinking about a third.
13:01He goes back and he'll be run out.
13:03Going through from the third.
13:05And that was a good piece of work by Warren Lees.
13:08A few yards away from the stumps.
13:10And he had to throw with his gloves on.
13:16Way down to Webb at third man.
13:19Lawson will probably keep running.
13:20And he'll be run out quite comfortably by Warren Lees.
13:25So one run there to Lawson.
13:26And Australia finish with seven for 302.
13:32That's a marvellous performance from the Australian batsmen.
13:34They've looked a little bit jittery at some time during the Benson Hedges World Series Cup matches.
13:40But not today.
13:41After Kim Hughes won the toss, they gave a great exhibition of batting there.
13:44Against all the New Zealand bowlers.
13:47And the bowlers and fielders were quite helpless against that run onslaught.
13:50The opening stand of 140 in 25 overs between Wood and Steve Smith was quite tremendous.
13:56Because apart from hitting the ball very solidly, they played some delightful strokes as well.
14:016.06 the run rate needed by New Zealand.
14:04And 303 runs to win.
14:05And that is a very, very difficult task.
14:07They'll have to break some records in order to come out and level this series.
14:11We pick up play now in the first over.
14:13There are no runs on the board at the moment.
14:15And Geoff Lawson is coming into bowl to Glen Turn.
14:18Your commentators, Tony Gregg and Fred Truman.
14:22The competition.
14:23That one played away fine.
14:24It's racing down towards fine leg.
14:26Will Hodg make it?
14:27No, he won't.
14:28That's four.
14:29Leg by, signalled out there by umpire Crofter.
14:34That's out.
14:35He's got him.
14:36He's gone.
14:37That's a big breakthrough for Australia.
14:39Rod Marsh making no mistake with what looked like a big deflection to me.
14:43That's really, very good, accurate bowling by Rodney Hogg.
14:47And on that occasion, finding the outside edge.
14:49And Rod Marsh watched it all the way into those safe gloves of his.
14:55I went big deflection.
14:58Playing a little bit inside it, actually.
15:00But Rodney Hogg is the man who bowls so straight and hits people playing.
15:05Just a little bit of movement.
15:06That's the first wicket down for New Zealand.
15:08It's one for eight.
15:12So Howarth out there with New Zealand on one for eight.
15:15Australia were no wicket for 22.
15:17They got off to a flying start, did Australia.
15:19And eventually scored 302.
15:22Lawson to Turner.
15:22Down the next side.
15:23A big appeal there from Lawson.
15:24He's given him out.
15:25Turner, in fact, walked.
15:27Well, that's a big wicket for Australia.
15:29Rod Marsh didn't know he'd nicked the ball.
15:32And Turner, in fact, left the crease before the umpire put his finger up.
15:35So a little flying glance there from a ball going down the next side.
15:39Turner trying to play that fine down a fine leg, I think.
15:42And this is how it happened.
15:44Looking it down the next side.
15:46Rod Marsh never even bothered to appeal.
15:48It was just a bowler.
15:49Jeff Lawson and the umpire gave him out.
15:53Glenn Turner was walking before that happened.
15:55So that's a terrible blow for New Zealand.
15:57That's the second wicket down for eight.
16:04And that is the end of the New Zealand captain.
16:07Yorked by Jeff Lawson.
16:10New Zealand lose their third wicket.
16:18In the ninth over, a beautiful delivery from Jeff Lawson right up into the great Yorker length.
16:26And Jeff Lawson's arms are locked as the New Zealand captain, Jeff Howarth, is dismissed.
16:30Bowled by Lawson for just three.
16:34And in the ninth over, New Zealand chasing 302, absolutely on the rails at 13 for three.
16:46Bowled in.
16:48Got through him.
16:49Too good.
16:54That was a reference, I suppose, to Wednesday night from Dennis Lilley, but certainly that
16:58was a good delivery.
16:59It was too good for Jeremy Coney.
17:00He was far too late, cutting back off the scene.
17:02And what a great off-cutter from Dennis Lilley.
17:05Came back like an off-break.
17:07But Jeremy Coney all ends up in Lilley taking the points on this occasion.
17:12By a medium pace, just bowing at the stumps.
17:15It's that extra yard of pace that's made the difference today.
17:19Big shout, that's close, he's out.
17:21Yes, there was no doubt.
17:22Unpire McClendall took his time.
17:24He went back and across, and the jack back caught him from in front.
17:30New Zealand, five for 42.
17:36Bowling him round his legs.
17:38The old leg cut out.
17:40Morrison coming too far across as New Zealand collapsed to six for 44.
17:46Top shelf says it all.
17:48I don't think we should look at the comparison.
17:50Six for 45 against no wicket for 111 after 19 overs.
17:55The Australian ball is well on top of us.
17:58McClay from the member's end.
18:01He's got hold of it.
18:02It's a big one.
18:03It races out over the square leg fence.
18:05What a magnificent hit.
18:06The big man picked him up, ripped him over square leg,
18:09and the crowd rise to their feet.
18:11Lance Cairns are very popular touring player.
18:13One of the biggest hitters you will ever see.
18:18He's gone again.
18:19It's a massive hit.
18:20That's right into the members.
18:22That's 15 metres back.
18:24That's one of the biggest hits we've seen at the Melbourne cricket ground this summer.
18:28Lance Cairns picks up McClay and puts it into the members.
18:32And he's still going at it.
18:33And that's an enormous hit.
18:35In fact, I think that one's gone further than the one that he hit off Ken McClay.
18:40And the spectators at long on are now an endangered species.
18:45Because Cairns is going for them as hard as he can.
18:52McClay going back, and he won't go back far enough.
18:55It's into the stands again.
18:57Two consecutive sixes.
19:02And that one was bowled outside the leg stump.
19:05He's got hold of it and lofted it over the fine leg fence.
19:10Going some ten rows back into the crowd.
19:12And that's the fifth six.
19:14Paul Hans Cairns.
19:15This is unbelievable.
19:17Backs off again and thrashes that one.
19:20And that's clear.
19:21Graham Woods hit it mid-off.
19:22There's the sixth one.
19:24That must be an incredible bat he's got.
19:29Lance Cairns goes quickly through for a single.
19:32David Hooks has hit the stumps from square leg.
19:37And Lees is well and truly run out by a magnificent throw from David Hooks.
19:47James gives himself a bit of room and hits it straight to Steve Smith at point.
19:53A slower delivery there from Geoff Lawson.
19:59Big shout.
20:00He's out.
20:01County Craft are having a good walk.
20:03Trying to hit across the line.
20:05A big shout from Greg Chappell.
20:06As Hooks comes in from the members' end.
20:09Big shout.
20:10He's gone.
20:11That's it for Australia.
20:12They've wrapped it up.
20:12New Zealand all out for 1-5-3.
20:15Caught behind by Rodney Marsh.
20:17Hooks gets a record.
20:18But congratulations to all the Australian team.
20:20Particularly Skipper Hughes who battled early in the season.
20:23Was under a lot of pressure.
20:25What a happy man he'll be tonight.
20:27Well played, Graham Wood.
20:28A fine knock at 91.
20:31Australian Skipper going to all his players.
20:33Rodney Marsh.
20:34Lawson.
20:35It's great to see.
20:36Winning by 149 runs in the second final.
20:38And repping up the series 2-0.
20:41A very happy Australian team and Skipper.
20:44There'll be two things remembered from this match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground today.
20:48The fact that Australia won and took the Benson Hedges World Series Cup.
20:52Winning 2-0 in the finals.
20:54And Lance Cairns innings.
20:56Courtsmith bowled Lawson 52.
20:58Those bare statistics won't be remembered in years to come.
21:01But they're hitting well.
21:0252 from 25 balls faced.
21:04The Australian bowlers.
21:05They broke the back of the New Zealand innings early on.
21:07When Lawson bowled so superbly.
21:098 overs, 3 maidens, 3 for 11 in all.
21:12Lily bowled well.
21:122 for 29.
21:13And so too did Hogg.
21:14They all felt a little bit of punishment from Lance Cairns.
21:18But it was a fine performance on their part.
21:21And New Zealand were never in the hunt of getting back into the game.
21:24Once the back of the innings had been broken early on.
21:28Thank you very much indeed for being with us on Nines Wide World of Sports in the 1982-83 summer.
21:34It's been a lot of excitement for us.
21:36I speak on behalf of all the commentators.
21:38And I say what a pleasure it's been to have you let us into your living rooms.
21:42Out on your patios and wherever else you might watch our movies.
21:45Good night.
