00:00:36Ali night.
00:00:37I don't want none of you to miss it.
00:00:38Tomorrow from 9 on BBC2.
00:00:58Saturday Night Fever, tonight at 9 on BBC2.
00:01:06A must-win match for England now on BBC2.
00:01:09Highlights of the second One Day International are introduced by Tony Lewis.
00:01:13The New York Times.
00:01:22¶¶
00:02:01The second of three one-day internationals, 50 overs a side, England versus South Africa, and it's for the Texaco
00:02:07Trophy.
00:02:08South Africa won up, of course, an outstanding win at the Oval, I thought, good with a bat and excellent
00:02:14in the field, and all round very competent.
00:02:17The captains were out for the toss, it was blustery and rather rainy, but they were out on time, and
00:02:22Adam Holycook won the toss this time,
00:02:24and decided that England would field first.
00:02:27The teams, well, South Africa unchanged as predicted, but England, they bring in Brown for Maddy, Fleming for Giles,
00:02:35and Alex Stewart bats at number three.
00:02:39Quite a lot of talk out here, too, about the pitch on which they'll play. Let's go straight away to
00:02:43David Gower.
00:02:45Now, Peter Marron, the groundsman here at Lancashire, has prepared a brand new strip for this one-day international.
00:02:49It was used a couple of years ago against Pakistan. Since then, it's been relayed, and this is the first
00:02:54time it's been used since then.
00:02:56He is hopeful of it. It looks a little bit sparse. The grass isn't really covering it properly.
00:03:01A lot of cracks, which, if this was a five-day match, then people might start to get worried about
00:03:05what would happen later in the game.
00:03:06But for one day, it should certainly hold up. It's not as firm as it might be, being a new
00:03:11pitch.
00:03:11Therefore, it won't probably have as much pace as a lot of pitches here at Old Trafford.
00:03:15The players always like to have a bit of a clue what's going on, and you'll see, actually, in some
00:03:19places, little stud marks,
00:03:20where someone's put a boot across it just to see how hard it is. It's gone in pretty well. It's
00:03:24dry.
00:03:24You can see there at the surface there, it's dry enough. It's slightly dusty.
00:03:27And some of these cracks, well, it might be a little bit loose now and again, so one or two
00:03:31balls might misbehave.
00:03:32But overall, I think the pitch will do its job for this one-day game.
00:03:36In the commentary box today, David Gower with Chris Broad.
00:03:39And first, it'll be Barry Richards with Richie Benno.
00:03:42So we'll join South Africa's innings at the first ball of the third over.
00:03:46Goff boiling to Liebenberg. It's five for no wicket.
00:03:55Just enough movement off the seam there.
00:03:58Don't think that went away in the air, but it was something of a leg cutter.
00:04:04Yes, magnificent delivery. Liebenberg just feeling all the way for that.
00:04:08Really didn't get in any sort of position, and that is an excellent delivery from Darren Gough.
00:04:12You can see the seam going straight down the ball, just moving away a little bit.
00:04:20And he's picked him up again. Same way as at the oval, Darren Gough has darted the ball away from
00:04:26the left-hander Gary Kirsten.
00:04:28Chris Adams has taken the catch, this time at the first go, and a good, sharp catch of loss too.
00:04:38Brilliant bowling by Gough.
00:05:02Brilliant bowling by Gough.
00:05:03That's for one wicket, and the new batsman is Jacques Callas.
00:05:07Comes out to join Liebenberg, who's two not out.
00:05:17That's very well bowled by Lewis. It turned Callas right around in playing the defensive stroke.
00:05:31Well, it's just a question of whether or not it carried.
00:05:40Robert Croft has gone into first slip in place of Adams.
00:05:44A good piece of bowling by Gough. Didn't quite carry, but just shows you the value of having a slipper
00:05:50that's there regularly.
00:05:51Chris Adams, of course, off the field. To be fair to Robert Croft.
00:05:55He did move a little bit late, but even then, it fell just short of him.
00:06:06That was a real flail of the bat from Jacques Callas.
00:06:15Got it right off the meet as well. Short and wide, but still pretty well played in the air a
00:06:22long time.
00:06:25As you see, he's picked out the gap pretty well, and it's raced away for four.
00:06:32Ah, well bowled.
00:06:34That's a lovely spell from Darren Garfield. He's just picked up his second wicket.
00:06:39Palace has gone, caught by Stewart. That was a beautiful delivery.
00:06:44No swing so far as I could see with the naked eye, but certainly enough movement off the pitch to
00:06:49find the outside edge.
00:06:51Yes, a wonderful spell from Darren Garfield. And just enough movement.
00:06:56Callas not behind the ball, feeling for it, trying to guard it back with a point.
00:07:00And that right is in that, just that area where Callas is neither back nor forward.
00:07:04He's looking to go back, but he didn't cover the movement off the pitch, and he departs.
00:07:1024 for two. New batsman is Darryl Cullinan. Comes in at 24 for two.
00:07:16Liebenberg's at 11 not out.
00:07:31Must have been very well timed by Cullinan, because the outfield is a little slow on that side of the
00:07:37ground over on the pavilion side.
00:07:41Well, that's a very extravagant shot, but beautifully timed by Darryl Cullinan.
00:07:45That is his strength. He plays through the covers region very, very well indeed, and that's beautifully executed.
00:07:54Well, he's hit that very high and very hard.
00:07:59Did seem to sit up a bit as Chris Lewis dragged it down very short.
00:08:06Daryl Cullinan got that away a long way in front of square. It's gone over mid on.
00:08:12That's a good shot too.
00:08:15Now, the outfield's slightly slower today than we saw at the oval, but there's enough pace on that ball to
00:08:20take it across the boundary.
00:08:23Two core deliveries in succession from Chris Lewis. One too short and one offline.
00:08:34Well, that's pretty close and he's getting it.
00:08:37That's skidded through a little bit. Ray Julian has his finger pointed to the sky.
00:08:43And that's the end of Darryl Cullinan.
00:08:49So the bowling change brings immediate reward.
00:08:55Well, I was just thinking that Elam could be the bowler in these sort of conditions, and that's very straight.
00:09:02Cullinan playing across to the leg side.
00:09:05The England fielders are up, and the umpire Ray Julian delights them.
00:09:11The new batsman, the South African captain, Hansi Cronje.
00:09:22That's gone pretty fine. That's raced away for four.
00:09:26Matthew Fleming just straying too far down the leg side.
00:09:36That's a fine shot. Really has timed that well, placed it well.
00:09:41Robert Croft just getting round in the nick of time.
00:09:44They could still run for.
00:09:51And do so.
00:09:59Fine shot. That's a beautiful shot. Overpitched.
00:10:02And you may say gentle, medium pace, but still it was beautifully timed.
00:10:16This is a great shot. Slower delivery, just swinging in.
00:10:19But Hansi Cronje picked it very, very early.
00:10:23But he had Matthew Fleming going a little bit earlier.
00:10:27The faint charge, and I think that one, he really had made up his mind.
00:10:31He was going to hit it straight, and straight he did.
00:10:33He was going to hit it straight, and very powerfully struck.
00:10:40And that really drags Lievenberg forward.
00:10:48Well, signs of frustration here for Lievenberg.
00:10:52There's no need to do that at all.
00:10:54Cronje's playing well at the other end.
00:10:56He's got to be the anchor man.
00:10:57He should be just running the singles around, and giving the strike to his captain.
00:11:06Oh, he gets right under that, and wafts it away.
00:11:09It really plays that well.
00:11:12It's a shot he looks for.
00:11:14Much stronger on the onside.
00:11:22Quick call, and the arms go up.
00:11:26Direct hit, I think, would have seen off Hansi Cronje.
00:11:31They've called well and run well, but it was Cronje's call.
00:11:34He was running to the danger end.
00:11:36Lievenberg looked a little bit surprised by it all.
00:11:40Nice bounce for Nessa Hussain, and he did everything right, except hit the wicket,
00:11:44and Hansi Cronje would have been on his way.
00:11:57And the 100 comes up.
00:12:01Familiar sight of Lievenberg just working the ball to the onside again.
00:12:05Very single.
00:12:10He's gone.
00:12:12It's got him.
00:12:12Lewis has come back, and got that little bit more bounce.
00:12:15This pitch at Old Trafford, and that's an extra wicket.
00:12:19The fourth wicket is down.
00:12:22And the important wicket, Hansi Cronje.
00:12:27Played a sound, but not spectacular innings, but still looked as if he was in charge out there.
00:12:32Yes, and a very poor technique.
00:12:35Looking to run it down to third man.
00:12:37Really didn't get in any sort of position at all.
00:12:39Hit nowhere near the ball.
00:12:40Consequently, the eyes well out of line.
00:12:43Just managed to flick it to the keeper.
00:12:45So Hansi Cronje departs.
00:12:47103 for four.
00:12:50So we're one ball short of halfway.
00:12:54Completing the 25th over.
00:12:56And a good start given by Darren Goff at the top there.
00:13:00Removing Kirsten and Callis quite cheaply.
00:13:04Liebenberg and Hansi Cronje got together and took back the control for South Africa.
00:13:10Lots of good singles.
00:13:13Occasional blow for four.
00:13:14But Chris Lewis has returned.
00:13:16Removed Cronje.
00:13:17And now we have John T. Rhodes out there.
00:13:23Off the mark.
00:13:23First ball.
00:13:26Crisp little shot.
00:13:27Wide of it on.
00:13:36So a happy start for John T. Rhodes.
00:13:44Wonderful player of that particular stroke.
00:13:48Made a couple down at the oval in the first of the Texacos.
00:13:52Glorious shots.
00:13:54And there's another.
00:13:55Well Lewis has done this a couple of times in his bowling performance today.
00:13:59Just dropping the ball short.
00:14:00And John T. Rhodes needing no second invitation.
00:14:10Out.
00:14:10Over W.
00:14:12And it's not the first time.
00:14:14Liebenberg has been trying to push the ball away on the onside.
00:14:18From directly in line with the stumps.
00:14:21Mark Elam's quicker ball there.
00:14:22Appreciably quicker than he's bowled earlier in the over.
00:14:27And Liebenberg has gone.
00:14:29Well he has one LBW to his name.
00:14:32He now has a second one.
00:14:33He does ball very close to the stumps.
00:14:36Mark Elam.
00:14:37And that one.
00:14:39Well there's no doubt.
00:14:41Liebenberg's innings has come to an end.
00:14:46He found it hard going.
00:14:47It has to be said.
00:14:48It's not been easy for the batsmen.
00:14:52One thirty for five now with Liebenberg gone.
00:14:56Out for thirty nine.
00:14:57And the new batsman Sean Pollock.
00:15:05Well done.
00:15:08Nasser Hussain.
00:15:10Only in this side because of the injury to Graham Thorpe.
00:15:14Which we're told today is a disc injury.
00:15:19Nasser Hussain came back in for the match at the Oval.
00:15:23And days here at Old Trafford.
00:15:30That's nicely placed.
00:15:31Just a little bit of width there from Robert Croft.
00:15:38That will need either adjudication from the TV amp.
00:15:42Not now it won't.
00:15:49It's a good effort from Chris Lewis.
00:15:52But to no avail in the end.
00:16:00Big shot for LBW and it's out.
00:16:06Robert Croft.
00:16:07Very good line there.
00:16:08Comes in close to the stumps to deliver the ball.
00:16:11And persuades Sean Pollock to play across the line.
00:16:17Well the good thing about this spell from Robert Croft.
00:16:20Is the control that he's had of line and length.
00:16:23And this one just turning fractionally.
00:16:25Beating the defensive shot really of Sean Pollock.
00:16:29And umpire Ray Julian having no doubt.
00:16:32That that was going to go on and hit middle stump.
00:16:35The end of Sean Pollock for the second successive match.
00:16:38Robert Croft has Sean Pollock.
00:16:43One forty three for six clues as the new batsman.
00:16:46And uh he.
00:16:59Sean Pollock bowled through the gate by Robert Croft at the oval.
00:17:02And he was going about the same sort of business there.
00:17:04Got the pad in line this time.
00:17:07But basically playing across the line.
00:17:09Trying to play the straight ball.
00:17:11Through mid wicket.
00:17:22Very good over from Mark Elam.
00:17:24Just one run coming from that over.
00:17:31The difficulties for South Africa began with Darren Goff two for 22.
00:17:35Chris Lewis was lively as well.
00:17:36We saw some uneven bounce.
00:17:39Played the medium paces well enough onto the front foot.
00:17:42But uh Mark Elam's coming with two wickets for 26.
00:17:45And Robert Croft and very well indeed with a ball which was wet at first.
00:17:50But he's claimed his wicket.
00:17:52One for twenty eight of seven.
00:18:01They look for two.
00:18:02Settle for one.
00:18:03And the one fifty comes up.
00:18:07One fifty for six.
00:18:08And John T. Rhodes 34 not out.
00:18:13And he really is looking for the strike.
00:18:15John T. Rhodes.
00:18:16He's the key to a big score for South Africa.
00:18:18He's pinching a single off the fifth or sixth ball of every over.
00:18:22And his partner knows what is required.
00:18:26And he's playing his part too.
00:18:35Big shout.
00:18:38David Shepard says no.
00:18:45Very good delivery from very close to the stumps.
00:18:49And that's well worth an ask.
00:18:51Perhaps clues not just far enough forward to create the doubt in the umpire's mind.
00:19:07Two runs.
00:19:11And Mark Elam now.
00:19:12Preparing to bowl the last ball of his spell.
00:19:15He bowled extremely well at the oval too.
00:19:17His tenno was there.
00:19:18Cost him thirty eight.
00:19:20And here he's just gone for thirty three so far with two wickets.
00:19:27Good bustling.
00:19:28Well controlled medium pace.
00:19:36Just a single.
00:19:40And that's a very useful contribution indeed to England's effort.
00:19:46Two spells.
00:19:48A couple of wickets in each spell.
00:19:51And conceding just thirty four runs for his two wickets.
00:19:59Oh my God!
00:20:01That's a loud shout to W.W.
00:20:02And he's gone!
00:20:03The valuable wicket of Jonty Rhodes.
00:20:07Goes to Robert Croft.
00:20:09He's played the sweep shot a number of times.
00:20:11Very successfully.
00:20:12Though only for singles.
00:20:15And this is an important wicket because in the last ten overs which are coming up.
00:20:19Jonty Rhodes would be expected to really attack.
00:20:22Well a long way down.
00:20:24And maybe outside the line.
00:20:25I think on replay Jonty Rhodes would be very disappointed with that.
00:20:29As will the South African camp.
00:20:32Umpire Julian.
00:20:34He's decided that's going to hit the stumps.
00:20:36And Jonty Rhodes is on his way.
00:20:38Income and batsman is Mark Boucher.
00:20:48Well he appeared to lose sight of that.
00:20:53Well Boucher sort of ducked into that.
00:21:05Well what happened here?
00:21:07I think that bounced a little bit more than Boucher expected.
00:21:10It really did take off.
00:21:12And it wasn't all that short.
00:21:13I don't think it was an intended bouncer.
00:21:15I think it's just tennis balled.
00:21:18You can see how high that's got up.
00:21:20I think it certainly surprised the batsman.
00:21:22But will provide some encouragement in the dressing room for the bowlers.
00:21:25There's that very uneven bounce that is.
00:21:35Well he's lofted that over mid off.
00:21:38He's got a nine iron.
00:21:39And a pretty good one.
00:21:40One bounce.
00:21:43Over the ropes.
00:21:46Good cricket from Lance Klusner.
00:21:48The man was up there.
00:21:49The opportunity was there.
00:21:50He got underneath it.
00:21:55Well we haven't seen many confident shots today.
00:21:58It's not been that type of wicket.
00:22:00Klusner deciding that this was the one that had to go.
00:22:03And he got it fairly close to the middle of the bat.
00:22:10That's bowling.
00:22:11Nice change of pace from Darren Goff.
00:22:14Just held it back.
00:22:15The slower ball.
00:22:16Offspinner's action.
00:22:18Mark Boucher didn't pick it at all.
00:22:21He'd have known halfway through the shot that he was going to be early.
00:22:24And the ball was dead straight.
00:22:25And that's the result.
00:22:26Mark Boucher out for six.
00:22:32Well right throughout today Darren Goff has bowled well.
00:22:36He's bowled straight.
00:22:37And he's got some movement off of this Old Trafford pitch.
00:22:41And he got more movement there.
00:22:44And a dead-eyed dick straight on to Middleston.
00:22:48He's replaced by Pat Simcox.
00:22:53Who himself is a fine striker for cricket ball.
00:23:00That's a handy shot.
00:23:02No one at long leg.
00:23:04Robert Croft just can't make it.
00:23:12Well there's something of a flourish here for the South Africans in these closing overs of the innings.
00:23:20Well as David quite rightly said, it is difficult to bowl at the end of an innings.
00:23:24If you don't get it exactly right, you can go for a lot of runs.
00:23:29And on this occasion, Robert Croft's valiant effort never made it.
00:23:47The single brings up 200.
00:23:50200 for eight.
00:23:52Two balls into the 47th over.
00:23:57That's beautifully bowled.
00:24:00The bales disturbed again by Darren Goff.
00:24:05And Pat Simcox trying to do no more than just steer the ball away this time on the offside.
00:24:12Finds himself cleaned up by Darren Goff.
00:24:17He's had a good day so far, Darren Goff.
00:24:19Varied his pace in this over very nicely.
00:24:22And this one's just got past the defensive push of Pat Simcox.
00:24:30He's on his way back to the pavilion.
00:24:37Must hits.
00:24:39Misses.
00:24:48Well Alan Donald really went for a wonder there.
00:24:52Never any chance of a single.
00:24:54And Nasser Hussain, one of the better fielders in the England team.
00:24:57Just failing on this occasion to hit the stumps.
00:25:05That's a good firm shot.
00:25:08Touch of class from Alan Donald.
00:25:30Turnovers for Darren Goff.
00:25:32He's had a very good day so far.
00:25:34Four for 35.
00:25:37Wonderful bowling from him.
00:25:47Well hit.
00:25:48Very well hit indeed by Klusner.
00:25:52He's a strong man.
00:25:55And he placed it well.
00:25:56Hit it straight down the ground.
00:25:57Chris Lewis had no chance of coming across to cut it off.
00:26:02Well he's shown great restraint in this innings.
00:26:05But it just shows what a powerful man he is.
00:26:08A low full toss which is normally a difficult ball to get away.
00:26:11Klusner managed it.
00:26:16Wide full toss and that could easily go for four more.
00:26:23Klusner very much in charge here in this final over.
00:26:26And that's taken him to exactly 50 not out.
00:26:31And if South Africa managed to win this game, this will have been the vital innings.
00:26:39A terrific performance by the Burley left-hander.
00:26:45Wide this one from Fleming.
00:26:47He still managed to get a good amount of bat on it.
00:26:51Fielder didn't have to move very far to stop it but the ball was too quick for him.
00:27:01That's straight down the ground again.
00:27:03And the third successive boundary in this over.
00:27:06Very good hitting by Lance Klusner.
00:27:09Nowhere to hide for Matthew Fleming or Adam Hollyoak.
00:27:15How much they can do to reset the field.
00:27:20Well again there's not a great deal wrong with the delivery.
00:27:23Perhaps fractionally full.
00:27:27But Klusner has his eye in now.
00:27:34Now Alan Donald was looking for two.
00:27:40But the sequence of boundaries broken.
00:27:42That's some consolation.
00:27:44There we are.
00:27:450-4-4-4-1.
00:27:51And just one more ball to go.
00:27:53Alan Donald to face it.
00:27:55South Africa have done what they needed to.
00:27:57And seen the 50 overs through.
00:27:59And very effectively too.
00:28:00Klusner has really given them a useful boost in this last over.
00:28:09And full toss just chipped back over Matthew Fleming's head.
00:28:12Come back for the second.
00:28:16And although Lance Klusner takes a blow from the ricochet.
00:28:20That's a very handy last over for South Africa.
00:28:24Lance Klusner finishes 55 not out.
00:28:3115 runs came off that final over.
00:28:35And South Africa will think they have a chance.
00:28:37They finished on 226 for nine.
00:28:42Well at the top of the order there.
00:28:44South Africa fell victim to some excellent bowling from Darren Goff.
00:28:47Two wickets at the start.
00:28:48And then the partnership of 61 between Liebenberg and Cronje.
00:28:52That was good class.
00:28:53Good quality.
00:28:54And Rhodes followed on with an inventive performance.
00:28:57But I suppose Klusner was the batsman of the innings.
00:29:00He was steady at first.
00:29:01But played some wonderful shots at the end.
00:29:03Left not out at 55.
00:29:05And the score 226 for nine.
00:29:08England had their good moments.
00:29:09Especially with Goff at the beginning and end.
00:29:11Four for 35 of 10.
00:29:13And Mark Elam bowled particularly frugal away.
00:29:16Two for 34 of 10.
00:29:17And Robert Croft picked up a couple of wickets as well.
00:29:21So England now requiring 227 runs to win the match.
00:29:25At a rate of 4.54 runs per over.
00:29:31Well let's join the innings now with Klusner bowling to Brown.
00:29:35It's the first ball of the second over.
00:29:36There's one run on the board.
00:29:39Alistair Brown just gets away with it.
00:29:52Well that's exactly the kind of shot that we're expecting to see from Alistair Brown.
00:29:57He does try and get on with it almost from ball one.
00:30:00And this one just falling out the way of Hansi Cronje.
00:30:04Valiant effort to try and take the catch.
00:30:08And England pick up two runs.
00:30:11Fusen at a bowl to Nick Knight.
00:30:18A lovely stroke.
00:30:19It wasn't all that far away from the man at an orthodox square leg position.
00:30:24That's Gary Kirsten.
00:30:26And it's gone for four.
00:30:30Well Nick Knight is someone who also likes the short pitch delivery.
00:30:35And this one well.
00:30:36Fingertips just to it Gary Kirsten.
00:30:39Still didn't take any of the pace off of it.
00:30:44That's a valiant effort to claim England's first wicket.
00:30:54That's a good stroke.
00:30:56He was anticipating that one might have been up a little more in the slot.
00:31:01So it was and he smashed it away on the offside between point and cover.
00:31:09And this is the excitement of only having two fielders outside the circle in the first 15 overs.
00:31:15Batsmen can chance their arm and get away with it.
00:31:18And the scoreboard can tick along quite nicely.
00:31:21Both these batsmen Knight and Alistair Brown enjoy getting after the ball.
00:31:33He's given that something.
00:31:35Just waited on the slow one.
00:31:39And Alistair Brown was reckoning in turn that it was going to come at some point.
00:31:45Smashed it straight down the ground.
00:31:50Well Klusner can be the expensive of the two opening bowlers.
00:31:54Sean Pollock very much tighter on line and length.
00:31:57And Klusner in this over is proving just that.
00:32:11That'll be a wide.
00:32:14The batsmen have got to Klusner.
00:32:18Both in the sense of taking runs off him.
00:32:23And upsetting him.
00:32:24And upsetting him.
00:32:29Now he wants to know how many more to go.
00:32:47Well Klusner at the end of the over where he's been very harshly treated has picked up Ali Brown's wicket.
00:32:56First one goes for 30.
00:32:59It was a dynamic innings while it lasted.
00:33:03Well not really a very good shot.
00:33:05Didn't get on top of this.
00:33:07And almost guided the ball into John T. Rhodes' hands.
00:33:11Klusner is absolutely delighted.
00:33:13I think a slightly slower ball from Lance Klusner.
00:33:16Just fooled Alistair Brown into playing that shot.
00:33:27Ignite is 15.
00:33:29And the new batsman coming out now.
00:33:30Alex Stewart.
00:33:31One for 30.
00:33:32And six overs gone.
00:33:44Well done.
00:33:46That's great work.
00:33:49Good afternoon John T.
00:33:55Well his standards are slipping here.
00:33:57He didn't hit the stumps.
00:33:58But it was a marvellous bit of fielding.
00:34:01Full stretch.
00:34:02And up in a flash.
00:34:11Full stretch.
00:34:15More runs.
00:34:18Beautifully turned.
00:34:18That'll be very frustrating for Pollock.
00:34:20Who's bowled a good over apart from that.
00:34:2536 for one now.
00:34:27And seven overs gone.
00:34:39Perhaps the England team have done rid of homework on Klusner's change of pace.
00:34:44Because that's twice now.
00:34:46It's come out of his hand.
00:34:47And as it's been on its way.
00:34:49The batsman Brown first.
00:34:50And then Stewart.
00:34:52Taken a pace towards it.
00:34:53And belted it.
00:35:08Oh another good shot.
00:35:11Two beauties in this over.
00:35:13One in the air straight down the ground.
00:35:14The other one smashed away between the stumps and mid off.
00:35:22Well the change of batting position doesn't seem to have affected Alex Stewart.
00:35:26He's come out with a very positive attitude.
00:35:29And anything he can latch on to he's having a go at.
00:35:33That's another fine example.
00:35:50Just one run.
00:35:51And the 50 comes up.
00:35:55England lost just the one wicket of Ali Brown.
00:35:58For a lightning 13.
00:36:10Good shot.
00:36:12So typical of Alex Stewart.
00:36:14Striking the ball on the up.
00:36:17Sort of stroke you see.
00:36:19Bourne at the oval on good hard surfaces.
00:36:24Smacks it through the covers.
00:36:28Yes this is a wonderful shot on the up.
00:36:31That is a trademark Alex Stewart.
00:36:34Loves to play square of the wicket.
00:36:35Back and front foot.
00:36:37And you see this on the up.
00:36:38Just flick of the wrists.
00:36:47Cracking shot.
00:36:49Played purely on width I think.
00:36:53Alex Stewart taking a long stride with the front pad.
00:36:57Right to the pitch of the ball.
00:36:58And he loves to play that flailing shot.
00:37:02This is a great shot.
00:37:04You see him getting well back and across.
00:37:06Covering his stumps.
00:37:07Seeing as it's wide.
00:37:09Plenty of room to swing the arms.
00:37:11And he's done that very very successfully.
00:37:25Well.
00:37:27He imagined doing adding a test match to Alan Donald.
00:37:31I don't suppose you can.
00:37:32No reason why not.
00:37:34Because it works in one day matches.
00:37:37Down the track.
00:37:38Wafted over mid-wicket.
00:37:40Four runs.
00:37:52He's got him.
00:37:53Fine catch.
00:37:56Court voucher.
00:37:58Good wide catch.
00:38:02But that's a fine effort by Nick Knight.
00:38:07No one can blame him for really giving it a crash.
00:38:11And this is a great delivery.
00:38:13Nick Knight did everything right.
00:38:15But it just moved off the track.
00:38:16And that's what Alan Donald was looking for.
00:38:19He didn't relish being charged.
00:38:21And he's come back in true fast bowler's fashion.
00:38:24And he is really fired up.
00:38:26He's trying to fire the South Africans up.
00:38:29They needed a wicket very very badly.
00:38:31And Donald has got one for them.
00:38:33And Knight departs for 34.
00:38:3577 foot 2.
00:38:38The incoming batsman is Nasser Husser.
00:38:42So let's have the comparison after 15 overs.
00:38:45South Africa 56 for 3.
00:38:47And look to be in some trouble.
00:38:49And England 77 for 2.
00:38:51Good run advantage.
00:38:53And they require 150 more runs to win.
00:38:56Thank you so much.
00:39:03Flying edge.
00:39:06Great stop.
00:39:08That's Pollock.
00:39:20And with 2 to go away off the seam.
00:39:22I reckon there should be a slip there.
00:39:24Alex Stewart's gone hard at that one.
00:39:25It's come off the thickest edge.
00:39:27And Sean Pollock has done extremely well here.
00:39:43Beautifully bold.
00:39:44And super catch.
00:39:47Boucher behind the stumps again.
00:39:50That was really dying on him.
00:39:53Perfect line just outside off stump.
00:39:54And Nasser Hussain has fended and fenced away at those.
00:39:57He's looked likely to get the nick.
00:39:59He got it that time.
00:40:02And an excellent catch.
00:40:05And Donald is really fired up.
00:40:08You'll see this one just go away off the seam.
00:40:11And faintest of faint nicks.
00:40:13And Boucher has done well.
00:40:15Going forward.
00:40:16Got the gloves underneath it.
00:40:22So Nasser Hussain goes to that catch behind the wickets off the bowling of Donald for one.
00:40:28He just faced eight balls.
00:40:32Donald has taken two wickets and three overs now.
00:40:36New batsman.
00:40:38Chris Adams.
00:40:47Plenty of pace from Alan Donald.
00:40:49Just a slightly loose shot again.
00:40:51From Chris Adams.
00:40:59Well this was a fast leg break.
00:41:03There's not much that Chris Adams can do there.
00:41:15That's gone.
00:41:16That's the end of Chris Adams.
00:41:21Pat Simcox has kept the pressure on.
00:41:25He's given him absolutely nothing to hit.
00:41:28And forcing him to play across the line.
00:41:30That's brought the wicket.
00:41:31Without a shadow of doubt.
00:41:41Well straight enough for umpire A Julian.
00:41:44Chris Adams shaking his head.
00:41:46But he took 14 balls over that three.
00:41:49And that's not a typical Chris Adams innings.
00:41:53England's captain now has a job to do.
00:41:56Adam Hollyoak on his way out to the crease.
00:41:58England are 90 for four.
00:42:03And there's been another little middle order hiccup here today.
00:42:06Hussein gone for one.
00:42:08Maybe unluckily.
00:42:10Adams LBW to Pat Simcox for three.
00:42:14England still needing 137 more runs.
00:42:18The rate will start to climb a bit now.
00:42:19Come on boys.
00:42:20Come on boys.
00:42:20Come on boys.
00:42:30Come on boys.
00:42:30Come on boys.
00:42:30Nice to push through the onside.
00:42:31That brings the 100 up.
00:42:33For England.
00:42:51Oh that's beautifully struck.
00:42:55That's carried a long way over.
00:42:57Oh has it.
00:43:05Well it was very firmly struck by Adam Hollyoak.
00:43:11And that's very inconclusive from the replay.
00:43:16We might just have to get back to good old fashioned umpiring.
00:43:19And give a decision.
00:43:26Well Pat Simcox prepared to enter into the spirit of things and er.
00:43:34Well four runs it is.
00:43:36Much to the displeasure of the crowd.
00:43:38One would hope that England don't lose the game by two runs.
00:43:51That's going to be four.
00:43:54Slightly misdirected by Lance Klusner.
00:43:59And anything fine in one day cricket is an instant four runs.
00:44:06Well very much a gamble this by Hansi Cronje.
00:44:09Here bringing on Klusner who was expensive in his first spell.
00:44:12And he still hasn't quite got the direction right.
00:44:18That's a good shot.
00:44:22Four runs.
00:44:24Both umpires in entire agreement this time.
00:44:31Well very quickly onto this Adam Hollyoak.
00:44:34Short of a length.
00:44:35And pulled beautifully over square leg.
00:44:37One bounce and into the crown.
00:44:44Just what the England supporters and the England team needed.
00:44:49So half way through this England innings.
00:44:52There are 115 for four.
00:44:55Chasing 227 for victory.
00:44:57Ahead of the game it seems.
00:44:59Compared to South Africa at the same stage.
00:45:15That's a good performance.
00:45:20He turned the ball quite a bit.
00:45:22Got occasional bit of lift.
00:45:24And he had his top spinner working well.
00:45:4350 for Alex Stewart.
00:45:45Good innings.
00:45:46Good innings.
00:45:5070 balls.
00:45:51And, 20-yan to three times.
00:45:51That's the same route that Orymca is.
00:46:02Nicely picked up.
00:46:05Feet in the man out at deep square.
00:46:07That's a very good shot.
00:46:08nothing really wrong with the ball
00:46:14the favorite area for Adam Hollyo really likes to play in that mid-wicket area
00:46:20and did that particularly well pick it up on the half volley
00:46:26so no 52 these two put on
00:46:42that is out and that is a very nasty moment for England it wasn't a good
00:46:50call it's gone straight to the right hand of a splendid fieldsman and Alex
00:46:57Stewart has had to go up I could hardly believe that the call came
00:47:05well they had every opportunity
00:47:10he is well out not even in the frame Alex Stewart so a wonderful knock comes to an end
00:47:15in tragic circumstances but very silly cricket
00:47:20Alex Stewart departs for 52 and that man Jonte Rhodes has struck for South Africa again
00:47:30new batsman Mark Gillum coming out to join Adam Hollyoak who's on 34 it's 1.43 for 5
00:47:36and that run out brilliant piece of work by Jonte Rhodes just a question of whether or not Mark Boucher
00:47:44had the ball when the bails were taken off and then it got through to his midriff now there
00:47:57it's very difficult to tell because eventually it finishes in his midriff you can see the ball there
00:48:03tucked into the folds of his sweater
00:48:12that's going to beat David wicket it's 20 yards to his left
00:48:15poor delivery from Darryl Cullinan just too short
00:48:21inviting the hits and that's a real bonus for Mark Elam in England
00:48:26well Cullinan has bowled really well in this part-time spell
00:48:31but on that occasion he dropped the ball too short and Mark Elam was on to it very quickly
00:48:40that's very handy indeed
00:48:42four runs off the first ball of the over
00:48:46it matters not that that was an inside edge
00:48:48it matters not that Adam Hollyoak had no control over the shot
00:48:52the four runs very welcome indeed
00:48:57well not the sort of start you want as a bowler
00:49:00but the luck obviously on England's side on that particular occasion
00:49:14that's got him
00:49:16well David Chepard didn't hesitate
00:49:19Adam Hollyoak had shuffled across his stumps a bit
00:49:23looking to work that ball onto the leg side
00:49:28and so the England captain goes four short of his 50
00:49:32well I'm not sure Hollyoak can believe this
00:49:34he's looking back at the screen
00:49:35but I don't think he'll like what he sees
00:49:38because he has gone well across his crease
00:49:42and very much in line with the stumps
00:49:45and David Chepard believing that that was going to go on and hit the leg stump
00:49:57Matthew Fleming is the man on his way out
00:49:59now he is a very handy character to have in this sort of situation
00:50:04169 for six
00:50:10and England still needing to score at 5.27
00:50:14that asking rate has come down just a tad
00:50:24that's gone and has bowled him
00:50:25well completely deceived by the lack of pace
00:50:29Mark Elam had sized up that position at David Wickett again
00:50:33but he was through the shot
00:50:36and a very innocuous delivery from
00:50:39Daryl Cullinan has taken
00:50:42the seventh wicket
00:50:45not what England wanted
00:50:47losing a wicket so soon after losing their captain
00:50:51Fleming and Lewis
00:50:54both new to the crease
00:51:03well that was rushed through
00:51:04took Chris Lewis by surprise
00:51:08coming back for the second
00:51:09he's very quick down the pitch Chris Lewis
00:51:18that's nicely placed
00:51:23Matthew Fleming off the mark with two
00:51:32well
00:51:32the comparison suggests that it's a pretty even thing
00:51:36England after 40 171 for seven
00:51:40South Africa were 167
00:51:42also for seven
00:51:49that's gone in the air
00:51:54lovely catch
00:51:56beautifully judged
00:52:02Cullis was moving around there
00:52:03but never once took his eye off the ball
00:52:05he kept perfectly balanced
00:52:09the last throw forward
00:52:10got both hands to it
00:52:12super catch
00:52:14well Fleming doing exactly the right thing
00:52:16England do need boundaries
00:52:18they need to get on with it
00:52:19and he had to
00:52:20try and this is a terrific catch
00:52:26so we're down now
00:52:28to the incoming batsman Robert Croft
00:52:39that's a fine shot
00:52:41that's a fine shot
00:52:41crashed away
00:52:46beautiful stroke from Robert Croft
00:52:54188 for eight
00:52:5645 overs gone now
00:53:08Croft will have to hurry
00:53:11and really that must be close
00:53:12he was very slow out of the blocks
00:53:15well let's have a look
00:53:16this was the throw
00:53:18Croft on the charge
00:53:23that looks out to me
00:53:30this is Darren Goff
00:53:31the last man to come in for England
00:53:32a rise to a great cheer
00:53:34great expectations
00:53:35but 1.90 for 9
00:53:56two runs to Darren Goff
00:53:58who's off the mark
00:54:02good thing about Darren Goff
00:54:04is he always
00:54:06personifies
00:54:06optimism
00:54:14in the air
00:54:15caught him
00:54:16it's all over
00:54:18John D. Rhodes the catcher
00:54:20Alan Donald the bowler
00:54:22a well-known formula
00:54:23that
00:54:26and South Africa
00:54:27won by the big margin
00:54:28of 20 balls to spare
00:54:35and 32 runs
00:54:43that's a victory
00:54:44well fought for
00:54:45they were not always
00:54:46favoured strikes of the game
00:54:48but they had a strong contribution
00:54:49too I think from England
00:54:50but it's the strength of their
00:54:54opposition
00:54:54the composure in the field
00:54:56and a flexibility today
00:54:57of Hansi Cronje
00:54:59the South African captain
00:55:02well England made a very bright charge
00:55:04at the start in the first 50 Novas
00:55:06but then Donald and Simcox
00:55:07fast bowling
00:55:08and offspin
00:55:09really posed some problems
00:55:10and removed Knight
00:55:11Hussein
00:55:12and Adams
00:55:12but then Alex Stewart's
00:55:14sparkling 50 of 70 balls
00:55:16England welling with a chance
00:55:17before the vital run out
00:55:18by John D. Rhodes
00:55:20in the end disappointment
00:55:21194 all out
00:55:24excellent bowling by South Africa
00:55:25they really rang the changes
00:55:26Donald of course
00:55:28as you'd expect
00:55:283 for 32
00:55:29off 8
00:55:30and 4 balls
00:55:31and Simcox
00:55:321 for 34
00:55:33off his 10
00:55:34Cullinan
00:55:34he was a surprise man
00:55:36he enjoyed it
00:55:362 for 30
00:55:37off 9
00:55:38Pollock was tidy
00:55:39and Klusner
00:55:40the most expensive
00:55:42the man of the match
00:55:43the award by Mike Proctor
00:55:44was to Lance Klusner
00:55:46and the final result
00:55:49South Africa win by 32 runs
00:55:51and therefore they take
00:55:52the Texaco trophy
00:55:532-0
00:55:55afterwards David Gower
00:55:56was up on the balcony
00:55:57to speak to the two captains
00:56:00Hansi congratulations
00:56:01the Texaco trophy is yours
00:56:02it looked like it could have been
00:56:03a tough game today
00:56:04at one stage
00:56:05yeah they really
00:56:06came out there today
00:56:07like a football
00:56:08seemed very charged up
00:56:09and we knew we were in
00:56:09for a fight right
00:56:10from the very first over
00:56:11and once again
00:56:12Darren Goff bowled
00:56:13exceptionally well
00:56:13we thought that he was
00:56:14the pick of the bowlers
00:56:15throughout the last
00:56:16two or three
00:56:17two days
00:56:18so he's really bowled well
00:56:20and put us under
00:56:20a lot of pressure
00:56:21and we really were up
00:56:22against it after losing
00:56:23three early wickets
00:56:24and trying to establish
00:56:25a little bit of a partnership
00:56:26and then at 200
00:56:27we thought it wasn't enough
00:56:28but then they put on
00:56:29some useful runs
00:56:30towards the end
00:56:30pretty happy with 226
00:56:32on a wicket
00:56:32that we thought was going to be
00:56:33a little bit more up and down
00:56:34than what it turned out to be
00:56:35yeah Lance Klusner
00:56:36of course provided those runs
00:56:38at the end
00:56:38and you do have this strength
00:56:39of batting in depth
00:56:40yeah I think both sides
00:56:42do have that
00:56:43it's just a case of
00:56:44under pressure
00:56:45you know
00:56:45people respond differently
00:56:48and Lance is the sort of bloke
00:56:49that responded very very well to
00:56:51and also you have the bowlers
00:56:53to take advantage
00:56:54of tight situations
00:56:55when you're defending a target
00:56:56yeah I thought
00:56:57in our innings
00:56:58Alan Donalds
00:56:59picked up three vital wickets
00:57:00for us
00:57:01and really worked hard
00:57:01worked up a good
00:57:03put a pace there
00:57:04and took two important wickets
00:57:05up front
00:57:06and one at the end
00:57:06so it's important for us
00:57:08that he bowls well
00:57:09and gets some wickets
00:57:09not only that
00:57:10but you seem to read the pitch well
00:57:12Simcox bowled well first
00:57:13then the master stroke
00:57:14Darryl Cullinan
00:57:15comes on
00:57:16bowls some overs
00:57:16and does exactly the right job
00:57:18yeah I think
00:57:19a lot of people
00:57:20were surprised
00:57:20that we were happy
00:57:21to bat first
00:57:22I always
00:57:23wanted the impression
00:57:24I was going to
00:57:25keep a little bit low
00:57:26get hard to score
00:57:27and turn a little bit
00:57:28towards the end
00:57:29maybe I'm
00:57:29I was just reading it wrong
00:57:31but
00:57:31you know
00:57:32when I brought Darryl on
00:57:33it was almost
00:57:34take your money
00:57:34and put it on 36
00:57:35and see what happens
00:57:36you know
00:57:36it came off very very well
00:57:38he has done it before
00:57:39for us
00:57:39and he felt a little
00:57:40confident doing it
00:57:41so you know
00:57:42today was our day
00:57:43we're just a little bit lucky
00:57:43well it seems you know
00:57:44you meant
00:57:45anyway congratulations
00:57:46enjoy tomorrow now
00:57:47in the comfort
00:57:47that you've won
00:57:48the trophy
00:57:49Adam
00:57:49tomorrow's going to be
00:57:50a sort of consolation day
00:57:51at best for you
00:57:52that's right
00:57:53yeah
00:57:53you know
00:57:53we've lost the series
00:57:55I think South Africa's
00:57:56played all around
00:57:56better cricket than us
00:57:57and we're going to Leeds
00:58:00just to stay
00:58:01and well
00:58:02try and get some pride back
00:58:04it seems that
00:58:05watching our performances
00:58:06these last couple of days
00:58:07in one day cricket
00:58:08we've been nearly there
00:58:09but just one or two things
00:58:10have gone wrong
00:58:10especially it seems
00:58:11the judging of a run
00:58:13it's in one day cricket
00:58:14it's so important of course
00:58:15not to pick the wrong fielder yet
00:58:16John G. Rhodes
00:58:17we all know about
00:58:18and he's played a vital part
00:58:19for them
00:58:19with run outs
00:58:20and near run outs
00:58:21all the way through
00:58:22these first two days
00:58:22that's right
00:58:23I mean
00:58:24all due credit to Hans
00:58:25you know
00:58:26he puts them in the positions
00:58:28where the ball goes most often
00:58:29and you know
00:58:30it's not so much
00:58:32the fact that he's such a good fielder
00:58:34well it is exactly that fact
00:58:35you know he's such a good fielder
00:58:36so there's always a bit of stuttering
00:58:37going on when the ball goes to him
00:58:39he puts you under pressure
00:58:41and you know
00:58:42when you're sitting back
00:58:43watching it from afar
00:58:43you think
00:58:44well why don't they just not run
00:58:45but you know
00:58:46sometimes you think
00:58:46there's a run there
00:58:47and the guy's so quick
00:58:48that he's gone before you know it
00:58:50you're absolutely right
00:58:51because we do sit back and watch
00:58:53and there'll be millions
00:58:53watching on television
00:58:54saying
00:58:54surely they're not running
00:58:55to Johnty again
00:58:56well yeah
00:58:57I mean
00:58:57you know
00:58:58the one where I ran Alec out
00:58:59you know
00:59:00I hit it
00:59:00and as soon as I hit it
00:59:01I just thought
00:59:01well there's usually one there
00:59:03but the guy's so fast
00:59:04you know
00:59:05getting off the mark
00:59:06to full speed
00:59:07and then getting rid of the ball
00:59:09you know
00:59:09as soon as Alec's halfway down
00:59:11the wicket
00:59:11I see he's struggling
00:59:12and I thought
00:59:12no I've picked the wrong guy there
00:59:14so what about tomorrow now
00:59:15any potential changes
00:59:16or any different strategies
00:59:18for tomorrow
00:59:19I think we've just got to
00:59:20you know
00:59:20wait and see what the wicket is
00:59:21you know
00:59:22we want to win the game
00:59:22you know
00:59:23we're not going to go there
00:59:23and just give people a game
00:59:24we want to try and salvage some pride
00:59:27and give the public something
00:59:28to shout about
00:59:29well we hope you see it
00:59:31thanks very much
00:59:31cheers
00:59:33well I think England's bowlers
00:59:34did well enough
00:59:35but there was a strong element
00:59:36of self-destruction
00:59:37among the batsmen
00:59:38yet again
00:59:38which proves
00:59:39that England for the moment
00:59:40have lost the habit
00:59:41of winning these one day
00:59:42cricket matches
00:59:43maybe they won't tomorrow
00:59:44the third match is at
00:59:45Headingley
00:59:45we'll be there to bring you
00:59:47the highlights
00:59:47but for the moment
00:59:48from Old Trafford
00:59:49it's goodbye
01:00:11we'll be there to be a bit
01:00:11so
