00:00winning the toss and batting there was nothing greatly wrong with the pitch it looked a poor
00:04pitch but it was okay he played okay south africa just batted badly and this was the start here
00:11didn't really use his feet he found he was playing away from his body a long way away
00:17no real good feet movement he gets stuck in the crease pokes away from his body inside edge onto
00:24the stumps and that was the sort of bad look that went with south africa or you could say bad
00:30facing against philip defratus a wide one which bounced yeah you could say it was a touch and
00:37lucky but i'd say it was a good ball from philip defratus it caught him in two minds he was
00:41trying
00:41to get forward and maybe looking to sort of angle it on the offside but it bounced on him forced
00:47him
00:47back and i'd like to give quite a bit of credit to the bowler i think it was good bowling
00:52probably
00:53not the best of shots but it caught the batsman in two minds cursed him then well he fell to
00:58what
00:58turned out in the end to be a rather good catch by philip defratus yes it was a bit of
01:03a sucker
01:03shot though short ball went to pull it we've all done it but he hit it up in the air
01:08went straight
01:08up to philip defratus the only difficulty he had was the sun in his eyes he's a bit worried about
01:14the judgment in the end he caught it in a very awkward position but he's such a good athlete a
01:20wonderful fielder for a bowler the man who opens the bowler is such a good athlete but it's hit in
01:26the air for a long time and if it hadn't been for the sun in his eyes he would have
01:30caught it in his
01:30pocket but the sun in his eyes made him juggle a bit with it and he was a bit of
01:36a bit relieved in the
01:37end to have caught it but as i say you see looking at the sun there he's top class catcher
01:42he is
01:44johnty rhodes in next he was going
01:52looking into the sun even though he had a cap on and he has taken it very well the ball
02:00may not
02:03have been one of the greatest you'll ever see and he just had a long way to go for it
02:09then he had to look into the sun try to keep his eyes away from it it almost got him
02:30it just shows the tremendous value of the brumbrella that is a covering system that goes right across
02:39the whole ground oh that looked a very good shout as dominic cork does well wicket to wicket gets in
02:47very close to the stumps at the delivery end
02:59short and that's pulled away to mid wicket
03:04extremely fluent stroke no hesitation absolutely positive
03:11yes he might have been slightly lucky to survive the shout earlier in the over but once he's got
03:15through it daryl cullinan very positive in his approach
03:22captain of england for the tour of australia next winter
03:27oh that must be close
03:31because forderson doesn't think so
03:39now that's good bowling as we've emphasized wicket to wicket gets in close
03:44baby take a look at this
03:47very close
03:48no two ways about it it's uh
03:52seem to be missing too much there
03:58well played quite deliberate
04:01beautifully played fine on the offside no slips there
04:05four runs
04:07a little rare occasion when dominic cork
04:10gave the bats for a little bit of width and the 100 comes up
04:23so
04:24gone
04:24gone
04:26graham thorpe is the catcher
04:28straight mid wicket and dominic cork truly deserved a wicket
04:33he's had three very good shots for lbw
04:37and john d rhodes whips that one away to mid wicket but
04:41graham thorpe was in the way
04:43yes it's a well set leg side feel there isn't that much of a gap
04:47in that area mid wicket but john d rhodes found him right in his midriff
04:50straight at him
04:52made the mistake of not keeping the ball on the ground or
04:55not deciding to go well over the top
04:58a new man now hansi cronier
05:00who hasn't been in top form
05:07big shout and up go england
05:11down stays
05:13finger of chris balderston the umpire
05:18and here's jeffrey boycott
05:21well chris balderston didn't really have any doubt at all he was walking away as soon as the feel was
05:26made he was ready to hand the cap to the bowler
05:31i didn't think it hit anything it's quite clear seemed to go under the bat
05:42he's gone for a big hit he's found it
05:49well i think that's right i think they have to play some sort of shot whether it's a full-blooded
05:54uh over-the-top shot like this for four
06:08good shot
06:10can you flick
06:15one man's got a wealth of confidence
06:25almost a tennis ball bounce
06:28look at the height it went past the batsman and then how it got through the roads
06:42well away
06:49that is a very powerful player when uh he's in good form
06:59well he needed to make proper contact because philip de freitas is right on the boundary out at long
07:03on and he went straight over the top of him
07:14he's beaten sean newdow
07:17it was a terrific stage
07:20with enormous power
07:25it's only a relatively short boundary down to the pavilion
07:29straight and hansi cronier probably wanted to give himself a little bit more room
07:33he possibly could all the men are up on the offside he would have felt safer
07:37getting it over long off over mid off
07:49lovely stroke
07:57and uh daryl cullinan takes a fresh guard as if to say well
08:03i got that one wrong
08:05in fact he played it perfectly beautiful placing right to the covers
08:18it was a change of pace but i think hansi cronier himself contributed to that uh dismissal
08:26looking to stand back stand aside use the pace of the ball and
08:30probably whack it to the covers
08:35ended up fishing gently around opstum
08:40one year making room and the ball never arrived
08:49one year out now for 36 cullinan on the other end 45
08:53so they've set themselves a little bit for an onslaught for eight overs
08:57now richardson the incoming batsman has to start again
09:04five wickets down 174
09:17well there's a load shot there never looked anything like lbw
09:26coming and gets hit on the front pad quite a lot it tends to go at the ball
09:30as opposed to an imaginary area alongside it
09:36as long as he gets a decent stride in he's safe
09:43well it's falling one veil falls off
09:47it squeaks through between bat and i guess boot
09:54finds the officer it was all
09:57well on the tip of the log at innings played late in a limited over match
10:06everything was perfect till he missed it
10:16richard snell the man coming in is quite an innovative player
10:31and
10:32what a catch
10:35caught by golf that was brilliant
10:38and lewis gets another one in south africa now dying in the hole that makes him 182 for seven but
10:44that really was a brilliant catch
10:50super catch super bowling another slower ball from
10:55lewis there it comes out of the back of the hand snell checking the shot instead of going right through
10:59with it
11:00and goff has to do the rest and does he do it well
11:04wonderful catch one goff will want to keep
11:11very athletic piece of fielding and shows a good pair of hands and also
11:17often if a fielder takes one of those they can pop out when he crashes to the ground he hits
11:23it with quite a bump
11:37good shot
11:41this is his natural game because he's got a good selection of attacking strokes
11:48a bit of boundary as you've seen
12:00cork
12:10dickey's acknowledged
12:18and he's got a limb
12:22he goes into position
12:23plonk thank you
12:29slower one picked it well
12:34brings the 200 up
12:40but over is running out 53rd
13:07all sorts then
13:12run-of-the-mill stuff for the close of the helter-skelter one day innings
13:19well it was nice feeling by graham thought because he kind of had much of a look at the stump
13:22there you
13:23are just one and a tiny bit of the stump to look at
13:28if your bird not in any trouble giving the decision the bassman was in
13:32just a little unlucky as it went for extra overthrows but that's a i think that was a risk worth
13:37taking
13:47that's the end of that and what a good final over two runs from it from dominant
13:51cork and he got past the bats on three occasions
13:55good bit of bowling
13:58the final score of 2-1-5 for seven just have a look at the final ball of the innings
14:02actually did a little bit from around the wicket
14:05but that was useful bowling and there michael atherton
14:09he'll be happy with that
14:11at innings of improving stands the best of them coming from darrell cullinan and hansi cronier
14:17partnership of 71 but there was a lot of miss hitting among the tail enders and i'm afraid they
14:22paid the penalty for a rather weak start at the front 215 for seven as for the england bowling
14:28it was tight and it was varied wickets for defratus and for lewis three apiece
14:34shaw noodle i thought really held it together after an expensive start and after 11 overs conceded
14:40only 34 runs an excellent bowling too by dominic cork and darren goff the run rate required england
14:49require 216 to win at 3.92 runs per over let's join the innings now in the third over score
14:56is three for no wicket
14:57and the video is bold to stewart
15:05nice spread from alec stewart
15:16south africans should have learned by now don't bowl at alex stewart's legs
15:23nice and easy a good timer of the ball not to miss out
15:40just the faintest lean into the stroke there
15:56it's beautiful time even better placed this man way down the boundary to villiers
16:04it's making absolutely no impression on it
16:09two straight again from matthews
16:12atherton had no problem flicking that away only just behind square
16:26nicely steered
16:30heroic effort to stop it
16:36but just watch the the blade of the bat open that was deliberately played there by alex stewart
16:42and some welcome runs coming for england england find it a little bit harder than many thought to
16:48collect the runs
16:57super short wasn't it well on top of it turned the wrist just steered it wide of mid on
17:06quick feeling to play the shot knowing that you don't have to run
17:23unorthodox extremely damaging
17:30they did well here mike allerton to find the spotlight that had a drag it
17:35square of the man who is out at deep wide mid wicket
17:45well there's a clatter of stumps shout of appeals greatly of excitement
17:53nil result
17:56alex stewart starting to get a little impatient
17:59and they managed to get that back foot in in time
18:10very well played
18:14beautiful flick of the wrist and the latest of cuts fine for forums
18:22well he's been practicing in that area all the way through
18:26and eventually just a little bit of extra pace a little bit of gentle timing on that that all helped
18:37score
18:52oh
18:53oh well now is that out or isn't it out it is it turned and gone
18:59alex stewart really a fully shot
19:0519th over first wicket stewart goes for 32
19:10tim shawes deserve that apparently de villiers at long off
19:16it should be hitting it not to the onside but inside out over extra cover
19:22if it just holds stops on him turns a little bit
19:26any of those it's going to spoon up in the air like it did there
19:31a lot of well thought out shot no because you've had the warning the previous over when one had
19:36or a couple of overs ago when one turned
19:41assume everything's going to come straight on nicely judged
19:44that brings in graham hick
19:57oh really you've got to get something there
20:05well i think the reason he missed that that he slid too early he got himself down into a slide
20:11what he'd no real need to he could have got that stood up with two hands
20:15and he paid the penalties so any youngsters watching don't go for the clever or ambitious
20:22stand on your feet and stop it
20:29hit across the line but he got it
20:38well that's really disheartening for the bowler tim shawes ball beautifully he just tried to blow
20:44a little floated slower ball a little bit more spin throw it up and he threw it too far it
20:49was a juicy full toss
20:53he just experimented a bit nothing wrong with that but africa were doing well that
20:57they got the first part of the equation right bowling tight keeping the runs down
21:02now they need a couple of wiki
21:07suddenly adderton sprinting away
21:18that's a super shot
21:23tried to see nothing better all day
21:29yeah it is a super shot i've been advocating graham hick hitting with the spin using his feet
21:34inside out but just remember he's got to the ninth over at tim shaw before anybody's hit him
21:41in the proper area
21:48well that was a slog really nothing grooved about it brought the 100 up it's come in the 30th over
22:11it's great again from matthews he may well throw
22:16his head back because that was clipped off pretty close to middle
22:25absolutely majestic
22:28i think that's the difference with hick in the second half of this summer
22:32it's only medium pace course it is
22:36but when he gets anything like that he's now treating it exactly as he does in county cricket
22:42it's got him again
22:47more this time
22:5612 so far from the over
22:58and not finished yet
23:02almost
23:03exactly the same stroke as earlier
23:05except this time he lifted it over the boundary
23:08didn't roll the wrist
23:09every intention to hit the ball for 6
23:13new over
23:14from Fanny de Villiers
23:15Atherton on 49, new commentator
23:18Richie Benno
23:23infielded
23:23and someone's gone here
23:25he stays on 49
23:29reminiscent of the fall
23:30at Lourdes
23:32against the Australians
23:34Atherton goes
23:41well it looked quite a miss up
23:43running between the wickets but
23:46you've got to give such a lot of credit
23:47to the fielder
23:48the dive in
23:49the quickness
23:50look how he gets up so quick
23:51and then as Richie Benno said
23:52he actually realised
23:54which end he had to throw to
23:55and he did it all
23:56so quickly
24:11he's at it again
24:14a judging act to stop the ball
24:16and put that extra awareness of where Graham Thorpe was at the other end
24:22just watch this
24:24as Jonty Rhodes seemed to hang in the air for a long time to knock that ball up
24:28he always gets himself in a good position to throw and throw with pace
24:38and that's Graham Hicks
24:40half century
24:43good solid performance
24:46his 10th one day century
24:48full of good strokes
24:52and yet at the same time
24:53he's been extremely watchful
24:54three fours
24:55one six
24:57one forty eight
24:58for two
25:04oh
25:04I'll try to hedge
25:05thank you very much
25:08four runs
25:18could be out
25:19temperature
25:20oh
25:22should have got it
25:30he's a very very good fielder
25:32I don't think he'd be happy with the result there
25:43oh
25:44brilliantly done
25:46I would suspect that is going to be
25:50a difficulty for Mr Thorpe
25:53ran his back in beautifully did Graham Thorpe
25:55kept it down
25:56run it ahead of him
25:59as Richie Benno mentioned
26:00he was always going to be tight
26:01because it went straight to the fielder quite firmly
26:04the fielder threw it quickly underarm
26:06off balance
26:07and he's out
26:08I don't think there's much doubt about that
26:12well without the third umpire
26:15Graham Thorpe may well have got away with that
26:17because usually
26:19this is so close
26:22the umpire's not sure
26:23they usually give the benefit of doubt
26:25to the batsman
26:36I don't say it was
26:40totally intended
26:41but he does play that
26:43little guiding shot away down there
26:45to third man
26:46plays it very well
26:51I have to say
26:52with shots like that
26:54this match has been all one way
26:56so they have to get a four-tard
26:58they never had enough runs
27:01they certainly haven't got
27:03the wickets that they wanted
27:04to create any sort of pressure
27:11walking down the wicket
27:14DMA dismissive stuff
27:17almost like a benefit match
27:20oh he's a lovely player
27:22Neil Fairbrother
27:27the Yorkshireman I have to say that
27:28even though he plays for Lancashire
27:30but he's a wonderfully gifted improviser
27:33I always feel that
27:34he never quite knows
27:36what he's going to do
27:37I don't think he knows
27:39until the last second
27:40he always seems to me
27:41as if he's got two or three shots
27:42in his locker
27:43he could play to
27:45nearly every ball
27:46and he decides at the last minute
27:48which one he's going to play
27:49which shot
27:50into which area
27:58gets better and better
28:04he's a grooved push
28:06over the top
28:07that's all
28:07well it's his shot
28:09I was saying earlier
28:10when he was playing
28:11the slow left arm spinner
28:12Tim Shaw
28:13that he hits over
28:16mid off
28:17extra cover
28:18brilliantly
28:22that might be it
28:23or is it out
28:24Shaw's underneath it
28:25and he's caught him
28:26he's caught him
28:28and Hick goes
28:28the score's level
28:29Hick goes
28:30caught by Shaw
28:31off the bowling of Snell
28:33for 81
28:34it's been a super innings
28:42so fourth wicket down
28:44for England
28:45Tim Shaw
28:46he's not had a great day
28:47in the field
28:49made no mistake
28:50with that one
28:53Rhodes has come in
28:55but the batsman crossed
28:56so fair brother
28:59nine balls
29:00to organise
29:00one run
29:12there it is
29:13through
29:14England win by
29:16six wickets
29:17with six balls
29:19to spare
29:19never in doubt
29:21my favourite one day
29:22backman
29:23Neil Fairbrother
29:24crisply through the covers
29:28good victory
29:29South Africa
29:30never really in the match
29:31to be fair to England
29:32they control it
29:34they've been in charge
29:36the most professional innings
29:42by England
29:43built on strong partnerships
29:44up front
29:45and of course
29:46the silver thread
29:47of an innings
29:48by Graham Hick
29:49of 81
29:49took his time
29:50at the start
29:50but showed real
29:52flourish in style
29:53towards the end
29:53and well supported
29:54by the left handers
29:55Thorpe and Fairbrother
29:57219 for four
29:59well poor South Africa
30:00not enough runs
30:01to bowl at
30:02you must say that
30:02in defence of the bowlers
30:03but what heroic efforts
30:05were made
30:05by Fanny de Villiers
30:06conceding only 27 runs
30:08and the left arm spinner
30:10Tim Shaw
30:1011 overs
30:111 for 34
30:14England won the match
30:15by six wickets
30:16with just six balls
30:17to spare
30:19Mike Atherton
30:20the England captain
30:21received the cheque
30:22for £6,000
30:23which went to the winning side
30:25and the man of the match
30:27was Graham Hick
30:28chosen by his own
30:30county's president
30:31Tom Graveney
30:33Mike Atherton of course
30:34confirmed
30:35as captain
30:36for the winter tour
30:37to Australia
30:38and I met him afterwards
30:39and asked him
30:40if he was just looking
30:41forward to the job
30:42absolutely
30:43I think
30:44I mean it's an honour
30:45to catch a new country
30:46at any time
30:47but to take the side
30:48to Australia
30:48with a chance
30:49of bringing back the ashes
30:50has got to be
30:51the dream
30:51Are you glad or relieved
30:53to see the end of the season?
30:56Relieved I think
30:57to end it in one piece
30:58and in pocket
