00:00Hello, welcome to the highlights of this vital Benson Hedges World Series Cup clash
00:03between Australia and England at the Adelaide Oval, the middle of the triple header
00:07at the Adelaide Oval over this Australia Day weekend, and a vital one
00:11particularly for England after they went down yesterday to New Zealand in that
00:15very high scoring and thrilling match. The points table shows that Australia
00:19and New Zealand each have eight points, England have six, but England have played
00:23one more match than the other two teams. Here's Tony Gregg out in the centre now
00:27with his pitch and conditions report. Yesterday the bowlers in the field
00:31has had a lot of trouble with the heat out here, and today it is hotter, so it's going to
00:35be interesting to see
00:35how they handle the conditions. The batsmen, on the other hand, had no troubles at all, largely
00:39because the pitch that was made for the match, that's yesterday's match and today's match
00:43is a very, very good one. You can see there it's very white, just a few
00:47cracks in it, some patches of grass, but a really fantastic pitch
00:51for batting. Having a close look at it, you'll notice that it is pretty firm
00:56but on a few occasions yesterday, the ball didn't quite carry through to the keeper
00:59and we might find today that it's just a little bit slower
01:02and on occasions, of course, we'll see the ball bouncing in front of the keeper.
01:06That's good for batsmen and I suspect there are going to be a lot of runs scored out here again
01:10today
01:10and that's good for the one-day game. Having a look at the moisture content,
01:13well, that's bang on 62. Bang on 62, which means that the moisture
01:18is way down on this pitch and so it's obviously a very good one for one-day cricket.
01:23Once again, let's have a look at our weather wall and once again, there's no point in dwelling on
01:27the wind direction and wind speed because there's no direction and no speed
01:30but the air temperature is climbing pretty rapidly. It's got itself up to just above 30
01:35and that's higher than it was yesterday, very warm in the middle.
01:38Humidity, that's almost average on 30 as well, 30% humidity
01:42but coming down to the player's comfort or direct heat level, that's on 40 already.
01:47Now, that is really pretty uncomfortable in the middle
01:49so it's going to be tough for the fieldsmen and the barometer is, as it was yesterday, steady 1,022.
01:56Pretty tough conditions out here for fieldsmen and bowlers alike.
01:59The batsmen, I think, have to dominate the day.
02:02Thanks, Tony. Well, it looks as though the pitch is going to be an absolute beauty again today
02:05but it will be fairly warm out there for the two captains,
02:08Bob Willis and Kim Hughes and Ian Chappell, who interviews them now.
02:12News to toss the coin.
02:15Tails.
02:18Regular thing now.
02:20Piece of cake, isn't it?
02:21We have a bat.
02:24Bob, Richie Beno's still up there shaking his head and saying unbelievable.
02:27How are you going?
02:29Well, nightmare's over.
02:31New day today.
02:32Bit hotter, so...
02:33What do you reckon is a safe score on this wicket?
02:36About 330.
02:38That's pretty good, isn't it?
02:40Magnificent wicket.
02:40Yeah, I mean, we fielded badly, dropped some vital catches and didn't bowl very good lines.
02:47Kiwis kept going, full credit to them.
02:49We've got to pull finger out today and get back into it.
02:52Yeah, last chance, isn't it?
02:53Good luck.
02:54It is, really.
02:54Yeah.
02:55Kim, how does Hooksy go?
02:56You make it?
02:57Yeah, he'll be all right.
02:58Ian, a bit of a scare yesterday but he's come up all right.
03:01All right, and what's the combination you're going in with?
03:04Jeff Lawson comes in for John Maguire, so that's the only change.
03:07All right, what about the tail end of your batting?
03:10You're not getting much from there.
03:11Is it a bit of a worry?
03:12Well, really, the batting should be done by the first six.
03:15Rod's in reasonably good form.
03:16Lawson coming back in on the side gives us certainly a little bit more depth down there.
03:20Only leaves Dennis, Hoggy and two up and heaven knows what they're going to do,
03:25but it's short boundaries, pretty square here, so, you know, but hopefully they won't be needed.
03:29All right, get cracking and I think you both need about 300.
03:32Well, there we are, Bob Willis of England winning the toss once again.
03:35He's making a habit of it and he's decided to bat first and, Richie, how many do they need?
03:41Well, they need plenty, Ian, and nice line, Bob Willis, and good luck with the finger.
03:46We pick up play now in the second over of the morning.
03:49Just four runs on the board.
03:50Dennis Lilley is the bowler and he's bowling to Ian Botham.
03:53Your commentators are Tony Gregg and with him is Fred Truman.
03:58Well, he's hit that high and way down towards the short boundary from the leg side.
04:03It bounces into the crowd and so both them off the mark with a big hit to leg.
04:15Well, he's hit that like a rocket.
04:18Well, there's sure he's a man there for the catch.
04:20Kepler vessels nearly got decapitated.
04:26Lilley.
04:27He drops the ball.
04:29As he was about to let that one go, it dropped out of his hand.
04:33A big cheer from the crowd.
04:39Dennis Lilley with the ball right at the end of his fingers, I would guess.
04:44And he did just as he was going to start.
04:49In fact, he possibly caught the umpire.
04:54But he's trying to get close to those stones.
04:56Just look how close he's at.
04:57Let's go!
04:58He's got him.
04:59Well, it was a very sharp chance.
05:02Botham absolutely threw the blade at that ball and
05:05it was a thick his edge and went flying to Hooks' right hand.
05:09He managed to get a hand to it.
05:10But it was just a glancing blow and Sir Botham has collected two.
05:16The ball's swinging away.
05:18Ian Botham going for the big one.
05:20And Hooks just managing to get a couple of fingers to it.
05:25The ball's gone wider off the seam.
05:30Awesome.
05:34Once again, Botham smashes that through the gap.
05:38Well, that is as good a cover drive as you'd ever see.
05:41It went all the way along the ground and it went so hard.
05:46Bench, 27.
05:49He's played in all the matches for England this year.
05:52Bench's World Series Cup.
05:53Scored 182 runs.
05:55Top score of 65.
05:56That was his score yesterday out here against New Zealand.
06:01And a batting average of 26.
06:03It's been promoted in the batting order.
06:05To open in these matches.
06:07To try to get England off to a slightly quicker start.
06:10And certainly working for them today and did yesterday.
06:13Ibole!
06:14That's a beautiful delivery by York Lawson.
06:17Right up in the block hole.
06:19That's the best way to answer.
06:21The sort of cover drive that Berth and Blade of Emily two draws earlier.
06:26Right through his defences there with a McLevison deal.
06:30They're both out.
06:33York Lawson.
06:35And Lawson playing all round it and a bit across it.
06:38And that's the first wicket down for England.
06:40The score is 25 for the loss of Wilmington.
06:44Clear skies.
06:48It's Dennis Lilley.
06:49Tavere.
06:52Tavere.
06:54Close.
06:55That's Mel Johnson.
06:56Lilley on his knees.
06:58It's the overbold.
07:00One for 44.
07:03Letting hog on line to David Gower.
07:07Trying to shot the leg glance.
07:09Racing away towards the boundary.
07:11David Gower.
07:12Waiting for that ball to come to him.
07:14Hit the face.
07:15Turned the wrists.
07:16Raced away for four.
07:18He's making a change.
07:20It's going to be Jeff Thompson.
07:21He'll replace Dennis Lilley after six overs.
07:25Safe again.
07:26That's the second chance to go down.
07:28And I think we'll have a little look at that again to see if it carried.
07:34If it didn't, then certainly the one chance has gone down this morning.
07:37Very tentative.
07:39Chris Tavere playing at the angle ball.
07:41Rodney Marsh diving across.
07:44As did David Hooks at first slip.
07:46It certainly went in between them.
07:48The big thing that we've got to look at is to see whether it would have carried to Rodney Marsh.
07:53I doubt whether it would have carried to David Hooks.
07:55Rodney Marsh doing the right thing.
07:57Diving across.
07:59Trying to pick it up before it got to Hooks.
08:01Good healthy edge.
08:02But then it really died.
08:04Hooks, I think at the end, may have just got a finger to it.
08:08It certainly was very low by the time it got to him.
08:11Now, Captain Kim Hughes must have two men in catching positions.
08:15And he's got two slips.
08:18David Hooks at first slip.
08:20And Kepler Vessels is across over there in which would be only a third slip.
08:25The reason for that is that the Australians think that when Chris Tavere does get a nick,
08:32it goes a little bit wide.
08:44Rodney Hogg has broken through.
08:46Second wicket.
08:48Tavere has gone for 8 in, 2 for 62.
08:53And a sea of flags break out around the Adalto.
08:59On both occasions today, the Australians hitting the stumps.
09:02Good delivery from Rodney Hogg.
09:04The angle bringing it in through the gap of Chris Tavere.
09:07He played across it slightly.
09:08He was looking to hit it down to mid on.
09:09Very good ball from Rodney Hogg.
09:12And that's the second wicket for Australia.
09:14Tavere out-bowled Hogg for 18.
09:16And England, 2 for 62.
09:212 for 62 now.
09:24Gower is 15.
09:32The shots there for the run-out.
09:35But Lamb looked to be doing it quite comfortably.
09:38But I think the big thing here, Richie, is to have a look at the bat.
09:41And go and land and put it in rather than slide it in.
09:44Very close.
09:45This is going to be...
09:47You see the bat just beating the throw of Greek Chapel.
09:52Yes, another wicket here would be particularly interesting from an Australian viewpoint.
10:02Well, that's well bowled.
10:04Beautifully bowled by Rodney Hogg.
10:06And this is a key little session for Australia.
10:11Hogg, two wickets.
10:12He's bowled very straight and very direct in his approach.
10:18Great effort from Rodney Hogg.
10:19He's been tying Alan Lamb down.
10:22And looking to work it away just for a single.
10:25And once again, that little stump going, keep ruling out of the ground.
10:28That's a great breakthrough for Australia.
10:31Exit Alan Lamb for two.
10:32And England now, 3 for 70 after in 90 overs.
10:38Rodney Hogg has gone off.
10:40And Greg Chapel taking his place at the river end.
10:49David Gow going over the top.
10:53King Hughes has quite a chase.
10:55The ball may not just make the boundary, but the batsman should get safely through for four.
11:01Greg Randall coming back.
11:05So there's a four all run.
11:11The lead to Gower.
11:12That's short.
11:12He smashed it away into the gap again.
11:16And a good effort down there.
11:18The diving attempt to save that one by Kepner Vessels.
11:22He's got a hand on it, but it was too well placed by Gower.
11:26And look at Gower now.
11:27He's bending over his bat.
11:28He's not feeling at all well, I don't think.
11:29He's feeling very, very tired.
11:31He's very hot.
11:34And so is Randall.
11:35He's breathing deeply.
11:37It's a hard day for batsmen and bowlers out there.
11:41A bit of imagination now being shown by Australian skipper Kim Hughes.
11:46Because he's bringing David Hooks on to bowl.
12:00That's played a way down towards deepening the wicket.
12:03So 13 runs coming off that over from David Hooks.
12:06That's a little bit expensive.
12:08It's three for one, five, seven.
12:11Time strike.
12:12Thompson, the bowler.
12:14Could be up.
12:15Yes.
12:17Does it?
12:18A bit bad job, Dennis Lee, for the fast volley.
12:20Come forward then and took the catch diving.
12:22And a vital wicket.
12:23Gower out for 77.
12:24Thank you, sir.
12:26And David Gower.
12:27Just a little bit of fatigue setting in towards the end of this innings.
12:30Jeff Thompson.
12:31That angle going across Gower.
12:33Forced him onto the back foot.
12:34And a good catch by the big fast bowler.
12:36Dennis Lee lunging forward.
12:37Just getting it before it got to the ground.
12:39David Gower waited to see if Lillie acknowledged that he had caught it.
12:44Once he had seen that, he was on his way.
12:46But the end of it, once again, a very good innings coming to an end, I think, Bill,
12:50because of a little bit of fatigue setting in.
12:51So Gower out for 77.
12:53England four for 176.
13:00Jeff Wasson.
13:03Vandal on 47.
13:05Well, Rob Gowley gets inside.
13:06He's racing away towards the fine-league boundary.
13:0843, 48, 49.
13:13Justy not coming back.
13:14He's going to get run out.
13:15Trevor Justy.
13:16Oh, wow.
13:17Went off to England.
13:19Rodney Marsh furling the ball at the stumps.
13:21Randall dropped the bat.
13:22Trevor Justy went to sleep.
13:24Man on 47 walking for his third run.
13:26Randall was off as he should have been.
13:29Justy's call didn't respond.
13:31He was gone for all money.
13:33You wouldn't have seen that cricket in park cricket, Bill.
13:36Randall setting off, slipped.
13:37Rodney Marsh throwing at the stumps.
13:40He also lost his footing, but, gee, it was bad cricket from Trevor Justy up the other end.
13:44He turned.
13:44Randall turned also.
13:46Looked up.
13:47Justy was on his way.
13:48You see Justy looking at the ball.
13:50And then suddenly Randall sees that he's not coming down and tries to get back.
13:55Gee, the man on 49.
13:57You would have thought that he'd have sneaked through for that extra single.
14:00Rodney Marsh had a bit of time there to dive at the stumps as well.
14:06And he's gone.
14:08Would you believe it?
14:09That cricket for Trevor Justy.
14:11Caught and bowled.
14:12Gets him up, taking the run that was there.
14:15Randall driving a slow day.
14:16He'll be straight back to Walson.
14:17He's out for 49.
14:19What a great over from Jeff Walson.
14:21He really worked hard for that rickets.
14:23Feat Derek Randall on nearly every delivery in the over.
14:26And then just enticing him into a drive.
14:28It wasn't quite pitched up.
14:30And Walson making his feelings well known.
14:33Telling him where to go.
14:34And that's where he goes to the pavilion.
14:36But a very good innings by Derek Randall.
14:38Out caught and bowled Walson for 49.
14:39And now England slumping a little.
14:415 for 178.
14:47Leader keeper in good.
14:49Joins Triple Justy.
14:51England 5 for 178.
14:57Off the helmet.
14:58Reflection off the helmet.
14:59Court helmet.
15:03By Marsh.
15:04Good decision by Earl Johnson.
15:05Never any doubt about that.
15:07Australians went up.
15:10There's the change in the field.
15:12This is taking time.
15:13Certainly not a lot of urgency, Bill,
15:14about the Australians getting into field positions.
15:18Take their time.
15:1912 overs to bowl.
15:21Just about 36, 37 minutes.
15:26Got it.
15:27No.
15:28Was it a bump ball or was it a catch?
15:29Whatever it was, Walson didn't catch it.
15:32I'd say that was a return catch.
15:33He made good ground, Jeff Walson.
15:36I guess it was a desperate Jeff Walson, Bill.
15:39Just having a look.
15:39Looks as though it may have been spooned back.
15:41He was keen to wrap the hands around it.
15:44Just searching for it.
15:45Where it went afterwards, he didn't know.
15:47And yes, it was a catch.
15:49On the half volley.
15:50Just spooned back.
15:51But a great effort by the big fast bowler.
15:53Getting around.
15:54And that would have been another good wicket for Australia.
15:56They need wickets at this stage.
15:57They're going to be struggling to get through their over rates.
16:00Yes, just holding up there, that end.
16:02That's twice we saw Randall driving on the up and a little bit of change of pace.
16:07But England, looking at 250 if they bet sensibly.
16:10188 for five.
16:1430 not over is bold.
16:15They're in good shape.
16:18Listen to Gould.
16:21Well done.
16:23Pinecats.
16:24Second one he's taken today.
16:27Good athlete effort.
16:29From Dennis Lilly.
16:30Going across from wide mid-on.
16:32Almost to behind Jeff Walson to get rid of Ian Goode.
16:37He's been liking the old fella yet.
16:40Took a good catch earlier on.
16:41And this is an even better one.
16:43Moving away to his right.
16:44And still when he crashed to the ground, able to hang on to the ball.
16:48So Lilly catching Gould.
16:50And England are now six for 200.
16:56Fog to Marks.
17:05I've seen just about everything now.
17:07Rodney Hogg is not at all pleased with the batsman kicking the ball away there from the
17:14charge he was making down for the run-out.
17:23And he would have been run-out again.
17:27Big marks there.
17:28Doing the right thing in protecting his stumps.
17:31And booting that ball away.
17:33I think that Jesty would have been safe from a Rodney Hogg attempt at a run-out.
17:39Trevor Jesty faces Jeff Lawson.
17:46And Lawson did very well to get back to the stumps there.
17:49He followed through.
17:52Came around very, very quickly.
17:56Good cricket there from Kepler Vassels.
17:58Very quickly in on that one.
18:01I saw that Marks was interested in a single.
18:03And also good cricket from Lawson to get back to the stumps.
18:08Well, he's taken a couple of good catches.
18:10Did some good work from him in the field.
18:16From Lawson straight.
18:21Jesty started to give himself a little bit of room.
18:23And eventually getting the ball on the full toss.
18:28Wasn't a bad delivery from Lawson.
18:30He was trying to spear the Yorker in when he saw Jesty coming.
18:34But he just over-calculated a little.
18:37So you can put that down to a good piece of batting by Trevor Jesty.
18:41Good piece of footwork.
18:43Rodney Hogg to Trevor Jesty.
18:49Nice shout there.
18:50Give and not out.
18:52Lampire Mel Johnson.
18:54Flakematic as usual.
18:59That one's off the thigh pad.
19:02Well taken by Rodney Marsh.
19:07Catch.
19:10Rodney Marsh more interested in getting up to those stumps
19:13to make sure that Vic Marks wasn't coming through for a single.
19:181.30 is the scheduled finishing time for the first innings.
19:21And there's 50 overs maximum per side.
19:28So it'll be three overs the Australians will fail to bowl.
19:40Australia will lose $600 in fines for the first over.
19:46They haven't bowl.
19:47That's the 50th.
19:48And $1,200 for the 49th.
19:50And $1,200 for the 48th.
19:52So if they win the match,
19:53they'll lose their $3,000 prize money.
19:57If they lose the match,
19:58they'll lose their $1,500 losing fee.
20:04So I'm not sure that that's enough really.
20:07I think they should be made to bowl the 50 overs.
20:09In which case,
20:11they'll have a very short lunch time.
20:14That's the problem with the fielding side.
20:24Two ball to marks.
20:28I think the reason they should be made to bowl the 50 overs
20:31is because the disadvantage is going to be for England
20:34if they don't bowl the 50.
20:38Certainly going to work in favour of Australia.
20:46So maybe that's something
20:47that the administrators will have to look at.
20:54Geoff Thompson rolling to marks.
20:59In the air.
21:01It's going to be safe.
21:02Dennis Lilly is after it.
21:09Good running there.
21:10The ball only went three parts of the way to the boundary,
21:13but they picked up three runs.
21:15Nine from this last over to date.
21:21Failing a no ball or a wide.
21:24This will be the last ball.
21:29Six for 224.
21:33Four in 47 overs.
21:47It's in the air.
21:49They're beautifully placed.
21:51Four runs from the full toss.
21:54Burbank came from that last over from Geoff Thompson.
21:57Good trigger for the marks.
21:59And Justy, six for 228.
22:04So Australia need 229 to win from 47 overs.
22:10It shouldn't be all that difficult an effort for the Australians.
22:13They need 4.87 and over.
22:15And to keep England down to that figure in 47 overs,
22:18two of the bowlers, Lawson and Hogg,
22:21I thought turned in their best one-day performances
22:23for quite some time.
22:24I thought Hogg was quite superb today in the heat.
22:26He bowled very accurately and no one was able to take any liberties with him at all.
22:314.87 then for the Australians.
22:33And at the 47 over mark,
22:36England's innings finished.
22:37And the Australians very much liable to a fine
22:40for not getting through their 50 overs.
22:42We pick up play now in the second over of the Australian innings.
22:45Two runs on the board and Jackman is the bowler.
22:47He's coming into bowl to Alan Borda, the left-hander.
22:49And in the commentary box, it's Ian Chappell.
22:51With him is Fred Treven.
22:56Short, and that's where Borda likes them.
22:59Borda off the mark of the boundary.
23:03Well, here we go again.
23:06We can't bow short to Alan Borda.
23:09Lassen on...
23:124.
23:13Borda on 5.
23:19Chris Treven, you've got this.
23:23A good effort there by Chris Treven.
23:26I don't think it was a catch.
23:27He hit this ball into the ground and it bounced to him.
23:33Chris Treven getting across well for that.
23:37Certainly a bump ball.
23:39Chris Treven saving a certain boundary.
23:43Robin Jackman has hardly been seen on this tour
23:46and when he came in and said he'd got three wickets
23:48and won the Man of the Match Award.
23:52That one really grubbing along the ground.
23:54Gives both on the chance for a throw.
23:57And here's overthrows.
23:59Alan Lamb not able to block that throw.
24:03I think the club will just be quite happy to see that one run into the fence
24:06so that the batsmen don't run five overthrows.
24:13It's quite obvious there that the man that would like to get out is Alan Borda.
24:18Of course, Ian Baltham picked this up blind.
24:21The ball not bound to pick this up blind and just threw.
24:25Alan Lamb got behind the ball
24:27but he forgot to get the whole of his body behind
24:30and it shot in between his feet for four overthrows.
24:33It was a bit unfortunate that both for England, Ian Baltham, Alan Lamb
24:39and especially the bowler.
24:44Borda 15 facing Bob Willis.
24:53That's a good shot by Alan Borda.
24:55He's beat the...
24:57It's sitting mid-off position under the ball, passed him for four.
25:08Oh, he's got him.
25:09What a great catch.
25:10Beautifully caught there.
25:11Randall taking that catch in his one hand.
25:14I think this is his right hand.
25:15And Borda for a second and couldn't believe it.
25:17That's a big wicket to us, to England.
25:19Bob Willis there.
25:20Getting him to play the cut square of the wicket
25:23and a beautiful catch by Derek Randall.
25:25Unlucky Alan Borda picking Derek Randall out.
25:28One of the few men on that field who could have taken that catch.
25:31And here is England's answer to Bruce Yardley.
25:35The kangaroo.
25:37Derek Randall leaping with joy
25:40as he catches that very difficult chance.
25:43One for 27.
25:47David Hooks, the new batsman, is on strike.
25:50His opponent will be Robin Jackman
25:52who's bowling from the northern end.
25:55And both England bowlers have bowled very well, very economically.
26:02Oh, nice shot.
26:04One ball out there to David Hooks.
26:07Albeit that he hasn't got off the mark yet.
26:10The first opportunity he gets,
26:11he hits it straight through the gap of cover for four.
26:17Oh, there's a big appeal there for LBW.
26:19That must have been pretty adjacent.
26:22Wumpire Mel Johnson not moved.
26:24Perhaps it pitched just outside, leg stump.
26:26Jackman looks very disappointed.
26:29He is certainly a wholehearted appeal.
26:31Let's have a look at this again as that ball pitches in line.
26:34Yes, that's fine.
26:35It hits Hooks on the flap of the pad.
26:39And it was more or less in line with middle leg stump.
26:41But perhaps it was getting a little bit high.
26:44Yes, perhaps it was.
26:45It certainly hit the roll.
26:46It pitched seemingly to me in line.
26:49And let's have a look at the height here.
26:51Up it comes.
26:53Well, I suppose he got the benefit of the doubt.
26:57He follows that with a good shot.
27:00He'll just outside off stump again and Hooks collects a single.
27:05So, um, let's have a look at the overall ampoule strike rate for the bowlers.
27:09Carl Rackerman leading in that race.
27:10He's not the most economical of bowlers, but he's taking the wickets most frequently.
27:17Well played.
27:19That was flicked away very nicely by David Hooks.
27:22The ball pitch just outside, leg stump, and Hooks flicking it away down to fine leg.
27:27It's being pulled back there, and they've got themselves four.
27:36That's the sort of shot I'm talking about, and it's way over the boundary.
27:40So Hooks has got it, and that's it.
27:45Well, that's precisely what I was talking about,
27:47and I said that David Hooks was such a dangerous player on the Adelaide Oval.
27:51With that short boundary over there at mid-wicket,
27:53he can take a ball such as this from Ian Botham
27:56and just dismiss it from his presence
27:58with all the ease in the world.
28:01He hardly seemed to hit that,
28:03but it soared over the boundary like a bird.
28:06Jackman is being persevered with at the northern end.
28:13Good shot.
28:15And regrettably, or unfortunately, for the Australians,
28:18that ball went thundering into the stumps down the other end.
28:22This is an important bowling change.
28:24A lot depends on the way Botham bowls here.
28:28Hooks will be looking to get after him,
28:29and it's important from England's point of view
28:32that Botham is tidy.
28:35It's a good shot.
28:39And it's four.
28:40You just can't afford to drop short to
28:43David Hooks and the Adelaide Oval.
28:45Tremendous eye, tremendous timing.
28:48Place to play.
28:51And it's Eddie Emmings to continue.
28:55Dyson's going for the big one again.
28:56Is he going to be caught?
28:58I think he's got it.
28:59He's got it.
29:00It's Alan Lahm, and he's out.
29:01John Dyson.
29:03What a good catch.
29:05Running in and taking that very low to his right.
29:10What a beautiful catch that was.
29:12He made a lot of ground.
29:15John Dyson has been tied down.
29:17He goes for the big one.
29:19And there's Alan Lahm.
29:21He's taken a beautiful running catch.
29:24And that is Australia's second wicket down.
29:27They're now two for 89.
29:30Kim Hughes, the new batsman.
29:34Vic Marks is far very well again today.
29:40He's gone.
29:41Kim Hughes.
29:42Lifting Vic Marks to David Gow.
29:44It's a good catch.
29:45But Hughes was never quite to the pitch of that.
29:47And Australia now,
29:49I sense a touch of panic there.
29:52That they've got themselves into the situation where the pressure is on.
29:57It's a marvellous catch by David Gow.
29:59I must admit to myself, I thought it had gone over the top of him.
30:03That's the end of Kim Hughes.
30:04It's three for 97.
30:08David Hooks requiring a one for his half century.
30:1449.
30:15Greg Chappell, four.
30:16Australia, three for 102.
30:19Off 30 overs.
30:19And you can see that they've slipped just over 30 runs behind England at a comparative stage.
30:27There's Hooks, 50.
30:36And characteristically,
30:37Hooks goes to his half century with a drawaway square cut.
30:41He's played that shot time and time again, as it is.
30:44Often my heart has come into my mouth to see Hooks play that stroke,
30:48because the arm ball, the ball that comes on,
30:51could really restrict him.
30:53It could come in and not turn,
30:56and really cramp him to prevent his play in that square cut.
31:00He has been bold in the past by the arm ball.
31:03However, his 50s come up.
31:05Off 73 balls in 84 minutes.
31:07A very good knock from David Hooks.
31:13Hooks going over cover.
31:15Good shot.
31:17Two bounces.
31:18Crashes into the fence.
31:19Ten runs coming from that over.
31:21At Australia, three for 112.
31:27I must admit, there is a need for urgency, Ian,
31:29because Australia have fallen steadily behind the required run rate,
31:34to such an extent they now require 7.31 runs per over to win.
31:41Hooks again advances.
31:43And that's a great shot.
31:46For one second there, the man in the covers, Vic Marks,
31:49I think, thought he had a chance of catching that one.
31:52Fits straight over the top of his head and liked to pull it into the cover boundary.
31:58Chappell will be facing Marks.
32:06And here's trouble, if Gould can hit the wicket, but he can't.
32:10Hesitation between Chappell and Hooks.
32:15And Gould, his only option was to have a shy at the stumps.
32:18There was no one there.
32:21And that was a really costly best.
32:23With Chappell trying to give the strike to Hughes, two hooks,
32:26and Gould advancing.
32:29With Bothan coming back into the attack,
32:31he's not being the most economical of England's bowlers.
32:35Probably the reason why you're smiling, Keith.
32:38Really got to try and push along here, Tony.
32:40Got wickets up the sleeve.
32:44And you go down, you might as well go down fighting.
32:46But I think Strowby's still a fair bet here.
32:49Short boundaries, both sides of the wickets.
32:56He's got a great start for Bothan, this new spell.
33:00Short ball there to one of the best players of the full shot in the world.
33:04Simply dispatching to the gap at square leg for four.
33:07Bob Wills has been trying to hide Ian Bothan.
33:10Yesterday, eight overs, he went for 61 runs.
33:13And David Hooks, quick to get onto that back foot.
33:16Wasn't all that short, but Ian Bothan.
33:19Not a lot of pace in his bowling these days.
33:22Tremendous innings from David Hooks.
33:25He's moved on to 71.
33:28Certainly played a lot of aggressive shots.
33:30Seven boundaries, one six.
33:32But certainly a lot of good placement.
33:35Singles, twos, very intelligent innings.
33:40He's made a field change and put a man in that gap now.
33:43So deep mid-off is open and that's exactly where Hooks has hit it.
33:48There's one thing that is for sure in this game of cricket.
33:50You can't put fielders in places where bad balls are hit.
33:54That's what Bothan did.
33:56Hooks responds waiting straight down the ground.
33:59Not a lot of intelligence in the bowling you'll be in Bothan these days.
34:04As Jackman moves in now.
34:06Two hooks.
34:07And that's played square leg.
34:08And that's the man down the square.
34:09And he's got him.
34:10He's got him.
34:14And the catch taken by the man on the deep square leg boundary who's Trevor Jesty.
34:20It was a well-judged catch that by Trevor Jesty out there.
34:24He was looking into the dark background.
34:25The grandstand was the other side of the ground.
34:28The full toss.
34:29What a way to get out for David Hooks.
34:30Such a tremendous inning.
34:32He's getting the full toss.
34:33He put it out to his favorite area.
34:35Not away from Trevor Jesty.
34:37A very good catch and a great breakthrough for England.
34:40And just the wicket and the man they wanted to get rid of.
34:43And this game is really alive now with Australia.
34:45Four for 149.
34:49Three for 149.
34:51Rod Marsh.
34:52Now at the crease.
34:56It's hit straight down the ground.
34:58It's a beautiful shot by Marsh.
34:59It will carry, I should think.
35:01It's riding the way down towards the boundary just underneath the side screen.
35:04Bob Willis comes steaming down.
35:06And he picks it up.
35:07Marsh turns to the fourth.
35:10It's pretty clear that Rodney Marsh is not going to waste too much time in settling down
35:16there.
35:16He's been sent in.
35:17It's where that big bat of his around a bit.
35:20It was a good blow.
35:21Straight.
35:22Straight down the ground.
35:24You see some Rodney Marsh so often play across the ball and try to hit it out towards mid-wicket.
35:29Square leg.
35:30Often seems to lead to his downfall.
35:32But when he plays straight, he usually makes pretty healthy contact.
35:39All problems out there for Ian Botham.
35:42Nice just drawing away.
35:44A few quick, deep breaths.
35:52And just short of the man in it mid-wicket.
35:55Spotham shies at the stumps.
35:57It's all happening out there.
35:59Chapel was out of his ground.
36:02Two opportunities for England.
36:06And the catch just dropping short.
36:07And then the run-out attempt missing the stumps.
36:13And he's gone.
36:14What a catch.
36:15Taken there at mid-wicket.
36:16Marsh hitting the ball in the air.
36:18And that's a big breakthrough for England.
36:21And a very good catch.
36:23It went very quickly to mid-wicket.
36:26And Ian Botham getting the breakthrough.
36:29Rodney Marsh looking for the big hit.
36:32Put Botham away earlier in the over.
36:35Being on the front foot.
36:36And a brilliant catch.
36:38Diving catch by mid-wicket.
36:41Robin Jackman.
36:45Which is how Robin Jackman has hurt his hand too, Tony.
36:48Which might be a bit of a blow for England.
36:50So the end of Rodney Marsh's short innings.
36:52He's out for seven.
36:53And Australia struggling at five for 161.
36:58Just on my calculation, Tony.
37:00I think for Australia to win this.
37:02And even innings of around about 70.
37:05From Greg Chapel.
37:06He's at present 28.
37:09Oh, that's a beautiful shot.
37:10Right into the gap.
37:12A deep extra cover.
37:12Two bounces into the boundary.
37:15Oh, a few shots like that are going to make a big difference to Australia's chances here.
37:20Five for 167 they are.
37:26It's in the air.
37:27And it's going down the ground towards mid-on.
37:28Goer coming in.
37:29He dives.
37:30And did he get it?
37:30He did.
37:31What a great catch by David Goer.
37:34Well, Chapel trying to chip that one away to mid-wicket.
37:37David Goer certainly made some ground there.
37:39They dived and caught the ball in front of him.
37:41Not easy to do that.
37:44And Australia's chances slump.
37:45I don't want to sound like a no-all, Tony.
37:47But we just nominated the problem for Greg Chapel was if he tried to do it in the air.
37:53He tried to hit it high down the ground.
37:55But what a great catch from David Goer.
37:57Richie Beno said before he's had a lot of classic catches this year.
38:01And that one then, certainly a very important one.
38:03Very difficult to dive forward for the catch.
38:06And an elated David Goer.
38:08Robin Jackman once again getting that breakthrough for England.
38:12And Greg Chapel back to the pavilion for 33.
38:15And now Australia's six for 167.
38:20To Lawson.
38:22It's well hit.
38:23It's a big hit.
38:25Six runs.
38:26And we're in both of them.
38:28The game's a man for England.
38:29Surprising as it may seem.
38:31Not going with a good line or a good length.
38:34Lawson.
38:34A big hitter.
38:35Picked it up and whipped it over square length for six.
38:37A crowd rise to their feet.
38:40Vessels, the last of the remaining recognised batsmen.
38:45He's got it.
38:46Both of them gets through as he tries to rip that through mid-wicket.
38:50Rejected.
38:50Kipmer Vessels' weaves.
38:51And possibly so does Australia's hope for this match.
38:54Yes, I think that is it.
38:56The last remaining batsmen of quality in the Australian side.
39:00The rest of tail enders.
39:01And once again, it is that position round about middle of the leg stump.
39:05And both of them has bowled Kipmer Vessels in very, very clever fashion.
39:10Six for 100.
39:11Seven for 100 and 89.
39:15Last ball of the innings.
39:16Australia require 19.
39:18And victory for England.
39:21Tomorrow, Australia versus New Zealand.
39:23And all points will be even.
39:26Swing by Thompson on its four.
39:28But a great victory for England.
39:30Well-deserved one.
39:31Defend of 228.
39:33And they win easily in the final analysis.
39:35Well done, Bob Willis.
39:36Tremendous performance by him and his team.
39:38Both of them there slapping on the back and rightly so.
39:41And I'm afraid the slowness at the top put tremendous pressure on the rest of the Australian batsmen there.
39:46Johnny Dyson took 60 balls to make those 17.
39:49And by the time the second wicket fell, that was Dyson.
39:5126 overs had gone.
39:53David Hook, 76, played extremely well for Australia.
39:56And Greg Chappell made 33 from 36 deliveries faced.
39:59And Lawson hit 28 from 24 balls.
40:02But the English bowlers had them contained pretty well throughout the innings.
40:06The spinners did a great job keeping the Australian batsmen down to four and over.
40:09Hemmings and Marks, a fine effort that.
40:11And Willis and Jackman, I thought, bowled very well indeed.
40:15Jackman in particular again today kept the batsmen tied down with accurate bowling and movement off the seam.
40:21So, a victory by 14 runs for England.
40:24And the presentation now of the two captains and Tony Greg.
40:28Thank you, Richie.
40:28Well, once again, I have $5,000 made available by the Australian board out of their Benson Hedges fund.
40:34And $3,000 goes to Bob Willis.
40:36What a tremendous fight back after yesterday.
40:38Thanks, Tony.
40:40If we'd played a third as well yesterday in the field as we did today, we'd have won easily.
40:46But it shows you what a strange game it is.
40:48Up one minute.
40:49Did you have more in bed at 10 o'clock and give them a good rollicking last night?
40:52Or did they get the message without you having to say a word?
40:55I think they had a bit of a roasting last night.
40:57But we kept faith with the same side because they'd done very well last time we played Australia at Sydney.
41:04And they responded very well in the field.
41:06And David's batting again.
41:08I think he'll have to rest for a little while after that.
41:11And running forward and diving catches.
41:14But, yeah, a very encouraging performance after yesterday.
41:17Just to elaborate now on what you do from here.
41:19You've got eight points.
41:20You've got one match to play.
41:22Over to...
41:23That's against New Zealand over in Perth.
41:25Seems to me that you'd have to win that one to get through.
41:28Yes, I think so.
41:29So, I think there'd have to be some pretty weird results for us to get through otherwise.
41:34But I think our run rate's good, which will help us if there are two sides on the same number
41:38of points at the end.
41:39Great performance today after what must have been a very disappointing performance yesterday.
41:42Good luck over in.
41:44Right, well, Kim Hughes has come along.
41:46Kim, I'll give you this $1,500 check.
41:47I don't know whether you're going to have to give it back or not.
41:49But it was a bit of a dismal performance today by Australia.
41:52First of all, can I just elaborate on the problems associated with getting your 50 overs bowled?
41:57Well, I think, you know, we're certainly bowling two or three extra overs with regards to wides and no balls,
42:02which doesn't make things that much easy.
42:05And we took a long while for drinks today.
42:08You know, eight minutes and six minutes.
42:10And this sort of thing is just making a difference.
42:12But we've been struggling all year, and it eventually caught up with us today.
42:15And struggling despite the fact, really, that Rodney Hogg and Lawson in particular bowled magnificently today.
42:21Yes, they did.
42:23We're struggling in the middle a little bit.
42:24But Greg on that sort of wicket is reasonably friendly.
42:28And even though we had England three for as long as they kept their heads and played pretty straight,
42:31they're able to get seven or eight reasonably comfortably.
42:34We've only got five bowlers in the side.
42:36Alan Borda, unfortunately, has got a shoulder injury.
42:38Hooksy hasn't done much bowling at all.
42:40And we've been found out with a lack of versatility with only five strike bowlers.
42:45Over to Perth now.
42:46And, well, sorry, you've got a match against New Zealand here tomorrow.
42:48And then you're over to Perth to play another match over there.
42:51You can't afford not to win two more matches.
42:54You've only got two to play.
42:55Because if you do not win two more matches and get yourself 12 points, the chances are, with your run
43:00rate, that you may miss out.
43:02That's correct.
43:03Obviously, England and New Zealand, with their efforts yesterday, certainly their run rate would be a lot better than us.
43:08It's still conceivable that New Zealand could be beaten in all three last games.
43:13But, you know, we've got to make sure we win tomorrow and then win in Perth.
43:16But it's all equal a game.
43:18New Zealand have got three games.
43:20We've got two games.
43:20England have got one game.
43:21And I certainly wouldn't be putting my money on any of the sides to get in the finals.
43:25It's that close.
43:26Right.
43:26Well, you've got a lot of people hoping they see you in the finals.
43:28Good luck.
43:29Thank you very much.
43:30Right.
43:30Well, there's a man of the match award here.
43:32It's a $500 check.
43:33And also this magnificent Benson Hedges gold goblet.
43:36And I don't think there's any doubt about who deserves that today.
43:39David Gower, fantastic catchers.
43:41A tremendous run of big scores.
43:44You must be enjoying it at the moment.
43:46Yes, thanks, Tony.
43:46I'm certainly a lot happier tonight than I was last night.
43:49That must have been a pretty miserable England team that got in their cars and drove home.
43:53Last night, there's hardly a word said for a while.
43:55I think Bob said all that had to be said.
43:57We just cowed our heads, did all the usual sort of headbanging and...
44:01The encouraging thing.
44:02Searching of souls, yeah.
44:03The encouraging thing was that you could come out this morning and turn it on the way there.
44:06Well, yeah, I think most of us probably had a good rest last night.
44:09Probably sort of got everything out of the system, thought about it a bit, realised that
44:13if we didn't win today, then we might as well go home.
44:15Well, it's off to Perth now for the next big one.
44:18And no doubt you'll all be very tense for that one.
44:20Very good luck and thanks for coming this evening.
44:22Thanks very much, Tony.
44:22Right, that's all from down here.
44:23Back to you, Richie.
44:24Thanks, Tony.
44:25And Kim Hughes there mentioned the fact that Australia didn't get through their full 50
44:29overs.
44:30The commentary team has come up with a suggestion for the future.
44:32We think that what happened today with England deprived of three overs was very much to their
44:37disadvantage and very much to Australia's advantage.
44:39And this is what we've come up with as a solution for the future.
44:43The fines remain and the Australians were fined the maximum they could be today for not reaching
44:47their 50 overs.
44:48Then you would double the innings run rate, which is 4.87, and multiply it by the number
44:53of overs not bowled.
44:54That would be the number of overs would be three.
44:56You add that to the total and it becomes 30 runs extra to be added on to England's score.
45:01The team batting second would, of course, receive only the number of overs they bowled,
45:04which today was 47.
45:06And the example you would have of today's game is that Australia's target would have been
45:10the 228 made by England plus the 30-run penalty, and that would be 258 they would
45:16have had to make in 47 overs.
45:18And we think that would be much fairer because the side batting first is certainly disadvantaged
45:23very, very much by what happened out there today.
45:25Three full overs not available to them.
45:27And the Australians, remember, bowled a hunk of no balls and wides as well.
45:32So England winning today's match by 14 runs.
45:35Another match here tomorrow, the last of the triple header games on Australia Day weekend,
45:38and that is between Australia and New Zealand.
45:41And the Australians must be desperate to win now.
45:43They must get another two points to go up to 10 because their run rate overall in this
45:47competition is below that of New Zealand and England.
45:51Good night.
