00:00towards the 40 mark but fresh from that wonderful hundred in the second test at
00:04the Wanderers and a double hundred of course 244 in his last curry cup match
00:10where Hudson did not get runs in his last curry cup match but he's been in
00:14good form and he too the average a little low for a frontline batsman three
00:21test hundreds oh to his credit Mark Islet from the Mgani end and beautifully
00:30played by Andrew Hudson he tried that shot once or twice didn't get his weight
00:35up this time he did and away past the square leg umpire for sure Hudson's
00:42timing is so good reminds me of Alex Stewart a clean striker of the ball a
00:47little bit in the air but really that was beautifully timed that's where he
00:54likes them finds the gap and it'll race away to the boundary waiting for that one
01:02pitched up outside the off stump Mark Islet essentially a swing bowler trying to to
01:08swing it has to give it a chance and if it doesn't do it that's what happens Peter
01:13Martin tallest man in the England to a party but the way through the covers just
01:19to fall
01:22and four more Hudson in full cry I'm not sure Peter Martin is on at the right end at
01:29the Mgani end because the wind is hardly suited to his away swing
01:43a fish but it's four more
01:49a little bit of drift there but the wind of anything is coming out of his left
01:53shoulder and really can't go that sort of stuff to Andrew Hudson he's ready to take
01:59anything on
02:07Dominic cork
02:11set off the back of the pads I think it might be the best and four runs bring
02:17out the 50 partnerships are cracking start for South Africa not 15 overs bold
02:23yet terrific stuff Hudson in particular really has gone off like a train and
02:29Michael Atherton's got to do something it's got to be a bowling change
02:35it's caught caught by Graham Hick at second slip and a fine catch too and that's the
02:45breakthrough England desperately needed because although Kirsten was playing the
02:51anchor all Hudson was prospering at the other end and 54 have come very quickly
02:57for the first wicket it's a better spell he switched to the Old Fort Road end and
03:01I think that'll shoot him better but it was the bounce there rather than movement
03:05and Graham Hick did well because a slip like Hick he's dropped the odd one off a
03:09left-handers in the past that one no mistake at all nice Gary Kirsten's sheet
03:15anchor effort just eight runs out of 54 for the first wicket it really was
03:21the bounce here
03:28and to the captain Hansi Cronier five test hundreds to his credit and the average
03:34has gone over the 40 mark approaching 1500 runs in test match cricket now and he
03:42too has been in tremendous form Richard Illingworth
03:49yes up goes the finger Dave Orchard making his first decision in test match cricket and
03:55a difficult one always the bat pad and let's see what happened the sixth over by
04:03Richard Illingworth he's dropped straight away into length and line and that one
04:07unlucky in a way that it's flicked off the top of the pad onto the glove but
04:10really if you're going to shoulder arms then the bat must be withdrawn completely
04:14David Orchard got that right and it was one that easily he could have got wrong
04:18very good decision see it doesn't think it's going to bounce as much as that off the flap
04:25and not withdrawing the bat and gloves well out of the way and paying the penalty
04:31Crawley doing the job at Silly Point
04:35well nine fours there and really he's dominated the first session so England have hit back now 56 for two
04:50Darrell Cullinan fresh from two splendid six cities at the Wanderers and a 50 in his last innings for border
04:57border and he is approaching a thousand runs and test match cricket
05:12Oh what a beauty that really was just a little wide but early in an innings close enough to make the batsman
05:19play the problems at both ends now that Martin settled in because Illingworth is creating the pressure
05:24little noise there inside of the bat just brushing the pad
05:36no third man
05:39umpire Steve Buckner from the West Indies very welcome guest in this part of the world
05:45run rate that was nestling on four certainly dropped to well below three
05:52well that'll help it along a bit
05:55in the air and Martin has done what they asked him to do
06:02he's caught it
06:03now that is a big blow for South Africa
06:07not far from the lunch interval
06:09that's right only about a quarter of an hour to go
06:12and I can understand Cronje trying to
06:14putting Illingworth away over the top
06:16he really has put the shackles on but he was nowhere near the pitch
06:20and it's a bit surprising he went through with a shot
06:23it was an all or nothing and it's ended up nothing
06:26just eight
06:31and South Africa suddenly in trouble at 73 for three after that tremendous start
06:37Jonty Rhodes coming to the wicket at number five not the young Jacques Cullis that many thought might be the case
06:44average not good for a top quarter batsman
06:48one match saving hundred made against Sri Lanka
06:52Jonty Rhodes just two at lunch with Cullinan on nine
06:58and no doubt round one to England
07:04yeah that was a big session for England in the end
07:06one stage it looked as though South Africa were romping away
07:09but those three wickets it's pegged them back
07:16Eilat not used there beyond the first spell Cork
07:19the heaviest workload as usual look at those figures of Ellingworth at the bottom
07:23there's the man who's made that session two for seven off eight
07:30that must be close no shot offered no says umpire
07:35Ellingworth on his knees
07:37now Richard Ellingworth he's not a great demonstrative appeal
07:40and not like Dominic Cork and that was one he really thought he got
07:44because have a look where it pitches
07:46she's just outside off stump carrying on no turn
07:49doesn't matter whether the pads outside the line or not
07:52he got a reasonable stride in and that is what put enough doubt in umpire Orchard's mind
07:59he's caught caught by Robin Smith at cover point
08:03and Cullinan a bit bogged down and it was just a matter of time
08:08one felt that he was going to try and break the stranglehold
08:11and playing that in the air and Smith pouching it
08:15I think Richard Ellingworth has earned this wicket he's kept them so tight
08:19and that it did drift away there's no question of that had it not swung so much it would probably have been hit through the covers
08:24instead it went pretty hard and that was quite a good catch by Robin Smith
08:30that's the end of Cullinan and you see how many deliveries he's faced
08:33sixty deliveries and two fours in that ten so
08:37that shows how difficult he found to score any runs
08:40it was the away drift that did him
08:43so second wicket for Martin in only his fourth test match
08:50and a great moment for young 20 year old Jacques Cullis from the Western Province
08:56he's been in prolific form
08:58always caught Martin got that one to do just enough to find the outside edge
09:05and now South Africa are really in trouble
09:08yes they are
09:09Calis stood there and you can interpret that one of two ways
09:12either he didn't think he'd hit it or more probably
09:14as I've seen Mark Ramprakash do recently
09:17just the sheer disappointment
09:19you see the bat drawn away from the front pad by the away swing again
09:22and I'm quite sure that Martin now on at the right end
09:26has settled into something like his top form
09:28what a sad moment for Calis an average of 50 in first-class cricket
09:36at a tender age and this season he's really been piling on the runs
09:40but disappointment in his first test
09:42well some great players have started with one less than his one
09:45so he needn't worry about that
09:47but there's the perfect picture of how he went
09:51Brian Macmillan at number seven
09:55relief for South Africa that they can have somebody of his calibre
09:59coming in at number seven
10:02an average of over 45
10:03the highest of any of the South African test players
10:13they all go up
10:15no says umpire Orchard
10:19so he's having quite a rough time in his first test match
10:23see that ball spinning
10:26well was it on to bat then pad and across the back of the bat
10:30England thought so
10:32umpire Orchard didn't
10:34certainly had to contend with a few appeals
10:40Dominique Cork
10:42to Rhodes
10:44appeal for LBW
10:46big stride in
10:47no says umpire Bucknall
10:49Cork can't believe it
10:51well Cork
10:52a great appealer
10:53but bowling from so close
10:55he's got more chance than most
10:57let's see why Buckner said no
10:59it's pitched round about middle and off
11:02and a bit of the pad outside
11:04but not the business part I don't think
11:06got a good stride in
11:07and again
11:08that does wonders
11:09in swaying an umpire
11:11there's a nick down the leg side
11:13just had to get bat on it
11:14and uh
11:15four it was
11:16occasionally that'll find its way into the wicket keepers gloves
11:19but it doesn't look as though it's Dominic Cork's day today
11:24so the hundred brought up with this shot that flies just wide of Russell
11:28and uh
11:29very interesting that South Africa's first 50 came up in the 15th over
11:33and it's taken some 36 overs to make another 50
11:37John T. Rhodes plays his favourite shot
11:39and that's four runs
11:40this one he really did get hold of
11:42yes he did
11:43and it was off the stunt
11:45but it was at the right sort of length
11:47that he could get it almost on the half volley
11:49and therefore get some sort of control in
11:51there it is well pitched up
11:53and able to whack it in front of square
12:00that's all timing
12:01and it might go all the way
12:04it does
12:08Michael Atherton has been trying to block McMillan leg side
12:12and uh
12:13finally the big man has decided
12:15runs have got to come from somewhere
12:17it was nicely timed
12:19using his feet nice
12:25he makes it into the full toss
12:27and packs it away
12:31well this partnership just starting to mean something now
12:34they've had to graft and grind their way through
12:37a lot of trouble
12:38some of itself inflicted from the top order
12:41but they're doing a good job
12:42Mark Islet back at the Mgani end
12:53oh
12:55that was streaky
12:57just wide of
12:59second slip hick
13:01well the slip had been moved
13:07and that rye smile from McMillan
13:09shows that he knows he's got away with a little bit of something
13:11they put him leg side
13:13and lo and behold
13:14more or less from where he'd been
13:16or certainly would have had some sort of chance
13:18had he had another man there
13:19wasn't all that wide of hick
13:22clouds gathering
13:35it's been a big problem over the years here in Durban bad light
13:39just a little push into the covers
13:48I'll get a single
13:49and that brings up a very worthwhile 50 partnership for the sixth wicket
13:54interesting that of the ten biggest partnerships that South Africa has had since reintroduction to test match cricket
14:02five of those have been for the sixth or seventh wicket
14:05so once again the lower order saving the day
14:09well McMillan there 127 balls that partnership has come from I think he's South Africa's best batsman
14:17well always a problem in Durban they've had a lot of rain we've had it all over the country
14:24they've had a couple of looks at the light and the light meters have been out
14:30what are they going to decide on this time
14:33it looks as though they've offered it to the batsmen and they gratefully accept
14:37and well at 2.45 a lot of time is going to be lost
14:42and I doubt where there will be any more play today
14:50unfortunately an early end to the first day's play
14:53the South African scorecard when bad lights start play 139 for 5
14:57a fluently struck 45 from Andrew Hudson
15:00but Kirsten was gone for 8
15:02Cronier the same Cullen and only 10
15:04but Rhodes was still there
15:06with Cullis having failed in his first match
15:08and McMillan are not out 26
15:10139 for 5
15:12let's have a look at the partnerships
15:14and it certainly was a good start from Hudson and Kirsten
15:17the anchor role being played by Kirsten before he went out with a score at 54
15:20so that was a good first wicket partnership
15:22but then the only other partnership meaningful one is the unbeaten one
15:25Jonty Rhodes as always coming to the rescue when things are tough
15:29and Big Mac there as well too
15:31that's 50 off 129 balls
15:34Cork 0 for 41 off 19 overs
15:37Eilat bowled quite well in his second spell
15:39and Martin really came right after 17 rounds off his first 2 overs
15:42he took 3 for 30
15:43rather limp at the mast
15:45and Peter Martin
15:49on the Old Fort Road end
15:53on his court
15:56very good catch too by Jack Russell
15:59as Martin finds the outside edge of Brian McMillan's bat
16:03and that's exactly what England wanted
16:06an early South African wicket to break this partnership
16:09a little bit of a surprise selection for this test
16:12Peter Martin bowled extremely well yesterday
16:14and then started off his day like that
16:16a great catch from Jack Russell
16:17another great catch
16:18and a good wicket for Peter Martin
16:21so a very valuable wicket for England to get
16:24Brian McMillan rated the best South African batsmen by them
16:28so he exits with his score at 28
16:31just adding a couple to his overnight situation
16:35and South Africa adding only 2 runs as well
16:38big blow this for South Africa
16:41and Martin's 4th wicket in the innings
16:44he's only taken 5 wickets in his previous 3 test matches
16:48and an opportunity of getting a 5 in this test match
16:52very good catch by Russell
16:56it was dying on him as he went away to his right
16:59112 test catches now
17:05and of course that world record that he created
17:10at the Wanderers of 11 dismissals in a test match
17:14Dave Richardson he's played some valuable innings
17:17for South Africa an average of over 25
17:20which is not bad for man coming in down the order
17:247 or 8 big appeal for LBW
17:28no says umpires did Bucknell from the West Indies
17:31well the umpires have been put under considerable pressure
17:39stemming from the last match and they're making a lot of good decisions in this one
17:45that's four runs there's no third man
17:50there Richard's been starting a little bit shakily
17:56he didn't quite seem to be in sync with his game
18:01as he hits this one a little bit of a stab of that shot over the slips
18:06but still four runs
18:13beauty for Martin
18:16he certainly got the ball to go away from the right-hander
18:20well one run doesn't see from this action shot
18:23is the way he went wide of the crease when he started the delivery
18:26so the line of the ball changing beating Jonte Rhodes
18:30Mark Eilert an appeal for LBW
18:33up goes the finger of umpire Dave Orchard
18:36and Jonte Rhodes has to go
18:39and like Macmillan he hasn't added much to his overnight situation
18:44well another typically gritty knock from Jonte Rhodes
18:48he was under pressure to begin with
18:50he gut stood out and got a fairly good stride in here
18:54and then missed the ball as it swung in towards him
18:59delighted Mark Eilert appealing and then getting the affirmative action from Dave Orchard
19:05he has the ability to straighten it up onto the right-hander
19:10he also has the ability of course to go across
19:13so Jonte Rhodes like Macmillan adding just two to his overnight situation
19:18but in innings full of character once again
19:21over three hours at the wicket good stride in there
19:24so a little bit unlucky I think an ifish sort of LBW decision
19:28well if one looked at it a couple of times on had to go with the umpire
19:31so and he only saw it once
19:33I thought it was at the end a good decision by Dave Orchard
19:36islet again from the Mgani end
19:43across him he's got the edge you heard the sound and Russell does the rest
19:48and Dave Richardson has gone caught behind
19:51he's got a few that like the Jonte Rhodes LBW had come back at him straightened up on him
19:57swung into him and now suddenly the one from Islet that goes across the right hander
20:02and it finds the edge
20:04well it's absolutely amazing what happens when the left armor gets the inswinger to go
20:08batsmen tend to fiddle like that at the one that goes straight across them
20:12really good delivery it looked a weak shot from Dave Richardson
20:15but in fact he was rather fooled by the fact that the other deliveries had been coming back into him
20:20in the air and then got that one so a relatively routine catch for Jack Russell
20:25he makes them look so easy because he moves so well and another valuable wicked for England
20:32disaster for South Africa just 14 runs added on the second day Craig Matthews
20:38remember that splendid 62 not out at Headingley Leeds
20:43second test match against England last year where he along with the hundred made by Kirsten
20:48saved the day for South Africa and the test match he also did well at Lord's if I remember
20:58big shot he's gone
21:02didn't get going on this occasion and this one if one watches closely one sees the normal delivery now
21:08from Islet coming back onto him and beating the inside edge of the bat his foot going a little bit too far across the line
21:16so he was he had to play across his pad a little bit wasn't able to do that and in the end routine decision for the umpire
21:23yes same sort of delivery to Rhodes but he didn't get the same stride in that Rhodes got and he was definitely very much adjacent
21:33so four wickets lost so that he runs
21:40now Alan Donald who is progressing with the bat sees high score 33 that was made this year against Zimbabwe in the one-off test up in a Harare
21:55in the one-off test up in a Harare
22:02and that's four runs
22:04well I brought the mid-off into a silly mid-off and he nearly blocked that and it's raced away to the boundary
22:11I think it was an attempted Yorker from Islet that's always a useful delivery to a tail ender wasn't quite the right length
22:20Donald just thrust it away good shot
22:27well
22:28well it'll be runs I think because even though he didn't offer a shot he was taking evasive action
22:34four leg buys that's the way it works no such thing as fast bowlers union anymore
22:40and look at that show just having a look at the shoulder obviously stung him as it went past
22:45so one up in the block oh another one short take that it'll go in the memory bank deeply fun for here
22:53no it that's the one we're remembering a lot good shot through mid wicket and he kept it down to fine shot by
23:04Sean Pollack
23:06Sean Pollack
23:07Sean Pollack gains in our admiration every time he comes out onto the field
23:12first of all his bowling has been dynamic and his batting is improving all the time
23:17streaky
23:19there's no third man
23:23so it's four runs
23:25South Africa still deep in trouble so every run being greeted with a huge round of applause by this enthusiastic crowd
23:40good shot straight down the ground
23:46and this partnership now will be really getting under the skin of the English players
23:54well they came together at 153 so as I've said every run valuable
24:01just chips it away on the onside and it's got enough on it and we'll go all the way
24:14well this is one of the most remarkable improvements that I've ever seen in cricket because Alan Donald was really
24:21as we called a walking bonus point a few years ago and look at this now that's an accomplished shot
24:27and this young man has an average of 50 in castle curry cup of cricket in South Africa this year and look at that
24:33that's why that's a glorious cover drive absolutely classic shot as a sort of batsman that one is so surprised to
24:41see him batting that low for Natal because he's really a superb cricketer and he's a worthy successor
24:48when it comes the time for Brian McMillan to give away as South Africa's all-rounder
24:52well he has bowled Natal to the top of the castle cup but his batting contributions have been significant
24:59drop just short I think there of Russell there was no doubt a definite little inside edge there but dropping short I think of the keeper
25:08well it has to be considered a half chance because he although he was going the other direction his hand
25:15didn't come forward if he stretched forward he might have caught that one gets it away back with a square
25:23Crawley is oops he pulled up suddenly there and it went for four just as he was straining to get round and it looks as though
25:33he might have done a hamstring so this partnership not only from a runs point of view is it becoming a great
25:42irritation to England but because of it suddenly Crawley looks as though he's in trouble well it looks like
25:50big trouble that shows you just how quickly he had to pull up as he felt the pull in the left hamstring and
25:58uh he's really under under a considerable discomfort able to walk off the field but that's because the
26:06the injury is still warm I'm sure you'll find that when it stiffens up he's going to be in a lot of pain
26:11Martin again to Pollock nice looking drive I don't think it'll go for four but it'll bring up the 50
26:19that's the partnership between these two and the crowd love it beautiful day here at Kingsmead sunshine
26:30good crowd in and heroics from Donald and Pollock
26:34the record of 44 between Dave Richardson and Farney de Villa is the best ever at Kingsmead for the 10th
26:50wicket and now that of course surpassed by those two there you see the bandage that Crawley has around
26:58that hamstring and he looks in considerable discomfort as you say now that it's it's cooled off
27:11certainly Martin has peppered Donald with a few short deliveries and Donald will remember them
27:16well he's much faster than Martin and that action has caused him some considerable discomfort
27:23he's been suffering from a groin injury and has been rested for a couple of provincial games
27:29so this is a big worry for from the South African point of view
27:34in the air but safe
27:36in four runs so after having a couple of bounces bolded in and maybe just aggravating that groin a little bit
27:45he suddenly comes right and decides to lash out at Martin and gets four runs over covers
27:53yes well he's obviously in discomfort grimacing all the time now
27:58but past bowlers get used to these things
28:01Richard Illingworth and he's bowled him
28:04and Illingworth the spinner and it's so interesting that after only five overs of the new ball
28:11the left arm spinner was back to try and sort this final partnership out
28:15and Illingworth has done so and this is a beautiful slow drifting arm ball that goes through the gate
28:23well great experience here from Illingworth perfect line and link and Alan Donald succumbing at last
28:30but really the most wonderful partnership by the South Africans putting on something like 70
28:36and Alan Donald almost his top score in test particular
28:40it's just one short of the 33 he made against Zimbabwe earlier
28:43and over an hour and a half at the wicket with Pollock
28:46the best partnership ever for the 10th wicket between Tuppy Owen Smith and Sandy Bell at Leeds in 1929
28:55and 72 now they made and some respectability in the end to that South African scorecard
29:02after a great start when Grenier won the toss and that dramatic collapse to 153 for 9
29:09and then Pollock and Donald with their 72 runs from 149 balls lifting it to 225
29:17so unusual to have the last wicket as the biggest partnership
29:23Cork the man who took so many wickets nine of them at the Wanderers no luck this time
29:28Islet took all three today bowled much better with the old ball
29:32Martin 4 for 60 bowled well after lunch yesterday and again today
29:38Richard Illingworth of course was the man who applied all the pressure in his bowling
29:46average approaching 45 Alex Stewart once he gets going he's a very good player and of course
29:53Atherton his average hugely boosted by that 185 not out his top score made to save the test match
30:01at the Wanderers going past the 4,000 run mark in the process
30:06Alan Donald from the old Fort Road end he's caught
30:14he's brilliantly caught at the finer of the two gullies Andrew Hudson the man who took the catch
30:23and that will be a welcome sight for the South Africans Mike Atherton the England captain's back
30:29well there's a great feeling here among the journalists that once Atherton goes that's half the England resolve gone
30:36and so South Africa could have had no better start than this a brilliant low catch by Andrew Hudson going sharply but low and he picked it up with ease in the end so great delight to see the back of Mike Atherton for only two
30:55first over of the England innings just look at that catch he had to come forward and go down to make it
31:04to make it superb pair of hands now Graham Thorpe having to come in at number three because of the hamstring injury to John Crawley
31:13brought him to the side to replace the outer form Mark Ramprakash but no luck for Crawley and Thorpe is the man out there
31:23he's caught he's caught Mike Cullinan in the slips another brilliant catch he won't go he thinks it might have dropped short but up goes the finger from umpire Steve Buckner
31:35just a little look across to Dave Orchard Orchard acknowledged that it had carried and Cullinan that's his second beautiful low catch that he's taken in the series
31:45well he's got wonderful hands Daryl Cullinan and Graham Thorpe doesn't like batting number three unlike Graham Hick who's desperate to bat
31:52up the order but the England selectors won't let him and this is why Graham Thorpe doesn't like batting here the ball angling across him
31:59and Daryl Cullinan another superb catch right on the ground but he did pick it up and everyone in the South African camp delighted so
32:08England's second most valuable player now exits the sea
32:24so like his captain just two runs in England 13 for two Donald has struck twice this will tell us I think if it carried the super slow-mo
32:34yes what a fine catch
32:37now Robin Smith scheduled to bat at number six up the order Hick in other words not moving up staying at five Smith leapfrogging
32:48over him and into number four because of Crawley being injured
32:53oh that's over the top of slips and four runs first ball from Robin Smith what a shot to play well it just shows the tension in the man
33:08he's desperate here's a full page article in the local newspaper about how desperate he was to get a hundred here at Kingsmeade in his hometown and this was the first ball
33:17guess who John Pee Rhodes well another man on his home ground he's the hero here alright he's really living up to that worship
33:32he's so confident about the dive that he doesn't really worry about moving his feet too much knows that by diving he will get there and he will stop the ball
33:46nice shot
33:52well time was well up to him just use the pace of the delivery through mid wicket for four change of tactics here that didn't work
34:01Nancy Cronje moving an extra man on to the offside into the sketching position and reaction from Robin Smith to use the gap
34:09he's got this one away backward a square go all the way and stray onto the leg stump to English batsman quite a difficult thing to do because there's a reasonably stiff breeze today into the bowler from this end the
34:33end
34:38Craig Matthews back in the South African side and with no third man that's hammered away and Smith has come out here blazing
34:46yes I felt that the gully might so easily have gone back five meters and might have had a better chance to catch that one because it went past him like a
34:54tracer bullet
34:55Ryan McMillan from the Mgani end lucky that's four runs over the keeper's head
35:05Alex Stewart's feet were not working so well at this stage he's he's committing himself very quickly to the back foot not getting properly into line so he was straight behind this one and edged it over the keeper
35:12full toss swinging full toss he had to really reach for that but it's a bonus four runs for Smith
35:31run McMillan trying to give the ball extra time to swing slightly over pitching it and well put away that's the sign of a class batsman
35:41leaning into it just to push it into the gap
35:46Matthews to Stewart
35:49oh a glorious shot his first step is back and then he came forward into the ball and placed it beautifully
36:00yes again watch the feet not really moving well he doesn't get forward but still good timing
36:06getting right through that Alan Donald putting a guard on the hamstring
36:15maybe he just got a little twinge of the hamstring over and above the problems of the groin while he was batting
36:22and that's away for four if you stray onto the leg stump they'll work your way there as easy as anything
36:31well this one was actually dangerous for a short leg Gary Kirsten here because it comes straight off the face of the bat
36:39and he has no chance of even considering moving look at that by the time he moved was past him and it could so easily
36:46have hit him the partnership gaining now in credibility 52 runs almost equally shared between both bats
36:54but that's right
37:04heel for LBW
37:07could only have been height I think that saved him there
37:10yes again getting committed onto the back foot Alex Stewart
37:14so the ball when it seems can tend to beat the bat
37:19and did so here but it ball a bit high
37:25is he gone
37:26yes Matthews thinks he's got him so does McMillan
37:29and another good catch in the slips on the South Africans this time those huge pause of Brian McMillan
37:37well these low good catches are becoming routine for the side they're actually making them look easier than they really are
37:43and a fine delivery from Craig Matthews just when it looked as though the batsman was settled and playing him comfortably look how far forward he has to go for that
37:53that's a very difficult thing to do for a slip fielder but delight for Craig Matthews and for the South African side
38:00and for a big man like McMillan to get forward just over an hour and a half for his 34 he started by racing to 18 of only 13 deliveries but pushing at that one and tremendous catch by Brian McMillan in the fingers
38:22so Graham Hick now comes to the wicket with England in trouble even though they're only looking at the poor South African first any score of 225
38:32because made two hundreds against South Africa one at Headingley and that hundred and forty one at Centurion Park
38:39gone Andrew Huckstrom he pouches his second and that went quickly to him
38:55the first one that he got that of Atherton was low was a brilliant catch but that went high head height
39:01and he snatched it and Stewart who was just looked as though he was settled and he was in and he's dangerous when he's like that
39:11and that's a great wicket for the South Africans Craig Matthews inducing another loose shot here Alex Stewart playing away from his body
39:19hitting it firmly and Andrew Hudson showing that those hands of ears are getting safer year by year but another solid performance by Alex Stewart
39:29and another useful decision of dismissal by the South African team so England now getting into deep trouble at 93 for free
39:36Craig Matthews being preferred to Merrick Pringle in the South African side and well he's producing the goods with a little help from his friends
39:47Jack Russell what a thorn in the flesh of the South Africans he's been all of the South Africans in fact he's made 471 runs
39:58including that hundred and three fifties and with four not outs an average of 94.2 here in South Africa on tour
40:10lovely shot by Hick there off the back foot that's one of his strengths
40:15it's another man from the African continent Graham Hick played perm laser week when he was under 13 in South Africa
40:22and he's another man very keen to do well here certainly with shots like that there's no reason why shouldn't
40:29he's caught brilliantly brilliantly caught by John T. Rhodes who else what a diving catch that was and Jack Russell has gone
40:40he's better for over 24 hours against South Africans on this tour and he's really been a pain in the neck for the South Africans including that wonderful four and a half hour match saving performance where he stayed with Atherton at the Wanderers but John T. Rhodes ends it all with this in unbelievable effort well one might have expected it was going to take something brilliant to get rid of Jack Russell and it certainly did
40:47but all credit to Craig Matthews who induced the shot and then to John T. Rhodes who's superb agility managed to get rid of Jack Russell and it certainly did
40:54and then to John T. Rhodes who's superb agility
41:21here is superb he doesn't have the time to move his feet very much but such is
41:26the confidence that he has in his diving ability that he just launches himself
41:30full length and gets it with two hands he moves so quickly that's his his
41:36secret that was really an unbelievable effort well would you believe it England
41:44a hundred and nine for five and what started out as a disastrous day for South
41:51Africa England all going their way certainly round one yesterday went to
41:56England now the whole balance is swung again Dominique cork new to test cricket
42:01coming in against the West Indies and the second tested lords had a great series
42:05with ball particularly and bat that was a closest thing couldn't have been too far
42:13away from the short leg Gary Kirsten well such has been the brilliance of the
42:18South African fielding and catching that one gets the feeling that they can catch
42:22anything but this one just proved elusive for him even though he moved incredibly
42:27well to get to
