00:07Hello, welcome to tonight's wide world of sports and the highlights of this
00:09in the third over.
00:11It's just a single on the board and Richard Hadley is the man coming in to bowl
00:14to English opener, Ian Berth.
00:16And your commentators are Bill Lurie and Keith Stackpole.
00:20Oh, he's gone for the big straight hit off the back foot.
00:24That's probably the way Ian Berth should play.
00:26Natural hitter of the ball.
00:28Barry Troops to Fieldsman and three runs to both of them.
00:34Cairns.
00:37Great shot.
00:39Down the gap just outside the one of the off stump.
00:42Places into the cover boundary for four runs.
00:45The over, no wicket for eight.
00:49Berthamon strike to Hadley.
00:53Set well.
00:55Leads Troop at mid on.
00:59One chase for John Wright.
01:01Two for three.
01:03Nice scamper back to the four.
01:06All run.
01:12New Zealand right on top here.
01:14Bertham take a strike.
01:18And a lot of striking at the pad.
01:22Morning, Fred Troopman.
01:23Morning, Richie.
01:24Morning, everyone.
01:26The ball just moving around a little bit.
01:28And Ian Bertham are quite able to lay the butt on it as he'd like to.
01:35Cairns.
01:36It's Tabaret tighter.
01:38He's on three.
01:39Just attacking middle and leg stump.
01:44That's an unusual stroke from Chris Tabaret.
01:47Normally he's sitting straight.
01:48It may be that he got that one away with the swing from Lance Cairns.
01:57Matt and Sneddon.
01:58They're behind it.
02:01They do pick up four for that.
02:06Just a little bit of annoyance there from Sneddon.
02:09And I think that Bertham got the previous ball away in the air without being caught.
02:14Dropped that one in very short.
02:17You see, for the pull shot, if anything, it was a bit early, actually.
02:23Didn't possibly bounce as high as he thought as well, but I'm afraid in one day cricket
02:30runs from any shot.
02:32It doesn't matter.
02:34That's his third boundary in 20.
02:36And I know that Ian Bertham wouldn't consider that a good shot himself.
02:47I think that one's okay.
02:49First bounce into the crowd.
02:52And now Sneddon has a problem.
02:56Now ten of the last three balls.
03:01It's more like Ian Bertham picking that up.
03:04Timing it well.
03:05First bounce into the crowd.
03:10Good shot, that in fact.
03:13Ten runs have come off the last three delivers.
03:18Two, four, four.
03:28And that's a better one still.
03:30Straight into the crowd.
03:32That's a good example of how short the boundaries are.
03:35Six to both of them.
03:37Sixteen off the over from Margaret Sneddon.
03:39And England none for 37.
03:47I've seen Bertham pitching it over the top.
03:49I don't think he could go.
03:50I think the ball that's got this out thing seems a bit slow, but he ought to be looking for
03:55four.
03:55I know Tavare will be.
03:57And in fact he's going for four, Tavare.
03:59And Ian Bertham's going to have to move, but there's a fumble there.
04:03Ian Bertham certainly is slow between the wickets at the side of Tavare.
04:07Tavare lapping him really.
04:11Ian Chatfield.
04:17In the air, short boundary.
04:20And way into the crowd.
04:23Clifty comes up for England.
04:25And Botham has transformed this game in just a few overs.
04:30At one point he'd made just 14 from 31 deliveries faced.
04:35And now he's made 47 from 42 deliveries faced.
04:44Yes, he picked that one up quite nicely.
04:46And that's gone a few rows back.
04:57Four for that.
04:58Straight into the fence.
05:00Fifty up for Botham.
05:06And he's picked the gap on the offside.
05:08Made his own gap in fact, by hitting it beautifully away down the ground.
05:13It wouldn't matter if there was a man out there, if he smashed that away over the middle of the
05:18six.
05:19That was a glorious hit.
05:24I think he went down so the legs didn't pick it up Richard too.
05:27It's a beautiful shot.
05:28Struck with great power.
05:31And also timed at the same time.
05:34Beautiful.
05:37That's his third six.
05:42That's his third six.
05:43That's his fourth six.
05:44You don't need to worry about that.
05:45That's right back into the crowd.
05:47That is a colossal six.
05:50You can really pick that one.
05:52They've got to change their tactics New Zealand.
05:55They're giving Botham room to hit the ball on the up here.
05:58He's making his own strokes as well.
06:00But they've got to start spearing the ball in straight at the block hole.
06:04It's got to be Yorker, Yorker, Yorker.
06:06Because not even Botham can smash a Yorker over the fence.
06:11Might be able to clip it away on the onside.
06:12He might be able to force it on the off.
06:14But he certainly can't hit it over the top.
06:16And they've just got to decide to keep the ball right up on that batting crease.
06:27That's the end of Ian Botham.
06:29It's a good inning. 65 out of 75 made.
06:33And in only the 16th over, Botham has been dismissed.
06:39And that's given England a chance now to go along to a total of 240, 250.
06:47Off your stump, round the over.
06:50Square leg with that short bound.
06:52And we're looking for number six.
06:53But that's been a great inning from Ian Botham.
06:57It's one for 75.
07:01One for 86.
07:04Tavare on strike.
07:05On 16.
07:07Chatfield the bowler.
07:09He's going to be out.
07:10He's gone.
07:11A man down there.
07:12So Tavare opening his shoulders.
07:15Hitting the ball over the top.
07:16And the New Zealanders anticipating that because they've got right perfectly placed.
07:21Down at square leg.
07:22And so Tavare departs.
07:24Having been caught down on the boundary.
07:28And this is how it happened.
07:29And what an ironic twist of fate.
07:31Because that was probably the hardest hit that Tavare has made all day.
07:34He's very strong on the leg side.
07:36And he took that off his pads.
07:37Hitted hard, high and handsome.
07:39But straight into the hands of the deep square leg field.
07:42So, Chris Tavare goes.
07:44And England are two for 86.
07:48Alan Lamb, the new batsman.
07:50He has a strike rate of 80.54.
07:54Which is pretty good.
07:55And he's out there because Tavare lofted this one down the ground to square leg.
08:00Right was well placed there.
08:02Made no mistake whatsoever.
08:07Oh, nice shot.
08:08It's very strong outside the off stump there.
08:11And that one wasn't that wide.
08:12And also bounced just a little bit.
08:13But Lamb was still good enough.
08:15Placed that square of the wicket down to the boundary for four.
08:21New Zealand very well disciplined in the field.
08:26It's in the air and he's dropped him.
08:29Well, that was a difficult one.
08:30It was hit back very firmly in Chatfield.
08:33Stuck his left hand out there.
08:34Trying to get a grip of this one, but didn't.
08:37This could be a costly mess for New Zealand.
08:40Lamb stopping his shot.
08:41It wasn't all that difficult a chance.
08:44In fact, there could have been a possibility that Chatfield not stuck out of hand there.
08:48It might even have gone to mid-off.
08:50Although the deflection took it eventually to mid-off.
08:53So probably it might have gone a little bit too straight for mid-off.
08:56Unless he'd moved very quickly to his right.
08:58It's going to be true from the river end.
09:07Lamb has struck the ball pretty well since he came to the crease.
09:11Places that one nicely and Martin Sneddon has to make a diving save.
09:15And in the end, the dive is in vain as he knocks it back into the boundary.
09:22It occurs to bowl a new over to David Gower.
09:31Good lofted shot there by David Gower.
09:37Nice little timed shot from David Gower.
09:40Lofting that away to the backward square leg boundary.
09:44Gower once again going over square leg.
09:48This time in front of square leg.
09:50A very good shot from David Gower.
09:52Making use of the short boundaries here at the Adelaide Oval.
09:55And certainly assessing that leg side field that's employed by Geoff Houth.
10:00Just the one man out.
10:01And he's down there very fine.
10:02So anything that gets over that inside field.
10:05Particularly in front of square leg.
10:07Usually finds that boundary fence.
10:09Just a short boundary out there.
10:17Gary Troop.
10:18That deep third man.
10:20And Alan Lamb very quickly coming back for the second.
10:23But not quick enough.
10:24He's been a judged run out by umpire Dick French.
10:27A very good return from Gary Troop.
10:30Well Alan Lamb I'm sure when he set off after that shot.
10:34Only had it in mind to go for a single.
10:36But a good return from Gary Troop.
10:37And a good quick take by Warren Lees.
10:39He got it down to the stumps.
10:42Dislodge the bales.
10:43And an excellent decision there by the umpire at square leg.
10:46Dick French.
10:47End of a good little innings from Alan Lamb.
10:49Not quite enough.
10:50But England three for 121.
10:54Here's Gary Troop.
10:59It's in the air but safe.
11:01Don't be too pleased about that.
11:09Randall's away.
11:11First time he's been able to break loose.
11:13And Gary Troop is the sufferer.
11:17He's now had 36 taken from this his sixth over.
11:21Or his seventh over.
11:26And Randall for the first time is able to do what Tony Gregg was suggesting.
11:32Take boundaries as well as give David Gower the strike.
11:37Yes that is a good shot.
11:38There's a man back at square leg.
11:40For the one that played square of the wicket.
11:42He didn't.
11:42He played it straight.
11:48I don't think Geoff Howe is going to be very pleased about this at all.
11:54And in fact Howe is making strides to get across to Troop to have a word with him.
12:02Great shot.
12:05Yes that was a beautiful shot.
12:08It's a short boundary down there and it's four.
12:11Nineteen runs coming from that over.
12:13Randall moving back to play the shot through the offside and hitting it for four.
12:16Three for 163.
12:20Martin Stedden has to come back.
12:22He's come back in place of Richard Hadley.
12:29David Gower.
12:32Four runs there.
12:33Straight through where the first or second slip would have been.
12:41To Derek Randall.
12:43It's in the air but it beats cover.
12:44Fine shot to Derek Randall.
12:47Racing away towards the boundary.
12:50Four fours to Derek Randall who is in good touch.
12:53And England playing very well for him.
12:56Chutfield to Gower.
12:57Oh fine shot.
12:58What an over for England.
13:01Beautifully placed.
13:02It makes it look so easy.
13:03It's not easy to dance down the wicket.
13:04Hit a medium pace.
13:05So over cover him.
13:07On the up.
13:08Hit that affection square.
13:09Hit it with tremendous power.
13:12Sneddon to Randall.
13:14That's out.
13:14Straight to right at short cover.
13:17He took a red hot catch.
13:18That was really going.
13:20That's a breakthrough that New Zealand needed to slow the numbers.
13:23England four for 204.
13:27And Randall here giving himself some room.
13:30He's outside the leg stump with his feet.
13:32And he hit that ball in the middle.
13:34But John Wright hung on to it beautifully.
13:36And that was a wicket that New Zealand desperately needed to stem this flow of runs.
13:41And that's England 204 for the loss of four wickets.
13:46Cairns to Gower.
13:48Oh what a beautiful shot from David Gower.
13:50Straight down the field.
13:52Now it feels a little bit slow.
13:54They're looking certainly for three.
13:57But it's come through to the boundary.
13:59That's another boundary for David Gower.
14:01That's his eleventh.
14:02It's four for 218.
14:06Steddon Bowles and Trevor Chesty's taking strike.
14:12Pete's coming on.
14:13Yeah.
14:15Scamper through the look for four run.
14:18Chesty fresh to the crease.
14:19Charging to him.
14:21David Gower.
14:22Fine judge of the run.
14:23Comes back easily for the fourth run.
14:28Gary Troop to David Gower.
14:32Cuts it away.
14:33What a good look.
14:35One to Gower.
14:36And he's sentry.
14:37It's been a superb innings.
14:39He's timed the ball beautifully.
14:40He's hit the ball into the gaps.
14:43And over the top.
14:45And what a knock for him.
14:50Claws from David Gower's England team mates in the dressing room.
14:55The third century that David Gower has helped himself to from the New Zealand attack in these
14:59Vincent and Hedges World Series Cup matches.
15:01The fourth century of the competition.
15:04All of them have been scored by Englishmen against New Zealand.
15:09Twelve fours in that knock.
15:11And now Jesty's clips that one away.
15:13Could be out.
15:13He's gone.
15:14No drop.
15:14He's dropped in.
15:17My goodness.
15:18Martin Sneddon down there.
15:19All he had to do was stand and catch it.
15:21It was straight down his throat.
15:24How he dropped that, Peter.
15:25I'll never know.
15:26Martin Sneddon is regarded as such a fine catcher of the ball in the outfield.
15:29Remember the catch he took in Melbourne last Saturday to get rid of what was at Greg Chappell.
15:33There was one straight down his throat.
15:34And he grasped it.
15:36That perhaps that effort of Sneddon's just indicative of the way things have gone for New Zealand today.
15:41Apart from Hadley and to a lesser extent Cairns, they haven't bowled very well.
15:45And now they're dropping catches.
15:51The guy right down the ground.
15:53This will be six.
15:54It's a big hit.
15:56Beautiful side shot.
15:57That's Scour's first six played way over the top of the mid-wicket boundary.
16:01And a little pat on the back for him there from Trevor Jesty.
16:08He zipped there.
16:09It's high.
16:09It's going down towards the boundary.
16:10This should be out.
16:12It is.
16:13Jeremy Coney down there at deep square leg.
16:15Making no mistake on that occasion.
16:18That was hit.
16:19Miles in there.
16:19Gower going for a big six down towards the square leg.
16:23Never quite a little lift.
16:24And it was well taken.
16:26It was indeed.
16:27It went very high.
16:28Troop angled the ball into Gower.
16:31Gower helped on its way.
16:32Coney down on the boundary there.
16:34Just misjudging it slightly.
16:35Having to go to his right.
16:37But eventually making good his ground.
16:39Taking the catch.
16:40And so very tired.
16:41David Gower goes out.
16:425'7".
16:47Troop to Jesty.
16:49And that's smashed away.
16:50Down the ground towards deep mid-wicket.
16:52One bounce.
16:53Two bounces.
16:54Into the fence.
16:55Four more to Jesty.
17:02And Jesty really has been a breath of fresh air.
17:05In this England side.
17:06He's not afraid to throw the bat.
17:08At anything that goes down the leg side.
17:10And on this occasion.
17:11He really middles it.
17:12And sends it.
17:13One, two, three bounces.
17:15Into the fence for four.
17:18Three balls remain.
17:20282 on the board for England.
17:22Jesty has 39 of those runs.
17:24Can they score?
17:25Another eight runs in the remaining deliveries.
17:29Well that's six.
17:30That's a big six.
17:32Over the top at square leg.
17:34There's a man down there.
17:35But he would have needed to have been 35 foot tall.
17:38If he was going to make any impression on that one.
17:40Middle of the way down to square leg.
17:41So six to Trevor Jesty.
17:43And now England are just one run short of the best ever score.
17:48In the Benson and Hedges World Series Cup.
17:52With two deliveries remaining.
17:54And I think there's no doubt as to what Jesty will do for these two balls.
17:59He's got up to 45.
18:01He could easily get his 50.
18:03Just two more balls remaining.
18:05Can he get to his house sentry?
18:09I doubt it.
18:10He's going to get one.
18:11And so the last ball will be faced by Gould.
18:13And so that equals the highest score in the Benson and Hedges World Series Cup.
18:18I should think they'll be scampering for another one.
18:20And so England will probably take that record off Australia.
18:26Australia in fact scored the record score of 289 against New Zealand.
18:34In Sydney in the 80-81 season.
18:38And this is the last ball of the innings.
18:40An innings which has featured some magnificent stroke by Gower and Botham in particular.
18:45And latterly Jesty.
18:49No ball called.
18:50So they have to bowl another one.
18:52And that's the record.
18:54I was just thinking then that Ian Gould came in to face one ball.
19:00It was going to be his first and last delivery of the game.
19:03And now he gets off the mark.
19:07And yet another ball to you people.
19:10And the record now gone.
19:14And Trevor Jesty too has another opportunity to see if he can get himself a 50.
19:19He's got 46.
19:20So a fall due.
19:23290 the score.
19:24Five wickets down.
19:25The last ball of the innings.
19:26He smashed it.
19:28And it'll be six.
19:28That's Jesty's 50.
19:32Over the top of deep square leg.
19:34Jesty undefeated on 52.
19:37What a useful quick fire innings that was.
19:39And so England now have finished their innings.
19:42It's five for 296.
19:44A very, very big score.
19:49Very, very difficult target set for New Zealand there.
19:53297 runs.
19:54And the rate is only fractionally below six per over.
19:57And I doubt very much if any side could fail to defend that number of runs.
20:01It would be an extraordinary match if that was shown to be so.
20:04We pick up play now in the second over.
20:06Two runs on the board.
20:07Robin Jackman is the bowler coming in to Glenn Turner.
20:10And your commentators Ian Chappell and Keith Stackpole.
20:17Good shot from Turner.
20:19Just beating Jesty.
20:21It went in the air.
20:22But it was very well timed.
20:28One in the air.
20:30Just safely away to the boundary.
20:32So a good over there for New Zealand.
20:35One for 13.
20:41Turner going over the top and doing it very successfully.
20:46Didn't try and hit that one too hard.
20:48Just timed it.
20:49Made sure that he cleared the infield.
20:52And a good boundary from Glenn Turner.
20:56Robin Jackman again.
20:59I think he's a run for 17 from two overs.
21:01Been very expensive.
21:04He's again short.
21:06Glenn Turner in good position for that.
21:09Rucking away a square cut.
21:15Willis has had two overs for just two runs.
21:20Oh, and there he's got him.
21:21Glenn Turner backing away.
21:23And once again, Willis by keeping that ball up.
21:26And at the stumps.
21:27Has had success over Glenn Turner.
21:30That'll please him knowing.
21:32Badly played by Glenn Turner.
21:35Just a matter of Bob Willis pitching it there.
21:37And the in-swing just doing the rest.
21:39Well bowled.
21:40There was no panic about Bob Willis.
21:41He just continued to bowl at the stumps.
21:43And knew the inevitable would happen.
21:46So Glenn Turner's a big blow for New Zealand.
21:48Out for a quick 23.
21:50New Zealand won for 26.
21:54And Geoff Howarth comes to the wicket with a big job ahead of him.
22:05He's gone.
22:05Played on.
22:07Not in form Geoffrey Howarth.
22:08And New Zealand are now in trouble.
22:12Two down.
22:1333 on the board.
22:14And we're into the 10th over.
22:17And once again the drive gets Howarth into trouble.
22:20The ball moving away a long way outside the off stump.
22:22Howarth chasing it.
22:23Trying to score runs with that favourite drive of his.
22:26Gets an inside edge.
22:27Drags it from a long way outside the off stump onto his stumps.
22:30And the second wicket has fallen with 33 runs on the board.
22:35Wright has made only 11 in 13, in 12 overs.
22:39We're into the 13th now.
22:41And Jesty is to bowl right arm medium pace.
22:46It could well be wide.
22:48And it'll be several wide because, well if it doesn't go for four,
22:52they may well run five if they've got the energy in this 35 degree temperature.
23:06A wide signal there by Uncle Dick French.
23:13Mark gets under it.
23:14There's a man down there.
23:15It's Marks.
23:16He's under it.
23:17And he drops it.
23:19Well, he never really got right into position.
23:21He caught it low.
23:22He took his eye off the ball.
23:23And that was really a sitter.
23:24Mark's not making his ground.
23:26Catching it below his eye level.
23:28Jesty dropped it in short.
23:29Wright picked it up.
23:31Straight down his throat.
23:32He balked.
23:34And didn't come forward.
23:36Below the eye level.
23:38Cardinal Sin in the outfield.
23:40And it's two for 53.
23:43Eddie Emmings in the meantime, he's organising his field.
23:50This time he sweeps in the air.
23:52It's Lamb, he won't drop it.
23:54Oh, he does.
23:55Dear, dear.
23:56What's happening to a turn?
23:58Nothing to do with me, Bill.
24:00I'm just watching you putting the evil iron in him.
24:02He said, he won't drop it.
24:03I don't think he even got a touch.
24:04So you're right, he didn't drop it.
24:07But this was to somebody like Alan Lum.
24:09You're quite right, Bill.
24:10He's such a good catcher at the ball.
24:14But he looked to me as though he never laid a finger on it.
24:18After 19 overs, New Zealand two for 74.
24:20And Eddie Hemings.
24:23Attacking off Spinner.
24:24Gives that one some room.
24:25And that's a good shot.
24:27John Wright.
24:28Made some room for himself there.
24:30And cracked it through the covers.
24:34Jesty.
24:37That's one fine.
24:39That's four runs.
24:40It was only yesterday that the Australian manager, John Edwards, was concerned about Hogg and Hooks playing in today's match.
24:48Offspinner Hemings coming in to go to Crowe.
24:50Beautiful strike of the ball.
24:53And then Ron saying that to Jim Crowe.
24:55Jeff Crowe, I should say, has struck Hemings over the top of mid-on for a nicely chained boundary.
25:02Eddie Hemings to right.
25:05Whoops. Chance here.
25:06He hits the stumps.
25:07He hits them.
25:09He's gone, is he?
25:11He's home.
25:14Now he's out.
25:15The umpire didn't even give a decision there as Wright walks from the ground.
25:21And this was a mix-up.
25:24Didn't know whether to go or not.
25:25Then they both stopped and then eventually they went.
25:27And if Eddie Hemings hit the stumps, he was certainly out.
25:31It turned out a bit of luck that for England because he should have waited until David Gow got behind
25:37those stumps for a certain run-out.
25:38But that is an unfortunate end.
25:40And in English, three for 96.
25:44Justy comes in now and bowls to Jeff Crowe.
25:48And that's a good shot too by Crowe this time at six.
25:50A very nice elegant shot played over the square leg boundary there.
25:55That one pitched around that net stump and nicely dispatched away.
25:59Hemings to Cairns.
26:03That's hit away over the top.
26:04That'll be six, yes.
26:07No, it wasn't.
26:08It actually hit the top of the fence there, I think.
26:11In any event, it was signaled four.
26:12So it didn't clear the fence.
26:16There he goes again.
26:17And that's a big six.
26:18He's hit that right from the knee to the back.
26:20And that's gone all 12 rows back.
26:24Six to square leg there by Cairns.
26:27And he keeps doing that.
26:31Phyllis might have to have second thoughts about spinning just while he's there.
26:38He's hit that one straight down the ground.
26:40And that's going to bounce.
26:41No, it didn't.
26:42He hit the fence.
26:43Well, that's a very long boundary down there.
26:46And I think it might tell us all that not only has he got a good bat, he's also strong.
26:52I think that probably, Tony, is the longest boundary in any cricket field in the world.
26:55That one, Nelly.
26:56And he hit it on the full and came back.
26:59Saved Mark's the champ.
27:01Saved him going down, picking it up.
27:04Big appeal there for LBW.
27:06A pretty confident one to Hemmings was almost down on his knees.
27:10And as the appeal was going on, everyone was watching the umpire.
27:14The ball popped away on the next side and they were able to take single.
27:19It's down the ground and it might be out.
27:21Hemmings is going to catch this.
27:22No, he's not.
27:23The England fielding has been atrocious.
27:27They have now dropped three catches in the deep, all of which should have been comfortably taken.
27:33But if he manages to face 150 balls, I feel sure that he'll be up there amongst the leaders, if
27:38not the leader.
27:43That's six.
27:44That's a mighty six.
27:45And that might even hit the, uh, Benson Hedges international player of the year.
27:49Far down.
27:50No, it's just missed him.
27:51It was a big six though.
27:55So 16 running is coming off this over from Jesty.
27:59And that also brings up the 150.
28:02Three for one, five, four.
28:05To Crow.
28:08That's a good shot.
28:11Played over the top there and, uh, down towards the swelling boundary again.
28:15The New Zealand is going pretty well at the moment.
28:23Both of them, uh, just had a few problems.
28:26Injury, bowling at a reduced pace to Jeff Crowe, who scored his 50 off to 64 balls and in 81
28:34minutes.
28:36And a very valuable knock it was.
28:37Although Crowe was dropped when he was seven, sweeping Hemmings to his square leg where he was put down by
28:43Alan Lamb.
28:44A stifled appeal for LBW of that last ball.
28:46A little bit of bat on it, I felt.
28:49And that one's up in the air.
28:51Bob Willis getting under it.
28:52And he's taken the catch.
28:54So, they're going to have their problems taking outfield catches.
28:58But on that occasion, Bob Willis very safe.
29:01And Jeff Crowe is out for exactly 50.
29:05So, at long last, a catch is taken.
29:08Three catches dropped by Marks, Hemmings, and Lamb.
29:11And big Bob Willis here making no mistake about that.
29:14Taking a high overhead mark as Crowe departs.
29:16Having tried to turn that ball on the leg side.
29:18Probably got a leading edge.
29:20So, he's out.
29:21Four for one, six, six.
29:25Both of them to Lance Cairns.
29:27Cairns once again.
29:29Lofting away on the onside.
29:30This time it's David Gower underneath it.
29:32And he accepts the chance.
29:35And New Zealand losing two wickets in quick succession.
29:41As England hit back.
29:45After a partnership of 70 between Crowe and Cairns.
29:48We see both batsmen dismissed in a very short space of time.
29:52And the significant part about this is that it's one of England's best fieldsmen out there at deep mid wicket.
29:57David Gower.
29:58Put there for that special Lance Cairns shot.
30:01So many runs of Lance Cairns has come from that shot.
30:04He's out now.
30:05And the total five, 166.
30:08At the moment Hadley has six runs to his credit.
30:12Bouncer there from Botham.
30:15And I don't think that it feels no square leg.
30:20Picked that one up at all.
30:21It's Eddie Hemmings.
30:23The ball went in the air.
30:30Hadley gives himself a bit of room there.
30:32Smashes that one away through the offside.
30:35And the run rate required at the moment is 8.15.
30:39So that's pretty high.
30:43That's a good hit.
30:46Still going.
30:47What a magnificent blow that was.
30:54Hadley is playing this very well at the moment.
30:58Jackman to Hadley.
31:00Shout.
31:01But they're through for a single.
31:04Wait for the umpire's decision.
31:05There was a bat on the pad.
31:07Extra run to Richard Hadley.
31:09While Willis is the bowler now.
31:10Richard Hadley taking strike.
31:15Oh, that's a shout for Corpy Heine.
31:18It's called a wide.
31:19And boy, the crowd goes mad.
31:20That's the first one that's been called.
31:22There's been four or five bounces bowled today.
31:24And umpire French rightly calling that a wide
31:28in the vital stage of the match.
31:30Good decision.
31:31Good courageous decision, Bill.
31:33There's been several deliveries gone down that league side.
31:36But this stage of the game, a real critical call.
31:39That, not only the one run,
31:41but the fact that New Zealand get an extra ball to score from.
31:45And every ball turn at this stage is vital.
31:50Look at the strain on Hadley's face there.
31:52Willis straining for that extra yard of pace.
31:56Oh, and he's got him away.
31:57And that's four.
31:58Or is it?
31:59It's Randall diving in.
32:00That's four.
32:00Yes.
32:01And that's a vital one.
32:03Randall desperate there at deep point.
32:05Through himself.
32:06Courageous effort.
32:07The English fans are stunned, as we all are, by this onslaught by New Zealand.
32:16Deep breath also.
32:17Why not?
32:22And it's up here.
32:23It's Tabaret.
32:23He has a look.
32:24He throws the head up.
32:25He's not looking all that good, but he's getting there.
32:27He doesn't get there.
32:28Not enough desperation, Chris Tabaret.
32:30Bob Willis drops his head in a scamper through for three runs.
32:34Can you believe this?
32:35The line being tamed.
32:37The outfield has been ordinary, to say the least.
32:4216 runs from this over, Bill, and that was a catch that should have at least gone to hand.
32:48Chris Tabaret searching for it, looking for it in the air, and then actually pulling out of it at the
32:53end.
32:53It wasn't a desperate enough cricket we saw from Derek Randall, the previous boy who really went after it.
32:58But Tabaret was prepared to look at it, just getting away from it at the end.
33:05I can't believe that an England team made up of professional cricketers have wilted under so much pressure.
33:11These people play cricket day in, day out for six months of the year, for 12 months of the year
33:15when they're on tour,
33:16and they're wilting under this pressure.
33:19It's in the air.
33:19There's a man out there.
33:20This is a catch that could be taken.
33:22Yes!
33:24Hadley, the parts are still a notch for 79.
33:29287 for six.
33:30The angry supporters come alive.
33:32Bob Ross is unmoved.
33:35That's a catch under pressure.
33:36It was straight down his throat, but at least he took it.
33:39We noticed that Richard Hadley didn't give that the full flourish.
33:42He was perhaps looking to just chip it.
33:44But the boundaries square it to Adelaide are a bit short.
33:48And the catch went straight down the throat.
33:50And applause for Richard Hadley as he goes back towards the Pavilion area.
33:55The new batsman would be Warren Lees.
34:00Howarth.
34:02Turner.
34:05Probably frightened to move.
34:06Grew to their seats.
34:07Don't move, chaps.
34:08That's what they're saying.
34:09Six for 288.
34:11Coney on 39.
34:12Lee's yet to score.
34:15The field in now.
34:17Bob Willis marshalling his troops for the last onslaught.
34:20Three on the offside in the side of the circle.
34:22Three on the onside.
34:23The third man a deep fine length.
34:26Deflection's the name of the game for Jeremy Coney.
34:37He's got it away.
34:38It's a good hit.
34:39Over the infield.
34:40It's...
34:41Heming's giving chase.
34:42It's two runs.
34:44Tension's absolutely unbelievable.
34:47I think the crowd are stunned.
34:49Side chasing 296.
34:51Best effort performance by Australia.
34:53Our two records going to be broken in one day.
34:57Bob Willis inducing Jeremy Coney into playing that shot then.
35:00He's got three men in on both sides of the wicket.
35:03Trying to cut the single.
35:04Big Bob knows now that singles are the answer.
35:07Usually they can just push away.
35:09The one on the offside try and pick up those singles.
35:12He's trying to restrict them.
35:13Trying to induce them to go to the hit.
35:15The big hit.
35:16Which may lead to their downfall.
35:19Good shot.
35:19That's found the gap.
35:21Look at Trevor jesting.
35:23He's giving his all.
35:24Coming around.
35:24They're through for two.
35:25They come back for three.
35:27That puts Warren Lees on strike.
35:31290.
35:35Three for six.
35:37New Zealand supporters, they can't believe it.
35:39I'm sure Jeffrey Howarth can it also.
35:41He's right in the mood.
35:42He's got his head down.
35:43Turner's got a smirk on his face.
35:44A nervous one.
35:47One of the all-time great victories this will be.
35:50Warren Lees just inquiring from the umpire.
35:53The balls are there.
35:55Bob Willis is charging in.
35:56Warren Lees just taking block.
35:58Big Bob.
35:59He's lost his cool.
36:01He's entranced in coming in, trying to restrict the runs.
36:03Warren Lees was asking the umpire for block.
36:06Facing up.
36:07Now he's taken it.
36:09Have a look round.
36:11Just take his time.
36:13Four runs for New Zealand.
36:14Victory.
36:15Ten balls remaining.
36:16Four wickets in hand.
36:17England to win.
36:18They'd have to bowl them out.
36:21Bob Willis.
36:22Fleet Street sitting on his shoulder.
36:25This team's in.
36:29They go for one.
36:30Warren Lees charging down in this field by Lamb.
36:33The New Zealanders go mad.
36:34Bob Willis bows his head.
36:36England are on their knees.
36:37And what a victory this will be.
36:40What a performance.
36:43Straight down to mid off.
36:45Alan Lamb looked as though he had a chance for a run out.
36:47Just took his eyes off and got a bit of a bad bounce there.
36:50One that kicked on him.
36:52Tremendous team performance to date.
36:54Three runs.
36:55Eight deliveries.
36:55Four wickets in hand.
37:02Englishman charging him.
37:03We've got the 2-8.
37:08That's a good hit.
37:09That'll be it.
37:10Down the ground.
37:11There's room for one.
37:12Cabaret chasing.
37:14Two.
37:16Three.
37:17Four.
37:18New Zealand.
37:19Three.
37:19And there's one.
37:19Look at Jeremy Coney.
37:20Look at the New Zealand dressing room.
37:22We wind up one of the all-time great performances.
37:24Jeremy Coney.
37:25Substitute for Eker.
37:26He could size the selection.
37:28But he's played superbly for his team.
37:30The crowd have gone mad at the Adelaide Oval.
37:33The New Zealanders standing.
37:34The crowd waving.
37:36And what a performance.
37:37Six for 2.97.
37:41Astonishing performance by New Zealand.
37:43An equally astonishing one by England, I must say.
37:46Because they didn't play it very well.
37:48Three vital chances went down.
37:49And 74 runs were added by New Zealand from those three misses.
37:54One by Lamb.
37:55The other by Marks.
37:56And the third one by Eddie Hemmings.
37:58A fine performance that from Jeff Crowe.
38:00Lance Cairns hit brilliantly.
38:02Jeremy Coney and Richard Hadley.
38:04A partnership of 121 in 73 minutes.
38:07But what a disaster for those England bowlers.
38:09Bob Willis bowled well, I thought.
38:11So too, Robin Jackman.
38:12But the other four were absolutely thrashed out there by those excellent partnerships from the New Zealand batsmen.
38:19So a tremendous performance by New Zealand.
38:22An extraordinary one by England.
38:24Their ground fielding was very poor.
38:26I thought their tactical sense wasn't all that good.
38:28And those three catches were absolute disasters.
38:31In the presentation area now, there will be one happy captain.
38:34One disconsolate captain.
38:36To put the very mildest touch to it.
38:38And Tony Gregg.
38:40Thank you, Richie.
38:40Well, once again, $5,000 allocated by the Australian Cricket Board.
38:43Out of there, Benson Hedges Kitty and Geoff Houth.
38:45You're quite right in saying he looked very happy.
38:47He was here two minutes after the game ended.
38:50Your cheque for $3,000.
38:51Is that the best win you've ever been involved in with one day cricket for New Zealand?
38:55I think so, yes, Tony.
38:56With sort of 200 and nearly 300 runs to get, I think.
39:00To get that total batting second, it takes a pretty mighty effort.
39:03And all right, we had a bit of luck and a couple of drop catches.
39:06But the teamwork of the batsmen out at the crease was magnificent.
39:10And we got there and I'm very, very happy.
39:13And you brought Jeremy Coney in to replace Bruce Edgar.
39:15And he at the end looked over the moon.
39:17Just for that reason.
39:19No, we had to try something different to try and upset the Englishman.
39:22But he came off well and came through it and steered us home very well.
39:27Congratulations.
39:27A day off now and then the one against Australia on Monday.
39:31Yes, that's another big one.
39:33They're all big from now on in because of the points situation.
39:35But we'll be trying and hopefully we can chalk up another one on Monday.
39:39Congratulations.
39:41Bob, thanks for coming along.
39:42Your cheque for $1,500.
39:44Thank you very much.
39:45Not a great day for England.
39:46With that sort of score, I mean, I think the batsmen did a tremendous job really.
39:49With that sort of score, you should have won the game.
39:52Oh, easily.
39:54The blokes just went out there thinking that there's no way they could win, which was the
39:58worst attitude to have.
39:59We told them about that before we went out there.
40:02Very complacent.
40:04Poor bowling.
40:05Dreadful fielding.
40:06Bad day in the field for us.
40:08Right, we won't elaborate too much.
40:10I suppose you've got to get away here and get them jacked up for tomorrow because that's
40:13a big game for you.
40:14Yes.
40:15I mean, if we win the last two games, we should just scrape in.
40:18Right.
40:19Well, good luck.
40:20Thanks for coming along.
40:21Well, there's also a very important one here, the Man of the Match Award.
40:24And we've got the Benson Hedges Gold Goblet, which goes with the cheque for $500.
40:28And Richard Hadley, welcome.
40:30We've been looking forward to having you down here to collect one of these.
40:33Don't forget the cheque.
40:34I've been waiting a long time to actually be here.
40:35I don't think I've contributed a great deal on the series today.
40:38It's certainly nice to chip in today.
40:40What price did you give yourselves at the start of your innings?
40:44Well, I think we needed to get off to a very good start.
40:47It wasn't that good, really, was it?
40:48No, it wasn't really.
40:48But Geoff putting Lance in the order made one huge difference.
40:52It was there for that reason to really hit the spinners.
40:54And he did that.
40:54And he hit the medium paces.
40:55He got the momentum going.
40:57Crowe did a marvellous job as well.
40:58And then the foundation was laid.
41:00But, you know, it's the first time that I've really got going in this series.
41:03And I enjoyed it.
41:04But I'm very, very exhausted, I can assure you.
41:07Well, well played today.
41:07And we'll bowl as well.
41:08Thank you very much.
41:09Right.
41:09Well, that's all from down here.
41:10Back to you, Richie.
41:12Well, I was quite right that there'd be one very unhappy captain down there.
41:15I'm not surprised that Bob Willis looked and sounded exactly as he did.
41:20But he has to lift his team tonight because they play Australia here at the Adelaide Oval
41:24in the second match of this triple header over the Australia Day weekend.
41:27They play here tomorrow.
41:29And then Australia play New Zealand on Monday.
41:31But tomorrow is essential, as far as England are concerned, that a victory comes their way.
41:34So we look forward to having you with the nine commentary team tomorrow for the second of these games.
41:40Today, an absolute thriller with England staying on six points.
41:44New Zealand going to eight to join the Australians.
41:47And those two teams have a game in hand of England.
41:50Good night for the moment from nine's commentary team.
41:53And we look forward to having you with us tomorrow.
41:54Good night.
41:55Good night.
42:00Hello.
42:01Good night.
42:05Say hi to the familiar 나.
