00:15Welcome back to our review of the Test Match Series between Australia and South Africa.
00:19Now, let's just remind you of exactly what you've seen so far and how the Test Series was shaping up.
00:24Australia take an unassailable 2-0 lead in this one, having won the first Test in Adelaide by 246 runs.
00:30They won the second in Melbourne by nine wickets, looking to go one better and whitewash the South Africans at
00:37the SCG.
00:37Well, I can tell you that the Australians won the toss, the third toss in a row and elected to
00:42bat.
00:42Let's just run you through the two team sheets.
00:44They made the one change to the home side.
00:46They brought in the extra spinner, Stuart McGill, another leg spinner.
00:50That meant they were playing two with him alongside Shane Warne.
00:52They left out Andy Bickle.
00:54For the South Africans, well, a bit of controversy involved in the team selection.
00:59They make two changes.
01:00They opted for an extra spinner as well with Nicky Bowyer taking the place of Nanty Hayward.
01:04And Lance Klusner made way for the debutant all-rounder Justin Ontong.
01:09Now, the problem was the selection dilemma was the fact that it was all to do with quotas.
01:14Jacques Rudolph looked likely to play.
01:16Being a white player, though, he was replaced because of this quotas,
01:19overruled by the president of the UCB of South Africa, Percy Son.
01:23So, dilemmas for them in selection.
01:25Would it rub off on the pitch, though?
01:27We'll find out as we join the Australian first innings.
01:35Oh, dear, oh, dear.
01:37What a good shot that was.
01:40Hayden in tremendous form.
01:46Oh, that's pulled away.
01:48He's so strong in that area.
01:50Matthew Hayden continuing to play some wonderful shots in Test Match Cricket.
01:59Oh, and Short again.
02:01He's got that through that offside as well.
02:04That's gone to the boundary.
02:08Oh, what a shot.
02:19That one's over the top.
02:20A little bit of width from Justin Langer.
02:23He's swung the bet hard enough.
02:25It brings up the 50 partnership.
02:32That will be four more.
02:34Every time Alan Donalds just dropped fractionally short, Matthew Hayden has picked him off and picked him off all the
02:41way to the boundary.
02:46Oh, he's gone for that.
02:48That's a big hit.
02:49Hitting straight down the ground.
02:50It's a long, long hit.
02:52It's gone all the way, I think.
02:54That's a good strike by Justin Langer.
02:56Good use of the feet.
03:00Langer's on 49.
03:02Callis around the wicket.
03:06Well, he's had a hit go at that one.
03:07Over the top, she goes.
03:08That's the way to get to your half century.
03:11Justin Langer not wasting any time.
03:13It's interesting, isn't it?
03:15He fiddled around for a long time while he was out there.
03:18Here he is on 49.
03:20And he's hit the first ball straight over the top of the offside field.
03:29That's well played.
03:30On to the back foot again.
03:32Boy, is he playing that shot magnanimously.
03:35That brings up his half century.
03:37So both these batsmen now have got past 50.
03:44He's got that.
03:54He's got that beautiful.
03:57A very, very good strike.
04:02I feel credit to the batsman.
04:04In superb form and it's a joy to watch.
04:10Sweeps and he's dropped in.
04:12Well, there you go.
04:15Henderson does the job.
04:16At square leg drops a straight forward catch.
04:20That's the over bowl.
04:22It's none for 168.
04:23And you cannot afford to drop Matthew Hayden on 68 at this level.
04:32Oh, copped that.
04:33He threw it wide.
04:34It was a hard foul.
04:35You don't run for those.
04:43There it is.
04:4512 test hundreds.
04:47Justin Langer.
05:08Australia won the toss.
05:10And they've just reached 200 yet again.
05:12And I'm talking about the openers.
05:14Yes, Langer and Hayden.
05:16Langer's 102 not out.
05:17Hayden is 94 not out.
05:19And, well, they just continue this wonderful run they're having.
05:27Oh, and I think there was a bat in that.
05:29I think that was a chance.
05:30Nicky Boy has found the outside edge.
05:32And Langer has been put down.
05:34So both of them now have given a chance.
05:38Down the wicket he goes.
05:39That's it.
05:40Straight down the ground.
05:41Over the top.
05:41One bounce for four.
05:43Matthew Hayden has done it again.
05:46Five centuries in 2001.
05:48And here he is now at the start of the new year.
05:50Chalking up one absolutely instantly.
05:53Seven test match hundreds.
05:55Three against South Africa.
05:56Three in successive test matches.
05:59The first year at the SCG.
06:04Oh, he's gone.
06:05Well, we talked about not producing chances.
06:08And sure enough, Sean Pollock creates a chance,
06:11which is greatly accepted.
06:13First hit by Jacques Callas.
06:15Matthew Hayden disappears after another fine innings for 105.
06:25It was a slower ball from Pollock.
06:27Once again, it was too short and too wide.
06:30And it does look in good touch to me, Ricky Ponte.
06:38Oh, that's a superb shot.
06:40It wasn't that short from Justin Langer, but he's picked the gap.
06:44There was a sweeper out there who I think originally went the wrong way,
06:47but it was so well timed.
06:55Oh, there's got to be a chance to be hit, surely.
06:57That's close.
06:59I think it would be very close, but I think it had to be a direct hit.
07:02Ponte is very, very quick.
07:04It was a dicey call by Langer.
07:07The throw was good, but it had to be a direct hit.
07:09They're not sure.
07:11Boucher said, I am not sure.
07:12It's close.
07:13And it is close, but I think you'll find Ponte maybe just home.
07:18Where is he?
07:20He's gone.
07:24He's got it this time, surely.
07:26That's how he walks.
07:27That's a good record.
07:28That's very well bowled, Nicky Boyer.
07:30He troubled him there two balls previous.
07:32This time he gets him.
07:34That's a big record for South Africa.
07:38He's given himself an extra metre, Neil McKenzie.
07:41The defensive shot again, and he was onto it.
07:45Justin Langer.
07:46Very fine innings of 126.
07:52Oh, that's not good bowling, but it's beautifully played.
07:56That'll be four.
07:56Mark Waugh at his best off his pads.
08:00Probably puts his hands on his heads as well he might.
08:03He's going to a great onside player in Mark Waugh.
08:11Oh, great shot.
08:12Cover drive for Ford.
08:16Yes, that's as good a shot as he's played through that area for a while.
08:26Oh, look at that.
08:27Oh, what a shot.
08:28Short outside off stump and straight to the boundary.
08:37He's got him.
08:38That's the record they needed.
08:39The second new ball.
08:40Steve Waugh bowled through the gate.
08:43Two records for Pollock.
08:44And that's a big record close to Stumps on the first day.
08:47Steve Waugh playing for it.
08:48Maybe an inside edge.
08:49That's very well bowled.
08:51That's a big boost for the South African skipper.
08:53And a big record.
08:56Captain to captain.
08:57And this time Sean Pollock wins by pitching the ball up.
09:00Pitching up and bowling straight to Steve Waugh.
09:02Oh, he's got him.
09:08He's out.
09:09That's out, surely.
09:10That's a big record.
09:11They brought in the bat pad.
09:13Mark Waugh went for the slash outside the off stump.
09:15Donald strikes.
09:16And that is a very big record.
09:19So, that's a wicket just the time he gets in for the 10th time.
09:23The dying moments of the first day's play.
09:26Mark Waugh slashes the bat pad come in.
09:28Moved away slightly.
09:29Boucher takes the catch.
09:31He's gone for 19.
09:40There he goes.
09:42He's a good cricketer.
09:43Gets one short.
09:45He pulls it away for four.
09:49That's a beautiful strike.
09:52Lovely square drive from Daniel Martin.
10:03The outfield is very, very fast.
10:06You get full value for your shots here at the SCG.
10:10It's not a giant size ground.
10:17And he's nicked there.
10:18And Boucher's moved.
10:19And got it.
10:20Gilchrist, a little rush of blood.
10:22Overconfidence once again.
10:24And he departs.
10:25Callis, has he turned his day around Mark Taylor?
10:29Let's hope for South Africa, he certainly has.
10:31He's into his 20th over.
10:33He's finally got his first wicket.
10:35It was, as you say in Healy, a rush shot.
10:37It was a wide one.
10:38Adam Gilchrist, as he always does, threw everything at it.
10:46That's exactly where Shane Warne goes.
10:54And that's four.
10:57That's a beautiful cover drive.
11:05Touch from Warne.
11:09I think it's four.
11:11It's all happening at the centre-foot ground.
11:13The crowd loving Shane Warne.
11:15Oh, that's a good queen hit.
11:17That could go all the way.
11:18That is a big hit.
11:20Brings up the 50 partnership.
11:22Oh, and they rub it on the Doug Walters hill.
11:24You hear the crack of the bat on leather then.
11:26That was well struck.
11:31Oh, it doesn't beat mid-off.
11:33It does.
11:33Oh, it's all happening.
11:35They bring up his 50 for Damien Martin.
11:37He's having a golden summer.
11:38Wasn't off the middle of the bat.
11:39He still goes for four.
11:42He's a good cricketer.
11:49Got him.
11:50Gone for the full shot, Shane Warne.
11:52Colt gets three.
11:53But a good knock from Warne.
11:54Good entertainment.
11:55Intelligent cricket.
12:02Well, this time he's got the reverse sweep and got it well.
12:17Oh, good shot.
12:18That's going off the back foot.
12:21Coming down the hill.
12:22And that's four.
12:29And he's gone thumped.
12:31And it's a good long hit.
12:33A couple of bounces in the way.
12:34That's a good shot.
12:39Oh, it's got through him, has it?
12:41It's bowled him.
12:42Yes, the keeper jumped up.
12:43He couldn't see it for a moment.
12:45So he's got him.
12:46A little bit of turn there as well.
12:47So that's a bad one for McGillman Warne.
12:49But that's the end of a good innings from Brett Lee.
12:52He's out for 29.
12:59Well, he's done it again, man.
13:00He's got away for four again.
13:03Well, that's another one on the offside that's gone for four.
13:09He steered it away.
13:10That's it.
13:11That's a great hundred.
13:12It's payback time as far as Damien Martin is concerned.
13:16It was eight years ago that the South Africans brought his test career to an end temporarily.
13:23This is his fourth Test 100, second against South Africa, both this summer.
13:27First at the SCG and his first in 2002.
13:35That's the area.
13:36It's in the air.
13:37It has gone past him for four.
13:40Yes, he seemed to me to be in no man's land.
13:43It's a pretty good hit for a one-armed bandit out there, batting at number 10.
13:52Well, this is in the air.
13:53Someone's got to catch it, surely.
13:57Well, it's come down right in the centre of three of them.
14:00I would have thought the bowler was probably best place to get back to catch that one.
14:05Certainly John Callis, who was pretty deep,
14:07ended up coming in a long way,
14:10but never really quite made it.
14:16Well, it's in the air as well,
14:17and they're circling underneath it again.
14:19Will they catch it?
14:20Oh, yes, at last they've got one.
14:22And who should it be other than Henderson?
14:25He's seen them disappear into the air
14:27and drop between fieldsmen.
14:30However, he was there to take the catch this time.
14:33And so the end of Stuart McGill.
14:38Over the top, and that's four, or is it going to be six?
14:42Just short.
14:50He's hit that straight to the fieldsman at square leg.
14:54Well, he's taking that, no trouble at all.
14:58McKenzie's a pretty good fieldsman, actually.
15:00He took that.
15:01It was hit at him like a rocket,
15:03standing right alongside the umpire,
15:05and he just took it without even moving it.
15:08Well, Damien Martin is the last man in it.
15:13Well, yes, another massive first innings total
15:15for the Australians, 554.
15:19Three men making it into three figures,
15:21and ten making it into double figures.
15:24Everyone putting their two penniff forth with the bat,
15:27but Langer and Hayden at the top of the order.
15:29Yet another double century stand,
15:30219 they put on for the first wicket,
15:32and then further down, Damien Martin with 117.
15:36Also a very useful knock indeed.
15:39Well, the bowling figures are very messy, to say the least.
15:42One for 119 for Donald.
15:44The captain tried to do his job from 37 overs,
15:46three for 109.
15:47They weren't bad, but Jacques Callis,
15:49oof, one for 129 from 22.
15:51He went to all parts of the ground.
15:53Claude Henderson similarly went to all parts of the ground.
15:56No joy for him, though, 112 coming off his bowling.
15:59Vicky Bowyer answered the SOS call, though,
16:01from his captain and from the selectors,
16:03with four for 63, of just over 25 overs.
16:07So, another massive tally.
16:09Is this why they're the best side in the world,
16:11the fact that Australia always post a big first innings total?
16:15Well, they seem to more often than not,
16:16and it takes a pretty good bowling line-up
16:18to work your way through their order.
16:20So, we're seeing now Justin Langer.
16:22Another 100 from him.
16:23What a rich vein of form.
16:25If Hayden doesn't get runs, Langer will,
16:27and sometimes they both get them.
16:29And when they both do,
16:30it just takes the pressure off for everyone else.
16:32Yeah, I mean, the lower order, middle order,
16:33can come in and just enjoy themselves.
16:35They can play with freedom.
16:36They can go for their shots.
16:38And to say, we're seeing here,
16:38Justin Langer,
16:39that's mainly a back foot player,
16:41and gives it a clout once you give him
16:44a bit of width outside off stump.
16:45We've talked a couple of times about his partner Hayden,
16:49or at least his opening partner Hayden,
16:52but Justin Langer,
16:54he's another one that's not afraid to go for his shots.
16:57No, you can see there,
16:58he's a very passionate man,
16:59a very motivated cricket.
17:01I think there's a kiss to his wife in the stands.
17:03Well, I hope it is, anyway.
17:05But, no, he'll be delighted with that.
17:07I mean, we said before,
17:07his test career was on the line last summer,
17:09when they toured England,
17:10and he's given an opportunity,
17:12and he's taken it with both hands.
17:14And, I'd say,
17:15he and Matthew Hayden
17:16have set Australia up once again here,
17:18and 550 is a huge score.
17:21Certainly, Oz,
17:22here's evidence of the shots
17:24that Hayden was playing
17:25alongside Langer at the same time.
17:27The difference in the styles,
17:29I mean, they're both left-handed batsmen,
17:30and they both can play all sorts of shots,
17:32but is there vast differences in the technique,
17:35do you think?
17:36There's differences in their build,
17:37one six foot five,
17:38and 15 and a half stone,
17:39and the other's sort of five foot ten,
17:41so they do play differently.
17:42Hayden is mainly a front foot player,
17:44although, as you see here,
17:45he's good off the back foot as well.
17:47If you're comparing the two innings,
17:48I'd say Hayden's was the better hundred.
17:49You can see the shots were more solid.
17:51Justin Langer's hundred
17:52is a good,
17:53well, you don't score many bad hundreds,
17:55but a lot of it was sort of
17:56through the gully area,
17:57which is where he's strong,
17:58sort of slashing at the ball
17:59if it's outside or stump.
18:01Matthew Hayden looks more compact player,
18:03plays straighter down the wicket,
18:05and, as I say,
18:06he can be pretty chuffed
18:07with what he's achieved as well.
18:08If they continue to go on like this,
18:10then it could be one of the great
18:12Australian opening partnerships,
18:13because they've got a good few years in them yet,
18:14both those players,
18:15but just a quick word on Damien Martin as well,
18:18because he's getting a lot of runs down the order.
18:19Yeah, he's a magnificent player to watch.
18:21I think if we maybe look at Tendulkar
18:23and people like that
18:24and say how elegant they are
18:26and how enjoyable they are,
18:27but Martin's in that category.
18:30He just makes it look all so easy, effortless.
18:32He's almost like a right-handed David Garan,
18:34the way that he goes about his work,
18:36and, as I say,
18:37he's had to wait his time
18:38to get on the Australian side,
18:39and he's showing now
18:40what a capable player he is as well.
18:42Well, South Africans pedalling backwards
18:44in this series, it seems,
18:45because all the time
18:47they were chasing the game
18:48in all the first two tests
18:49and in this first innings as well.
18:52554, huge score by the Australians.
18:54But how would South Africa get on
18:55in their first innings?
18:56We'll find out after the break.
19:19No one at mid-off.
19:24Steve Waugh doing the chasing.
19:27He's not going to make it, is he?
19:29No, I don't think he did.
19:30I think his foot was on the line
19:32as he dragged that Waugh back
19:34and he ran four anyhow.
19:38Oh, he's hit that well.
19:39Onto his toes.
19:41Beginning to look just a little bit more relaxed
19:43as that one goes across
19:45this fast outfield for four.
19:50That's a full toss
19:51and played away.
19:52I don't think McGrath's
19:53going to get to this one.
19:55Four runs.
20:02Oh, he's got him.
20:03He's got him first ball.
20:04What a delivery.
20:05That bounced a little bit.
20:06He was fending at it.
20:08It's gone flying away
20:09into the slipcord.
20:10And that's the end of Kirsten.
20:13McGrath hasn't taken long
20:15to strike in the second spell of ease.
20:17That's the third time in the series.
20:19Here's the delivery.
20:20And straight through to Ponting.
20:22Nicely caught.
20:26Gone and forgotten.
20:29For a moment,
20:29I thought the batsman,
20:31Dippenar,
20:32was looking up at the umpire
20:33to see if there'd been a call.
20:36But there were two noises.
20:37It sounded as though it was edge
20:39back onto the stumps
20:40and Dippenar has gone again.
20:44That's a beauty.
20:45It's come back quite a bit
20:46off the seam
20:47and it wasn't actually
20:48an inside edge.
20:49It actually flicked the back pad
20:50on the way through
20:51to the stumps.
20:55Good shot.
21:05Lovely shot.
21:07Bit of bounce there
21:08and spin
21:10and Gibbs has hit it
21:12quite beautifully.
21:17Cullis is off the mark now.
21:19He's been waiting
21:19for the short one.
21:23It's got him.
21:24He's got a wicket.
21:25Yes.
21:25He's got Cullis.
21:26The girl strikes
21:27and that's a big wicket.
21:28Good spin and bounce.
21:29Good catch.
21:30Good cricket.
21:33Cullis not happy
21:34with the decision again.
21:35He stood there for some time.
21:36Gilchrist spontaneous.
21:38But have a look
21:38at this delivery.
21:39Speared into leg stump.
21:41Maybe even outside leg stump.
21:44Floats in
21:45and then rips across.
21:47Don't worry about
21:48the new ball
21:48and the new wicket.
21:50In a new innings
21:51and a new year.
21:52Jacques Cullis gone.
21:53A good catch by Gilchrist.
22:02Great shot.
22:03Perfect off drive.
22:06Head still.
22:08Straight through the line.
22:13It's time he's whipped him away
22:15and he plays that shot well.
22:18There's nobody out there
22:19on the onside
22:19so the wicketkeeper
22:20does the chasing.
22:21This is a rare sight.
22:25It's a short run.
22:26That's a good shot.
22:28Gibbs
22:28getting the long hop
22:29as Ian Chappell was saying earlier
22:31on this pitch.
22:32Get some true bounce.
22:34Got to put those
22:34bad balls away
22:35and he did it nicely.
22:38Short.
22:39Good shot.
22:41Very good shot.
22:44It's probably better
22:45than the first one.
22:45It was more controlled.
22:47Placed it superbly.
22:51He's got him.
22:52He's got two.
22:53That's beautifully bowled.
22:54Well caught by Mark Waugh.
22:56Good fight spun away.
22:58Good fight spun away.
22:58That's a big look at it.
22:59That's Gibbs
23:00driving through to Mark Waugh
23:01according to his previous whistle.
23:03McGill's got two.
23:05He's got one pitching outside leg.
23:08This one thrown up outside off.
23:11Herschel Gibbs didn't do a lot wrong.
23:13The ball was there.
23:14Tantalising.
23:15It was thrown up
23:16just for this shot.
23:17It's spun enough though.
23:19Took the outside edge
23:20and took the centre
23:21of Mark Waugh's hands.
23:25Wider on the crease
23:26and Mackenzie has thumped it.
23:35That's a good shot.
23:37That'll help a lot.
23:39We'll leave a few of the nerves.
23:40First boundary
23:41in test cricket.
23:51Got him.
23:52Knocked him over.
23:53Looked to be a toppy
23:55went straight through
23:55Mackenzie.
23:56That's beautiful bowing
23:57by Shane Warne
23:58and all of a sudden
24:00it's five for 93.
24:02Wonderful cricket
24:03by the Australians.
24:04Enormous pressure
24:05by this great leg spinner.
24:06Just too good for Mackenzie.
24:09Yes, he was looking
24:10for one to turn there
24:11and that went straight on.
24:13That was the
24:14over spinner.
24:15Bit of bounce there.
24:20Sweeps.
24:21Gets it fine.
24:21And Grah,
24:22the fieldsman,
24:23won't get it.
24:24So, Mark Boucher
24:25off the mark
24:26with a boundary.
24:31Big shout.
24:32Picks outside of the way.
24:33Give it in.
24:34Riley was back.
24:35Looked to me
24:36it was roundabout
24:37leg stun.
24:41The replay could have been
24:43a top spinner
24:44or a leg spinner.
24:46Australia
24:46right on top.
24:48The early moments
24:49of the third day's play.
24:50Warren dominating.
24:51Where did it pitch?
24:51That's the key.
24:57That's Plum
24:59thanking leg stump.
25:03Tomik driving beautifully.
25:04That's well played.
25:05That's well played.
25:05Left of the half bow.
25:06He hit through the line.
25:09And Grah.
25:12Now she gets her
25:13full way through
25:14the zip cord
25:15with full face
25:16of the bat.
25:20And another one.
25:22Seven wickets.
25:24Hess
25:25taken square
25:26on the offside.
25:28Damien Martin
25:29was never going to drop that.
25:30That was
25:31Pollock playing
25:32well having an
25:33aggressive shot
25:34at a ball
25:35that was just
25:35wide outside
25:36off stump.
25:37Always a chance
25:38they're going to go to hand.
25:40So McGrath
25:41now level
25:42with Malcolm Marshall.
25:43Pretty straightforward
25:43catch there.
25:44You don't drop those
25:45at this level.
25:45Certainly the Australians
25:46don't.
25:50Full toss
25:51and through the covers
25:52for four.
25:53That's well played.
25:54If it's loose
25:56it's got to be punished
25:56and Nicky Boyer
25:58has done just that.
26:04Runs.
26:04So that's what happens.
26:06We've got all these
26:06attacking fieldsmen in.
26:08There's going to be a few
26:10runs around
26:11back for the
26:12and oh he slipped
26:13this is going to be out.
26:14McGrath got him.
26:14Oh that's a tragedy.
26:16That's a tragedy.
26:18Well
26:19it was thrown
26:20to the right end
26:21and there was
26:22a slip down there.
26:27Nicky Boyer
26:27was coming back
26:29and then
26:30he stumbled
26:31and struggled
26:32to get going again.
26:33The throw
26:34was spot on target.
26:35All McGrath
26:36had to do
26:36was drag it down
26:37to the stumps.
26:37This is it.
26:38There we go.
26:39He goes down
26:39and he stumbles again
26:40and there's McGrath
26:41at the stumps
26:42exactly where he should be
26:43and that's the end of that.
26:50Just like he overpitched
26:51and he's got a way
26:52down towards the boundary
26:54and that'll go for four.
26:55That is actually well timed.
27:01and that'll be four more.
27:03And he's doing well
27:04and he's playing the good deliveries
27:07with a nice straight bat.
27:10Oh, that's beautifully taken.
27:13Yes, the batsman walks.
27:15Well, it's Ricky Ponting again.
27:17That was a superb catch.
27:18I'm not sure if it was off
27:20the bat first
27:20or the pad
27:21but it flew low
27:22and quickly
27:24to Ricky Ponting
27:25and he took once again
27:26a superb catch.
27:29Well, it was fast and flat
27:30like we talked about.
27:31Pad, bat,
27:32takes the edge
27:33of the bat.
27:33Voucher didn't quite
27:34get that bat out
27:35in front of that pad
27:36and Ricky Ponting
27:38just amazing.
27:40His summer continues
27:41with the Dukes.
27:44McGill continues
27:45driven
27:46and well driven
27:47by Henderson
27:47over the bowlers
27:48head for four.
27:49Well played.
27:53It's gone again
27:54in the air.
27:55Should be out.
27:55McGrath's under it.
27:56This will be the end.
27:57A wicket for McGill.
27:57He gets three.
27:59That's a fine performance
28:00by all the Australian bowlers.
28:02McGill-Warne-McGrath
28:04have bowled
28:05South Africa out
28:05for 154
28:07on the third morning
28:08of the third
28:09and final test match.
28:10Wonderful cricket.
28:13Well, depressing
28:14may be embarrassing
28:15viewing if you're
28:16a South African fan
28:17because they collapsed
28:17to 154 all out.
28:19None of the batsmen
28:20really getting anything
28:21on the board
28:21apart from Mark Bouch
28:23with 35
28:23and Herschel Gibbs
28:24with 32
28:25but I don't think
28:25they'll be screaming
28:26from the rooftops.
28:28And the reason for that
28:29was because
28:29there was a fine bowling effort
28:31by three bowlers
28:31in particular.
28:32Glenn McGrath
28:33as usual
28:33hitting the deck
28:34with monotonous accuracy.
28:36Three for 35
28:36from his 17.
28:38Stuart McGill
28:39and Shane Warne
28:39though turning
28:40the ball square.
28:41Three for 51
28:41for the man
28:42on his home ground.
28:43Three for 47
28:44for the greatest
28:45ever leg spin bowler
28:46from Victoria,
28:48Shane Warne.
28:49And so the match
28:50situation looked like this.
28:51South Africa
28:51trailed by 400 runs
28:53and Steve Waugh
28:54enforced the follow-on
28:55but could South Africa
28:56do any better?
28:57We'll find out now
28:58as we have a look
28:59at their second innings.
29:03That's well hit.
29:04Happy four.
29:10Oh, he's gone.
29:11Well, he's knocked
29:12the stunt right
29:13out of the ground there.
29:14That was not the sort of sound
29:16that Herschel Gibbs
29:17wanted to hear.
29:22And I mentioned
29:23he might not get
29:23a long ball here
29:24but Lee
29:25he's trying to make
29:25the most of it
29:26in his second over
29:27and I've got a feeling
29:28this is the one
29:29the ball that swings
29:30away again
29:31is that right length
29:32that was nice and full
29:33wide of the crease
29:35just straight and fractionally
29:36and that is a beauty.
29:43That's a good shot.
29:45Outfield really is quick.
29:51Oh, he got him
29:53dropped him
29:53Oh, it was Mark Wart
29:55too
29:55straight to him
29:56at second slip
29:57that's a regulation
29:58catch by his standards
29:59and he's put
30:00Gary Kirsten down
30:04and he gets a short one
30:05he puts that away
30:06for four
30:11He's up to 50
30:12the loss of one wicket
30:17short delivery
30:18and again
30:19down to the boundary
30:19for four
30:21well, one would have to say
30:22that one of the things
30:23that Guter Dipenar
30:24is doing very well
30:25that's getting
30:26the short ball away
30:28for four
30:34and that's well played
30:36through mid wicket
30:37for four
30:43and that one
30:44through the offside
30:44for four
30:46and he just keeps
30:47doing it
30:47that takes him
30:48to 49
30:4911 fours
30:56here they go
30:58it's good running
30:59and that's a very well made 50
31:00under pressure
31:01the young lad
31:02his highest score
31:03of the series
31:10short pitch
31:11and that's 50
31:12for Gary Kirsten
31:13that's well played
31:14his first
31:15in the series
31:16under enormous pressure
31:23hooked away
31:25he was short
31:25and hit that beautifully
31:27he doesn't look
31:28at the clock this way
31:28and if it's there
31:29he'll put it away
31:34well he's hit it
31:35and it's just
31:35gone past Steve
31:36well mind you
31:37that one wasn't
31:38down the next side
31:38that was outside
31:39off stump
31:40he's taken it
31:40from outside
31:41off stump
31:41and hit it
31:42to the mid wicket
31:43boundary for four
31:48catch
31:52well Dipenar
31:53has only himself
31:54to blame this time
31:55he's been out
31:56to some fantastic
31:57catchers
31:59but that
32:00is one
32:01he'll live to
32:03regret
32:03because he
32:04and Kirsten
32:05were pulling
32:06things around
32:07for South Africa
32:07he's got a loose
32:09ball
32:09instead of keeping
32:10it on the ground
32:11he's done what
32:11he's done on
32:12so many occasions
32:13he's hit it
32:14in the air
32:14quite deliberately
32:22there's another
32:23good shot
32:30Kirsten finds
32:31the gap
32:32and that'll just
32:33run away
32:34for four
32:47got him
32:48yes
32:48off the back
32:49of the bat
32:49I think
32:49yes he's given
32:50him
32:51trying to sweep
32:52that's a good wicket
32:53look to me
32:54to be the back
32:55of the bat
32:55trying to sweep
32:56Jack Callis
32:57Gilquist took
32:58the little
32:58top up
32:58that's a big wicket
33:01he made the umpire
33:02give him out
33:03to Jack Callis
33:05this is a sweep
33:06he got
33:06those three
33:07boundaries
33:07from yesterday
33:08at the start
33:09of his innings
33:09yesterday
33:10they were full
33:10tosses though
33:11this time
33:11it spins
33:14and that's a great
33:15catch
33:21that's a good
33:22shot
33:22got to go
33:23for four
33:33well that's
33:34very well
33:34played
33:35that's a lovely
33:36shot
33:44he's in it
33:45through the
33:45covers for four
33:46that's his
33:46hundred
33:47Gary Kirsten
33:48is fighting
33:49back here
33:50at the
33:50Sydney Craig
33:51ground
33:5114 test
33:52hundreds
33:54that equals
33:55the most
33:55for South
33:56Africa
34:01oh there's
34:01that short
34:02one
34:02he plays
34:02it very
34:03well
34:05Hayden
34:05was on the
34:06ground
34:06and it
34:07would have
34:07been quite
34:08close to him
34:08it's a little
34:09short arm
34:10jab shot
34:10four
34:11straight off
34:12the meat
34:12of the bat
34:16well that's
34:16out
34:17caught
34:17he's out
34:18caught
34:18he's closed
34:19the face
34:21try to work
34:22it away
34:22on the onside
34:23I don't think
34:24it held up
34:24really
34:25I just think
34:25he got his
34:26bat there
34:27just a little
34:27early
34:27it was a
34:28front edge
34:28it went
34:29straight to
34:29McGill
34:30and so
34:31McKenzie
34:31is out
34:32Port McGill
34:33bowled
34:34leave
34:34a 38
34:35he can't
34:36believe it
34:42well played
34:45so he's
34:46been trying
34:47to get
34:47one away
34:47there
34:47for a while
34:48now
34:48it's going
34:49to go
34:49all the way
34:49to the
34:49boundary
34:51so
34:51Antong
34:52moves
34:52to five
34:57there it
34:57goes
34:58it's well
34:58played
35:01beautifully
35:01played
35:02off the
35:02back
35:02foot
35:03all
35:03style
35:09it's
35:09full
35:09more
35:09what we're
35:10seeing
35:11is the
35:11strength
35:11of the
35:12game
35:12in two
35:12sessions
35:13and all
35:13of a sudden
35:13they're putting
35:13their hands to
35:14their heads
35:14when they're
35:15driven away
35:21well before
35:24runs the
35:25coming thick
35:25and fast
35:26for South
35:26Africa
35:33that's Gary
35:34Kirsten's
35:34favourite shot
35:35and it brings
35:36up his
35:36150
35:39to 650
35:41plus
35:41in test
35:42cricket
35:44they've shown
35:44on many
35:45occasions
35:45that he can
35:46hang around
35:46for a long
35:47long time
35:52big shout
35:53there from
35:54umpire
35:54Harper
35:55he had a
35:55good long
35:56look
35:56and he's
35:57given
35:57just an
35:58on-tong
35:58out
35:58quicker
35:59delivery
35:59that the
36:00young
36:00man
36:00was trying
36:01to sweep
36:03gets him
36:04on all
36:04around about
36:05off stump
36:06now
36:07the hardest
36:08thing that
36:08Darrell Harper
36:09the umpire
36:10has to decide
36:10is that ball
36:11going straight
36:11on
36:12or was it
36:13turning and
36:13missing off
36:13stump
36:17oh there's
36:18a full
36:18Tyson
36:18it's whacked
36:19away on the
36:19onside
36:20that one's
36:20running
36:20didn't quite
36:21go off the
36:21middle of the
36:22back
36:22but it'll
36:22still get
36:23there
36:29oh he's
36:30dragged it
36:30on
36:30he's
36:30dragged it
36:31on
36:32that's
36:32the end
36:33of Gary
36:33Kirsten
36:34and probably
36:35the end
36:35of South
36:36Africa
36:37what an
36:37innings
36:38he's played
36:38though
36:39McGill
36:40has been
36:41working at
36:42him out
36:42there
36:42into the
36:43rough
36:43and Kirsten
36:45well I
36:45well I can
36:46say is that
36:47he's played
36:47that shot
36:48so well
36:48so often
36:51this is
36:51a South
36:52African
36:53who's
36:53fought back
36:53yesterday
36:55introduced
36:55a little
36:56bit of
36:56a little
36:58bit of
36:58fighting
36:58to this
36:59match
37:02oh that's
37:03well driven
37:03that's four
37:04oh good
37:05start
37:05nice on
37:06drive
37:14go on big
37:16neck
37:16that's out
37:17yes there's no doubt about that
37:19that's the end for Boucher
37:20went for the square
37:21so as you can hear it in the
37:23concrete box
37:24the grass strikes
37:28probably just a little
37:30carried away
37:30Mark Boucher
37:31you hear
37:31two beautiful
37:32straight drives
37:33two safe shots
37:34from the front foot
37:35went for the big
37:36back foot drive
37:37and
37:37absolutely
37:39smashed it
37:45oh
37:45over goes the house
37:46beautifully
37:47bowled
37:48spun through the gate
37:49McGill gets three
37:51that's good cricket
37:52by Steve Waugh
37:52particularly by Stuart McGill
37:59catches a cry
37:59but he won't catch that
38:00that's four
38:01that could have been wrong
38:03it's straight through it
38:08bowled him
38:08he's clean bowled him
38:09it looked like a googly
38:11he played there
38:12for the leg spin
38:13thought Henderson
38:14appeared to play
38:15outside that one
38:21down the wicket he goes
38:23and he's hit that one
38:23right in the middle of the
38:24bat
38:24it's way over the top
38:26that's a six
38:27a big six too
38:32oh he's got him
38:33that's out
38:33caught behind
38:34Chorley
38:36well I thought
38:37there was a big noise
38:38there
38:40there was definitely
38:41a noise
38:48and that's 50
38:50for Sean Pollock
38:52very well played
38:59that's over the top
39:01a beautiful strike
39:06wonderful shot
39:19first of all
39:20the six
39:20which was
39:22hit with a great deal
39:23of ease
39:29and that's going to be out
39:39not absolutely certain
39:41that the South African
39:42captain will be
39:43totally delighted about that
39:44I think you can judge
39:47that in the way
39:47he's not just taking
39:49his gloves off
39:49he's ripping them off
39:52well to be fair
39:53to the South Africans
39:53having capitulated
39:54in their first innings
39:55to 154 all out
39:57most of the batsmen
39:58putting up their hand
39:59in the second innings
40:00and saying
40:00yeah I can have a bat
40:01Gary Kirsten
40:02in particular
40:03153 made
40:04the highest
40:04South African score
40:05at the SCG
40:06against Australia
40:08and he goes to
40:09the top of the list
40:10alongside Darryl Cullinan
40:12in the most century
40:13scored
40:13for the pro tiers
40:14Sean Pollock
40:15down the order
40:15made 61
40:16not out
40:16a bit further up
40:17but a deepening
40:18up with 74
40:19but 452
40:21if you're a betting man
40:22I don't think
40:22you would have thought
40:23South Africa
40:23would have got close
40:24to posting a second
40:25innings total
40:26having played the way
40:27they did in the first innings
40:28the bowling figures
40:29for Australia
40:30they all won for 95
40:31in McGrath
40:31but it continued to turn
40:33consequently Shane Warne
40:34and Stuart McGill
40:36picking up
40:36three wickets
40:37and four wickets
40:37respectively
40:38Brett Lee
40:39two for 62
40:40from his 19
40:42and there we go
40:44Australia
40:44set the target
40:45at 53 runs
40:46to clinch this test match
40:48and to clinch the series
40:49as well
40:52in fairness
40:53as I said
40:54South Africa
40:54did actually come out
40:56in the second innings
40:57and bat
40:58as they could bat
40:59yes they did
41:00they showed
41:00what they'd been hoping
41:02to do
41:02from the first test match
41:03in Adelaide
41:04they've failed
41:04pretty miserably
41:06and it's taken some time
41:07coming
41:08the first hundred
41:09by Seth Eckerman
41:10in this series
41:11but it was well worth
41:12the wait
41:12Kirsten before this test match
41:14he'd scored 90 runs
41:15in five innings
41:16at an average of just over 18
41:18his footwork looked
41:19leaden footed
41:20but all of a sudden
41:21got a bit of confidence
41:23got going
41:23and showed what a capable
41:26player he is
41:26and why he's got
41:27such a good career record
41:29typically tenacious
41:30we've brought it up before
41:31he's capable of huge scores
41:32as you'll bear testament
41:34to as well
41:35275 he made
41:36in Durban
41:37against England
41:38what are his strengths
41:39as a batsman
41:40his concentration
41:41I think all good players
41:42when they get in
41:43they make it count
41:44any cricketer can get out
41:46below ten really
41:47I think about 30%
41:48of the times
41:49batsmen are out
41:50they're out for less than ten
41:51so the good players
41:53get their average up
41:54by making sure
41:54that when they do get a hundred
41:55they get a big hundred
41:56they don't throw their enemies away
41:58and they keep batting
41:59at a good tempo
42:00he didn't get carried away
42:01he doesn't try things
42:02to sort of play outside
42:03his limitations
42:05and that's why
42:06he's as effective as he is
42:07in terms of the context
42:08as far as the team
42:09is concerned
42:10I mean is it a case
42:11of too little too late
42:12or have they been
42:13just hopelessly outplayed
42:14by the Australians
42:15they have been outplayed
42:16I think South Africa
42:17are a better side
42:17than they've shown
42:18but there is a big gulf
42:20between the two sides
42:21and alright
42:22he's maybe taken them
42:23this far to
42:24to sort of be able
42:25to relax
42:25and be able to just
42:26play as they want to play
42:27they're under pressure
42:28to try and put on
42:29a decent performance
42:30having been bowled
42:30out of 150
42:32to be bowled out
42:33cheaply again
42:33would have been
42:33very embarrassing
42:34and a dreadful way
42:35to finish the series
42:36obviously they're still
42:37going to lose the test
42:38match
42:39but at least
42:40they've given themselves
42:40a bit of a
42:41a fill up really
42:42they've given themselves
42:43a bit of confidence
42:44going into the one day
42:45series and hopefully
42:46the test series
42:46in South Africa
42:47in a month or so's time
42:49but they've still got
42:50a lot of damage to repair
42:51well you must have seen
42:52this game
42:52Angus
42:53because indeed
42:53they were
42:54going to lose
42:54this test match
42:5553 was the target
42:56for the Aussies
42:57and when you've got
42:58the likes of
42:59Justin Langer
43:00and Matthew Hayden
43:00coming in
43:01in the kind of form
43:02that they're in
43:02there was never going
43:03to be too many problems
43:04getting to that total
43:05they did it
43:06unscathed
43:07they didn't lose
43:08a single wicket
43:09they did it
43:10in ten overs
43:11and there we go
43:12all finished
43:13Australia won
43:14by the ten wickets
43:14that won the series
43:153-0
43:16and it was the first
43:17Australian whitewash
43:18over South Africa
43:19in 70 years
43:20indeed since
43:21Bill Wolfels
43:22Australia
43:24won the series
43:255-0
43:25in 1931
43:281932
43:30so a great effort
43:31that by the Aussies
43:31proving once again
43:33why they're the
43:33number one side
43:34in the world
43:35I don't think
43:36after seeing them
43:37perform over those
43:37three test matches
43:38there's too much
43:39doubt about that
43:39no I think
43:41there was a lot
43:42of positive talk
43:42from South Africa
43:43before the series
43:43started
43:44maybe they slightly
43:45overestimated
43:46their chances
43:47Australia are
43:48a magnificent outfit
43:49they seem to be
43:50getting better and better
43:51and when they play
43:51like they've played
43:52over the last three
43:53test matches
43:53they're very hard
43:54to live with
43:55and South Africa
43:56they might be the
43:57second best side
43:58in the world
43:58I don't know
43:59England might sort of
43:59disagree with that
44:00like Pakistan and India
44:01but we've still got
44:03a lot of way to go
44:04if we're going to
44:04compete with Australia
44:05because they are
44:07taking cricket to
44:08a higher level
44:09than I think any of us
44:10have seen before
44:11and it's up to us
44:12now to raise the
44:13standard of our games
44:14we can't expect them
44:15to drop theirs
44:16we've got to make sure
44:17that we try and play
44:18better than we all
44:19currently are at this
44:19moment in time
44:20well it was apt that
44:21the winning runs came
44:22an unbroken partnership
44:24between Justin Langer
44:25and Matthew Hayden
44:26because they shared the
44:26man of the match award
44:27the man of the series
44:28went to Matthew Hayden
44:29for his three consecutive
44:30test match centuries
44:31131-138-105-429 runs
44:35in the series
44:36and another one to remember
44:37for him
44:37yeah it's brilliant
44:38I mean Langer scored
44:39366 runs
44:40Damian Martin scored
44:42299 runs
44:43averaging 149
44:44so there's three
44:45Australian batsmen
44:46there who scored more
44:47runs than any
44:47South African
44:48and that in some way
44:49sort of tells the story
44:50of why Australia
44:51have won this series
44:52so comfortably
44:52also two of their
44:54bowlers
44:54Warne and McGrath
44:56shared 31 wickets
44:56between the two of them
44:57and I suppose
44:58if you're looking at
44:59five players
45:00who've dominated
45:00the test series
45:01it's those five
45:01but Matthew Hayden
45:03quite rightly
45:03won the man of the series
45:04it's his runs
45:06at the top of the
45:07Australian Indians
45:07that has been
45:08very influential
45:09and it's been a
45:10fascinating series
45:11to watch too
45:12my thanks to Angus
45:13for coming in
45:13and reviewing the series
45:14with me
45:15but Australia
45:16starting 2002
45:17as they started 2001
45:19this time
45:19as the official
45:20world test champions
45:21we'll see you soon
45:22bye bye
45:28you say the words
45:31when I will come
45:34invincible
45:35yeah
45:37we're about to do
45:39we're about to do
45:40we're one
45:42invincible
45:44I am
45:47you are
45:48we're one
45:51you say the words
45:54when I will come
45:56we're invincible
45:58yeah
46:00we're about to do
46:02we're about to do
46:03we're one
46:04we're invincible
46:07yeah
