00:00Man, I got to tell you, do you like the landscape right now of college football and where it is
00:04with NIL and with the transfer portal?
00:07Do you like it right now?
00:09Hell no, I don't.
00:10I'm like Nick Saban.
00:12I wouldn't be a part of this today.
00:14I look at it this way.
00:18You know, they need to do something.
00:20They need to do it in a damn hurry.
00:22I understand the president got involved.
00:24They called the commission.
00:25Congress needs to get involved.
00:26They need to get a setter that we can live by to allow us to save this game.
00:32And we're not going to be able to do it unless they do that.
00:36You know, when we drafted Dan, when you went into the league, you were with that team at least three
00:41years before you became a free agent.
00:43These kids jump around all the time now.
00:45Remember when the NCAA used to be cap and gown?
00:48They talked about academics, getting an education.
00:50I have no one ever mentioned one word about eligibility anymore.
00:54They get these guys going to the portal, what's your eligibility?
00:58No one ever asked that.
01:00And it's a damn disdain.
01:02Everybody goes to school online.
01:04You don't know who's doing the work for them online.
01:06Yeah, it's just become a farce.
01:10Plus, the fact that Oklahoma is a school that sits in a state of three and a half million people.
01:20You think Texas and five million people can raise more money, A&M, in Texas than Oklahoma?
01:26Hell, yeah, they can.
01:27And if it's going to come down to that, who can raise the most money and have the most money,
01:33then we're not going to be able to compete.
01:35A lot of schools are not going to be able to compete.
01:37It amazes me that certain schools are still going to compete because they face the same situation as we do.
01:44Hey, Coach, do you think college football needs a commissioner type and they need to get rid of the NCAA?
01:50Do you think there has to be one central head?
01:53Or do you think, again, the NCAA still has a place in college sports?
01:58What does the NCAA do for them?
02:01Nothing.
02:03That's what I say.
02:04The NCAA means nothing anymore.
02:06And remember, the NCAA tell us we're going to play two games a year and we're making a regional TV
02:12every once in a while.
02:13We sued them in 1981, University of Oklahoma in Georgia, and we all went all the way to the Supreme
02:19Court and we won it.
02:20We were able then to have Division I, II, and III be able to negotiate their own TV contracts.
02:27In other words, we could play on TV every week and negotiate with our own networks and divide among the
02:38schools what the network, the league got.
02:40And it was so much better than what the NCAA had.
02:45But the NCAA, that was back when Walter Byers controlled it.
02:49And, you know, we were all kind of strangled at that time, so we had to go on with what
02:56they said.
02:56You know, I don't even know why you even need an investigative body with the NCAA anymore because when you're
03:06giving money in NIL, all these kids, NIL means now it's legal.
03:12And it's a totally different game, and I don't want to be a part of it.
03:18Hey, Coach, let me ask you this.
03:20Do you believe in paying players?
03:23In your opinion, like back in the day, did you believe in paying players?
03:28We couldn't.
03:29But back in the day, we didn't pay players.
03:33I didn't think we could go out and offer an inducement to get a kid to come to your school.
03:38I told them they had the opportunity to win national championships.
03:41I'll surround them with nothing good players.
03:43They could win the Heismans and the Lombardies and things like that, and we'll go to bowl games, which we
03:48did.
03:49But if a kid got in trouble and needed help, I'm going to help him.
03:53I didn't give a damn what the NCAA rules were.
03:55When I needed to get a kid home for a funeral or whatever, I'm going to do that.
03:59But the NCAA didn't allow that.
04:01But most coaches did.
04:03I hope to hell they did because that's what I did.
04:07And it never bothered me.
04:09They didn't lose any sleep over it.
04:10But as far as offering an inducement to players, we didn't do that.
04:14Oklahoma didn't do that.
04:15Certain schools did.
04:16But they were just trying to get to a position where they think they could win.
04:20Until next time, the type of physical encontramos.
