CeeLo Green joins 'The Big Tigger Morning Show' to discuss how he's reformed the group Gnarls Barkley with Danger Mouse, their newest album 'Atlanta,' any other possible music to come, and more.
Transcript
00:01Big Ticket Morning Show with Jazzy McBee on the People's Station, V-Mino 3, ATL's number
00:05one for hip-hop, R&B, and throwbacks. Jazzy!
00:08Yes, Big Tick!
00:09Cee-lo, goody-mo, green.
00:11He is in the building.
00:13How are you, sir?
00:14Good day, King. I'm alive and well.
00:15Always good to see you.
00:16Yeah, we had a good time last night of the private listening session.
00:20I was telling you, we were just talking about we need to have more of that, where it needs
00:23to be exclusive, right?
00:26And then last night, I felt like it was a good vibe, because it was Atlanta, and you
00:30got on the mic for a minute, and busting, you know, goody-mob, the goody.
00:34I was like, this is it!
00:36Yeah, it was a lot of city love.
00:38Yes!
00:38I think it was exclusive for the most part.
00:40Yeah.
00:41It just needs to become more customary again.
00:44Customary.
00:44It's a lost art.
00:45You know what I mean?
00:46We were calling it the speak-easy.
00:47We lost that socialism between us.
00:50Yeah, we don't have those opportunities and spaces where we can just gather and kick it.
00:55Without it being a reason for, like, we just here.
00:58Don't have to be no politics or none of that.
01:00That part.
01:00Absolutely.
01:01I got the same kind of energy at your 50th birthday party.
01:04Oh, yeah.
01:05That was a time.
01:06That was a time.
01:07A time.
01:08Speaking of the time, the time!
01:10Boy, I was saying the time!
01:11Was at that night.
01:13That was awesome, bro.
01:14Let me thank y'all for coming, man, because that was a really beautiful event.
01:18Memorable.
01:19It was.
01:19Unforgettable.
01:20Unforgettable.
01:21And, you know, Shawnee is the sweetest heart.
01:25Hey, she's sweet!
01:26Oh, my gosh.
01:26You know what I mean?
01:27And she outdid herself.
01:29But she keep tapping herself.
01:30I don't know.
01:31So, I don't know what she's going to try to do this year.
01:33But I said, I don't need nothing.
01:34I don't need to keep on living.
01:35We ain't got to celebrate nothing, man.
01:36But that was enough for the rest of my life, almost, to be with the time.
01:40And also, unfortunately, we lost Jelly Bean.
01:42Yeah.
01:42The drama from the time, shortly after.
01:44And I was like, wow.
01:45Wow.
01:45But I had the opportunity, the pleasure for all of those legendary people to love on me
01:51in my lifetime.
01:52I get a chance to call Mars Day Apollonia.
01:56You know what I'm saying?
01:57Like, you know, to name a few on the phone.
01:59Right.
02:00Amen.
02:01And they call me, and how you doing?
02:03And Prince told me before he left us to see about you.
02:09Ain't that something?
02:10Mm-hmm.
02:10Yeah, man.
02:10It's special.
02:11You've got a time.
02:12How, if life has at all, changed since 50?
02:15What's different?
02:16Is your perspective different?
02:18Is your outlook different?
02:19Is the reality of it different?
02:21What's different if it is at all?
02:27Well, I guess it's just a continuum.
02:30You know what I mean?
02:31I feel like we're just still carrying the torch and doing the diligence.
02:36So it's just, you know, one step at a time.
02:38I think it's a lot more careful.
02:40We're not rushing into it.
02:41You know what I'm saying?
02:41You feel me?
02:42Like, we're just kind of wishing and willfully thinking for one of our steps to be ordered.
02:49You know what I'm saying?
02:50So, like, I'm still waiting on command.
02:51You know what I'm saying?
02:52Like, and then I just want to act in accordance and in obedience.
02:55You know what I'm saying?
02:56So, like, but with that, you know what I'm saying?
02:58My mission statement is the work I'm doing.
03:00Amen.
03:00And that work he doing currently is the Norse Barkley album, Atlanta.
03:05That was a great segue.
03:06You see how we did that there?
03:09New album out now, 20 years since the last Norse Barkley.
03:13Yeah.
03:14Why now?
03:16That's a good question, too.
03:18You know, but so let's say, so we'll be technical about it.
03:21It's been about 18 years.
03:22Okay.
03:24And then it's been about nine years for us working on this project.
03:27Really?
03:28So just, you know, happily distracted with other things that, you know, took precedence in those times.
03:33And we just always kept in touch and wasn't really sure what we would do or when, you know, it
03:40would happen for us.
03:41But he called me one day and I was like, wow.
03:44I said, I know it's real if he calls me because danger is very, very demure and quiet and detached,
03:51if you will.
03:52And so I'm like, okay, you called me.
03:54You want to do something?
03:55Because I'm already, I'm always ready to get busy.
03:57You know what I'm saying?
03:57You hear me?
03:58Like, but yeah, he called me one day and I went and met him somewhere.
04:03I forgot where we went.
04:04Oh, so we decided to go to Joshua Tree.
04:07And so we went out to the desert, just us and an engineer.
04:11And it was great, but we didn't do anything because we hadn't been together in some years and just talked
04:16about music and art and, you know, our lives at the time.
04:20And, of course, you know, sat and listened to some open, you know, pieces.
04:24We called them either pieces or spaces.
04:26That's the new verbiage for tracks.
04:27Okay.
04:28You should play me a couple of spaces.
04:30I like it.
04:30Yeah, I heard for real say that.
04:31That sounds so cool.
04:32I like that.
04:33Play me, play me.
04:34Play this space for me.
04:35I'm like, yeah.
04:36Okay, I like it.
04:36Because it is like a, you know, it's a, what's the word I'm looking for?
04:41Yeah, it's a space.
04:42It's a space.
04:43But anyway, so that was that.
04:45So, but literally we would do a song, a song and a half, you know what I mean?
04:49Like, you know, you just compile that over the following few years.
04:54So it took about nine years to do this album.
04:56Nine years to do 13 songs.
04:57That's terrible.
04:58Nine years?
04:58But this is a hell of a 13 songs, though.
05:00You know what I'm saying?
05:01If I do say so myself, but with the utmost modesty and humility, man, I'm really proud
05:06and I'm humbled by this music.
05:08Okay.
05:08Yep.
05:09Like I said, I had a chance to listen to it last night.
05:11Most memorable song on the album for you?
05:19Well, I think there's a, there's a quality in a, what's the word, quintessential?
05:26It's quintessential, you know, because I think of the aesthetic used.
05:31It sounds old.
05:33It sounds older than me.
05:34I was going to say, it sounds 70s-ish.
05:36So that's, I like those vignettes.
05:40I like those, those kind of throwbacks, the little journeys, you know what I mean?
05:48Like, you know, and so, yeah, so it's all a trip to me.
05:53Okay.
05:54It's all departure.
05:56You know what I'm saying?
05:56Like, and I like to consider myself an escape artist.
05:59And I feel like I help other people, I help the consumer escape their reality, you know
06:05what I mean?
06:06Like for, you know, two, three minutes at a time.
06:08You know what I'm saying?
06:10So my, to answer your question, my, what's my, my song is Turn Your Hearts Back On.
06:17Okay.
06:18That's the one that I love.
06:19Because he played that track for me, and I want to say this was 2017 or 2018.
06:28And it made me cry.
06:30Really?
06:30You know what I'm saying?
06:31I'm proud to say that.
06:32I'm proud to say that my heart works, you know what I'm saying?
06:34It's in the right place.
06:35And I love, love, love music, and I love people even more.
06:38You know what I'm saying?
06:39And I want to be, you know, of service.
06:43It's just my.
06:44What about it made you cry?
06:46It's because I could, okay, sometimes writing music, the process, sometimes something that
06:52jump out at you immediately.
06:54Yeah.
06:54And, you know, let's say like if it's a club track or something like that, you kind
06:57of know, you know, the, the, the, the scene, the set already.
07:01Right.
07:03But something that makes you wander off, you just become introspective.
07:07And I'm just, I'm like, why is it bringing, you know, all of these spirits up in me?
07:12And then I get the chance to wonder about him.
07:14I'm like, my partner in this is like, he's something else.
07:18You know what I mean?
07:18And I begin to be in awe of him and his ability to, to compel me in that way.
07:25And I just started thinking about all these thoughts.
07:27I'm just like, wow.
07:28Like, I know, I know this could be potentially be something special.
07:33I don't know what it, what it is yet.
07:34But each song is like an excavation.
07:37You know how the archaeologists go out and then they're digging up dinosaur bones, but
07:42they got the little bit of brush and like, they're being all delicate with it because
07:45it's precious, right?
07:47But it's already something underneath.
07:49So I'm saying that to say this, the song is already inside of it.
07:53And I'm saying like, I just have to discover it.
07:54You know what I mean?
07:55So that's a, you know, a real riveting kind of feeling.
07:59I love it.
08:00I love it.
08:01Also, last night you said.
08:02I don't know about it.
08:03Talk that talk to you.
08:04Also, during the dinner, the private dinner, you said something that was kind of profound.
08:11You were saying that you want people to know you.
08:13You know, you've been in the industry for a long, long time.
08:17Do you still think that people don't know who CeeLo really is?
08:25Well, not completely.
08:27You know what I mean?
08:28Because I think the fascination with artists is our innate ability to make reality rhyme.
08:39When in fact, you know what I'm saying?
08:41It doesn't.
08:42You know what I mean?
08:42Like, so life hardly makes sense to anyone.
08:45You know what I mean?
08:47I'm working on it.
08:48My own mind.
08:49You know what I mean?
08:49So it's either one or two things.
08:51Either you're making life happen or life is just simply happening to you.
08:55You know what I mean?
08:59So I want people to know that I'm intentional about that if I can help.
09:04You know what I'm saying?
09:04Like, give us some clarity.
09:06Give us some closure.
09:09You know, give us some color.
09:11You know, I'm here for that.
09:15And then I give myself because it blesses me to be a blessing.
09:19That's really all I really want to be.
09:21You know what I'm saying?
09:21You feel me?
09:22So music for me is like civil service and social service.
09:26Like, you know, I'm a first responder to that feeling.
09:29You know what I mean?
09:30And I share it.
09:31I mean, like, as often as I can and as often as it comes to me.
09:34And when it doesn't come to me, I don't even feel purposed.
09:37And that's when I get depressed.
09:37And that's when I can write songs like that cover the space of gnarles.
09:42Right.
09:42And stuff like that.
09:43You know what I mean?
09:43And that's when real life is like, ooh, I don't really know what to do.
09:46You know what I'm saying?
09:46Like, you know.
09:47But then again, I don't want to stretch myself too thin and you don't want to overdo it.
09:50You don't want to exhaust yourself, especially with, you know, lack of the appreciation.
09:55You know what I'm saying?
09:56Like, and so I got songs that kind of deal with topics like that.
10:00Like a song called I Amnesia.
10:03Like, I Amnesia.
10:04I Am The Forgotten.
10:05And so, like, you know what I mean?
10:07Like, trying not to forget about myself.
10:09You know what I mean?
10:10And what my purpose is.
10:12So, yeah.
10:13Well, the purpose is for you to go check out this new Gnarles Barkley Atlanta.
10:16Atlanta.
10:17It's streaming everywhere.
10:18Pick it up.
10:18Go get it and live with it in your new space.
10:22Please.
10:23Play the spaces.
10:24C-Lo Greens, I guess we'll be back with more of me and Jazzy McBee right after this on V103.
10:29Big Ticket Morning Show with Jazzy McBee on the People's Station V103.
10:32ATL's number one for hip-hop, R&B, and throwbacks.
10:35C-Lo Green.
10:36In the building.
10:37Brand new Gnarles Barkley album, Atlanta, available in everywhere.
10:42Tell me about this song, Pitches.
10:44Okay.
10:47So, that's one of the earlier tracks that I heard, too.
10:50Okay.
10:51And we did that one here in Atlanta.
10:53And as a matter of fact, I got a shot on my bro, Cory Moe.
10:56We was working out of his studio.
10:57Okay.
10:58And, yeah, he brought a couple tracks with him.
11:01And people don't know that Danger Mouse is also from Atlanta, too.
11:04Okay.
11:04Yeah, he's from the east side, man, with the re-dan and all that.
11:08My side.
11:09That's me all the way.
11:10Okay, okay.
11:10But it's south side, though.
11:12Oh, whatever.
11:13Don't get into no war now.
11:15Go head on.
11:16But it's all love, man.
11:17That's great.
11:17It's all love.
11:18So, again, another one of those experiences of where I get a chance to have this out-of-body.
11:27And I'm like, wow.
11:28Okay, I'm thinking about childhood.
11:31And I'm thinking about my grandma.
11:34I mean, my mom.
11:36I'm thinking about growing up in Southwest Atlanta.
11:38I'm thinking about 66 Greenbrier.
11:42You know, was the martyr bus that would come and pick me up and drop me off at Greenbrier Mall.
11:47You know what I'm saying?
11:47Where my mother owned a store.
11:49You know, I was with Jermaine last night.
11:51Where Criss Cross was discovered.
11:53You know what I'm saying?
11:54So, I spent almost my whole life in that mall.
11:57But anyway, so, yeah.
11:59So, it just brought back all of this nostalgia.
12:01And I just started to put it together in somewhat of a chronological order.
12:05You know, paraphrase them.
12:06Because, again, real life doesn't rhyme.
12:07So, you have to make it make sense.
12:08You have to give those experiences a poetic justice.
12:11You know what I mean?
12:12Like, that's what music is all about.
12:13And if you can't do that, then you don't qualify.
12:15You know what I'm saying?
12:16Or it doesn't qualify, rather.
12:17Well, introduce your song.
12:19Hey, everybody.
12:19Let's check out the new Niles Barkley song, Pictures from Atlanta.
12:24Three, two, one.
12:26That's Pictures off the new Niles Barkley, Atlanta.
12:29CeeLo Green.
12:30Yeah, that's a good one right there.
12:31I like that right there.
12:33Big Ticket Morning Show with Jazzy McBee on V103.
12:36All right.
12:38What do you want to know, Teague?
12:39You know, I got questions.
12:41You know, I'm a question about it.
12:42So, I sat courtside one time at a Hawks game.
12:47I sat courtside at a Hawks game one day.
12:49He was performing a song.
12:52Okay.
12:54And there's the clean version to the song, which I expected.
12:59And then there's the not-so-clean version of the song, which kind of happened.
13:04What happened?
13:05All right.
13:05So, I remember that.
13:07And I almost got in some trouble for that.
13:10But, I didn't mean to.
13:12I asked them.
13:13You know what I mean?
13:13What?
13:15You didn't mean to?
13:16No, because I thought I was clear on that.
13:19You know, okay.
13:20Because certain shows, it's contracted.
13:22Okay.
13:23But, you know, if you can't do that, it would.
13:25I mean, if you, you know, breach that agreement, it would default the whole payment.
13:31You know what I'm saying?
13:31So, I have to be careful about that.
13:33But, I thought I was clear to do the uncensored version of it.
13:39And I'm thinking, like, okay, it ain't being televised.
13:42I'm saying, like, I know some kids in here, but, like, you know, their parents are saying
13:45words.
13:46And everybody knows the song.
13:47Do they not?
13:48So, I don't even find it offensive.
13:50I'm saying, like, you know, but, you know, you got to be politically correct in those places.
13:54I'm saying, like, you know, it's for those reasons.
13:55But, yeah, that was it.
13:57But, it was truly an honest mistake.
14:00An honest mistake.
14:01You know what I'm saying?
14:01Sorry, baby.
14:02No.
14:03So, when you finished up, did they immediately tell you, like, hey, like, you weren't supposed
14:08to do that?
14:08Or was it until you saw the video that circulated online?
14:10No, I forgot who was our point person who was kind of, like, you know, chaperoning me
14:15and getting me here to there.
14:16But, she was a little infuriated because, like, and she wasn't really mad at me.
14:21Now, she's like, oh, my God.
14:22I mean, like, she's concerned about her job.
14:25Oh.
14:25You know what I mean?
14:26So, yeah, that's where it gets touchy.
14:29All right.
14:29Well, you know, we move along.
14:31How do you feel about them canceling Magic City Monday?
14:35I just heard that last night.
14:36Yeah.
14:37And I was like, why?
14:38Because I had always, well, excuse me, I had thought that it was so amazing.
14:45Because we don't shame the city.
14:48Right.
14:48You know what I mean?
14:48Right.
14:49Like, that's a landmark.
14:51That's a, they need to put one of them almanac things.
14:55You know what I mean?
14:56Like, seriously, that's a landmark to the city.
15:01It's brought so much tourism, you know, generated income and curated some of the best music of our lives.
15:13You know what I mean?
15:13So, like, stemming from this city and just overall and in general.
15:17So, like, I don't feel no kind of way.
15:19We love Magic.
15:20You know what I mean?
15:21Like, and we love, we love.
15:23It's the culture.
15:23And it's a hustling city.
15:25You know what I mean?
15:25Like, we get into the money every which way.
15:28You know what I'm saying?
15:29Like, and I don't want y'all to think I'm two.
15:31You know what I'm saying?
15:31Like, you know, like, up to, you know, the well to do.
15:34You know what I'm saying?
15:35Like, well, I don't still understand the struggle and the hustle.
15:38And getting it up out the mud.
15:40So, like, we respect the ladies.
15:42You know what I mean?
15:42Like, that's what the balling is about.
15:44Because they like the female equivalent.
15:46You know what I mean?
15:47Like, to the male hustlers who getting it out the street or whatever they doing.
15:51You know what I mean?
15:51So, like, we all just sharing the wealth and supporting each other.
15:54But that's what it really means.
15:56You know what I'm saying?
15:56Like, you know, so this was a good time.
15:58You know what I'm saying?
15:58Absolutely a good time.
15:59A good time.
16:00A good time.
16:01Sustained.
16:02So, sometimes, I mean, I understand, you know, political correctness and appropriation and stuff like that.
16:09I just, I didn't think it was offensive.
16:11But if they don't think it's good for their brand or brand association, then so be it.
16:15But I wish it had to happen because that was cool.
16:17Amen.
16:17Because then it opened my mind up to other things.
16:19What other kind of collaborations could we actually do?
16:22That part.
16:23Now, speaking of, we were talking about nostalgia.
16:26I keep going back to the listening session because, again, it was amazing.
16:30I definitely enjoyed myself.
16:32I was like, make a joke.
16:33I was like, because I want to start doing Bible study at the blue flame.
16:36Don't do that.
16:37You trying to save yourself.
16:39Bible study at the blue flame, y'all.
16:42No, so, so.
16:43I was talking about this.
16:44You see what I mean?
16:44But see, that's my sense of humor.
16:46I wanted to, I had to hold it back.
16:48I wanted to make that joke.
16:49See, I don't know if I'm going to feel somebody just was saying that.
16:51No, you're hot.
16:51It's all right.
16:52You being you.
16:52You being you.
16:53And this is V103 in our show, so you good.
16:56So, like I said, last night you picked up the mic.
16:58You performed Goody Bags.
17:00And then Greg Street was like, nah, this is the one right here.
17:02So, Soul Food actually dropped.
17:04Yeah.
17:04And that brought back, like, the old Atlanta, the real Atlanta, the other side of you of
17:11the Goody Mob.
17:11I know you guys did albums a long time ago, but will we ever, ever get, like, another collaboration
17:18of Goody Mob?
17:22I just answered this question yesterday by saying no.
17:26You said no?
17:27Mm-hmm.
17:27Really?
17:27Why?
17:28Yeah, but I say no respectfully.
17:30Respectfully, okay.
17:37Because, not to be too technical, but let me be specific.
17:42I think our time is incomparable.
17:47Our era is irreplaceable.
17:49I miss it.
17:50I miss the 90s.
17:52You know what I'm saying?
17:53I miss our youth.
17:54I miss the old Atlanta and the music that came from it.
17:59I miss Rika Wade.
18:01Mm-hmm.
18:02You know, and those things are, you know, they're monuments.
18:09And, you know, the past is permanent.
18:11You know what I'm saying?
18:12Like, but you become a product of the environment.
18:15You know what I mean?
18:15And that's why that music was as signified as it is.
18:19And I don't want to do it further injustice, honestly.
18:23You know what I'm saying?
18:23Like, you know, because I think that, you know, even though there are some current events that are going on
18:32that probably would have been relative for Goody Mob to speak.
18:36You know what I'm saying?
18:38Sometimes a situation, creatively or otherwise, it doesn't, it almost can't even afford to give charity anymore.
18:50You know what I'm saying?
18:51Like, you know, and again, I'm always concerned about the appreciation.
18:53I'm like, what's the audience?
18:55You know what I'm saying?
18:55Like, you know, like, for Goody Mob.
18:57And I don't want to go on and on and on, but I want to say their name on this
19:01platform because that's me.
19:03You know what I'm saying?
19:03You feel me?
19:03Dungeon Family is my family.
19:05For sure.
19:05You know what I'm saying?
19:05Like, those are my brothers.
19:07You know what I'm saying?
19:10But there have been conflicts of interest.
19:14You know what I mean?
19:14Like, you know, and things of that nature, creative differences and stuff like that.
19:18You know what I mean?
19:18Like, you see the kind of things that, you know, to me, this is like me at 50.
19:25You know what I mean?
19:25Like, you know, and counting.
19:28And these are the things that I want to be responsible for.
19:31You know what I mean?
19:32Like, and quite frankly, on a professional level, I want to be able to do things my way.
19:38You know what I mean?
19:40And not that I don't respect everyone.
19:43You know what I'm saying?
19:43Like, I just, the dilemma of trying to divide things equally and everybody have a say, it's really troublesome.
19:51You know what I'm saying?
19:52Like, imagine this.
19:55Okay, I'm going to use the other bros for an example.
19:58Outcast is two of them.
19:59And they've had difficulties.
20:01You know what I mean?
20:01Like, you know what I mean?
20:02Like, they haven't performed together in years.
20:04The love is still there.
20:05Right, right, right.
20:06There's creative conflict for whatever reason or whatever the issue may or may not be.
20:12But, so imagine that multiplied by two.
20:15So, like, you know what I mean?
20:17I hate it.
20:17Turn it into four.
20:18You know what I mean?
20:21Like, you know what I mean?
20:21And it's that much more conflict and chaos and, you know what I mean?
20:27Like, and, you know, stuff like that.
20:29So, I do want to expound on that because yesterday I listened back after I answered it because I said
20:34to myself, when I answer this question, I know it's going to come up.
20:37I want to just be blunt.
20:38I want to be straight.
20:39You know what I'm saying?
20:41But now I'm recalling it.
20:44I'm always like, maybe I was a little rude.
20:46You know what I'm saying?
20:46Like, you know, because, you know, you know what I'm saying?
20:49Right.
20:49So, let me show the affection.
20:51Okay.
20:51You know what I'm saying?
20:51Like, for who we are, you know.
20:54And also, I think it gives way to opportunities for everyone to prove themselves individually.
21:00Right.
21:01I watched a great, you know, interview with Timo with Be High and Wick.
21:05What up, Wick and B?
21:07Yeah, they were there.
21:08And I called him.
21:09I said, man, I'm proud of you.
21:11Congratulations on your new album.
21:13Where you at, Timo?
21:14You know what I'm saying?
21:15Mm-hmm.
21:17And he spoke so eloquently.
21:18And people don't get the chance to hear Mo speak as often.
21:21Right, right, right.
21:21And he said something that was really poignant.
21:23He said, you know, Goody Ma may have been his safe haven.
21:30And it may end up, it could very well possibly be his crutch.
21:34You know what I'm saying?
21:34You feel me?
21:34Or if he got too comfortable in it.
21:36And we should always be able to come home.
21:38You know what I'm saying?
21:39Like, but I got my own house.
21:41You feel me?
21:42Right.
21:42You know what I'm saying?
21:43Right.
21:43And that's it.
21:44I'm the father and provider and king of my own castle.
21:48Amen.
21:48And that's it.
21:49You know what I mean?
21:50And it's been, we've been together 30 years and toured all over the world.
21:56And even after we've been supposed to broke up with things like that.
21:59Because like, stuff like that don't last as long as that lasts.
22:02Like, look at these other groups.
22:03Look at, I can't, I ain't going to call anybody out.
22:05But, you know, we sustained.
22:09You know what I'm saying?
22:09Like, even after very obvious reasons of why or how people could get torn apart.
22:15You know what I'm saying?
22:15Like, you know.
22:16And we held on.
22:17You know what I'm saying?
22:17And we're here.
22:18And I think Gip is finding a place in politics and his products.
22:25You know.
22:26Which is actually good.
22:28You know what I'm saying?
22:34And like, so this open space, you know what I'm saying?
22:38Like, gives you room.
22:39Elbow room.
22:40It gives us all.
22:41And so, I won't, I'm going to try not to be as definitive on this interview with you all.
22:48Because we all family.
22:49So, you know, I'm going to just say, I really don't know what the future will hold.
22:54But for right now, I don't really have the emotional attachment.
22:58I don't have the psychological, you know what I'm saying?
23:00Like, interest in it.
23:01You know what I'm saying?
23:02Like, but I still love the people.
23:04You know what I mean?
23:04Like, but now my question is for the people.
23:07And it's like, what do you love?
23:09You know what I mean?
23:11Because even that, you know, could get counseled out by the other noise that's going on.
23:17You know, and not to insult anybody else's art.
23:19Because there's this great quote by Andy Warhol that art is what you can get away with.
23:25So, all things can qualify.
23:27You know what I mean?
23:28Right.
23:33So, Goody Mudd wasn't business with me or any of us.
23:37It was personal.
23:37You know what I'm saying?
23:38And I got a chance to express and accomplish a lot of that.
23:41So now I want to forge some new territory that's uncharted.
23:45I want to go through these far regions like Norris Barkley and plant my flag there or spray paint it
23:54on a wall over there somewhere like CeeLo was here.
23:56You know what I mean?
23:56And so it's just about exploration, you know, and expansion.
24:00That's it.
24:01Brand new Norris Barkley album, Atlanta out now.
24:03You were talking about old Atlanta.
24:05We were talking about the spaces and places where that don't happen.
24:12One of the biggest perceptions before I moved to Atlanta and I guess across the country was how much collaboration
24:19and camaraderie there was amongst Atlanta artists.
24:23It was like Atlanta always stick together, they ride together, they do things together.
24:27Do you think that's been lost in more recent times and is it hurting the music?
24:36Yeah, I do.
24:39It's just like last night we touched on it though.
24:41I mean like you know there's no personal problem.
24:44I'm saying like we sung Goody Mob all night.
24:47Yeah, we did.
24:47We did.
24:48We did.
24:49You know, and I was even proud of that.
24:51So that even touched my heart and softened that spot.
24:54That had become hardened over the years.
24:56You know what I mean?
24:56But not hardened because of the lack of emotion.
24:59You know what I mean?
25:00Like hardened because it needed to grow a thicker layer of skin to endure.
25:04You know what I mean?
25:04Like you know we were doing the heavy lifting.
25:07You know what I mean?
25:07For the city during that time.
25:09You know what I mean?
25:10So but to answer your question, yeah man.
25:12So that's what that meeting was about too.
25:14I think we lost a lot of that up close and personal.
25:17You know what I mean?
25:17Like and take your cool off, man.
25:19Like you know take your personality off, man.
25:22Like you know take your job title off and just come.
25:25You know what I'm saying?
25:25Like be the community.
25:26You know what I'm saying?
25:27You feel me like?
25:27And make the connection.
25:29You know what I'm saying?
25:29Like you know identify with the next phase.
25:32I mean like you know like that's going to, what's the word I'm looking for?
25:38That's going to reserve your place.
25:40Once you transition over into you know a promotion of sorts or a retirement.
25:47You know what I mean?
25:47Like because we can't do it all forever.
25:49So all that is trying to hold on to it forever is like you know what I mean?
25:53Like do it as long as you can.
25:54You know what I mean?
25:55Like and there's some enduring individuals and there's some personalities that's needed
25:58and perspectives that's needed because these guys that have been in the position for as long as they have,
26:03you know the wisdom comes with that.
26:05You know what I'm saying?
26:05Like so we want our daily dose of that.
26:08I mean like people like yourself and yourself.
26:10You know what I mean?
26:11But you know there's some young generation being inspired by you.
26:16You know what I mean?
26:16Like and you know you want to be able to identify with that too.
26:19I mean like man y'all come on up.
26:21We're going to big y'all up and go get y'all right.
26:24Let me get it out of your ass.
26:28That's the mama spit on the thumb.
26:30You know what I mean?
26:30Like and y'all too young so I'm not talking about y'all.
26:35I'm just talking about the act of generosity.
26:37You know what I'm saying?
26:38You feel me?
26:38So that's it man.
26:40The family values.
26:41We got to get that back.
26:42You know what I'm saying?
26:43But you know what I'm saying?
26:44Like that's one conversation here, there, elsewhere.
26:47You know what this conversation should be had within the music itself.
26:50Absolutely.
26:51Because that is the most often and perpetual, you know, messaging, you know what I'm saying?
26:56Like it can be put into motion.
26:57You know what I mean?
26:58Like and motion is, you know what I'm saying, for going forward.
27:01Yeah.
27:01Not for going backward.
27:02You know what I'm saying?
27:03Or standing still.
27:04You know what I mean?
27:05Like we continue to evolve.
27:07You know what I mean?
27:07Like and, you know, we got to be responsible and accountable for that.
27:10And so like because, you know what I mean, you know, it is what it is.
27:14Love it.
27:14And we talked about evolution, right?
27:16So, but this is Atlanta, right?
27:18So, what is one thing about the city that you hope never changes?
27:25That you wanted to stay the same?
27:27We got to grow.
27:27But something about Atlanta that doesn't need to go away.
27:32Well, I said, you know, Atlanta is a get money city, get money and let money.
27:39And let money.
27:40You feel me?
27:40Like, you know, let, we let everybody come.
27:44You know what I'm saying?
27:45I'm here.
27:46That part.
27:47That part.
27:48You know, we was talking about it the other day.
27:50I love the fact that Boosie be out there acting bad.
27:54You know what I'm saying?
27:54Like, you know, living up to his name.
27:56Courtside.
27:57You know what I'm saying?
27:57Like, cheering the Hawks on.
27:59I think that's great.
28:00Because we get a, you know, a perception of him.
28:04Absolutely.
28:05But he's a human being, too.
28:07You know what I'm saying?
28:07You feel me?
28:07Like, and Atlanta will allow you that fun and that outlet.
28:11You know what I'm saying?
28:11Like, and I look at him.
28:12I'm saying he's like a big kid out there.
28:14You know what I'm saying?
28:14You feel me?
28:15Like, and I love that.
28:16You know what I'm saying?
28:16I'm like, he cheering for Atlanta more than I'm at the game.
28:19I said, where did he go?
28:20Right.
28:20You know what I'm saying?
28:21Like, so, so to answer your question, no, I want us to evolve.
28:27But if we get into the money, you know what I'm saying?
28:29Like, let's get to the business plan.
28:31You know what I'm saying?
28:32Like, of how we could own, you know what I'm saying?
28:34Like, you know, or have equity and some say in what we're doing structurally as the city grows.
28:42Because there's so many things that were once there that aren't there in the world.
28:45I'm like, I live in the nostalgia.
28:47You know, I take my son who's 25 now.
28:50Take him, you know, we might pull out the old school.
28:54You know what I'm saying?
28:54Like, just go for a ride.
28:55I'm like, okay, let's go.
28:56Then we'll hit, you know, because I'm coming from, I'm coming from almost Noonan, Georgia.
29:02Oh, yeah, yeah.
29:02You know what I'm saying?
29:03Oh, yeah, that's right.
29:03And we might hit, okay, let's get out old national.
29:07Take the long way from top to bottom.
29:09Yeah, yeah.
29:10Then we might take that over to Main Street.
29:13You know what I'm saying?
29:13Take that down through College Park.
29:16Before you know it, we in the West End.
29:18You know what I'm saying?
29:18Like, ooh, Montrez used to be right there.
29:20Used to, right.
29:21You know what I'm saying?
29:21Yeah.
29:22Queen City.
29:24What else?
29:26Ooh, Chantrells.
29:27You know what I'm saying?
29:27Like, even though he was here when Chantrells was here.
29:31I miss Chantrells, too.
29:31That was some good food.
29:32Y'all remember that?
29:34Okay?
29:34So, I'm being a stagionist.
29:36I live in it.
29:37I'm just like, damn.
29:38I wish I had a known.
29:39I wish I had the money.
29:41Oh, I wish we had the conversation.
29:43Or maybe they were in trouble.
29:44Or maybe they were just ready to transition and retire.
29:46You know, Sheff was getting old.
29:48I did see that decline.
29:50Josh, the African brother who used to be the waiter for everybody.
29:54Everybody loved Josh.
29:56I heard that he passed.
29:57I'm like, oh, no.
29:59Somebody like the spirit, the sweetness of him, he's supposed to live forever.
30:03You know what I'm saying?
30:03So, at the very least, I can just hope he in heaven.
30:06I guarantee you that he is.
30:07You know what I'm saying?
30:08So, I just wish we could keep, you know, those legacy businesses and namesakes.
30:17Yeah, those staples.
30:19That's how we keep some of those relics.
30:21You know what I'm saying?
30:21Like, you know, because that's the difference between, you know, old and antique is appreciation.
30:27If you appreciate a thing, it will appreciate in value.
30:31All right.
30:31You know what I'm saying?
30:32I love that.
30:32So, that's some good game.
30:33It is.
30:34Good game.
30:34You know what else is a good game?
30:35That brand new Niles Barkley album, Atlanta.
30:39You need to pick it up.
30:39You need to stream it.
30:40Take it home.
30:41Love it.
30:41Get into your space with this space.
30:45Play this space.
30:46See what I did?
30:46Please.
30:47Okay, there it is.
30:48Good to see you, Black Man.
30:49All right.
30:50Cee-lo, good emo, green in the building.
30:52All right.
30:53Y'all show him love.
30:54And we'll be back with more of me and Jazzy McBee right after this on the People's Station
30:57V103.
31:04We'll be back with more of you.
