00:00Big Ticket Morning Show with Jazzy McVeigh on the People Station, V-Metal 3, the ATL's
00:05number one for hip-hop, R&B, and throwbacks.
00:08Jazzy.
00:08Yes.
00:09We got an idol in this.
00:10I know, right?
00:11We really do.
00:12I mean, it's ain't an American idol.
00:15We just gonna call him idol.
00:17Jamal Roberts, the winner of season 23, is in the building.
00:21What's up, man?
00:22What's up?
00:22What's happening?
00:23Jamal, good morning.
00:24Just living the dream, man.
00:25It feels amazing.
00:26Bro, you sang your entire face off.
00:28We really did.
00:30You unalied to every song.
00:33Like, seriously.
00:34No, I appreciate that.
00:36We watched you week by week gain in popularity.
00:41We watched you week by week gain in confidence.
00:44Yeah.
00:45And what was it like the second you know that you're the winner?
00:51Oh, man, it took a grind forever, you know, to read my name off.
00:54I had my head down.
00:55But when they said $26 million, I just felt like a peace come over me.
00:59And I was like, man, they had to be my people, you know, showing up for me in a big way.
01:03And they did exactly that.
01:05They had my back the entire season.
01:07And that was the reason I was pushing so hard because they kept supporting me and motivating me week by week.
01:12So I just, you know, it felt amazing just to know that there was somebody that was excited to see me take the stage every Sunday and Monday.
01:18I love it.
01:19Most votes ever.
01:21Most votes ever.
01:22Ever, ever?
01:22Now, was there any doubt in your mind that you may not be a finalist or may not win?
01:29Oh, well, it's TV, so.
01:31You just don't know.
01:34I've done TV before and it didn't end too well.
01:36Okay.
01:37So I was kind of like, I don't know.
01:38You know, with the song choices and everything, I was kind of nervous about every move I made.
01:43Everything was strategic.
01:44So I'm just, I'm happy.
01:46I'm on the winning end.
01:48Amen, amen.
01:49Listen, so is it true that you tried out for Idol before and didn't make it?
01:53Yeah, they shut me down.
01:55Really?
01:56Yeah.
01:56What happened?
01:57I auditioned.
01:58I went there and they told me, need more work, need more work.
02:02I said, okay.
02:03Did that serve as motivation?
02:05Yeah, it was motivation.
02:06I mean, I needed more work.
02:07I went and worked and then I came back.
02:09So what type of work did you do to come back stronger?
02:12Stage presence.
02:15Worked on vocals a little more.
02:17But it was all about stage presence.
02:19I used to sing like Lee Williams, you know, with my eyes closed the entire time.
02:22Okay.
02:23When I was younger, I would open my eyes and I'd be turned a completely different direction from when I started.
02:28So I've seen a big change as an artist.
02:32Amen, amen.
02:33My man Jamal Roberts is in the building.
02:35American Idol season 23 winner.
02:38As a new dad, I would like to say congratulations on your latest edition.
02:42What was it like for the family to see you win?
02:45Oh, man, it was amazing.
02:46I was upset I couldn't be there with my baby girl when she was born.
02:49Right.
02:49But that just gave me that little push I needed, you know.
02:53But I was so ready to get home to see her.
02:56And that's all I was thinking about when I was up there.
02:58I was like, I just had another girl.
03:00I'm a girl dad now.
03:02She was the first one I missed because I usually be in there, you know, wide open.
03:05But it served a purpose and I'm doing this for my girl.
03:09So, yeah.
03:09I love it.
03:10So what did Wifey say while she was having a baby?
03:12Did she give you encouragement to say, hey, stay there.
03:14I'm good.
03:14I'll do it by myself.
03:15What was her reaction like?
03:17Wifey didn't give me any comments.
03:21Okay.
03:21So the mother of your child, what did she say?
03:26Oh, Lord.
03:27What did she say?
03:28Okay.
03:29She told me to focus and keep doing what I'm doing.
03:32And I told her I'd do that.
03:34Okay.
03:35Good.
03:36You had to put that out there.
03:37But okay.
03:37All right.
03:38Okay.
03:40Nice.
03:40I love you, Jabal.
03:42I know.
03:42You got to love that.
03:44Oh, my God.
03:46Yeah.
03:47So, all right.
03:48So, you're now, here you are.
03:50American Idol.
03:51Season winner.
03:52Most votes ever.
03:53Rumor has it that you're going back to your old job.
03:57I went back.
03:58I went back for the last two days.
04:02Do a little bus duty.
04:03You know, just to see the kids off and tell them I was proud of them.
04:06But they pretty much done retired me already anyway.
04:08So, I don't think I'll be going back.
04:10But any chance I get to go and speak into the kids' life and motivate them, I'm going to do that.
04:15Okay.
04:15I love it.
04:15Now, since you do sing gospel music, have there been people try to persuade you to do secular music?
04:22Persuade me is, you know, I'm going to do what I want to do anyway.
04:25But I love gospel.
04:26It's my roots.
04:27It's where I come from.
04:28And I always include God in anything I do.
04:31But R&B is a lane.
04:33Southern Soul is a lane.
04:35I mean, there's just lanes out here you can take.
04:37And since I've proven myself to be versatile this season, I feel like I'm open to any lane.
04:43You know, just choose one.
04:44I saw lots of people congratulate you.
04:49Tyrese put up a post when you remade his song and sang it in the car.
04:53Who out there was like, oh, okay.
04:56Like, did you see that was like surprised or happy for you, like a celebrity or a singer that you were like, oh, yeah, that's what's up.
05:03You know, I looked up to Anthony Hamilton so much growing up.
05:06So it was just a shocker that he just jumped on board, like just full throttle and was like, okay, Jamal Roberts, he's that guy.
05:14Then you have Jelly Roll, just did not let up any this season.
05:18He had my back the entire time.
05:20Then you got Fantasia just.
05:22I know.
05:22I was just, man, my legs was weak when I first seen her.
05:27But she's just amazing.
05:29She's just authentic and she's true to herself.
05:32And she was telling me to do the same thing.
05:33So, you know, it was just a lot of artists with big names that I looked up to that just embraced me.
05:39And it just felt amazing.
05:41Now, I know you said Fantasia.
05:42What was that one piece of advice she gave you throughout your journey?
05:46One piece of advice that she gave me throughout my journey.
05:49She was telling me to stay true to myself and take God with me.
05:56She knew I knew him.
05:57She knew I had a relationship with him.
05:59So she was like, just keep that and don't let the industry change me.
06:04Love it.
06:05Absolutely.
06:06So how do you plan to stay, like, relevant now that the show is done?
06:08We know that, you know, even though Jennifer Hudson didn't win, she's still relevant.
06:14You know, Fantasia, Ruben Studier.
06:15How do you plan to stay in everybody's ears and in front of the TV and on that stage after it's done?
06:22Well, I'm going to continue being myself, moving around, taking gears that's necessary.
06:28And with the management team, I'm going to leave all that hard work to them.
06:32And I'm just going to focus on the music if possible.
06:34Okay.
06:35That's what's happening.
06:36Let me get, so, newfound fame, we're talking to Jamal Roberts, by the way, American Idol season 23 winner.
06:44Newfound fame, platform, and a team.
06:47Whose idea was it to turn down Mr. Musk and that Tesla?
06:51Who?
06:51Well, you know, social media is really social media.
06:58I just created that.
07:01I have no idea what that was.
07:03It was just an article that started going viral.
07:05I haven't talked to anybody about a vehicle.
07:07So, yeah, that's that.
07:10Yeah, so they said, allegedly, you rejected a long Musk's Tesla ad for a debut music video.
07:18You ain't never heard of that?
07:19But if he does call you with a vehicle, are you going to accept it?
07:26Is this the one that drives itself?
07:29Yeah, the Tesla, yes.
07:30I mean, I always wanted a Tesla anyway, but I just, you know, I have to pay close attention to see what that is.
07:36Yes, you do.
07:37The requirements are.
07:38Yes, you do.
07:39Yes, you do.
07:40The fine print is the fine print.
07:42Please believe it.
07:43Jamal, we are very, very proud of you.
07:45Got a brand new single, Heel, out right now.
07:48An amazing testament, if you will.
07:51When people listen to this song, what do you help them walk away with?
07:56The song itself, it speaks for itself.
07:58There's a lot of people that don't know how to heal because of some past experiences.
08:04And I didn't know this song at all when I first sang it.
08:07I chose it just because of the meaning, but I'm a lyric person, so when I listen to the lyrics, I'm like, whoa, that's deep.
08:14This song is just telling me to heal.
08:17Take my pain, take my sins, and just take it away and just heal me.
08:20So I know there's plenty of people out there that's been hurt, been misused, and just take it for granted.
08:25But I just want you to take this moment now that you have permission to heal.
08:31You know, you don't have to worry about those things anymore, so just heal.
08:34I love that.
08:34Now, how do you heal?
08:36Like, how do you heal?
08:37Have you gotten past, like, pain, hurts, and trauma?
08:40How do you do that?
08:41Well, I look at them face on.
08:44Like, I just hit them on the head.
08:46I'm like, well, you're not going to keep me bound by his stripes.
08:49I am, so I'm not going to let any of that, any of the enemy ways dictate my life, my relationship with Christ.
08:57So I just, I'm really like a brush-off kind of guy.
08:59Like, okay, you hurt me by, you know, it's over.
09:02You know, you scandalized my name by, it's cool, it's over with now.
09:06So I'm healing from all that.
09:07I've healed from a lot of stuff, so I'm thanking God for that.
09:10Amen.
09:11So there's an opportunity for you to work with one of your non-secular greats and your secular greats.
09:18Who, like, give me one on each side of the coin.
09:21Like, they've, like, you got an opportunity to sing with them, perform with them.
09:24Who do you want that to be?
09:27Hmm.
09:30Secular or non-secular?
09:34We could try, we could try Jamie Foxx.
09:37I always wanted to sing with Jamie Foxx.
09:39Non-secular.
09:41I love that.
09:43Non-secular, let's do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
09:46Remember, when you put things in the universe.
09:48Yeah, let's do Karen Clark's Sheer.
09:50Okay.
09:50Okay, I like that.
09:52All right, I like that.
09:53Let's do something different, yeah.
09:54That's going to be an amazing duet.
09:56Yes.
09:59That's definitely it.
10:00Just the riffs at the end of the song.
10:03And the runs.
10:04Please believe it.
10:05Jamal, tell everybody one thing that no one knows about you.
10:08Um, my nickname used to be Black Pepper.
10:13Black Pepper, where?
10:14Take it, take it how you want to take it.
10:15Black Pepper, where did you get that name from?
10:17They gave it to me, and I just accepted it.
10:19Okay.
10:20Everybody used to call me that growing up.
10:22Black Pepper.
10:23Nickname used to be Black Pepper, yeah.
10:25I've owned it, it's whatever.
10:26Okay.
10:26You know, back in the day, it used to be Burnt Cookie.
10:28Now it's all six to chocolate, so whatever.
10:32Not the Burnt Cookie, no.
10:35Children are mean.
10:36Yeah, very.
10:37Well, listen, bro, we are in amazement of you.
10:43We are very happy for you, and congratulatory.
10:46The way that you won season 23 with the most votes ever,
10:51and just continue to represent yourself and your family
10:54in an epic manner, says a lot about you,
10:57and we're looking forward to an amazing future for you.
11:00So continue to do your thing,
11:02and I know you're going to have a bunch of songs
11:04for a bunch of time, but always pull up over here.
11:06I know, that's fine.
11:06Always pull up over here.
11:09And if they don't know how to follow you yet,
11:11tell them how to follow you and support you.
11:13You can follow me on all social media platforms
11:15at officialjamalroberts.
11:17Okay.
11:17I got one other question I forgot.
11:19Any requests or, hey, we might want to talk to you that you hadn't expected
11:26or like came out like, oh, like from people, companies?
11:30I kind of took Carrie Underwood's advice with the post and ghosts,
11:38so I haven't been reading too much about it.
11:41So they mean post and then get off social media.
11:43Let's get off, yeah.
11:44Don't you be in them comments.
11:45Yeah, I don't.
11:47Don't you be in them comments.
11:48People are going to say what they're going to say.
11:49Yeah.
11:49That's what it is.
11:50You just focus on the good.
11:51That's all right.
11:51All right.
