00:21So, in the beginning, the drama, the dramatic element

00:36Absolutely, I think, you know
00:39When we have JC Shandor making this movie
00:42He goes deep into character
00:46And the heart and soul of this story is a family drama
00:50It's two young boys who are sort of product of this abuse
00:56This toxic environment that they're brought up in
00:59Their father's power-hungry, greedy, Russian gangster
01:02And he wants them to take over the family business one day
01:06And they're like, we don't, you know
01:08They don't want that
01:09And there's no love there
01:11And they're protective over one another
01:13And so it takes him on this journey
01:17That ultimately Sergei becomes this vengeance sort of villainous hunter
01:25And hunts all these people down to ultimately get back at his father
01:29And becomes far worse
01:31So it's this beautiful journey of sort of evolving in front of you
01:35Where it is about father and son
01:37And it's about, you know, these two brothers that are protective and love one another
01:43Were you, Jeffrey?
01:45Yeah, I think we
01:47What was so fun about taking this from the
01:51You know, we got to create this character really from the ground up
01:54And when you go back to the source material
01:57You know, any villain's journey is sort of a
02:00It's a fun one
02:02But it does, you know, in this case kind of, you know
02:05End in villainy
02:06And in tragedy
02:07And so how does
02:09How do you tell that origin story?
02:12And how do you look back at the core dramatic elements that lead to that?
02:16And so, you know, when you look at Craven's story in the comic books
02:20You know, there is a lot of material to draw on
02:23And certainly the relationship with the father
02:25There's a relationship
02:26Which I think when people get a chance to see the film
02:28There's a relationship with his mother
02:31That certainly plays a part in this
02:34And then the ultimate relationship at the core of the whole story
02:38Is these two brothers that are just trying
02:41Like in any sort of difficult family relationship
02:45You know, you look for a lifeboat or a savior
02:48And that person in this case is his brother
02:52And, you know, we're not going to
02:53I'm not going to give away the whole story right now
02:55But I think when people see the story
02:57And the whole film in its whole
02:59It is really that relationship between the brothers
03:03That is really the most dynamic
03:06And so, yeah, we wanted to build
03:09You know, it's what I've tried to do with all my films
03:11You try and build these, like, really fun
03:13You know, really intense
03:15Really exciting action beats
03:17That give you everything you're looking for
03:19On that side of the coin
03:21But to, in the end, have them tie into character
03:26And this guy, you know, is a vigilante
03:28He thinks he's ridding the world of evil
03:31But, you know, doing it in a way
03:33That, in the end, catches up with you
03:38The movie is also a reflection of the role of the hero
03:42In your opinion, who are the real heroes today?
03:48Wow
03:49That's intense
03:50Yeah, I think off of, for me, of what I was just talking about
03:55It's like, you know, I've got a 14, 15-year-old son
03:59So I've spent the last 15 years going through a lot of these superhero movies
04:04And it always felt to me a little bit like
04:09You know, the moral at the heart of them was that, like, you're not enough
04:14Right?
04:14You have to be something else
04:16And so I think a lot of these characters in our story
04:21On, you know, we have five or six great, like, characters in this story
04:25And they're all not fully comfortable in just who they were
04:30They all want something else, you know
04:33And so, for me, in the world
04:36I think the true heroes are people that are able to take, you know, just what they've been given
04:42And then, you know, give 100% of themselves every day
04:46To actually go out in the world and try and make the world a better place
04:49And I think in a fun way
04:51Our story is kind of reflecting on that
04:54In that these folks might have all been a little better off
04:58If they had just been a little bit more comfortable with what they were given
05:07I agree with JC
05:10I mean, obviously, there are some real heroes out there
05:13But I think, you know, in our story
05:17The real tragedy is that these boys are trying to fight
05:21There's no love, right?
05:22You see the situation they have with their parents
05:25And then they're struggling to find that
05:27And they find it with one another
05:29And then it's the lengths that they would go to
05:31To kind of protect that
05:33And I think, ultimately, may have jeopardized that situation as well
05:38So it's just really interesting and complex
05:41And there's a lot of conflict and confrontation in this movie
05:44That feels like it stands out as just being something relatable
05:48So it's cool
