13:45still got a racer in him, he's still trying
13:47yeah, that's what I admire about him
13:49the most, you know, is the way that he never gives up
13:52and he still managed to have
13:53a very good lap 1 and put some
13:55performance there. And you had a lovely chat
13:57with Max as well, I saw you two were talking about
13:59the race in the pen too, that friendship
14:01you have, I listened to the Pelopistas podcast
14:03and it's a really lovely friendship and also
14:05you saying that you learnt from him when
14:07you were sim racing because he would do
14:09things perfectly and you said you learnt from that
14:11I found it really fascinating what you were saying
14:13Yeah, indeed, I mean Max, it's a great friend
14:15and I think someone, probably the one I
14:17learned the most, you know, even
14:19nowadays I talk to him about everything
14:21literally everything about my
14:23career, he's not my manager
14:25but he looks a little bit like it sometimes
14:28he's always very open with
14:29me and I'm very happy about it
14:31and I'm grateful, you know, because it's someone that
14:33he does it because he wants to
14:35help, because he doesn't gain anything by doing
14:37that and the thing
14:39I mentioned about the sim, he takes
14:41it very professionally and I feel like
14:43I've learned a lot about it because
14:45you know, you sometimes just want to have fun
14:47in the game and just throw the car around
14:49and if you crash, you crash but
14:51you realise that if you do things consistently
14:53maybe they become even better in real life
14:55obviously he still
14:57had fun in the game, you know, he still puts the car around
14:59sometimes but a lot of the times
15:01he's just being professional
15:04Talk to me about what it means to drive
15:05for Audi, it's an incredible name in
15:07motorsport and motorsport legacy
15:09It's incredible, I mean it's a huge brand
15:11and everything they have done in the sport
15:13they want, so for me it's a big
15:15responsibility to be part of Audi
15:18I'm happy that I've been able
15:19already to score the first points and put it
15:21the first time in Q3 and I feel
15:23like this team has so much potential because
15:25we are able to do this in a very
15:28enjoyable way
15:29This weekend then, I mean it's a different
15:31racetrack, it's going to be a different situation for
15:33everybody, what are your thoughts ahead of it? Have you been able
15:35to look at it and go, oh I learnt from Australia
15:37that here I'll be able to do this or...?
15:39I think you understand a few baselines
15:41hopefully I will, I took some learning
15:43off Melbourne and I will be able to apply here
15:46I think it will be a whole season of learning
15:48because every track is different
15:50every deployment is different
15:52so yeah, I feel like it will be a full
15:54season of learning

16:05This guy is obviously the start of his career
16:07I get the feeling that he's going to be
16:11enormous in this sport
16:13particularly the backing of the Brazilian ownership
16:16There's that, but there's also just the fact that he's an incredibly strong
16:20strong veteran driver
16:22I think something about Gabby that is interesting
16:24is he's just got better and better
16:26throughout his whole career
16:27I think when he started in cards it took him a little bit of time
16:29to adapt
16:30I was in the same team as him when he was in F4
16:32and he said I was taking time
16:34and he didn't quite understand how he's come out karting
16:36and it's not, you know, come to him straight away
16:38and then he goes into F3, he wins F3
16:40he goes into F2, he wins F2 in his rookie season
16:42so he's just got stronger and stronger
16:44and I think now he's in F1
16:46and the rules are changing, everything's changing
16:47he's just so quick to adapt
16:49and I think that's helping him a lot
16:50One of the reasons that Audi got back into this sport
16:54was the removal of the MGUH
16:56because they felt that it wasn't road relevant anymore
16:59ironically that's one of the biggest problems it would seem
17:03with the new regulations in terms of getting the turbos up to speed
17:07and harvesting that energy from the heat
17:10which comes from...
17:11but yeah, I mean that's been one of the issues
17:14I just wonder whether that actually may re-emerge in the fullness of time
17:18Yeah, so we blame Audi, then it's their fault
17:20but I mean it was, the MGUH answered it yesterday
17:24it was such a good piece of technology to kind of get a little bit more from these hybrid engines
17:28there is the removal of that but also we're now much greater with the 50-50 split
17:32so that is another factor
17:33but the start for example, the MGUH, the leaving the pit lane
17:37that's the high RPM and what's a little bit unusual with having to fire up the turbo to what we've
17:41seen before

18:11It's a really tricky corner to get right
18:13and I'm fascinated to see how the cars go through there this year
18:18the moment here uncles and knows
18:20Let's get me the wasted
18:34Well Bernie, we're here in China, a week after the Australian Grand Prix
18:39and it's a sprint format weekend
18:40so with these new rules and regulations
18:43how do you see it unfolding?
18:44They've only got one hour practice session for FP1
18:48Then they're straight into a sprint qualifying session
18:51That's going to be even more difficult this year
18:53New regulations not only mean they need to get the car set up correctly
18:57As a mechanically set up
18:58But also that energy management
19:00When they're going to deploy, how they're going to harvest
19:02Lots and lots for the teams and drivers
19:05To get on top of before they get that all important quality session
19:08290 metre run down towards turn one
19:11I guess we should be looking out for those Ferraris again
19:13Yeah, I think the Ferraris off the start line
19:15Really showed their performance last week
19:17But I think through the last weekend's entire event
19:20Teams and drivers learning all the time
19:22This weekend they're going to have to be on top of it much, much quicker
19:25Let's go and take a look at turn one
19:26It's one of the best bit of circuit design
19:28It's a really tricky corner to get right
19:30And I'm fascinated to see how the cars go through there this year
19:34You could be arriving here about 330, 340 kilometres an hour
19:38It's unheard of speeds from the past
19:41So yeah, new challenge for the drivers
19:43They used to have DRS down this straight
19:44Now they're going to have straight mode
19:46Both wings disengaged to give them
19:48Increase that straight line speed
19:50Before they reach this corner
19:51They're going to have to decide at what point
19:53To manually re-engage the wings
19:55To make sure they have enough downforce
19:57To get through the corners
19:58About where we're standing on the track
20:01You will still be full throttle
20:02And if you do that with your straight mode
20:03Your active aero still open
20:05You're going to have a lot less grip basically
20:07Than you're used to
20:08So that's something the drivers are definitely going to have to manage
20:11At this point in the corner
20:12You're understeering
20:14It puts a lot of load through that front left tire
20:16A lot of scrub
20:17So graining can happen through this part of the track
20:19And it's visibility wise
20:21It's very hard to then pick your line into turn two
20:24The wind and how it affects the car
20:26Really changes through the corner as well
20:27So you can feel it much, much more
20:29As we get towards the exit of turn one
20:32It's so hard to see
20:34The actual apex of two
20:35And where to pick your line
20:37Is incredibly tough
20:38The cameras never really do that elevation change justice
20:41I can only imagine
20:42When you're down in the car
20:43With all the loads going through
20:44How difficult it is to get these right
20:46These ferocious beasts
20:48With over a thousand horsepower now
20:49With that full deployment
20:50On the exit of three and four
20:52I can't wait to see how it unfolds
20:54And what it's like for the drivers
20:55Hanging on to the car
20:56On the exit of that corner
20:57Surely it's going to be very, very tough
21:01So by the time you get to this point in the circuit
21:03Into turn 14
21:04You've done a really nice sector
21:06Through sector two
21:07Driving wise
21:08I think that's the best part of the lap
21:10Through turn seven, eight
21:11The high speed chicane
21:13You hug the inside of turn eight
21:15To open up nine and ten
21:16Which is a double left hand section
21:18Before that straight takes you up to turn 11
21:21But in turn 14 itself
21:23You arrive here after this incredibly long back straight
21:27What is it? 1.2 kilometers?
21:28It's 1.2 kilometers down here
21:30And I think this apex is the highest speed
21:32That they'll see in the whole circuit
21:34So this is the opportunity for those things to go wrong
21:36And even more pressure on a sprint weekend
21:38With only that one session to get it right
21:41And then I guess the final thing to mention
21:43Is just out of that final corner
21:44A very short run to the control line
21:47To the time and line
21:47On a qualifying lap
21:48We're going to see people pushing
21:50Almost from the exit that corner
21:51So once again
21:52New challenges for these new rules and regulations
21:59About a fabulous track and we've seen so much action here over the years
22:03Now I know a lot of you at home will have been dying to hear
22:06What the 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve thinks of the new rules and regulations
22:10So for your breakfast pleasure

22:15It depends if you ask the racer
22:17Or the race fan that wants to see a good show
22:20Ultimately we had a good race in Melbourne
22:22And that's what we want to see
22:23Where the best driver will still find a way to be better with the rule set
22:28And then what we saw is
22:29It wasn't down to driving necessarily
22:31You still have quality like it was in the past
22:35It's how they were using that energy
22:37And it was a very good fight in between Leclerc and Russell
22:42And how they were figuring it out as the race was going on
22:45New set of skills
22:47And it was fun to watch
22:48Yeah but the purists will argue that it wasn't the essence
22:51The DNA of Formula 1
22:52You're not going flat out into a corner
22:55And it's the bravest on the brakes of Charles Leclerc
22:57Who's saying
22:58How do you answer that?
22:59Well as a purist I would say yes
23:01Definitely
23:03You know I still miss the days of the V10
23:06When you really had to put the other driver under pressure
23:08Push him into making a mistake to dive
23:11But racing was also different
23:13We didn't use to block
23:13And we've done the straight
23:15So that's changed
23:16But then was DRS pure racing?
23:18It wasn't
23:19Yeah okay
23:20Let's move on
23:20Let's discuss a couple of the other big teams
23:22Jamie with regards to Max Verstappen
23:25Well he's made his views clear
23:26And he's stuck to his guns
23:27There you can see him in this nice glossy shiny red bull
23:30But there was some way off last week
23:3250 odd seconds
23:33Albeit that he was starting right from the back
23:35But a long way off in FP1 too
23:38Which will be a concern
23:39Can they haul that back?
23:40They're going to have to haul something back
23:42I mean they are good at turning things around
23:43From practice into qualifying
23:45But that was more of the old era
23:47Now it's looking tricky
23:48Their ulcer degradation on the front left tyre was awful
23:51Both the cars had a huge amount of graining on the front left
23:54So they've got quite a few issues
23:55Not just for qualifying but also for the race
23:58With regards to McLaren
23:59I mean it looked like they were on a par with Ferrari
24:01We just saw
24:02We were just down at the Ferrari garage
24:03And it looks like they've changed their rear wing
24:06They've got the same power unit as Mercedes
24:08We know that they're a customer
24:10I mean does that give those fans at home real hope
24:13That they're going to be playing catch up
24:14They've got to get aggressive with their development
24:16Well they have to
24:18Last year they focused on winning the championship
24:21So maybe they didn't work as hard as Mercedes
24:25On developing this year's car
24:26And they got the engine late
24:28Like you said earlier
24:29Which means they couldn't prep it up
24:31And they're still figuring it out
24:32But their chassis is not on the Mercedes level
24:35That's where the biggest difference is
24:36I completely agree
24:38They've got to find something in the chassis
24:39Because that's where Mercedes looks wrong this weekend
24:41They really do don't they
24:43But there we go
24:44Also as we said
24:45It is a busy old sprint weekend
24:47The first of the 2026 campaign
