17:43троп-off.
Charles Leclerc.
18:38Давайте head trackside, shall we?
18:40Lots of cars out there.
18:42Jamie Chadwick,
18:47which is one of the highest
18:49commitment points of the track.

19:11И, honestly,

25:19of Piastri. But watch out for Hülkenberg
25:22this year, this weekend
25:24I should say, horses for courses, always
25:26in five of his six visits to Shanghai
25:28he's got into Q3
25:30it's another one of those tracks where he
25:32seems to go quite well at. Ted, down to you
25:34So just arguing
25:36against my own enthusiasm for
25:38the Ferrari Macarena wing
25:39are any of you
25:42Crofty and Bernie surprised that
25:44Ferrari didn't do a back
25:46to back with their Australia rear wing
25:48in this session. Because of course once we go
25:50into sprint qualifying, then it's a Park
25:52Fermet for that qualifying
25:54session and the sprint race
25:55and how are they to know that the other one
25:58isn't better? Well Ted, I think the answer
26:00to that is surely because they've only got
26:0160 minutes and they might have done
26:03if there were two practice sessions
26:05but they wanted to
26:08make sure both drivers were
26:09comfortable running with it
26:11which is why I'm a little surprised
26:14it's made its debut here
26:16after missing out
26:17in Australia and not in Japan in a couple
26:19of weeks' time. Do you have any data on the
26:21top speeds? Obviously I'm just a man
26:23down here in the pit lane
26:25do we know whether it's burning
26:26has it given that extra 5 kph
26:28on some of the top speeds on the back straight?
26:31Do you have any of that data?
26:32I don't have that in the minute Ted
26:33but let me work on that and come back
26:35to you. I will get on it
26:38I don't know if it is giving them
26:39Oh! Too much speed
26:41for Charles Leclerc as he heads off into the gravel at that final corner and it just wasn't the grip
26:48to keep him on the tarmac and that's that's why that gravel trap is there
26:53Piastri crosses the line stays third fastest it really can catch drivers out
26:58it's a real proper corner that final turn
27:02Piastri did well there actually with the
27:03X in the corner with a cloud of dust and he was the first one to arrive on the scene
27:07after Leclerc's moment and to keep the car pointing exactly where you want it and use riding right up to
27:15the curb was pretty impressive.
27:17stuff from Piastri and this is what happened to Leclerc from the onboard really sent the speed in
27:23oh he's just got that snap of oversteer mid corner like we saw earlier on with
27:28I can't remember which driver it was was it Russell? yes and that's what can happen if you
27:34if you're not quick enough to catch that slider it happens a bit more aggressively so
27:38hopefully the underside of that car is gonna be alright but I seriously doubt it
27:43that was a high-speed moment for Charles Leclerc check a flag and the session
27:48you can finish your lap if you're already on it as Lando Norris is both McLarens
27:54here on this lap not a personal best in sector one now threw away potentially too
27:58much lap time there for the personal best in the mid sector for Norris and the
28:03last sector is also very similar to that lap of Piastri so I wonder what's going on
28:07in sector one is that deployment thing across both cars it could be or we've seen
28:12that both had tricky cars through turn one very snappy and they could have been
28:16losing the time that way so well maybe I'll have a little look on the skypad
28:20after this session do you think turn one is more effective by degradation than
28:24some of the other corners it I mean you yeah it's the one that causes a lot of
28:28the degradation definitely and therefore yes it will be against working
28:33against you as you go through that corner next time around but um yeah a lot of
28:38corners here you need you need the front end or the whole way around this track
28:42and and as soon as you lose that it's uh yeah you're like I said before a
28:47passenger to the understeer Isaac Hadjar crosses the line doesn't really improve
28:52by much he's still two seconds off the pace Chinese Grand Prix is the sort of race
28:59where where car performance car pace dictates grid order across both drives you go
29:06back to 2019 here which was only the second ever example of a top ten in
29:11qualifying that comprised of teams qualifying in pairs and you've got two
29:16Mercedes two McLaren two Ferrari occupy the top six here and I wouldn't be
29:21surprised if we don't see something similar once we get to qualify for the
29:25Grand Prix look at this pragmatically Russell was the only driver there to do his
29:29time on a brand new set and get the most out of them so that's at least three or
29:34four tenths in the bag compared to others around him Antonelli's time was
29:38actually probably the most impressive because he did it on what was it three
29:41laps old you said Bernie so that that's very impressive and Norris right at the
29:45end there as well only half a second away if he had a lap like that but with new
29:51type brand new tires on probably another two he says he's right there yeah I think
29:56that's a more encouraging first practice session only practice session from the
30:01power that we maybe saw in Melbourne I think so yes you go I was actually
30:06disappointed in Ferrari's performance there I really expected them to be
30:09especially on the straights burning yeah it's given Ted's question this doesn't
30:14show industry at speed but that little graphic they're showing that Ferrari rank
30:18in fourth and fifth in terms of the overall time they're spending on the streets
30:25well and that's what a huge amount of 350 kilowatts of deployments can give you in
30:32whilst turning I think he's seen the car behind him and wanted to get out of the
30:37way and was just a bit too vigorous on the right pedal but I love stro for avoiding
30:44any contact here where do you where do you drive when you see a car where you try and
30:49keep as far to the right as you possibly can but good work there from Lance Stroll to
30:53to avoid that I think so practice starts on the grid here's Charles Leclerc who went
31:02from fourth to first by the first corner in Melbourne
31:08and as I've proven a few times already this this year Croft in testing and in
31:13racing they can even start in the third row and still be leading the race by the
31:17first corner so uh though if this was a if this was a qualifying session that's
31:23exactly where they'll be starting third row again so that's effectively pole we did
31:28take a little bet on that and test and didn't we have we had a little gas of how
31:31far back we thought the Ferrari could I think you're more confident on that than I
31:35what are you in third row we converged in the end I reckon they could do fourth row
31:42here because you've got another 20 meters into turn one that you had in Melbourne for
31:47instance a small turbo working well off the line for Ferrari and also they didn't
31:51seem to be the ones suffering with the battery not being topped up enough on the
31:55grid there they've definitely got that bit honed and one thing just to point out
31:59here is really good example you can see the grandstand is shadowing the
32:03majority of the track and just that right hand side of the grid is beginning to
32:07come into the sunlight so when with a sprint is obviously similar time of day
32:12that's going to be the case but when you get to the main race that right hand side
32:16of the grid will be full sun and it was a bit damp as well this morning so if that
32:21replicates itself that could be a disadvantage in the sprint race tomorrow
32:26sprint qualifying comes later today George Russell winner of the opening race and
32:31the man who took pole in Melbourne was fastest in this practice session only a tenth between
32:36himself and Kimi Antonelli apparent little bit closer half a second back to Lando Norris
32:41Oscar Piastri seven tenths down Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton with work to do
32:45Hamilton was getting plenty of laps in on those soft tyres at a time when others weren't
32:51after flat spotting earlier Behrman Verstappen Hülkenberg Gasly completing the top ten Liam Lawson just outside of the top ten
32:58Gabriel Bortoletto and Isaac Hadjar Esteban Alcon and Franco Colopinto who had a spin early on and then stops in
33:05the pit lane too
33:06Albon science who took a while to get going data issues with his car then Alonso Bottas strolled
33:13Lindblad and Perez Lindblad didn't get a run on the soft tyre his car stopped early on
33:18he's on the back foot but Mercedes very much front foot forwards as we head to sprint qualifying
33:29indeed they are plenty of experimentation a few offs lots of snaps tire degradation
33:36Mercedes looking incredibly good will that translate into sprint qualifying this is the plan the rest of the weekend
33:48this may be the daftest question anyone's ever asked you but why did you move here
33:53why not well it's to me this is paradise it's so nice to have a place in Australia my better
34:01half
34:01Tiffany is from Australia close by from here and yeah I've been looking for a place for a couple of
34:06years now it's not a bad holiday home I have to say do you know what Chinese year it is
34:10yes I know
34:12the fire horse fire horse yeah if we harness the fire horse well there's nothing to fear
34:20I love the intensity in which you said that sentence I felt it deep
34:30what are we saying do you like it oh yeah this is really good what's gonna happen if I eat
34:35this
34:36chili might be a bit spicy I go for it yeah yeah whole thing yeah iron stomach Arvid yeah iron
34:43stomach
34:44built built for Indian food don't you worry about me son I'll be fine have another one
34:52and we'll try and get to the bottom of what happened to Arvid's car in a couple moments time when
34:57we hear from his boss
34:58Alan Permain sprint qualifying from 10 to 7 enjoy that over your breakfast this Friday morning
35:05and perhaps you want to do the same with qualifying on Saturday the sprint is from 2.25 in the
35:10morning
35:10qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix 6.30 on air
35:15and on Sunday at 5.30 for a 7am lights out we always love this track provides lots of drama
35:22it chews through the tyres but the class of the field at the moment once again George Russell
35:291.32.741 Kimi Antonelli right up there alongside him but with the McLaren of Lando Norris getting within
35:36a half a second but were they driving within themselves we shall discuss that in a couple
35:42of minutes time
35:55welcome back only a sole hour of practice before we head into sprint qualifying and the Mercedes
36:01looking extremely comfortable Jamie and Jack at that session
36:05they did and it just looks not comfortable is the wrong word because I'm sure driving a Formula One
36:10car is never comfortable but smooth and I think they're able to get the most out of it because
36:15they're able to not have to go to that last little bit of the limit I think watching both cars
36:19out there
36:20more on George's side he's able to get the most out of that first lap because I think he's able
36:24to be
36:24consistent to have good feeling with the car and as a result yeah the difference at the moment is
36:29it's pretty big you're right it looks like they can keep that tiny little margin that allows them to drive
36:33smoothly
36:34and normally that allows you to set the car up better during the weekend to push and end up going
36:38faster and
36:39faster and faster and they have that they have an amazing chassis because the next Mercedes engine is what half
36:45a second behind and
36:46they are the world champions is it does it remind you slightly of of when we got into the new
36:52turbo hybrid era in
36:542014 it's just got that feeling about it they you know they came in they're extremely confident they were straight
36:59out the box fast and as
37:02you said they're just there they're at the top of the timesheets in first and second again
37:06exactly and that's what George has kind of alluded to as well I think he's driven that car of previous
37:11and
37:11he said the difference is incredible and he can tell when you get in a car in the first three
37:15or four
37:16laps if it's going to be a competitive car or not and he straight away knew and that was before
37:20I think
37:20you find out all the differences in you know deployment and all these other things so I think
37:24chassis wise mechanically at a track like this they seem in a really good window and then you add on
37:29top of
37:29that what we seem to think is the efficiency of the engine it's a really really strong package yeah but
37:34there's a
37:35a slight difference from from those days in the past is back then and it was the lewis team uh
37:40with a
37:40teammate uh it then it was all engine they didn't even need to have a good chassis and they and
37:45every
37:46time someone was getting closer they would just boost up the power a bit now the engine is good but
37:50they
37:50also have an amazing chassis uh and and that gives an edge that they probably can keep for for a
37:55while and
37:55and right now also it is the the two drivers are pure total wolf and mercedes projects uh it's not
38:02lewis and
38:02a teammate that the two drivers that mercedes have groomed they are mercedes drivers uh but also
38:07we talked about kimmy keeping george honest it was it was a great turnaround last weekend and the
38:13fact is what's that five lap old tires five five lap old sauce i think to be within a tenth
38:18of his
38:19teammate or slightly newer tires and that's what he needs to do if we're thinking about what kimmy
38:24needs to do to stay on the shoulder of the more experienced driver within mercedes it is this all the
38:30time
38:30pressure pressure pressure isn't it exactly and kimmy's raw pace has been super impressive this
38:35year if you look at australia qualifying that car hadn't been on a setup patch before the session he's
38:40obviously a little bit bruised after the crash and he goes out and he's within two tenths or not within
38:44within three tenths of of george here a tenth but not doing it on the first lap so if he
38:49tidies
38:49everything up and can have the sort of execution that george has now and in his sort of mature years
38:55of
38:55formula one i think he'll be in a really strong place take you back to 96 and um damon had
39:00had a
39:01world championship opportunity in 1994 and you know he was the more experienced driver then what
39:07what were you doing in in kimmy's shoes were you just trying to push by session i mean you came
39:12out
39:12of the box and took yeah i was i was also trying to make the car mine yeah to to
39:16get more and more
39:18important inside the team so that instead of the development going towards damon's way he would start
39:23going more and more towards my way and that's an important part and parcel of a driver being quick
39:28and beating his teammate right let's bring in alan permain the racing bulls chief um first of all
39:34harvard's car uh not sure till we get it back it sort of switched off um so we lost everything
39:41the telemetry um the whole lot the the steering wheel shut down and everything stopped engine switched
39:48off so until we get it back and uh see where it is it could be something from as simple
39:52as a switch to
39:53change everything so we don't know where we are but we'll have it we'll have it back very soon you
39:57will okay i mean that's the thing isn't it with these with these new rules and regulations we're
40:01talking about it with the mechanics alan and maybe you say from the engineering perspective as well
40:05it's not like you've had four years to get used to rebuilding cars diagnosing problems how much more
40:11of a problem is that this year uh i think it's early days still honestly i think this sort of
40:16stuff
40:16could happen with with with the last generation of cars it looks like and it's some sort of
40:21electrical reset so as i say it fingers crossed it's something pretty simple but obviously we
40:26need to get it back as soon as we can and understand what that is were you able to get
40:30much learning from
40:30that session obviously uh liam has been here before and ran avid hasn't but were you still able to get
40:36many laps yes liam did a full program so um we did a little bit of uh race prep learning
40:42on that on that
40:42medium tire and then some quality prep at the end on the soft um we got a bit of work
40:47to do we're not
40:48quite where we want to be but we're not bad i think he was 11th at the end of the
40:51session liam so uh
40:52still in the ballpark well your rookie driver had a good showing in the first race but we've often
40:57seen that in the first race of some of a driver's career young get to for adrenaline and do an
41:02amazing result and then collapse is he the real deal do you think that's something you get the
41:06training can carry on i'm sure he can i don't know if the real deal after one race is uh
41:10it would be
41:10would be an extraordinary claim but but he's he's talented there's absolutely no doubt he's calm
41:17he's bright um yeah i think he can i think he can put it all together you just said something
41:23important you said he's bright is that a skill set that is even more important now with the new
41:29rule set because in qualifying it's fine they just drive it's all calculated in advance but race they
41:33have to adapt to figure out when to use it but i think it's it's helped for years hasn't it
41:37been having
41:38a bit of spec capacity in the car with with uh even these rules the last year's rules all all
41:46the rules
41:46before 2014 i think having a bit of spare capacity as a driver is just is a benefit especially in
41:53the
41:53race so you know with tired egg and things like that so uh i i is it more important now
41:59possibly
42:00but i don't think it's ever not been important alan can i just quickly ask you from from your
42:05perspective obviously same up and down um the pit lane we moved from australia very different track to
42:10shanghai uh and now it's a sprint race weekend tell us the different challenges and the
42:16specifics of of shanghai and what we should be looking out for what the fans should be looking
42:19out for yeah it's it's it's uh as you've probably read and heard it's a much more energy rich track
42:25for the for the pus so that side of things should be a lot easier it's a track last year
42:30where if you
42:31remember in the sprint race everyone i think apart from lewis suffered from heavy front uh left front
42:36tie graining so our focus whilst learning again how to manage the pus on a different track on i think
42:43the fourth track we've run on um is very much on tires and making sure we've got a a setup
42:49on the
42:49car that is is good for over a single lap but also protects the the left front tire in the
42:54race points
42:55the target this weekend obviously but do you think you could get a decent haul uh yes i think we've
43:01we've
43:01got the car to to be certainly in the mix with the we're we're i think we're two tenths from
43:05bear
43:05minute in that in that session and that wasn't our best session so i think we've got a good chance
43:09of
43:09being in the top 10. best luck alan we'll let you get and diagnose the problem on ovid limblad's car
43:14he finished in eight last weekend just ahead of him uh ollie bearman who was seventh in that session as
43:20i said where he finished last weekend before fp won there he talked with ted hi ollie welcome to
43:27shanghai china year of the horse it says up there i hope so oh what you mean because you've got
43:34a horse in
43:35the back of your car exactly did you know there's not a year of the bear in chinese uh culture
43:40that's
43:41a shame but in where we go next the bear in japan is a very significant animal animal yeah yeah
43:50yeah
43:51i did not know that it's feared it's dangerous but then it's revered and and sacred the sacred
43:57bear um how's life how was australia for you uh life's good i i had a good start to the
44:06year
44:06definitely better than 12 months ago uh which probably isn't that hard but um you know we
44:11started the season well the team have worked incredibly hard to get us to a point um to get
44:16us on track even in fp1 and and you know that's uh definitely easier said than done so to kind
44:22of
44:22reward them with a p7 finish to reward them with some points to reward them with showing how all
44:28of that work over the winter has has paid off and and that we have a car that um on
44:33its on its day is
44:34is in a good position is a really special feeling and i think has filled everyone with confidence and
44:39also has given an energy boost to everyone which is definitely needed after the big uh and busy pre-season
44:44yeah um and tell us about the whole weekend from a start um was was it was it quite frantic
44:50in
44:51doing the practice sessions in terms of learning how your modes are going to work and all of that
44:56and sort of look forward to this weekend only having one practice session might make it uh um
45:01interesting yeah that could potentially uh be challenging um you know that that to be honest
45:09the the help that and kind of input that ferrari has given us on the on the engine side of
45:13things
45:14has been invaluable and very useful um because i i've heard stories of other teams we've had a bit more
45:21challenges with that so you know we've had really a lot of help and guidance from ferrari and and
45:26honestly i must say that from lap two or three and fp1 everything was working very well and that's
45:32obviously incredibly important and that fills me with confidence for you know heading into a weekend
45:37like this where we're not going to have many laps to practice before going into qualifying and then
45:41talking of qualifying in australia i think it was 12 and 13. did you feel there was a bit more
45:46time in
45:46the car or that was about that was about it um you know on that track uh i felt like
45:52there was a
45:52there's always a bit of time especially for the first qualifying so not having my battery in the
45:57perfect state yeah not having probably the perfect deployment because we probably didn't react
46:02perfectly to the track evolution all of these things that was definitely some lap time in it but
46:06i think that was the case for everyone if i'm honest i would say um you know i mean i'm
46:12interested to
46:13see how we stand on a track like this because generally we looked a bit stronger in bahrain where
46:18energy is a bit more plentiful uh you know in australia it's not the case lots of lifting
46:22curves lots of uh weird things that you have to do to to get enough energy to do the lap
46:27so yeah uh with
46:29that not being the case i'm interested to see how do we look uh this weekend so i'm reserving my
46:33judgment
46:34but i was uh positively positively surprised by the pace that we had in the race given that in
46:39qualifying we look to be behind audi and v-carb yeah well from 12th to to 7th was was brilliant
46:45and and well 12th to 25th and to 7th yeah i had a terrible start oh you did yes of
46:50course i was
46:51going to ask about how the start went why what was your fault what did you do well basically when
46:55the
46:56when the you know the blue lights we have now which which the get set prepare us exactly the get
47:01set
47:01period um when the blue lights went out i dropped the clutch because kind of out of habit you know
47:07when
47:07you see lights go out in front of you you go yeah uh but obviously those were the blue lights
47:11not
47:11the lights for the for the real start so then my revs died and my turbo died and everything died
47:16and and i i lost a lot of space on the start totally my fault um but less than land
47:21and then the
47:22fight with uh with arvid as you as you as you great pace showed your way back through um that
47:27was
47:28one did you use boost to get past him or was there a tire offset no i used i you
47:32i mean it took me
47:33about 30 laps to get past him we had no we we boxed on the same lap i had a
47:37bit more pace but um i i
47:39used the boost button uh to its full effect and once you got through were you relatively sure that
47:46he wouldn't just boost you back what did you think about where are we going to do it so he
47:50doesn't
47:50just boost you well i i felt like that engine and that power unit i felt like they had an
47:54extra battery
47:55hidden somewhere because uh you know you you can kind of get a feeling of what the others oh hi
48:00ronan
48:00uh you can kind of that's my engineer you can kind of get a feeling on what the others are
48:04doing
48:04yeah uh based on the the lights uh you know on on the rear of the car and you know
48:10they were
48:11give lance some room here hello yes carry on um so so he was deploying all of his energy into
48:17turn one
48:18but i did the same and managed to do the overtake so then i had no battery anymore but i
48:22thought that
48:23he would have even less because he didn't have the overtake mode uh or what is it called the override
48:27mode
48:27i don't know uh yes the mode that you get when you follow someone closely overtake that's it anyway
48:33so he but but then he flew back past me again in turn three so it was it was a
48:38bit strange but um
48:40they were very very fast in the straights last weekend uh so we're trying to really understand
48:44how can we do a better job on on overtake overtaking and using the battery pack to its to its
48:49fullest
48:50well listen you've done a pretty good job so far p7 in the opening round best of the rest
48:53um in terms of this your second full year in f1 have you noticed already even though we're only a
49:01race
49:01down a little change in yourself more assured knowing what's happening more comfortable and
49:07that leads to more speed yeah i i wouldn't say i'm a faster driver you know in terms of driving
49:13ability
49:13nothing has changed but i'm definitely more assured and more understanding i've i've taken a big step in
49:19the maturity as well uh so with the team you know even on a thursday i know how to utilize
49:24my time
49:24i understand what the goals are for fp1 tomorrow and and you know every session of the weekend and
49:29that allows me to be more productive and use every lap to the maximum so i've definitely taken a big
49:34step in that regard and i'm looking forward to seeing how that develops throughout the year okay
49:38we'll let you go thanks very much thank you more bear action to come fingers crossed maybe here in china
49:42thanks ollie already got it jamie i've got the feeling he's um he's waiting in the wings but he
49:50just cannot wait to get back into that ferrari again yes he's been given that sort of uh little
49:56bit on his first debut exactly that's it um but equally i think we saw with george russell he spent
50:01maybe a year too long at williams but it in the long run didn't do him didn't do him any
50:06harm so i think
50:07he can use these years to continue learning not with the pressure of uh being in the big team and
50:13it's not a bad thing for him i think he's going to have a very long career obviously in the
50:16sport so
50:17it's not a bad thing it's taking a little bit of time but equally uh yeah he's flying at the
50:21moment
50:21and super impressive playstation generation just a quick one on the final turn we saw uh one of the
50:26ferrari drivers he wasn't the only one but charlotte claire uh into that gravel at the end why is it
50:30so
50:31difficult quite a lot of them are getting kicks there aren't they because it's a pointy corner it's not
50:35a round corner you carry speed start turning wait for the car to slow down there you really have
50:39to hit it perfectly you have to throw the car and pivot the car and it's easy to get caught
50:43out and
50:44equally it's uh one of the few left-handers where the front right isn't screaming at them and suddenly
50:49it hooks up which is not the feeling they have in a lot of the other corners on the lap
50:53um just quick one then get heading into sprint qualifying obviously mercedes are strong favorites
50:58do we think it's nice to see mclaren you know sort of relatively back i mean on a par at
51:04least with
51:04the ferrari so i just kicked your foot there very hard yeah well they'll be they'll be looking at
51:07the front tires because a lot of a lot of drivers at graining some more than others so that that's
51:12what they will be working on and use that sprint race as a practice for the main race completely
51:17agree i think they've not got much time now so uh yeah need to to get on with it this
51:21afternoon
51:21like that's crazy the uh the the first practice session time's not too far off what they were
51:27last year so there we go just shows you uh i wonder what to expect though from uh sq1 f1
51:34academy
51:35qualifying uh is from five past six we'll be back from ten to seven get your bowl of shreddies or
51:42your
51:42favorite breakfast cereal ready and enjoy sprint qualifying with us here in china bye
51:47bye
