Charles Leclerc
01:13Да, вот, на top of your screen
Hamilton
01:52These drivers
01:52Are getting
01:53The most
01:54Out of their tyres
03:23и П12, и П13, и П12.

12:27And Bernie Collins, there's a different run plan going on here
12:31between the five that we've seen and the five that we're about to see.
12:35Yeah, exactly, Colty.
12:36That's just what I was going to come in with.
12:37Only five cars on track.
12:38How unusual for Quali 3 session.
12:41These five that have done a lap,
12:43the five that have lap times on the board there,
12:45they're going to do a single cool and then another push lap.
12:48Is that soft tyre up to it?
12:50The other five have only got one single opportunity
12:54to get that soft lap on the board.
12:57So any mistakes, any lock-ups is going to be very, very crucial
13:02for these five leaving the Petlian 9.
13:04However, Anthony Davidson, the five that are coming out now
13:08have very nice, shiny new tyres
13:10that have not had anything to stress them for a while.
13:13They've been tucked in their blankets
13:15and they've got the advantage from that.
13:16The track has rubbed in even further
13:18from the cars previously out on circuit.
13:21I personally would have wanted as a driver
13:23to do exactly what McLaren are doing here,
13:26to give yourself the best chance of the track being at its best.
13:30I know it's just one lap,
13:31but the tyres are only good enough for one lap at this stage anyway.
13:34I'd want to use all the juice from those tyres,
13:36have trust in my own abilities,
13:39and do it when the circuit's at its best.
13:41which makes complete sense.
13:44The only thing I would say is,
13:46you're going from mediums to softs,
13:48so do you need two bites at the cherry?
13:50It's always easier to go up on grip than down on grip.
13:54So, it's a nice surprise to have in that way.
13:58The only mistake you can make is not brake late enough
14:00or put your foot down early enough.
14:02It's as simple as that.
14:03I've got too much grip.
14:04Oh, lovely.
14:05So, I mean, it's always easier.
14:08Any racing driver will say,
14:09give me more grip,
14:10I'll adapt to it quicker than taking the grip away.
14:12And I don't quite know why that is,
14:14but that seems to be the way it goes.
14:16Once again, Antonelli and Russell,
14:18barely anything between them in the first sector.
14:21Russell, that final sector from George Russell,
14:24he might have had a little bit more battery to play with.
14:26He might have just saved a little bit.
14:29Kimi Antonelli, the battery draining all the way down
14:31quite early on in the straight,
14:33but that was quite a big margin,
14:36given how close they were together.
14:39And also, if you take more juice out of the tyres
14:41on the first sector,
14:43you pay the price in the third sector as well.
14:45But, you know, it is a very tricky one,
14:47that final break-in zone.
14:49I say final break-in zone.
14:50The big break-in zone into turn 14
14:53that we're coming up to now.
14:54A lot can go wrong there in terms of lap time.
14:57It looked to me like Antonelli
14:59was right on the money there.
15:01But George Russell behind once again,
15:03but neither of them, Crofty,
15:05putting in a personal best.
15:06No, they're not far off it,
15:08but no personal best on this lap so far.
15:11Kimi Antonelli needs to go faster.
15:13He can get another lap in if the tyres are there.
15:15He stays second on the grid.
15:18Another front row may be coming his way,
15:20but Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
15:22have both matched each other
15:23and gone as quick as the Mercedes
15:25in the first sector.
15:27Russell crosses the line,
15:28doesn't improve on his time either.
15:29Charles Leclerc is on a much better lap
15:32than he was first time around in this SQ3.
15:35Max Verstappen is just starting his latest lap,
15:38so he's left it late there.
15:40Leclerc crosses the line,
15:41stays fourth fastest behind his teammate,
15:44Lewis Hamilton.
15:45Gasly's out there and Norris is out there.
15:47Pierre Gasly, you can see on your screen
15:50and just coming off the final bend was,
15:52the bend at the top, by the way,
15:53was Lando Norris.
15:55The middle sector was about a tenth Lando Norris
15:59ahead of Oscar Piastri.
16:01So they could well challenge for the second row,
16:04maybe even a front row start here for McLaren.
16:07Gasly to the line for Alpine.
16:08We'll see the checkered flag.
16:10Goes fifth fastest ahead of his former teammate,
16:13Max Verstappen.
16:14Now, all eyes to Lando Norris.
16:16Looking for a second pole in a Shanghai sprint,
16:18but it's P3 for him,
16:19and he goes ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
16:22Oscar Piastri had a better first sector
16:24and has a slight advantage,
16:26but doesn't want to go in much further to the right.
16:28It was a good exit, but he's lost time
16:30and it's fifth fastest only for Oscar Piastri.
16:34Isaac Hadjar will be next across the line.
16:36He was P3 on the grid in Melbourne
16:38for the first qualifying of the season.
16:40Not the greatest exit out of the final corner
16:42and only tenth fastest for Isaac Hadjar.
16:45Disappointment as he's outqualified by Oli Behrman
16:47and also Max Verstappen.
16:50It's a Mercedes front row here
16:52and McLaren laid down the charge,
16:55Ferrari laid down the charge,
16:57but he led every single session did this man
17:01and for the first time in his Formula 1 career
17:03takes a sprint pole.
17:06Okay, nice job.
17:07First P1.
17:08Good job.
17:12Nice and relaxed
17:13because you don't hand out the points on a Friday.
17:16Yeah, good job by George as well.
17:18You know, a very well-executed day so far
17:22by him and, you know, he should be proud of the job he's done
17:25and not just in the car, Crofty,
17:27but out of the car as well.
17:28The way he's integrated with the team
17:31really pushed everyone on in the team
17:34at the end of last year in towards this year
17:36and it's paying dividends.
17:39So, you know,
17:40I've always been impressed with the way George has driven
17:43and I think now I asked Toto,
17:46when was it, years ago,
17:47if you give this guy the best car
17:49or a car good enough,
17:51worthy enough for a world championship,
17:52could he deliver?
17:53And he's answered simply,
17:54absolutely yes, he could.
17:55Yeah, Mercedes had their eye on George Russell
17:58from a long, long time ago
18:00and they felt he was the real deal
18:02and it's coming to fruition
18:04at the start of this 2026 season.
18:06Once again, it's a Mercedes front row lockout
18:09as it was in Melbourne, of course,
18:11for the Grand Prix.
18:12In the background, you can see Max Verstappen
18:14who clearly not happy with the handling
18:17and the performance of his car for Red Bull.
18:19At the track where they took their first ever pole
18:21in Formula One,
18:21only eighth and tenth on the grid for this sprint race.
18:24A lot of learning, I think,
18:26to be done in the sprint tomorrow
18:27and points go down at two-eighth.
18:30Philando Norris, P3,
18:32never completed a session in the top four
18:34in the whole of Melbourne,
18:36so that's a sign of progression there for McLaren
18:39and he'll line up alongside Lewis Hamilton.
18:41Wow, Norris had an absolute shocker here last year,
18:44last time around, didn't he, Crofty?
18:45So he's really turned things around
18:47in terms of his driving
18:48coming back to this very circuit.
18:51But, yeah, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli,
18:53what will be of Kimi Antonelli's day?
18:56I still fear for the stewards' decision.
18:59Yeah, it could yet be a front row for Lando Norris.
19:02It could yet be P3 for Lewis Hamilton.
19:04The stewards will look at a possible impeding
19:07Antonelli on Norris.
19:09And also, big shout-out to Pierre Gasly as well,
19:12getting the Alpine up there into P7,
19:13a great day for him and Oli Baerman P9.
19:19So they get weighed at the end.
19:23Lando looks around to see a packed grandstand.
19:27But a much better showing then for McLaren.
19:31For Lewis Hamilton, he out-qualifies Charles Leclerc
19:33in the sprint here for the second consecutive season.
19:36And I think it means that Charles Leclerc
19:38will start P6 as he has done
19:42for the last two Chinese Grands Prix.
19:45He knows what it's like to start from P6.
19:47But don't discount Ferrari leading at the Turn 1,
19:50even from 4th and 6th on the grid,
19:53given the starts that they've had.
19:55Gasly, by the way,
19:56first time he's ever got in beyond SQ1
19:58here in China.
20:00And that is 1.7 seconds.
20:02Max Verstappen is adrift of sprint pole.
20:06That shows you the deficit
20:08that Red Bull will need to make up.
20:11Good job by Pajar as well.
20:13Not too far away
20:14from the four-time world champion teammate of his.
20:18Yeah, but down in 10th,
20:19that's not where they would have wanted to be.
20:22Jamie Chadwick has grabbed the microphone
20:25to talk to the top three.
20:27George, you've been lighting up the time screens all day.
20:29Now you're on sprint pole.
20:31Talk us through the session.
20:32Yeah, I mean, firstly, hello to all the fans in China.
20:35There's been amazing support for everybody here.
20:39It's special to be back.
20:40And, yeah, the car's been feeling amazing.
20:42We knew after Melbourne, we had a really good car.
20:44The engine's performing really well.
20:46And today it was a real joy to drive.
20:49So happy.
20:50I'm intrigued to know what the lap times are
20:52compared to last year
20:53because it felt really quick
20:55and that was pretty cool.
20:57Very different to Melbourne.
20:58They're not so far off.
20:59I think about a second.
21:00But you're a very popular man here in China.
21:02How special is it to be here
21:03and also to drive a qualifying lap at this circuit?
21:06Yeah, it's been really surreal seeing so many blue caps
21:09and so much support in the grandstand.
21:11So I've sort of embraced a little bit of the culture
21:14of my special helmets over the last couple of years.
21:17So I think that's been appreciated.
21:19And looking ahead to tomorrow,
21:21you've not got the fast starting price quite so close,
21:23but how confident are you?
21:25Well, we've been, since Melbourne,
21:27everything we've been working on
21:28is just trying to get off the line better.
21:29What we can do, I think we've found some improvements.
21:33Melbourne was obviously slightly dicier
21:35in the opening laps than we would have liked.
22:05But I guess we'll find out in the morning.
22:06But both of them are George Russell clear
22:08of Lando Norris,
22:10the nearest rival outside of Mercedes,
22:12by six tenths.
22:13And then about another couple of hundreds
22:16to Lewis Hamilton.
22:18They will start three and four.
22:20Piastro and Eau Claire, five and six.
22:22But that's the man on sprint pole.
22:24Here's the plan for the rest of the weekend.
22:29This may be the daftest question
22:31anyone's ever asked you,
22:32but why did you move here?
22:34Why not?
22:35Well, it's, um, to me, this is paradise.
22:39It's so nice to have a place in Australia.
22:41My better half, Tiffany, is from Australia,
22:43close by from here.
22:44And, yeah, I've been looking for a place
22:46for a couple of years now.
22:47It's not a bad holiday home, I have to say.
22:50Do you know what Chinese year it is?
22:51Yes, I know.
22:53The horse. Fire horse, yeah.
22:55If we harness the fire horse well,
22:58there's nothing to fear.
23:01I love the intensity
23:02in which you said that sentence.
23:04I felt it deep.
23:11What were you saying?
23:12Do you like it?
23:13Oh, this is really good.
23:15What's going to happen if I eat this chili?
23:17Might be a bit spicy.
23:19Can I go for it?
23:19Yeah, yeah.
23:20Whole thing?
23:21Yeah.
23:22Iron stomach, Arvid.
23:23Yeah?
23:24Iron stomach.
23:25Built for Indian food.
23:26Don't you worry about me, son.
23:27I'll be fine.
23:28Have another one.
23:32He's not got an iron stomach.
23:33I've been having dinner with him.
23:35But there we go.
23:36Right, that's the details
23:36for the rest of the weekend.
23:39The Chinese Grand Prix sprint
23:40is from 2.25 in the morning.
23:43We're also simulcasting, by the way,
23:46with the F1 kids.
23:47That's from 2.55 just before
23:49we see cars on track.
23:51That's on Sky Sports Plus
23:52on Saturday qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix.
23:55You can't stay awake for the sprint,
23:56but try it.
23:566.30, which is much more sociable,
23:59as I mentioned,
24:00to enjoy over your bowl of cereal.
24:02Same on Sunday, 5.30.
24:04Lights out at 7 o'clock.
24:06And again, the F1 kids simulcast,
24:08which will be on plus again
24:09from 5 to the hour.
24:14George Russell, well,
24:16he's come out of the blocks
24:17with all guns blazing
24:19and has not really put a foot wrong
24:21in any sessions so far in 2026.
24:25He leads the championship
24:26for the first time in his career.
24:27He's on pole for the Shanghai Sprint,
24:29and we hope to hear from his boss
24:31when we return.
24:46First career sprint pole position
24:48for George Russell.
24:50Let's listen in.
24:51Have a look.
25:46There we go.
25:47Well done.
25:48George Russell,
25:49third British driver
25:49on the sprint pole
25:50on three Shanghai Sprint races,
25:52Norris in 2024,
25:53Lewis Hamilton in 2025,
25:57Jamie Chadwick and Jacques Villeneuve.
25:59With me, Jacques.
26:00Yeah, and we talked about this before.
26:01He was doing it in Australia
26:03and in FP1,
26:04just driving well within himself,
26:06it would seem.
26:07You can see that
26:08there's still a tenth in there.
26:10He doesn't have to push
26:11to his home limit,
26:12to the car's limit.
26:13He can keep a tiny little margin.
26:15The driving is perfect.
26:16It's nice.
26:16It's easy.
26:17Whenever he wants to go quick,
26:18it's quick.
26:19That shows the car
26:19that was well born
26:20and designed
26:21with a lot of his input.
26:22He doesn't put a foot wrong,
26:23as I was mentioning
26:24before the break.
26:25In any session in 2026,
26:27that's how comfortable he is
26:29in the cockpit of that car.
26:30It's clinical.
26:31And I think that's
26:32when you've got confidence
26:33in the chassis,
26:34and he clearly does.
26:35I think mechanically,
26:36the way that that car is working,
26:38he's got a lot of trust
26:39and confidence in it,
26:39which most of the grid don't,
26:41to be honest,
26:41which makes a big difference.
26:43But honestly,
26:44I think also he's able to,
26:45exactly as Jack says,
26:46leave that tiny bit of margin
26:48so he doesn't need to go
26:49to that nth sort of degree
26:50of kind of risk,
26:51which is what I feel like
26:52maybe his teammate
26:53feels like he has to do.
26:54And then you see this yo-yo effect.
26:55You see, you know,
26:56sectors cropping up
26:57that are purple sectors
26:58here and there,
26:59but then yellow
26:59or making mistakes.
27:00He's able to have
27:01this kind of clinical approach
27:03and as a result,
27:04just constantly delivering.
27:06When you are the works team,
27:07I just wonder about this.
27:09The difference between Melbourne,
27:12which was energy poor,
27:13if you like,
27:14and this one where there is energy,
27:16you know, it's energy,
27:17how do I say it?
27:18What do I say?
27:19What's the opposite of energy poor?
27:20Energy rich.
27:22Energy rich, thank you.
27:23That's what I was thinking.
27:24Very nice.
27:24It is actually the word as well.
27:26It is, yeah.
27:28But in terms of the systems
27:29as a works team,
27:31they've got a handle on it
27:32earlier than others,
27:33haven't they?
27:33In the harvesting
27:34and the deployment
27:35and therefore,
27:37I wonder if that's why
27:38they have a big advantage
27:39at the moment.
27:40It helps to get the ball rolling
27:42because you hit the ground
27:44at speed already running
27:45where the other ones
27:46they have to start from scratch,
27:47you know,
27:48get the start going.
27:49But also,
27:50they have all the people
27:51that actually designed the system.
27:53So it's very quick
27:54to have answers.
27:55Yeah.
27:56I completely agree.
27:57I think that's the thing.
27:58They've come out the blocks
27:59with a car that is efficient.
28:01The engine is efficient.
28:02They know exactly
28:02what they've got.
28:03They've known for a long time
28:04and what they're going to have
28:05because they've designed it in-house.
28:07And then I think
28:07the chassis is working very well.
28:09I think mechanically
28:10that car is super strong,
28:11as I said before.
28:12So they're in a very good window
28:14with two drivers as well.
28:15Although Kimi's a little bit
28:16further away that session,
28:18always right there.
28:19OK, about three tenths back
28:21to Kimi Antonelli,
28:22but let's get the views
28:23of his Mercedes team.
28:26Kimi,
28:27P2 at the end of that one.
28:28How do you sum up
28:28the session from your side?
28:29Another one too
28:30for Mercedes.
28:31Yeah, no, no.
28:32The pace is very strong.
28:35Just didn't put the lap together
28:36at the end
28:36on the soft.
28:37So, yeah,
28:39still work to do.
28:40But obviously,
28:41congrats to George
28:41and all to play for tomorrow.
28:43Yeah, looking forward
28:44to the sprint tomorrow.
28:45Another chance to go at it.
28:46How are you feeling
28:47in the car in general?
28:48Where do you think
28:49maybe those couple of tenths
28:50are missing at the moment?
28:51I mean,
28:52I'm feeling good in the car.
28:53So, you know,
28:54there's obviously
28:56it's more about details
28:57trying to put all together.
28:58But, yeah,
29:00tomorrow we'll try
29:00to have a good start
29:01and then try to have
29:02a good quality.
29:04Jack, again,
29:05let's go back to Kimi
29:06and we'll finish
29:07that conversation
29:07we're having earlier
29:08in the day
29:08with regards to being
29:09the young and experienced
29:11driver against someone
29:12who's clearly,
29:13you know,
29:13at the top of his game
29:14right now.
29:15Tidying up mistakes.
29:16What's his priority list
29:17for this year?
29:19To, right now,
29:20to manage to get
29:21to the same speed
29:21as George
29:22without having to push
29:23as hard as he is
29:24because right now
29:25he has to push harder
29:26to get close.
29:27So he is lacking
29:28a little bit.
29:29But you've seen it last year.
29:30He's driving us more erratic,
29:31more aggressive,
29:32more steering input.
29:33And that always
29:34eats up a few tenths.
29:36Completely agree.
29:37I think it just feels
29:38a little bit harder
29:39to find the lap time
29:40for Kimi.
29:41It's there.
29:41He has so much raw speed
29:42and when he does push
29:43and he does find it,
29:45it comes.
29:45But just always
29:46in the sort of wrong places
29:47and not quite fully put together.
29:48But we saw in Melbourne,
29:50you know,
29:50when he needed to
29:51and the pressure was on,
29:52he delivered.
29:52He's a bit fortunate
29:54that none of the other teams
29:55are challenging them
29:55too much at the moment
29:56because three tenths
29:58easily could have had
29:59two or three other cars
30:00in there.
30:00but still,
30:01he's going to learn
30:02from one of the best
30:02on a Saturday
30:03which is George
30:03and I think that's going
30:04to make him strong
30:05later in the year.
30:06Okay,
30:06just waiting,
30:06standing by for Toto,
30:07let's get the views
30:08of the McLaren camp.
30:11It's good to see a smile
30:11on your face.
30:12Does that feel better
30:13even though we heard
30:14maybe you lost a little bit
30:15of deployment on the straight?
30:17Yeah,
30:18I'm just happy
30:19with the result.
30:20I've not seen
30:21what I lost and gained
30:22or whatever
30:22but no,
30:23P3 is as good
30:24as we can do
30:25for the time being.
30:26I'm actually pretty happy
30:27to beat both
30:28the Ferraris today
30:28because they seem
30:29pretty good
30:30the whole day,
30:30you know,
30:31so no,
30:32satisfied,
30:33good position
30:33for tomorrow.
30:35Certainly,
30:35things have been
30:36better this weekend
30:37just because
30:38the track's a lot
30:39more simple
30:39from that side of things,
30:40from a power unit
30:41side of things,
30:42so everyone kind of
30:43falls in line a bit more
30:44but we certainly
30:45seem to get a good amount
30:46out of it at the end
30:47and it was close
30:47so a good lap
30:49put me in a good position.
30:50You're one of the teams
30:51we've seen have
30:52some good starts lately.
30:53Is that your best
30:53opportunity against
30:54these Mercedes?
30:56I mean,
30:56I don't expect them
30:57to get bad starts
30:58to be honest.
30:58They've always
30:59for years.
31:00They've been one
31:00of the best starters.
31:03It's an opportunity
31:04for sure.
31:04I think they know
31:05what they did wrong
31:06last weekend in Melbourne
31:07and they'll probably
31:08be fine tomorrow
31:09but you never know.
31:10It's a good opportunity.
31:11It's the easiest place
31:12to ever take
31:13because off the line
31:13so we'll see
31:14what we can do.
31:15Thank you.
31:15Thank you.
31:17Oscar,
31:18P5 at the end
31:19of that one.
31:20How do you sum it up
31:21on your side?
31:21How was that final run
31:22the car feeling?
31:24It was reasonable.
31:26I think the step
31:27and grip
31:28from the medium
31:28to the soft
31:29was pretty big
31:31but yeah,
31:33obviously the gap
31:33to Mercedes
31:34is pretty impressive
31:35so some things
31:37for us to try
31:37and work on
31:38but I think the car
31:39felt pretty good.
31:40It was a pretty
31:41decent lap
31:41so yeah,
31:43I don't think
31:44there was too much left.
31:45Have you got any more
31:46answers about that gap
31:47and looking ahead
31:48to the rest
31:48of the weekend
31:49of course
31:49the sprint format
31:50you can change things
31:51after the sprint race?
31:54No,
31:55I think sector one
31:56we seemed good
31:57obviously
31:58but yeah,
31:59six tenths
31:59in the last sector
32:00is impressive
32:01so we'll go
32:03and have a look
32:03at where we're
32:04losing the time.
32:05Thank you.
32:06Thanks.
32:07Andrea,
32:07only a few days
32:08since Melbourne
32:09but very different
32:09conditions
32:10not least
32:10the temperature.
32:12Your third
32:12and fifth
32:12on the grid
32:13for the sprint race
32:14does that constitute
32:14progress?
32:16In a way
32:17I think so
32:19it was
32:21I think
32:22there's some
32:23indications
32:23of improvements
32:24especially
32:25I would say
32:26in the way
32:26we understand
32:27how to use
32:28the power unit
32:29there was
32:30less variability
32:31in the first
32:32practice session
32:34more clarity
32:35as to how
32:36we were using
32:37it during qualifying
32:37and this
32:38was realized
32:39in some better
32:40lap times
32:40which allow us
32:41to qualify
32:42behind Mercedes
32:43that at the moment
32:44are out of reach
32:45but it's good
32:46to see
32:46that McLaren
32:47can fight
32:48for the runner
32:49up position
32:50together with Ferrari
32:52a good start
32:53position
32:53with Oscar
32:54and Lando
32:54they both
32:55drove very well
32:55and it's
32:57a good situation
32:58for the sprint
33:00tomorrow.
33:00It's hard to know
33:01sometimes
33:01when people
33:02are on laps
33:03and when they're not
33:03especially
33:04when they're
33:04on the medium
33:05tyre
33:05in either
33:05SQ1
33:06or SQ2
33:07the stewards
33:08are having a look
33:08at whether
33:08Kimi impeded
33:10Lando
33:10was Lando
33:11definitely
33:12on a proper
33:13push lap
33:14there
33:14or
33:14is he trying
33:15to get an advantage
33:16well in reality
33:18it wasn't clear
33:18whether you would
33:19do the warm-up lap
33:20or the push lap
33:22so like
33:23you know
33:24in the end
33:25because of the way
33:26he was using
33:27the energy
33:27I think that was
33:28not going to be
33:28a fast lap
33:29but the stewards
33:31will take a look
33:31with
33:32yeah
33:32okay
33:33we'll see
33:33what happens
33:34tomorrow
33:34thank you
33:34very much
33:38Toto
33:38bang on cue
33:39bang on cue
33:41just as we were
33:41coming out
33:41from hearing
33:42from Andrea
33:43I just want to
33:44get a quick view
33:45on the difference
33:46between your two
33:46drivers
33:47on the first
33:48laps
33:48seven one
33:49thousandths
33:50between
33:50Kimi
33:51and George
33:52Russell
33:52and then George
33:53in the final
33:54set to four
33:54tenths
33:55I'd love to see
33:56the overlay
33:56of the traces
33:57on the state
33:58of charge
33:58what was it
33:59down to
33:59from where
34:00you were sitting
34:01I think it's
34:02also how
34:03you know
34:04how you
34:05drive the lap
34:06you know
34:06we sometimes
34:07analyse everything
34:08to the last
34:09millisecond
34:10where was it
34:10deployed
34:11where was it
34:11harvested
34:12but it's
34:13humans
34:13in that car
34:14and once
34:15the one does
34:16a better job
34:17and then the other
34:17one
34:18and they're both
34:19clearly performing
34:20very well
34:20I'm very happy
34:21with the car
34:21Kimi it looks
34:22like he finds
34:23the lap time
34:24but not always
34:25in the right
34:25sequence
34:26or putting the
34:26lap together
34:27how is it
34:27when you're
34:28watching it
34:28and also
34:29looking at the
34:29data
34:30how much
34:30potential
34:30do you see
34:31there with
34:31Kimi
34:31yeah it's
34:32interesting
34:33with these
34:33new regulations
34:33you see
34:34starting a lap
34:35in his
34:35two tenths
34:36down or two
34:37tenths up
34:37and you're
34:38thinking this
34:39is going
34:39in the right
34:39direction
34:40but obviously
34:40then the
34:41deployment
34:41is a little
34:42bit different
34:42and it's
34:43their driving
34:43you know
34:43it's the
34:44right feet
34:44that manages
34:45all of that
34:47most of it
34:47and therefore
34:48it's down
34:49to the smallest
34:50detail
34:50you know
34:51you're carrying
34:51a lot of
34:52speed on an
34:52exit and you
34:53might lack
34:53energy in the
34:54next one
34:55now you can
34:56like that
34:56or not
34:56but this is
34:57what makes
34:57the differences
34:58but like I
34:58said to Simon
34:59it's drivers
35:00it's humans
35:01it's not only
35:01the machine
35:02that dictates
35:03your performance
35:03but how you
35:04dresh the pedals
35:07yeah you know
35:07everybody was
35:08saying during
35:09all last season
35:10okay new
35:10new era again
35:11so obviously
35:12Mercedes will be
35:12fast like what
35:13happened when
35:14the hybrid came
35:14in and now
35:15you feel at
35:15home because
35:16you're ahead
35:17but you did
35:18say last year
35:18we focus on
35:19next year
35:19we don't spend
35:20time or energy
35:21or money on
35:21this year
35:21we spend it
35:22on developing
35:22the car
35:23last year
35:23and obviously
35:24the car
35:24is also
35:25amazing
35:25it's not only
35:26the engine
35:26so is that
35:27to step back
35:28you took last year
35:29yeah obviously
35:30you need to
35:30you know we've
35:31seen in the past
35:31teams that have
35:32said that we
35:33concentrate everything
35:33into the next year
35:34and then it failed
35:35I remember you know
35:36the BMW days
35:37where they you know
35:38could have competed
35:39for a championship
35:39and then came
35:40around with a
35:41double diffuser
35:42the following year
35:42and they left
35:45so I think we put
35:46a lot of effort
35:47into the into
35:48the 26 car
35:48maybe a bit earlier
35:49than some of the
35:50others
35:51but I'm really happy
35:52the integration
35:52power unit
35:53and chassis works
35:55well you can see
35:56also Ferrari
35:56which is an integrated
35:58structure
35:58and Audi
36:00also as a works team
36:02that has certain
36:02advantages
36:03because you learn
36:04early
36:04but then what I'm
36:05really pleased of
36:06is how the car drives
36:08I mean you see
36:08the onboards
36:09the cars on the rails
36:10and most of the
36:11lap time gain
36:11that we have
36:12is in the corners
36:12but that's also the case
36:14when you see the two
36:14drivers
36:15your two drivers
36:15George seems to be
36:16much more in control
36:18of his cars
36:18it's as it was
36:19second skin
36:20so was he more
36:21involved in how the car
36:23was developed this year
36:23was it more designed
36:24for all the input
36:25he was giving
36:27no you know
36:27you guys drivers
36:29always tend to
36:30overestimate how much
36:31input the driver has
36:32in development
36:32in the car
36:33and we leave you that
36:33you know
36:34you can think that
36:36but the drivers
36:38are clearly involved
36:39in the simulations
36:40and they say
36:41we think this is good
36:42and this is bad
36:43but obviously
36:43the engineering team
36:44is going to try
36:45to land it
36:46in the best possible spot
36:47and especially
36:47when a car is
36:48completely new
36:49so yeah
36:52just a final one
36:53with regards to
36:54Formula 1 is always
36:55a puzzle
36:55for those that are
36:56trying to catch up
36:57the quickest car
36:58but as you said
36:58here you've got
36:59three other teams
37:00that are customers
37:00of yours
37:01and they've got
37:02some very clever
37:03engineers
37:03and we've seen it
37:04from McLaren
37:05in the past
37:05if you're putting
37:06a lag time
37:07on these things
37:09how quick
37:10do you feel
37:10that they can get
37:11to the answers
37:11that your engineers
37:13have found
37:13from being able
37:14to integrate
37:15those systems
37:15very early
37:17yeah look
37:18everybody has
37:18a different concept
37:19also and you
37:20with the McLaren
37:21without going
37:21into the detail
37:22they have taken
37:22some decisions
37:23that are very
37:23different to ours
37:24when it comes
37:25for example
37:25to gear ratios
37:26or so
37:26that could have
37:27been good
37:27or could have
37:28been bad
37:28but it's a new
37:30brand new car
37:31it is the works
37:32teams which
37:32have a
37:34you know
37:34the nose ahead
37:36but it's just
37:37a matter of time
37:38because you see
37:39what the others
37:39are doing
37:40you have the
37:41exact same
37:42hardware
37:43you have the
37:43exact same
37:44software
37:45but in that
37:45case how do
37:46you simulate
37:46it based
37:47and I have no
37:47doubt McLaren
37:49is just a
37:50formidable structure
37:51that it's not
37:52long that they're
37:53going to be part
37:54of the fight
37:54in the front
37:55well done Toto
37:55well done again
37:56another one
37:57two
37:57quick word
37:58if we could
37:58though
37:59on McLaren
37:59on the customer
38:00team
38:00as you were
38:01saying
38:01they were way
38:02off in Melbourne
38:04it's about
38:05small incremental
38:06gains
38:07week in
38:08week out
38:08isn't it
38:09it's about
38:09going and crunching
38:10the numbers
38:11and doing
38:11everything that
38:12they need to do
38:13to get back to
38:14to Toto
38:15and Mercedes level
38:16I agree
38:16and I think
38:17what Toto is
38:17saying is
38:18right
38:18you know
38:19you come out
38:19the blocks
38:20they're going
38:20to have an
38:20advantage
38:21Mercedes
38:21they're the
38:21work team
38:22they're going
38:22to know
38:23exactly what
38:24that engine
38:24is
38:24putting that
38:25chassis
38:25to do
38:25and everything
38:26is
38:26you know
38:27designed for
38:27that
38:27but
38:28it's a long
38:28season
38:29and
38:29it's also
38:30a long
38:30sort of
38:30yeah
38:31next few years
38:32of these
38:32regulations
38:33and no doubt
38:33they'll get
38:34on top of it
38:34they're very
38:35very smart
38:35engineers
38:35and in that
38:36team
38:37especially
38:37at Williams
38:37as well
38:38who we were
38:39expecting
38:39to be
38:40stronger
38:40are out
38:41both in
38:41an SQ1
38:42so there's
38:43a lot of
38:43teams
38:44with that
38:44engine
38:44in the
38:44back
38:44of the
38:44car
38:45that
38:45definitely
38:46need
38:46to find
38:46a way
38:47to optimize
38:47it
38:47a lot
38:48more
38:48but you
38:48did
38:49say
38:49something
38:49interesting
38:50that never
38:50crossed
38:50my mind
38:51is
38:51gear
38:52ratios
38:53if you
38:54look at
38:54the past
38:54regulations
38:55it was
38:55numb
38:56it didn't
38:56matter
38:56which gears
38:56you were
38:57running
38:57but now
38:58with the
38:59harvesting
39:00it seems
39:00to have
39:01a big
39:01effect
39:01and like
39:02you said
39:02they have
39:02a very
39:03different
39:03approach
39:03on which
39:04gear
39:04ratios
39:04to you
39:04so
39:05maybe
39:05that's
39:05something
39:05they're stuck
39:06with
39:06for the
39:06whole
39:06season
39:07if that's
39:07one
39:07of the
39:07issues
39:08okay
39:08we're
39:09going to
39:09take a
39:09short
39:09break
39:09when we
39:10come back
39:10we'll react
39:11on
39:11Ferrari's
39:12day

39:13and a

39:23who
39:24will
39:24start
39:24from

39:25Norris
39:26more
39:26reaction
39:26to
39:27sprint
39:27qualifying
39:27as you
39:27can
39:28see

39:28next
39:37welcome
39:38back
39:38the

39:43let's

39:44from
39:44them
39:44and
39:44their
39:44boss
39:46Charles
39:47that
39:47sounded
39:47like
39:47a bit
39:48of
39:48a
39:48tricky
39:48when
39:48we

40:08try
40:08to
40:08understand
40:09what
40:09has

40:22yeah
40:23there's
40:24I
40:24mean
40:25it
40:25doesn't

40:26change
40:26the
40:26picture
40:26from
40:27where
40:27we
40:27are
40:27I
40:28think
40:28in
40:28the
40:28race
40:28we
40:28should
40:29be
40:30relatively
40:31stronger
40:31than
40:32where
40:32we
40:32were

40:34however
40:36Mercedes
40:36seems
40:36to be
40:37still
40:37a step
40:37ahead
40:38in
40:38qualifying
40:39for
40:39some
40:39reason
40:40the

41:29it was

41:30we
41:31were
41:31conscious
41:32of
41:33last
41:34year
41:34that
41:34we
41:35thought
41:36that

41:44and
41:45step

41:46we've
41:46got
41:46to
41:46push
41:46to
41:47be
41:47able
41:47to
41:47close
41:47that
41:47gap
41:47I
41:48think
41:48car
41:48wise
41:49feels
41:49great
41:50and
41:50I
41:50think
41:50we
41:50can
41:50compete
41:51with
41:51them
41:51through
41:51corners
41:52but
41:53when
41:53you're
41:53down
41:53on
41:53power
41:54it's
41:54the

42:04I
42:04don't
42:04really

42:04why
42:05we
42:05went
42:05back
42:05on
42:06it
42:06I
42:06think
42:06it's
42:06we

42:07it
42:08to

43:02I mean
43:03we're
43:03going to
43:03see a lot
43:03of that
43:04this
43:04year
43:04if
43:05one
43:06car
43:06is
43:06deploying
43:06better
43:06than
43:07the
43:07other
43:07obviously
43:07it's a
43:07massive
43:08difference
43:08yeah
43:09I think
43:09so
43:10and I
43:10think
43:10you know
43:11Charles
43:12Leclerc
43:12complained
43:12explicitly
43:13on the
43:13radio
43:13saying
43:14that he
43:14lost
43:15in the
43:15deployment
43:15in that
43:16flying
43:16lap
43:17in the
43:17end
43:17of that
43:17session
43:18and
43:18although
43:19Lewis
43:20says
43:20that
43:21the
43:21car
43:22felt
43:22mega
43:22the
43:23wing
43:23didn't
43:23make
43:23any
43:23difference
43:24how
43:25detrimental
43:25is it
43:26to
43:26we've only
43:27got one
43:27practice
43:27session
43:28here
43:28and to
43:29run a
43:29wing
43:29that then
43:30you're not
43:30prepared to
43:31take into
43:31the rest
43:32of the
43:32weekend
43:33doesn't seem
43:33like the
43:34optimum
43:34way to
43:35start your
43:36qualifying
43:36preparation
43:37so do you
43:37think they
43:38should have
43:38done perhaps
43:39what they
43:39should have
43:40done on
43:40strategy
43:40last year
43:41by splitting
43:42it across
43:42the garage
43:42I mean
43:43last weekend
43:43yeah
43:44or Ted said
43:44you know
43:45you could have
43:45started with
43:45one wing
43:46then changed
43:46to another
43:47halfway through
43:47a session
43:47at least
43:48you've got
43:48some running
43:49on the
43:49other wing
43:49to get the
43:53because as
43:54you change
43:55downforce
43:55and drag
43:56and all of
43:56these things
43:57you're changing
43:58the deployment
43:58out of every
43:59strip
44:00true
44:01but there's
44:02no testing
44:02so they do
44:03need to put
44:03it on the
44:04car at some
44:04point
44:05to get the
44:06mileage on
44:06it
44:06because they
44:07will want
44:07to race
44:08it
44:09and
44:09one hour
44:10practice
44:11session
44:11it's not
44:12a lot
44:12of time
44:13to change
44:13the rear
44:13wings
44:14mostly
44:14they seem
44:15to be
44:15very complex
44:16pieces
44:17now
44:17but down
44:18on power
44:18that's
44:18what you said
44:19there's only
44:19so much
44:19you can do
44:20if you're
44:20down on power
44:20that was a
44:21telling
44:21thing from
44:21Lewis
44:22and I
44:23the thing
44:24is we go
44:24to different
44:25tracks
44:25we're talking
44:26about
44:26the difference
44:27in energy
44:28management
44:28across the
44:29different circuits
44:30the more
44:31of a sample
44:32set we get
44:32where it's
44:33a one-two
44:34for Mercedes
44:34the more
44:35the deflation
44:36we're going
44:36to see
44:37from other
44:37teams
44:38that's that
44:40the dawning
44:40of realisation
44:41we're out
44:41quicker than
44:42others
44:42yeah but I
44:43think if we
44:43look at the
44:43positives
44:44that come
44:44out of it
44:44he said
44:45that they
44:45are deploying
44:46better in
44:46the race
44:47than they
44:47are qualifying
44:48so we've
44:49still got a
44:49race in our
44:50hands
44:50for the
44:50strength
44:50tomorrow
44:51and the
44:51race
44:51if they
44:52can work
44:53it must be
44:54possible
44:54because Mercedes
44:55are doing it
44:55better deployment
44:57and qualifying
44:57then that
44:59could be
44:59you know
45:00that could be
45:00an electronic
45:00quite quick
45:01fix potentially
45:02for Ferrari
45:03and they
45:04do seem
45:05confident
45:06in their
45:06race pace
45:07and the race
45:08is where
45:08the points
45:08are at
45:09exactly
45:09exactly
45:10thanks for
45:11the positives
45:11let's go
45:12for further
45:13positives
45:14to the
45:14Skypad
45:15Anthony
45:15is there
45:16just 7 tenths
45:17actually
45:17when you're
45:17talking about
45:18the difference
45:19between a car
45:19at the end
45:20of a set
45:21of regulations
45:21four years
45:22in and this
45:23one
45:23and it's
45:24just 7 tenths
45:25that
45:25I mean
45:26that just
45:26shows you
45:26these things
45:27are capable
45:28of mega laps
45:30yeah the lap
45:31times are there
45:32obviously
45:32but the way
45:33they achieve it
45:34is very different
45:34just two things
45:35so first of all
45:36be the news
45:37in that
45:37Norris wasn't
45:38in fact
45:39on a push lap
45:40when he came up
45:41to Kimi Antonelli
45:42so Antonelli
45:42should be fine
45:43with that
45:45and I've listened
45:46first hand
45:47to the deployment
45:48of Charles Leclerc
45:49just standing here
45:49on the pad
45:50I can't show that
45:50yet but maybe
45:51I'll send it out
45:52on social media
45:53or something
45:53because I can hear
45:54that the deployment
45:55is not right
45:56he gets too much
45:56deployment into 11
45:57and therefore
45:58not enough
45:58into turn 14
45:59but George Russell
46:01asked
46:01where's the differences
46:03from last year
46:03to this year
46:04and so I've got
46:05Lewis's last year
46:06lap on the right
46:06hand side
46:07and George on the
46:08left as he's
46:08just done
46:09watch this
46:10speed difference
46:11down towards
46:11turn 1
46:12as I play it on
46:14I'll stop it
46:14at the 50 metre
46:15board
46:16at least I'll try to
46:17and roll it
46:19onto there
46:19look at how much
46:21further ahead
46:22the modern day
46:22F1 cars are
46:23at the 50 bore
46:25compared to where
46:25it is for Hamilton
46:26way in the distance
46:27there
46:27so immediately
46:28that's what that
46:29extra 350 kilowatts
46:31of power is giving
46:32you before turn 1
46:33so the modern cars
46:34way ahead
46:36even before you
46:36get to turn 1
46:37George doesn't
46:38quite meet the
46:39apex of 2
46:40but that change
46:42of direction
46:42with these lighter
46:43more agile cars
46:45is a benefit
46:46through that corner
46:47and I stop it here
46:48on the kerb
46:49look at the difference
46:49these new cars
46:51so much faster
46:52in those slow speed
46:53corners
46:54and continues to
46:55gain on Lewis
46:57on the right hand
46:57side
46:58that's obviously
46:58the sprint pole
47:01lap from last year
47:02through turn 6
47:03acceleration on both
47:05cars looks pretty
47:05good
47:05but again that
47:06relentless acceleration
47:07kicking around about
47:08now on the modern
47:10cars
47:10but this part here
47:11is a 0 kilowatt
47:13zone
47:13so no battery
47:14deployment around
47:15this corner turn 7
47:16and you can hear
47:17the revs die away
47:18here
47:20for Russell
47:21and by the time
47:22they get to turn 8
47:23just got a reference
47:24to the right hand
47:25side here now
47:25of that bit of
47:26tarmac
47:27Lewis is clawing
47:29back because of
47:30that lack of
47:31battery power
47:32through turn 8
47:33then 9 and 10
47:34once again
47:35slow speed corners
47:36that's going to
47:38obviously benefit
47:39the modern car
47:40and then again
47:41a nice kick
47:42of deployment
47:42before this
47:43100 meter board
47:44so he hangs on
47:45to that advantage
47:46I'll stop it
47:47on the 100 board
47:48there
47:48but it's close
47:49between the two
47:50of them now
47:50and you can hear
47:52just again
47:52that super clip
47:53kicking in
47:54for Russell
47:54before turn 11
47:55now
47:56through the exit
47:57of 12
47:58the car on the
47:59right hand side
48:00last year
48:00much more downforce
48:02so despite the fact
48:03that you've got
48:04this deployment there
48:05the extra downforce
48:07of last year's car
48:08is paying dividends
48:09and sends him down
48:10this straight
48:11and the super clip
48:13again not helping
48:14the modern car
48:15and by the time
48:15you get to the 50
48:16board here
48:17the Ferrari is ahead
48:19but it's still
48:19quite close
48:21braking into turn 14
48:24both drivers
48:25taking it really well
48:26but there's no more
48:28that Russell has
48:29literally no more
48:30left in the tank
48:31the battery tank
48:32as they come around
48:33that final corner
48:34and that was
48:35the advantage
48:36to last year's cars
48:37over this year
48:38even in half a year's
48:40time of development
48:41if you came back
48:42to this circuit
48:43I'm convinced
48:44that these cars
48:45would be faster
48:45than that of
48:46last year's cars
48:48around this track
48:48so impressive stuff
48:49already
48:49I never thought
48:50we'd be talking
48:51only a few tenths
48:52between them
48:52so fascinating stuff
48:53I hope you enjoyed
48:55it as much as I did
48:57do we did
48:58Max Verstappen
48:59will start from
49:008th in tomorrow's
49:01sprint
49:01not often you say
49:02he's 1.7 seconds
49:04off the leader
49:06but this was the
49:07apology from
49:08Laurent McKees
49:09afterwards
49:13sorry Max
49:14third one
49:14a lot to learn
49:16the weekend is still
49:17long
49:17we need to learn
49:19from
49:19what happens
49:20today
49:21so
49:22let's try again
49:30Max on the radio
49:30that sounded
49:31like a tough session
49:31can you tell us
49:32what you were
49:32dealing with in the car
49:33we heard about
49:34downshifts
49:34and the gears
49:35but what else
49:36were you dealing with
49:37no I mean
49:38the whole day
49:38it's been a disaster
49:39pace wise
49:40so yeah
49:40no grip
49:42honestly I think
49:42that's the biggest
49:43problem
49:43no grip
49:44no balance
49:45just losing
49:46massive amounts
49:47of time
49:47in the corners
49:48to be honest
49:50and then of course
49:51because of that
49:52you start
49:53triggering other
49:53little problems
49:55but the big problem
49:57for us
49:57is just
49:57the cornering
49:58is completely
49:59completely out
50:01you've got this car
50:02for the sprint race
50:02but can you make
50:03some big changes
50:05for qualifying
50:05in the main
50:06Grand Prix
50:06in that case
50:07can you try
50:07something different
50:08or aggressive
50:09with the setup
50:09or is that not
50:10possible
50:10we'll have a look
50:11I don't know
50:13at the moment
50:14what we
50:15can do
50:17but yeah
50:18we'll see
50:18alright
50:19thanks Max
50:19thank you
50:21honest as ever
50:22he can understand
50:23his frustrations
50:25yes because
50:25last year
50:26he knew he had a car
50:27that he could maybe
50:28bring the battle
50:29during the season
50:30and now it looks like
50:31the gap is way too big
50:33and also he said
50:34he's got lack of grip
50:35and it triggers
50:36other issues
50:38you know
50:39when you're harvesting
50:40energy
50:40you need a car
50:41that is very stable
50:41if you have
50:42to
50:44if you get a little bit
50:45sideways
50:45you get off the gas
50:46you get back on the gas
50:47it's really not good
50:48for the energy
50:48and that's maybe
50:49what he's alluding to
50:50yeah he was really
50:51unhappy through that
50:52whole session
50:52you know
50:53complaining of the
50:54down just
50:54which we've heard a lot
50:55from Max in the past
50:56but there seemed to be
50:57fundamentally a lot more
50:59issues going on
51:00in that car
51:00at one point he just said
51:01just look at everything
51:03and then when he came out
51:05on his out lap
51:05actually in Sprint Qualy 3
51:07he said
51:07is there anything
51:08anything I can do
51:09differently to try
51:10and improve this
51:11and he was basically told
51:12no this is fundamental
51:14in the car
51:14so very disappointing
51:16session for him
51:17and like Rachel said
51:18there in the question
51:19has to carry that
51:20into the Sprint
51:21and doesn't sound
51:21like any quick fixes
51:22to be honest
51:23absolutely
51:23okay
51:24Oli Behrman
51:25once again
51:26impressing inside
51:27the top 10
51:28we'll start from 9th
51:29tomorrow
51:31great job today
51:32Oli
51:33that looked like
51:33a good session for you
51:34yeah
51:35yeah it was good
51:35it was good
51:37you know
51:37Spring Qualy 3
51:38we showed really good pace
51:39already from
51:40pretty much
51:41Lab 1 of FP1
51:42and we were able
51:43to build on that
51:44and go forward
51:46it was a tough session
51:47you know
51:47the balance was a bit
51:48on edge
51:49and difficult to put
51:50all up together
51:51but you know
51:51we got there in the end
51:52and happy with P9 today
51:54we saw you really pushing it
51:55out there on track as well
51:56so what about this Sprint
51:58tomorrow
51:58can you bring home
51:59can you get into that
52:00top 8
52:00and bring home a point
52:01or two for the team
52:02do you feel
52:02yeah that's the plan
52:03you know
52:03on the face of it
52:05I'm quite impressed
52:06and surprised
52:07about the gap
52:07to the leaders
52:08you know
52:08we seem to have
52:08closed it a little bit
52:09compared to last week
52:10and honestly
52:11prior to the weekend
52:11I was not expecting
52:12to be in the fight
52:13for the top 8
52:14because we expected
52:15the four teams
52:15to be so far ahead
52:16at the end
52:17that was not really
52:18the case
52:18and you know
52:19Red Bulls don't seem
52:20to have incredible pace
52:22and it looks like
52:23if we get everything
52:23right tomorrow
52:24we can actually
52:24score some points
52:25and then obviously
52:26in the race tomorrow
52:27sorry on Sunday
52:28that's where I get serious
52:31yeah his stock
52:32continues to rise
52:33okay right
52:34let's build it up
52:35yeah okay
52:36this has been
52:36another day
52:37for Mercedes
52:38but we know
52:39those Ferraris
52:40are fast starters
52:41and when it's
52:42a shortened race
52:43like this
52:43in a sprint
52:44it's about staying ahead
52:45getting ahead
52:46and staying ahead
52:47can they do that
52:48hold on
52:48and no strategies
52:50no pit stops
52:51and that should help
52:52but we've said
52:53high degradation
52:54absolutely choose the tyres
52:56I just wonder
52:57if tomorrow
