00:03I don't really remember the moment of deciding that I should do this project
00:07but somewhere, wherever it was that I decided that it would be nice to adapt Fantastic Mr. Fox
00:13that was just naturally to me the way we ought to do it
00:16just because I've always loved stop motion
00:22He's a wonderful writer
00:24and his personality comes through in the writing so forcefully
00:29and I guess that's what you respond to
00:34I started working with Noah Baumbach on the script
00:38and I had an idea of where it could start
00:42that's before what we experienced in the book
00:45and then we wrote that
00:49and then we wrote that
00:52and then at a certain point we said now we're arriving at the book
00:56and then we followed the book
00:57and then at the end of that we had an idea immediately
01:02okay, something else happens right now
01:04right at the scene that we end the book on
01:06and we know what happens next and we just followed it through
01:12Dahl probably wrote Mr. Fox to be an animal version of himself
01:20and so I think when we were writing it
01:24we sort of, without ever putting it into words
01:27that was sort of intuitively what we were doing
01:30we assumed that
01:32so, but as a result of that Dahl is a very interesting man
01:35and many colors, you know
01:38and so that went into the character
01:42and we spent time at his house
01:44where we were writing
01:45and a lot of the details of his life
01:48sort of found their way into our story
01:50and into his character
01:54George Clooney seemed like a natural choice
02:00because we needed somebody who was going to be a hero
02:05and I think he has that sort of just automatically
02:12we're lucky enough to get Meryl Streep
02:15who's, you know, there's no better actress
02:20and I think, you know, she completely brought it to life
02:25and, you know, gave us a character that to me
02:31was maybe not particularly memorable
02:33the way we had written her
02:38the thing with Meryl Streep is
02:40she's the kind of actress
02:42or she's the kind of person where
02:44she's obviously sort of the most highly thought of
02:49actress on the planet
02:51but when we're there to do the scene together
02:54she's perfectly happy to start, you know, acting crazy
02:58to see if this helps to bring it to life
03:01and, you know, making sounds
03:04and just pretending
03:05using her imagination in some recording studio
03:09we recorded some of her performance in France
03:12and, you know, she's in a recording studio in Paris
03:16they were looking at this thing on the page
03:17and saying, let's try it again
03:18and now she's kind of yelling and acting like an animal
03:22and the result is you get something very alive
03:25and also she has a beautiful voice
03:27and she really knows how to use it
03:32doing this sort of movie
03:34it's a long, long process
03:36and it's very sort of detail-oriented
03:40there's a million decisions
03:42more than a normal movie
03:43many more than a normal, than a live-action movie
03:47because everything has to be made
03:49it has to be manufactured to be in there
03:51it's miniature
03:52and people are making decisions
03:54not in a moment-to-moment basis in the story
03:58but in a frame-to-frame basis
04:00and everything is just more intricate
04:07we have such a great group of people
04:11some of the best people doing animation in the world
04:14are here with us in London working on the movie
04:16and we sort of just figured out
04:18and, you know, I was new to it
04:20so I had so much to learn
04:23from all of these different people
04:25and then our process
04:27is different from what they've done
04:29because of just the way that
04:31just working with me
04:32so we really had a lot to figure out
04:34and I feel like we did
04:38our idea of the movie was that
04:40it was going to take place
04:43in a landscape that was like Gypsy House
04:47which is Doll's house
04:49that part of England
04:50and in fact we sort of recreated Gypsy House
04:53in a lot of ways in the story
04:54and then also we wanted it to be autumn
04:58and for there to be mud
05:00and in fact
05:02the whole movie takes place in the mud
05:06this didn't really happen
05:09mud is not easy
05:10in stop motion
05:14but the look of it
05:15sort of came from Gypsy House
05:16and just from the sort of time of year
05:18we wanted the movie to take place
05:20and when would be iTunes
05:20and ig sleeps and so what you do
05:20is that people should have
05:20and then you know
05:22and you know
05:22it is a very interesting
05:22or anything
05:23but why is that
05:23we do
05:24in the snow
