00:15I was never intended to be a comedic actor at all.
00:19I took myself very, very seriously when I was 17, in fact.
00:26And then it happened completely accidentally.
00:30That I ended up, in the comedy world, I ended up in a sketch group at NYU, which was where
00:35I went to college, that ended up becoming The State, which was a sort of very influential
00:40comedy group that was on in the 90s, and that became Viva Variety, which then became Reno
00:44911.
00:45So, I've been basically creating and doing comedy with a couple of my best friends since
00:511988, which is, I believe, right around when Zac Efron was born.
00:55That's not depressing, at all.
01:00Is there soup for lunch, Mother?
01:10The age 17?
01:11I had a patented look that I had created.
01:18I don't know if I had to patent it, because I've never seen anyone steal it.
01:21But what it was was cowboy boots, acid-wash jeans, blazer, bow tie, real bow tie, not a clip-on.
01:32This was my patented look.

01:42It was a dreadful, dreadful look, and the only thing that made it at least sort of okay is
01:47I didn't tuck the jeans into the cowboy boots, you know, like I didn't do the slouchy boot
01:53look.
01:54But that was really the only saving grace about it.
01:56It was a horrible, horrible look.
02:05Bow tie with cowboy boots.
02:07Yeah.
02:07Yeah, because it says, hey, I'm a right-wing fruitcake.
02:13What's the weirdest?
02:14It's like eight messages you're sending with that.
02:16And then the acid-wash was just nuts.
02:18I looked like, you know what I kind of looked like a little bit?
02:20Like a weird friend of the guys in Dexie's Midnight Runners.
02:24You know the people with the crazy overalls and hats?
02:27Who were jumping around doing the Come on Eileen song?
02:29I looked like someone who might be one of their friends.
02:31Like the manager.
02:33Somebody who wasn't quite cool enough to be in Dexie's Midnight Runners.
02:35But we'll let him hang out.
02:36Because, you know, he's good at reserving the hotel rooms and stuff.
02:48Let's say this.
02:48Okay, the bow ties, the acid-wash, the cowboy boots.
02:50I wasn't unpopular with the ladies.
02:55I'm not saying they were nines and tens.
02:56I'm not saying they were nines and tens.
02:58I'm not saying they were eights or maybe even sevens or sixes.
03:05But I was very popular with a certain, you know, kind of lady.
03:21Yeah, I didn't know that much about Zephron other than, oh, he's so dreamy.
03:30He's a dreamboat.
03:32Oh, my goodness, he's lovely.
03:34And then I saw the High School Musical movies, ready to make fun of them.
03:38You know how you kind of watch something with your buddies.
03:40You're like, okay, this is going to be.
03:41And then I got immediately kind of sucked into the High School Musical movies.
03:44Now I've seen them all.
03:47And he's a surprisingly funny kid.
03:50The big surprise, I think, in Seventeen Again is Zack in a non-singing, dancing role
03:55and seeing how naturally gifted he is at comedy, which is, it's a little, it makes me a little nervous,
04:03actually.
04:04Look, on behalf of the comedy world, we don't need guys who look like that being great at comedy.
04:11I don't need that.
04:13You can do modeling.
04:15You can have a fragrance called Zephron.
04:17There's a lot of other stuff available to you.
04:21Comedy is for guys like me.
04:25We have this.
04:26Leave it for us.
04:29Just leave it.
04:38We actually did, it seems so stupid, but we rehearsed that, the lightsaber battle, for almost a month.
04:46Like, every day.
04:47It was so weird.
04:48We had a very, the stunt coordinator was very gung-ho about it.
04:51Then, on set, we forgot most of it.
04:55So a lot of it had to be sort of improvised.
04:57And luckily, nobody got hurt.
04:58Oh, no, that's not true.
04:59I got hurt.
05:00Zach hit me really, really, really hard in the head with a lightsaber, and I think it's on film somewhere.
05:05Maybe we can cut to it now.
05:10Maybe we don't have that clip.
05:12If we did, boy, I hope we cut to it right now.
05:16Man, he nailed me so good.
05:18Felt it for a couple days, too.
05:28Here's what, my biggest surprise about the movie is, I've seen it a couple times now.
05:32Obviously, there's, the Zach fans are going to like the movie because of Zach's in it.
05:35But also, just comedy fans because Leslie Mann, Melora Hardin, me, Matthew Perry, me, Leslie, Melora, this guy.
05:51It's a very funny movie, even if you're not a high school musical fan.
