00:05And the reason we're going to Rio was that we wanted an exotic location that had a big specific cultural
00:14place, but was very very different to the western world.
00:18It also needed to be somewhere where you believed that there were trash dumps, there were kids living in the
00:23streets, there was corruption, and, you know, it led us there.
00:30Plus, it's very exotic, it's visually exotic, it's exciting, it's dynamic, it's where the Olympics will be, it's a great
00:38city to operate in.
00:45We believe that you should always try and make films as culturally specific as possible, and we knew we'd never
00:51be able to find kids who were authentic and could speak fluent English.
00:56And as such, the conversation never even began about making it in English. It was always a, let's make this
01:02true to the location and make it in Portuguese.
01:13We didn't greenlight the film until we had the kids, because without them, it's nothing.
01:20Their authenticity, their bravery, their humour, their soul, you know, it emanates through every frame in the picture.
01:30And Stephen is a, you know, he's an actor's director, and without the right actors, he'll never make a movie.
01:37So the casting was absolutely critical. It wasn't a case of, great, let's start in September, now let's go and
01:41find the kids.
01:42It was, it was the other way around. Let's go and find the kids, and then let's see if we
01:46can make this film.
01:52Stephen is an actor's director, a drama director, second to none.
01:59It's incredible watching him work, especially with non-professional actors.
02:05The way in which he manages to extract a performance in a situation where, especially with kids,
02:14they may not even fully understand what the scene is about or how it fits into the story is, you
02:21know, it's incredible.
02:22So that's what he brings. He brings real truth, real honesty, real emotion to every single frame that he shoots.
02:31He brings real truth, real emotion to every single frame that he shoots.
02:39He brings real truth, real emotion to every single frame that he shoots.
02:39He brings real truth, real emotion to every single frame that he shoots.
02:39He brings real truth, real emotion to every single frame that he shoots.
02:39And he brings real truth to each other.
