00:07To Dr. Stephen Hawking
00:11Thank you, Jim
00:13Well, I got a script, as you often do, just out of the blue
00:16It was about Stephen Hawking
00:18That was what drew me to the film
00:19I have a disease
00:22I have two years to live
00:23I wanted the film to have a perspective of the person who's falling in love with Stephen
00:28I want us to be together for as long as we've got
00:30And if that's not very long, well then that's just how it is
00:33You don't know what's coming
00:34It becomes a story of what it's like to live with someone
00:36Who has that disability and that genius at the same time
00:39That perspective is how the film could be different from a conventional biopic
00:47This is temporary
00:49James is sort of a unique choice in that
00:53He's mainly known for his documentaries like Man on Wire
00:56What excited me knowing that James was doing it was knowing that it wasn't just a biopic
01:00It was going to be something much further and beyond that
01:03He knows how to interrogate material and really find the truth
01:08He knows how to tell a story like this
01:10The weight of science is against you
01:13I love him and he loves me
01:16We're going to fight this illness together, all of us
01:20I wanted to be prompted by the optimism of the characters
01:24He was the perfect person for this film because he can show nuance in character like nobody else
01:31It would be wrong to make the film in a very miserable, dreary, dismal way
01:36That it should be full of light and colour
01:38Notwithstanding Stephen's illness and maybe because of it
01:42Thank you
01:43Sorry, did you say something?
01:45I said thank you
01:47James is the greatest, most collaborative director
01:50He really does allow other people's voices
01:54And that's because James is a really skilful filmmaker
01:59He will never speak again
02:01Yes he will
02:03My name is Stephen Hawking
02:06What James does is he brings out the best in every department
02:09And he does this rare thing of emboldening you
02:12And making you feel like you really can take risks
02:15If you don't get up and play a game with me
02:18I won't come back here again
02:24I think the film will have a big emotional impact
02:28I have loved you
02:31Look what we made
02:35James is someone when he finds images of real life
02:39He really mines that for everything it was worth
02:43It was a great privilege for me to work with James
02:45And his film will surprise people
02:48Professor Hawking
02:52Stephen Hawking's survival and the contributions made to science
02:55Is an extraordinarily optimistic theme
02:58And the great aspect of the true stories is that they're true
03:02And they have surprising things you could not make up
03:06While there is life, there is hope
