00:14the stakes suddenly get like a level higher

00:19we were shooting the Mayball scene
00:21and this was this huge extravaganza

00:32When Stephen arrives it's amazing
00:34because the icon of the silhouette of Stephen in his wheelchair is so known
00:42We were doing a scene where Eddie and I are just walking and talking
00:45and on one side of me I could see just from my peripheral vision
00:48I could see Stephen and on the other side I could see Jane
00:51and it was the most surreal experience
00:53and just a little bit intimidating
00:56to have two people who you're trying to inhabit in some way watching what you're doing
01:01Ladies and gentlemen, I have your attention for one hour and please
01:05I have the great pleasure and honor to introduce you to Professor Stephen Hawking
01:12He was there for this long night of shooting
01:15and I think that's when he realized what we were doing was of a certain scale
01:19it wasn't a little kitchen sink drama
01:21we were really trying to make this big canvas of his story
01:24and also of course it raises the stakes for Eddie again
01:27because he has to not only perform for us and for the camera but to Stephen
01:31I felt an amazing mixture of great trepidation and wonderful pride that he had come to visit
01:37I was rather surprised that a major film company should want to make a film about me
01:44The Mayball scene was spectacular, especially the fireworks
01:48One of the first items in my memoir is a reminiscence of a Mayball that Stephen and I went to
02:00This is being recreated this evening here in Cambridge
02:04which is an extraordinary thing for me to be witnessing

02:12Stephen has a look in his eye, he pays attention and he concentrates
02:16and you know that he's evaluating everything in a very smart way
02:20It makes you raise your game too, you want to make sure that it feels as it should feel
