ran’s advanced Fattah and Kheibar ballistic missiles are reportedly being used in the latest wave of attacks targeting central Israel, raising fresh questions about the effectiveness of Israel’s air-defense systems. Explosions and interceptions were reported across major Israeli cities as the conflict between Israel and Iran continues to escalate.

Iran’s Kheibar Shekan missile, a solid-fuel medium-range ballistic missile with a range of about 1,450 km, is designed to maneuver in its final phase to evade air defenses. Meanwhile, the Fattah missile has been described as a high-speed or hypersonic weapon intended to challenge advanced interception systems.

Israel relies on a multi-layered air defense network, including Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and the Arrow systems, to intercept incoming threats. Despite these defenses, the scale and speed of ballistic missile barrages can create intense pressure on interception systems.

The latest exchange comes amid a rapidly escalating Israel–Iran war, with missile strikes, drone attacks, and air raids raising fears of a broader regional conflict across the Middle East.

00:18Viral videos circulating the internet claim that Israel's Iron Dome failed to intercept
00:24incoming Iranian missiles, showing explosions and bright flashes across central Israel.
00:31But the reality is more complex. These clips began spreading on March 11,
00:362026, during the latest overnight missile barrage from Iran. Several posts show impacts or explosions
00:44near major Israeli cities such as Tel Aviv, Patak Tikva, and Rishon le Zion, with captions claiming
00:52that Israel's air defenses completely failed. However, many of these videos are unverified and
00:59lack timestamps, locations, or confirmation from independent sources. To understand what's
01:05happening, it's important to know that Israel does not rely on Iron Dome alone. Israel operates
01:12a multi-layered air defense system designed to intercept different types of threats. The Iron
01:18Dome system mainly intercepts short-range rockets, mortars, and drones, typically fired from nearby
01:25areas like Gaza or southern Lebanon. For long-range ballistic missiles like those launched by Iran,
01:32Israel relies primarily on other systems. David's sling handles medium-range threats, while the Arrow 2
01:40and Arrow 3 systems, along with U.S. Patriot and THAD support, are specifically designed to intercept
01:48high-altitude ballistic missiles traveling at extreme speeds. Many viral clips actually show
01:56interceptor launches, or mid-air explosions, which can happen when a missile is destroyed late in its
02:02trajectory. In some cases, falling debris, shrapnel, or bomblets from cluster warheads can still hit the
02:10ground, creating explosions that appear like direct missile strikes. That said, interceptions are not
02:17perfect. During the current escalation, Iran has fired hundreds of missiles and drones, including
02:24advanced weapons such as the Fatah, Imad, and Khabar-shaken ballistic missiles, some reportedly carrying
02:31multiple warheads or cluster payloads. This kind of saturation attack can strain even advanced defense
02:39systems. Reports from Israeli and international media indicate that while most missiles are intercepted,
02:46a small number have penetrated defenses, causing damage in areas like Petak Tikva, Bnei Brak, and Beit Shemesh.
02:55Some incidents have led to injuries and structural damage, and earlier strikes in March even caused fatalities
03:02when shelters were hit. The current conflict is part of the rapidly escalating Iran-Israel war, which
03:09intensified in late 2025 and early 2026 after Israeli and US strikes inside Iran. Since then, Iran has
03:18launched repeated waves of missiles and drones, sometimes nearly daily, targeting Israel as well as US
03:26military positions across the region. At the same time, Israel and the United States have continued
03:33airstrikes on Iranian missile sites, air defenses, and allied forces, including targets linked to Hezbollah
03:40in Lebanon. Despite the intense exchanges, Israel's defense network is still intercepting the majority of
03:48incoming threats, but the sheer volume of attacks, combined with advanced missile technology,
03:54and possible cluster warheads, means that some impacts and debris are inevitable.
