00:22A drone strike has hit the UAE consulate in Erbil, Iraq, triggering fresh debate about
00:28the widening regional conflict. Late on the night of March 9, explosions were reported in Erbil,
00:35the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region. Witnesses say kamikaze-style drones struck near the UAE
00:42consulate general, sparking a fire and damaging parts of the building. Fortunately, no casualties
00:48were reported, but the political impact of the attack could be far bigger than the physical damage.
00:54The UAE government quickly called the strike a terrorist drone attack and demanded an
01:00investigation from both Baghdad and the Kurdistan regional government. However, to understand this
01:06incident, we have to look at the larger regional context. For weeks now, the Middle East has been
01:12experiencing intense escalation following U.S. and Israeli military actions targeting Iran and Iranian
01:18interests. In response, Iran and groups aligned with it have increased pressure across the region.
01:25Erbil itself has become a major strategic hub, hosting U.S. military facilities, foreign diplomatic
01:31missions, and intelligence infrastructure. From Tehran's perspective, these locations are not neutral
01:37spaces. They are viewed as forward bases used by adversaries operating against Iran. And that's why
01:44analysts say places like Erbil have effectively become proxy battlegrounds. There's also another
01:49important development. Just two days before the strike, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced
01:56that Iran was willing to halt attacks on neighboring countries, but only if those countries do not allow
02:01their territory to be used for attacks on Iran. So the key question now is this. If military infrastructure
02:08linked to Iran's rivals continues operating from nearby regions, contentions in the Gulf and Iraq
02:13actually de-escalate. For now, the Erbil drone strike shows one thing clearly. The shadow war shaping the
02:20Middle East is far from over.
