00:00The suspicious death of a 21-year-old man...
00:04Christian!
00:04What is the emergency?
00:06This leads to worrying questions.
00:09How will you have residue on your hands?
00:11Here, here, here, and also here.
00:15He certainly wasn't going to kill himself over a girl.
00:19Can this case be solved, even when the facts don't fit together?
00:24The investigation lasted 45 minutes.
00:28They know exactly what happened.
00:31And then, a 19-year-old girl meets the perfect man.
00:37She was so in love with him that she thought she had found true love.
00:41But when she disappears...
00:43Six days without any sign of their daughter.
00:46A terrible truth emerges.
00:49And I didn't believe it.
00:51You can't kill someone and get away with it.
00:54What actually happened to Christian and Kira?
01:01February 26, 2014.
01:05Meridian, a southern city with 40,000 inhabitants in Mississippi...
01:10...known for its country music roots and historic railroads.
01:15But when a young man dies under strange circumstances, the city is divided.
01:21It didn't make any sense then, and it doesn't make any sense now.
01:26Christian Andréacchio, 21, is outgoing, lively, and full of life.
01:31He was more than just a son, because he got along with everyone.
01:35He was the life of the party wherever he went.
01:39Christian works on a tugboat, which means he can be away from home for weeks at a time.
01:45But it's a solid career.
01:47He had been trying to make connections since he was 17 years old.
01:51And one of Todd's friends got him that job on the tugboat.
01:54He was going to be the youngest captain in that company.
01:59Christian is close to his family and has a wide circle of friends.
02:03He had a lot of fun, worked hard, and was a great person to be around.
02:08He's also a charmer.
02:10He was a womanizer.
02:12He flirted a lot and the girls loved it.
02:15He liked to make women have fun and smile.
02:19After breaking up with his ex-girlfriend, another girl catches Christian's attention.
02:24Whitley Goodman.
02:26Whitley was a substitute.
02:27He entered into that relationship quickly.
02:30He met her just a few weeks after breaking up with his ex-girlfriend.
02:33Whitley and Christian started dating in the summer of 2013.
02:37At first, we thought she was nice.
02:40She was a beautiful and very polite girl.
02:43Christian doesn't just like her.
02:46He wants Whitley to come live with him and his family.
02:49Her family didn't treat her well.
02:52They had kicked her out of the house.
02:53I think he said that her mother had remarried and that her stepfather had children.
02:57And that's why there was no room for her in the house.
02:59So they decide to open their arms and their home to his new girlfriend.
03:05I felt sorry for her, and he was very worried about it, saying that we needed to help her.
03:12I accepted without question.
03:13And she came to live with us.
03:15And it's clear that Christian is very much in love with Whitley.
03:19Christian bought a BMW.
03:21He said he bought it to save on gas.
03:24But the truth is that he bought a car for Whitley so he wouldn't be without a car while he was there.
03:28on the tugboat.
03:30But after less than a month, things between Whitley and Christian's family become tense.
03:37There were no limits.
03:39We were always in conflict at home because of Whitley.
03:42It was a hopeless situation.
03:44Because if we let her do whatever she wanted in our house, Christian would stay there.
03:49But if we set limits, he would get angry and wouldn't stay home.
03:54Christian's family says Whitley has to leave.
03:58Frustrated, Christian says he's leaving too.
04:02In December, the couple will be living in the apartment of Josh, Christian's older brother.
04:08They try to make it work and even travel for a romantic weekend.
04:14He and Whitley traveled to enjoy the mountains.
04:17The following week, on February 22nd, Christian departs for a month-long voyage on the tugboat, leaving Whitley alone.
04:28He was supposed to stay on the boat for 30 days until the end of March.
04:31But just three days after the Christian set sail on his journey down the Mississippi River, things took an unexpected turn.
04:39He begins receiving a series of unsettling calls, supposedly from a friend of his from Whitley named Dylan.
04:48Christian began receiving calls from Dylan, saying that Whitley was riding in his car with a drug dealer.
04:55That's what she said. And of course, he became suspicious of her and what she was doing.
05:00Christian is unsure what to think.
05:03He was there, working hard and giving her all his support, while Whitley was out there with...
05:11other people.
05:12Christian tells a coworker that he's going home to take care of some things.
05:16He plans to lock up the apartment, take the car back, and send Whitley to her grandmother's house.
05:22So, in the early morning of February 26th, he makes arrangements to disembark.
05:28Christian always had his head on straight. He always thought things through before reacting.
05:34I can't think of anything that would make him want to leave the boat.
05:37Christian informs the captain that he won't be long.
05:46I spoke to him on the morning of the 26th. He said, "I'm going to take the ferry, I can't talk."
05:52I'll call you later. I love you.
05:54And that was it, it was a four-minute conversation.
05:57Christian's mother has no way of knowing that this will be the last time she hears his voice.
06:04of the son.
06:06At eight o'clock that morning, Dylan picks up Christian at a port in New Orleans.
06:12They travel over 320 kilometers to Christian's apartment in Meridian.
06:18Arriving there around noon.
06:20Whitley is there and, according to Dylan, the couple begins to argue.
06:25Dylan said he felt uncomfortable with them arguing, so he left.
06:31And Dylan says that when he returned, several hours later, something was terribly wrong.
06:37Christian!
06:39What is the emergency?
06:42A suicide has occurred.
06:43Did you say suicide?
06:45That's what I said.
06:46You don't know how it happened? You don't have a weapon or anything like that?
06:49He shot himself.
06:51Did he shoot himself?
06:52Yeah, I went out, went to the market, and when he went into the bathroom, I thought he was just going to take a shower.
07:00Okay, he said he was going to do that?
07:02No.
07:03Okay.
07:05At five past five in the afternoon, investigators arrive at Christian's apartment.
07:10They find him kneeling on the floor of the second-floor bathroom.
07:14The upper part of her body is slumped over the bathtub.
07:18His arms were at his sides, with a single gunshot wound to the head.
07:23At 5:43 PM, the police chief appears and, in less than forty-five
07:29Minutes after the investigation began, he ordered the investigators to officially declare the death a suicide.
07:38He showed up and told them to close the case, it was suicide, they could go.
07:43A police officer delivers the devastating news to Christian's family.
07:48My father called and said we had to go back home, that a tragedy had happened.
07:53And I asked what he was talking about and he said, you need to go back home, it's a tragedy involving one of the
07:58your children.
08:05Why would a 21-year-old, ambitious and successful young man want to take his own life?
08:13For Christian's family, this makes no sense.
08:17I spoke with Christian that morning and nothing out of the ordinary happened.
08:21No, not Christian. Even when we were away working and going through tough times, he was never sad.
08:28He was always cheerful and always making people smile and have fun. That's just how he was.
08:34So why would he want to kill himself?
08:36What will Whitley and Dylan have to say?
08:40They were the last people to see Christian alive.
08:44Whitley told police that she was asleep and didn't hear the gunshot.
08:48It was an apartment of 74 square meters. At most.
08:53What if you can't hear a .45 caliber pistol being fired, even though you're 10 meters away?
09:00Dylan claims that he wasn't there when Christian died.
09:04After leaving to go to the market, he says that when he returned, he found Whitley asleep and Christian dead in the
09:12second floor bathroom.
09:14He opened the door and saw Christian lying on the bathtub.
09:20He called Whitley, who went upstairs, ran to the bathroom and grabbed Christian.
09:28In the call to the police, Dylan implies that Whitley went into the bathroom and was hugging Christian.
09:35You can hear her crying in the background.
09:39She's not... Please try not to touch anything.
09:42Whitley! Whitley!
09:43She is fine?
09:44Come over here. They're asking you not to touch anything.
09:47Try to move her from that location.
09:49Come here, Whitley!
09:52Whitley, come here!
09:55But for Christian's family, their story doesn't add up.
10:00There wasn't a single drop of blood on her. How could she hug him if there wasn't any blood on her clothes?
10:05This is one of the many questions surrounding Christian's tragic death.
10:10As the investigation deepens, what else will be revealed?
10:17On February 26, 2014, 21-year-old Christian Andréacchio was found dead in his own bathroom, with a
10:27gunshot wound to the head.
10:29Whitley Goodman, his girlfriend, and Dylan, their friend, claim that Christian committed suicide.
10:35But for Christian's family, their story doesn't add up.
10:39Dylan insists that Christian accused Whitley of betrayal hours before he died, and that he pointed the gun at him.
10:46He turned to his own head and asked if Whitley truly loved him.
10:50He said he would kill himself if she ended up like him?
10:54That wasn't Christian.
10:56And surely, he wouldn't kill himself over a girl.
11:00But investigators find a series of passionate text messages from Christian to Whitley, where he appears ready.
11:08To do exactly that, to kill yourself over a girl.
11:13A message from Christian to Whitley, sent at 2:39 AM on February 26th,
11:20it says
11:20Let's kill ourselves and end this.
11:23And 7 minutes later, if that doesn't work when I get to my apartment, I'm going to put the gun in my...
11:30Mouth and put an end to it.
11:32But the family discovers that the date and time settings on Christian's phone model can be reset.
11:40to make it seem as if the messages were sent earlier than they actually were.
11:46And he says Dylan knows how to do that.
11:49Dylan knew a lot about cell phones.
11:53That's what he did to earn money.
11:55I repaired cell phones, and I sold and resold cell phones.
11:59The family believes Christian died as soon as he arrived in Meridian, around noon.
12:05Long before the call to the police, at 4:45 PM.
12:10The family is wondering if Dylan and Whitley wrote and sent the messages from Christian's phone, after
12:17that he was already dead.
12:19They had access to his phone for hours.
12:22And they had every possible option to change whatever they wanted.
12:30Well, in my opinion, and of course I understand that people will say that we don't want to take that into account.
12:38The messages, because they go against what we truly want to believe.
12:44But there are so many opportunities and so many things that could have been tampered with, since they were text messages and
12:53They don't appear on the phone bill.
12:55They go through data and there's literally no way to know who sent those messages.
13:01So, unless we had Whitley's phone number, but her phone was broken and disappeared.
13:10But because we don't have her phone number and nothing shows up in the records, because they're just text messages, then
13:15There is no way to tell that it was Christian who sent those messages.
13:21But no evidence has emerged to show that Whitley or Dylan altered anything on Christian's phone.
13:28Another possible warning sign?
13:30Dylan's and Whitley's versions don't seem to match.
13:34When investigators ask Whitley if Christian ever talked about killing himself, she replies, "I don't think so."
13:41When the police conducted tests to check for gunpowder residue, the results showed residue on Christian's hands and also
13:49Dylan's and Whitley's.
13:52How can you have residue on your hand, here, here, and here, if you've never even been inside that place?
14:01There was no reason for Dylan to have gunpowder residue on his hands, because he claims he wasn't even in the apartment.
14:07when the shot was fired.
14:08Whitley said she was asleep and didn't see anything, so she shouldn't have had any gunpowder residue.
14:14But Whitley claims she has an explanation.
14:17She tells investigators that she went out with friends to practice shooting the previous night.
14:22But after the Meridian police questioned her about it, it seems they never questioned Whitley again.
14:29Therefore, it was never determined whether the gunpowder residue matches the weapon that killed Christian.
14:38Convinced that something is amiss, Christian's mother implores the police to investigate further.
14:44I basically asked them to reopen the case, to investigate the case, and they quickly ignored me and said that
14:53It was suicide and they weren't going to do anything about it.
14:56Christian's family, desperate for a fair investigation, hires independent experts, including Max Meis, a former police officer who...
15:04He became a private detective.
15:06His experience sheds light on some pertinent questions the family has.
15:11You cannot conclude before the investigation whether it is a suicide or a homicide.
15:20The final outcome of the investigation will determine that.
15:24In this particular case, there was a 45-minute investigation.
15:30And when he analyzes the photos from the crime scene, his suspicions grow.
15:37Christian is right-footed and the shot was taken from the right side of the field.
15:41But the weapon is found under his left thigh.
15:46He shoots himself in the head with a .45 caliber semi-automatic weapon.
15:50After firing the shot, he passes the gun over here and falls onto the bathtub.
15:54And that's where the weapon is.
15:56This makes no sense at all.
15:59And the questions don't stop.
16:01One of the things that was missing was Christian's cell phone.
16:05They asked Whitley about the cell phone.
16:08She replied, "I don't know where it is, I don't know where it is."
16:10And he said, well, nobody leaves here until we find that cell phone.
16:14Suddenly, Whitley reached into her purse and grabbed her phone.
16:20This didn't lead the investigators working on the case to ask, why?
16:26Christian's family is also seeking help from Dr. Jonathan Arden, a renowned forensic pathologist who has worked on cases.
16:35Famous examples include the Washington shooter and the Anthrax attack on Capitol Hill.
16:41He also immediately becomes concerned about the position of the weapon.
16:45I can't imagine in any way that he could hold the gun in his right hand, with the gun in his...
16:54right temple, fire the weapon, wounding his own brain, and then thrust the weapon between his left thigh and the
17:02bathtub.
17:03And he notices something strange about Christian's body position.
17:19He also questions why the weapon was found unlocked.
17:25This is a semi-automatic pistol.
17:27And the nature of semi-automatic pistols is such that when you pull the trigger and fire, it ejects the casing.
17:36It fires the spent cartridge and reloads for the next shot.
17:41The hammer on the pistol was not cocked when they found the weapon.
17:46So, someone must have tampered with that weapon in order to unlock or disarm the hammer.
17:55All of this leads Dr. Arden to a sinister conclusion.
18:00The body was moved.
18:01The death scene was staged to make it look like a suicide.
18:07There is clear evidence that it is a homicide.
18:12Clearly, it wasn't suicide.
18:15In addition to Dr. Arden, several other independent experts have concluded that Christian did not take his own life.
18:23The forensic evidence and all other indications do not match the version that he committed suicide.
18:30Christian's family believes he was murdered.
18:34But if it's true that Whitley tried to hug Christian's body after the shooting, perhaps that explains the...
18:41awkward position of the body and the weapon.
18:44And as Christian's family and the hired detectives examine the evidence, another clue emerges.
18:52Christian had told his parents that he wanted to put Whitley on his life insurance policy in case of
18:59an accident on the boat.
19:00He needed to change his existing life insurance policy with the company and put Whitley in his name.
19:06as a beneficiary.
19:08I told him, no, you've known this girl for months, man. Don't change anything, don't involve her in anything.
19:15People who worked with him on the boat said he listed Whitley as the beneficiary.
19:20They said he took out a million-dollar life insurance policy.
19:22Did he say that to Whitley?
19:25There is no indication that Whitley knew that Christian had named her as a beneficiary of the insurance policy, or that she
19:32I asked him to do it.
19:34But what Dylan did on the day Christian died raises even more questions.
19:39Could this story get even more complicated?
19:44The family is wondering if money was a motivating factor in Christian's death.
19:50There's another strange message on Christian's phone, instructing Dylan to withdraw money from his account.
19:58According to Dylan, Christian gave him the debit card.
20:03He went to the ATM and tried to withdraw the money, but he didn't have a PIN.
20:08So, what did he do?
20:09We're not going to say he's a genius, are we?
20:12He went into the bank and tried to withdraw the money and told them,
20:17Christian told me to come here and collect all his money.
20:22But Dylan and Whitley categorically insist that Christian took his own life.
20:27And there is nothing suspicious about his death or about their actions surrounding his death.
20:34None of them agreed to give an interview for this program.
20:37Meanwhile, the Meridian police refuse to reopen the case.
20:41And two state investigations conclude that Christian killed himself.
20:46However, an astonishing event has occurred.
20:49On January 23, 2017, arrest warrants for homicide were issued.
20:56This applies to both Dylan and Whitley.
20:59But, to the family's disappointment, the police never execute the warrants.
21:03And Dylan and Whitley aren't arrested.
21:05The city prosecutor decided that, instead of arresting the two,
21:11I was going to let them go to the jury trial and wait.
21:14If they were indicted, then they would be arrested.
21:17In December 2017, the jury decided not to indict Whitley and Dylan.
21:23Christian's family is devastated, and they claim that the prosecution jury...
21:28They never listened to the key witnesses, including the independent experts they hired.
21:34Everything was distorted to arrive at the conclusion of suicide.
21:38Their stories don't match up.
21:40Christian's family begins to fear that the truth will never be revealed.
21:45And they are not the only ones who have doubts about whether Christian took his own life.
21:51The case is generating intense debate on social media.
21:56In June 2019, after a year of research,
22:01An investigative podcast called Culpable has been launched.
22:05The 15-episode series focuses entirely on Christian's death.
22:11I thought they did a very good job and were very ethical in everything.
22:15It was clear that they became emotionally involved with us, with the family, with the story, and with Christian.
22:20It makes a big difference to know that you're not alone.
22:22The podcast producers are so convinced that Christian was murdered.
22:28They offered a reward of $100,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
22:35In August 2019, prosecutor Cassie Coleman was questioned about Christian's death.
22:42She states that she always welcomes new evidence, but makes no promise to reopen the case.
22:49Any additional information, whether collected or known by other individuals, should be provided by them.
22:56Now, six years after Christian's death,
23:00Whitley is suing Christian's family and the producers of the Culpable podcast.
23:05Claiming that they falsely accused her of involvement in a murder.
23:11But Christian's family believes this process will work in their favor.
23:15Since they can now question witnesses.
23:19Our goal is simply to reopen the case and have it presented fairly to the jury.
23:23accusation.
23:24And when I say fair, I include showing things that might make someone question things.
23:29I'm talking about text messages, showing them,
23:32But you also have to show all the other evidence that makes us think that way.
23:36Hmm, I'm not sure about that.
23:39And that was something that had never been done before.
23:41And for us to feel confident, for the case to be presented fairly,
23:46We asked if we could be there.
23:49They wouldn't let them.
23:50We asked if we could hire a court clerk.
23:53Since there are no records of the prosecution jury.
23:55No, we can't do that either.
23:57Thus, we were blocked at every turn.
23:59To find out what was said.
24:01And we want a special prosecutor to come and take on this case.
24:10And while they wait, they refuse to lose hope.
24:15My sister has to fight tooth and nail for justice for her son.
24:22Christian's chapter isn't going to be what they want it to be.
24:26It's not going to be what's there now.
24:29We're still waiting for the final chapter.
24:32And I refuse to let them write.
24:36He's the one who's going to write it.
24:44Four years later, in August 2018,
24:48A family in El Cajon, California, is also experiencing a traumatic loss.
24:54This is the hometown of 19-year-old Kiera Bergman.
24:58A generous and multi-talented young woman, part of a very close-knit family.
25:03And this is the last known photo of her.
25:07Kiera was an amazing child and grew into a wonderful young woman.
25:13She was a very creative, artistic, and very outgoing person.
25:17We were very close.
25:19She certainly had a free spirit.
25:21She was a very happy person.
25:23She had a very generous heart.
25:25He would do anything for people.
25:27She often tried to make us stop,
25:31So she can give money to the homeless.
25:34When Kiera finishes high school,
25:36She wins a scholarship to a cosmetology program.
25:40As far as I can remember,
25:41She was always watching tutorials on the internet.
25:43Regarding how to style hair,
25:45How to do makeup.
25:46I went to her course a few times and she cut and colored my hair.
25:50She loved it, it was part of her.
25:52In November 2017,
25:55Kiera finds a new passion when she meets 22-year-old John Clark.
26:01A friend of hers created an account on a website.
26:03That's where she met John.
26:05She said she liked him very much and that he was nice to her.
26:09Our daughters have never dated.
26:11And that was the first guy she fell in love with.
26:15And, as we do when we are young,
26:18She lost her mind.
26:20In March 2018,
26:22After only four months of dating,
26:25Kiera makes a big change.
26:26She drops out of her cosmetology course.
26:29And she decides to move with John to Glendale, Arizona.
26:33We were all surprised.
26:34He wanted to go back to Phoenix.
26:37Where I had lived before.
26:38So she decided she would leave with him.
26:40My daughter had a friend who lived there.
26:42It was not, in fact, a support network.
26:44But her new life with John doesn't last long.
26:48She said that, two weeks after moving there,
26:51He broke up with her.
26:52After the separation,
26:54Kiera is going to live with Destiny.
26:56One of her best friends from school days.
26:59She had a job, she had her apartment.
27:01She was taking care of herself.
27:02And I was proud of her.
27:04But, in the middle of June,
27:05The couple reconciles and John moves into her house.
27:09Suddenly, she says,
27:11I made peace with John.
27:12And everyone, why?
27:13Nobody understood.
27:14And she said that he had changed a lot and that he wanted to work things out.
27:19They would make up, fight, and then make up again.
27:22She tried to reassure me that things were going to be different and that everything was going to be okay.
27:26But Kiera and John's love story takes another sudden turn.
27:31On Monday, August 6th,
27:33Destiny makes a call to Kiera's mother in California.
27:37She says she hasn't heard from her friend for two days.
27:41Then she told me that Kiera was missing and hadn't gone to work.
27:46I started to panic.
27:47And I said,
27:48Wait,
27:50What does she mean by not seeing Kiera for a few days?
27:52It was not in her nature to not show up for work and also not call to let people know.
27:56She would never do that.
27:58Kiera's family immediately senses that something is wrong.
28:02They are desperate to know where Kiera is.
28:08On Monday, August 6, 2018,
28:12Destiny, a friend of Kiera Bergman,
28:14File a missing person report with the Phoenix police.
28:18Kiera was last seen two days before.
28:22August 4th.
28:24That day, Destiny received a strange message from Kiera.
28:29She texted her friend, saying she was leaving.
28:32The message says,
28:33Friend, my phone battery is dying.
28:36But I'm fed up with John.
28:38I met this guy a few days ago when I went to the market.
28:41And I asked him to come and get me.
28:42That's why I'm relaxing at his house.
28:44When the battery is fully charged, I'll turn it on.
28:46Make sure John leaves.
28:48I found that very strange.
28:51As her mother, I knew she wouldn't date just any guy.
28:55And the way the message is written is even stranger.
28:59She never wrote more than two lines.
29:01and all the words were abbreviated.
29:03She didn't send long messages.
29:05Since the message says that Kiera went out with a guy she recently met,
29:10Investigators have to consider the possibility that she disappeared of her own accord.
29:15Is it an escape?
29:17Is she an adult leaving of her own accord?
29:20Or is there something more serious about this?
29:22Something about Kiera's disappearance doesn't make sense.
29:26She left behind her wallet, car keys, and credit cards.
29:30Why would she leave all that behind?
29:32The only thing missing is Kiera's cell phone.
29:37Family and friends are trying to get in touch, but the cell phone is turned off.
29:42The next day, Kiera's family makes the 5-hour trip from El Cajón to Glendale.
29:48We organized search groups and put up posters throughout the community.
29:53But I knew we had to do something.
29:56The first few days were the most important.
29:58Kiera's sister creates a profile on social media and starts using the hashtag
30:03Bring Kiera home.
30:05Six days without messages, without phone calls, and without any sign of their daughter.
30:10They are desperately asking for answers.
30:12A week goes by and no one has heard from Kiera yet.
30:16On Saturday, August 11th, family and friends organize a vigil of hope.
30:24Some of my work colleagues and also people from the building attended.
30:28As the days drag on without any news of Kiera, the police begin to doubt...
30:33that she simply left of her own accord.
30:37On second thought, Kiera's family realizes something was wrong shortly before she disappeared.
30:42She stopped being the happy person she always was and became a very withdrawn person.
30:48She didn't share, and we didn't see her often.
30:52I don't know, it's like she becomes a different person.
30:56They believe that Kiera's personality began to change as her boyfriend exercised...
31:01more control over her life.
31:04I felt that something was wrong with him.
31:07Kiera was acting differently.
31:09Like, I'd ask her a question and he'd look at her and answer for her.
31:14And nothing she did went unnoticed by him.
31:18He needed to know everything she was doing at all times.
31:21Destiny said he wouldn't even let her go to the market alone.
31:25He had to go with her.
31:27The police locate John.
31:29He says he saw Kiera on the day she disappeared.
31:33He received a message from her at 10:27 AM, asking him to pick her up.
31:39at work, because she wasn't feeling well.
31:43John said he arrived at 10:36 and took her to the apartment.
31:47Then they started fighting.
31:50They argued because he was thinking of moving to Texas with his aunt.
31:54He was unemployed.
31:56No, I was earning money and living with Kiera and her friend.
32:00John tells the police that, although it was his birthday, Kiera left the apartment.
32:06after the argument, and he claims he hasn't spoken to her since.
32:10The investigators don't believe the story.
32:13And when they ask John to take a lie detector test, he refuses.
32:18If you're as innocent as you say, what's the problem with doing it?
32:22Go through a lie detector test, otherwise you'll look guilty.
32:26Police search John's car and are shocked by what they find.
32:31More than 20 California ID documents belonging to other people.
32:36I knew he was a dishonest person.
32:39Or at least I had my suspicions.
32:42So, I wasn't surprised by that at all.
32:44I found it on the internet.
32:46All he posted was of him using drugs and doing things like that.
32:50And then, when Kira disappeared and all these things happened, many of these posts vanished.
32:57He erased everything.
32:58John was arrested, but released from police custody the same day.
33:03I had a feeling he had something to do with all of this.
33:06Either he knew something about her disappearance.
33:11From the start, I knew I didn't like him.
33:14And I tried to warn Kira.
33:17But all I managed to do was create a barrier between us.
33:19Actually, we hadn't spoken for two months, since she disappeared.
33:23And that's something that will stay with me and that I will regret forever.
33:27On August 15th, two days after being released,
33:32John gives an interview and tells his side of the story.
33:36Kira has been missing since August 4th, which is my birthday.
33:39We went back home and relaxed.
33:41She was trying to cheer me up because it was my birthday.
33:44But I was kind of upset because we weren't going to do anything.
33:47And then we started arguing, she argued with me, she got angry.
33:51And then she left.
33:53We saw that and were outraged.
33:56I mean, the way he spoke and how he presented himself,
34:01He was more concerned with saying that nobody celebrated his birthday.
34:05more about Kira's disappearance.
34:07Despite his family's suspicions, John insists he is innocent.
34:12I have nothing to do with what's going on, man.
34:16On August 17th, two days after the interview,
34:20John is arrested again.
34:22He is indicted on 22 counts of theft of identity documents.
34:27He faces two counts of forgery and has had bail set at $25,000.
34:33A week later, the police announce that they suspect a crime has been committed in Kira's case.
34:38I was very scared because it meant she could be dead anywhere.
34:43and that I would never speak to, see, or do anything with my sister again.
34:50Two weeks later, Kira is still missing.
34:54On September 3rd, on a deserted stretch of highway, 80 kilometers from the city,
35:00A cyclist makes a terrible discovery.
35:05He came across a decomposing body and, obviously, decided to call the police.
35:12Two days later, the remains are identified.
35:16It's Kira.
35:19This morning, they received a phone call from the investigators.
35:23The worst possible call.
35:24Their daughter was dead.
35:26I answered the phone and he asked who it was and then if I was seated.
35:32So, I knew right away when he asked that, I knew what he was going to say.
35:36And I couldn't take it anymore.
35:38She hung up the phone and started crying hysterically, and I asked her what was wrong.
35:43But I knew.
35:44And I started to cry and...
35:47It was awful.
35:48I will never forget that day.
35:50Since so much time had passed, the exact cause of death is undetermined.
35:55But one thing is certain.
35:57At that point it became quite obvious that it was a homicide, that it had been deliberate, and that someone was responsible for the disappearance.
36:07and because of her death.
36:10I remember thinking, who, what kind of person, not even a person, an animal would do such a thing to...
36:19another person, abandoning the body in that way.
36:22Investigators are turning their attention to the last known person to have seen Kira alive, John Clark.
36:30Her boyfriend.
36:31At that time, John was still in jail on charges of stealing identity documents and forgery.
36:38They interrogate John for the second time.
36:41The police were talking to John about the location where Kira's body was found.
36:45They asked him if he knew that stretch of highway, and he replied that he did.
36:49When the investigators inform John that this is where Kira's body was found, he immediately asks...
36:55a lawyer.
36:56The whole time she was missing, I had a feeling that John had done something or had something going on.
37:01Something to do with what happened.
37:03A reporter asked me if I think John is involved.
37:06I replied, "I am absolutely certain."
37:08On September 11, 2018, John was charged with Kira's murder.
37:14Police cite an anonymous witness who claims John had a history of violence against her.
37:20The witness claims that on one occasion it was observed that Kira had bruises on her body.
37:26And that John used to restrain Kira by placing his hand against her chest and throat.
37:31The witness later revealed to be Destiny, Kira's best friend and roommate.
37:38In the court document, the friend told the police that John was very controlling.
37:44Another issue was that there were many violent arguments between the two.
37:51As authorities continue their investigation, witness accounts reveal that John was behaving strangely in the
37:59The night Kira disappeared.
38:01We spoke with the neighbors across the street, and they said that on that Saturday, the day she disappeared, the
38:10John and another guy went in and out of the apartment carrying garbage bags.
38:14And then this friend showed up with his car and they loaded bags of trash into his car and
38:19For Kira's.
38:20They found the top sheet, and another piece of his bedding set was found in the vehicle.
38:26And my first thought was, why would she have a sheet that matches her bed linens?
38:33Would he be in the car?
38:34Unless he wrapped her in a sheet and took her out of the apartment.
38:38The police examine the records from the relay towers and discover that on August 7th, four days after
38:46Kira's disappearance,
38:48Both her phone and John's phone were connected to the same Wi-Fi router.
38:53This kind of ended up incriminating John, because they were able to connect the text messages that were coming in and
39:00leaving Kira's phone,
39:02They were coming and going from inside his apartment after her disappearance.
39:06It's a great discovery.
39:08Police have now concluded that the mysterious message Destiny received on August 4th was not sent.
39:15Kira sent it, John sent it.
39:17The police also learn that on that same day, John spoke with a friend on social media about how...
39:24The police could use an app to locate Kira's phone.
39:28And then, suddenly, her phone is switched off.
39:33But why kill Kira?
39:37I think it was because she said she was thinking about moving back home.
39:43And he was living with her, using her money.
39:47He was unemployed, so everything he had came from her.
39:50And if she left, what would he do then?
39:53He would have nowhere to live and no money to do anything.
39:56And according to Kira's family, John may have had a financial incentive to want to get rid of her.
40:02her.
40:03He manipulated Kira into taking out a loan using the car she had held as collateral since leaving.
40:08San Diego.
40:09On September 14, 2018, the jury indicted John Clark for first-degree murder.
40:17He pleads not guilty.
40:19However, there is an unexpected setback.
40:22To Kira's family's surprise, the case is dismissed.
40:27This is something Kira's family hadn't anticipated.
40:30They had been waiting for more than a year for some kind of resolution, with the trial scheduled to begin this month.
40:36But now, they won't have that.
40:38They argued that the comments made by an investigator were inaccurate.
40:43And that there was new evidence that could acquit him in a trial.
40:48But eight months later, on May 14, 2019, things took a different turn.
40:54A new jury of prosecutors delivers a new indictment for first-degree murder.
40:59Look, we'll never get the justice Kira deserves.
41:03But we want some kind of justice.
41:06We want him to be held accountable for what he did.
41:10But that's not the end of the story for Kira's family.
41:14In April 2020, they were devastated again when a judge dismissed the case for the second time.
41:21claiming that the prosecution erred in manipulating the evidence.
41:25I was shocked and incredulous.
41:28I found that outrageous. I'll never be able to put an end to it.
41:31She's gone.
41:33So, what I want in this process is justice.
41:35And to know that he was convicted for what he did to Kira.
41:39Either way, I believe fate will take care of it.
41:43You can't kill someone and get away with it and live clean for the rest of your life.
41:49There needs to be a balance.
41:52I know that God will forgive him.
41:54But as far as I'm concerned, I'll never be able to forgive.
41:57And I hope he goes to hell.
42:00Kirsten keeps her daughter's memory alive by helping other victims of domestic violence.
42:06She collected thousands of donations.
42:10She was in a situation of domestic violence.
42:14So, I just want to say that if you're in a situation like that, I know it's terrifying.
42:20I know you feel like no one will be able to understand you, help you, or support you.
42:27Don't be afraid.
42:28Because there are people who can help.
42:31I don't want to see this happen to anyone else.
42:33Never.
42:34And while they continue to wait for justice, Kara's family and friends say they will always feel the loss.
42:42The pain of losing a vibrant woman who died so young.
42:46It's really hard to know that, at least in this life, I'll never be able to see my daughter again.
42:53It's very difficult to live with this.
42:55What has helped me overcome this is my faith in God and knowing that
43:00She is in heaven and I will see my daughter again.
43:04She was only 19 years old.
43:06When you're 19, you have your whole life ahead of you.
43:09I feel that too much was taken away from Kira.
43:12Not just her life, but her hopes and dreams and everything she wanted to be.
43:18I miss her so much.
