00:00great bobby belt bobby belt is an idiot don't make me take off my belt don't make me take
00:05off my belt we're not over to you bobby already gave you the time and the place
00:13yeah i do know this song it's a good song it's a great song it's so catchy it's a little
00:18bit of a
00:18kind of like a nora jones throwback i like this one a lot olivia dean man i need that was
00:23the
00:23song that uh we were talking about last time that i think was playing in the background to see why
00:27yeah you just love the lyrics more than i do but that's catchy beat yeah somebody texted in there
00:31like of course the only line bobby knew was the man i need and that's dac prescott that's the man
00:36i need
00:36wow what was the guy that the quarterback market needed let's talk about it in below the belt
00:40which is sponsored by academy sports and outdoors and window nation so there's an article up over
00:46at the athletic that's talking about how just tough the quarterback market looks like it's about to be
00:53this offseason it's i mean there's not always a lot of like really great options in terms of free
00:59agency either you have a quarterback very rarely maybe you trade for one or you're drafting one but
01:07it's a light draft not really any big time trade candidates out there and you've got just this
01:13hodgepodge of island of misfit toys that exists with the quarterback market with guys who have just
01:19floundered whether it be kyler murray or to a tunga vailoa or guys who have not gotten the the right
01:25opportunity yet jared stidham um malik willis in green bay you've got all these different options so
01:31jeff howe had written over at the athletic about how complicated the quarterback market is because of
01:37the lack of good options because of how people think the draft opportunity will be next year with
01:41the quarterbacks and it got me thinking about the quarterback market in general and how
01:51as much as i think they had to do what they did the cowboys they had to sign dak prescott
01:58it was
01:58not financially sustainable to let him go because they had restructured all this money they had built
02:04in this massive cap number that if he left all of it was going to have to be eaten right
02:10then whereas
02:10if he signed an extension they could spread some of that cap number out but it was going to just
02:14be
02:14a it would ruin you like it's if you're talking about like you're an individual and you were facing
02:20a similar financial situation your options would be like financial ruin or uh restructure some of my
02:25debt okay let's restructure some of my debt and that necessitated signing dak prescott and he had
02:31because of that all the leverage there's nothing you could do he signed that 60 million dollar deal
02:37and there was a little bit of okay well somebody will come around and eventually beat that yeah
02:43we are on 18 months now of dak prescott as the nfl's highest paid player oh has not moved has
02:52not
02:52really gotten close five million dollars clear got that 60 and so people always talk about
02:59setting the market oh you're going to reset the market you're going to do this you're going to do
03:03that and the quarterback position historically has been for what i mean in the cap era specifically
03:10the last 15 years you top the last guy that's what that's what it's been you the i remember cam
03:16newton signed a deal that made him i think the highest paid or the second highest paid and by the
03:21next off season he was i think outside the top 10 and that's just how quickly the market could go
03:28well you never want to be the team that finds out that market setting became market correcting
03:35and it feels like dak signed the market correction deal yep and this happened in 2019 ahead of the
03:432019 season the cowboys did this with ezekiel elliott where they were saying all right we're signing
03:48deals todd girley just got this well if girley got that let's try and sign this and they worked out
03:54and they paid him the deal they did and no one passed it after that until i think just barkley
04:00did recently and mcafree did but i mean it took six years to reset what ezekiel elliott had signed for
04:07and so you had just shifted the market so aggressively and this is just part of a larger
04:14team building conversation is what i'm getting at you did that with ezekiel elliott you appear like
04:20you've done that with dak prescott at the position that nobody thought was possible
04:27my question is are you going to do that if you do sign brandon aubrey to 10 billion
04:35is that the next market correction and it's on a much smaller scale right doesn't matter nearly as
04:39much but do you want to be the team that has corrected the market on three positions in the
04:43last seven years no and internally do you not look at it and go we have to figure out
04:50financially what we're what's going on by like to me that's enough of a a even as much as i
04:55want to
04:55and i understand logistics involved with it and the financial ramifications of letting him go you
05:01were you were screwed in leverage but it it doesn't feel like it should have just completely corrected
05:08the market to where nobody else comes in above that right josh allen couldn't have gotten 61
05:13jordan love you would think that there would be some sort of move there where somebody would be able
05:18to top that but this is again a an example of where the cowboys have put themselves financially
05:23this would make me i was thinking about this when i was walking back and forth with dak
05:27um in the lobby in san francisco and i was like that's the height i was looking at all these
05:34pro
05:34bowl players because we were in the sick hotel setup and multiple times i thought to myself that man is
05:41the highest paid man in here and one of the things i would brag about for the rest of my
05:46life
05:47if i was dak prescott is i was the highest paid player in the national football league for multiple
05:53years you said we're going on 18 months that's not going to get passed up in this offseason i don't
05:59think lamar they're trying to get something done with lamar but i didn't just have the title for two
06:05months three months six months i'm gonna tell my kids i was the highest paid player by five million
06:11dollars for years in the national football league and that should make jerry and steven so bitter
06:18not that they re-signed dak but that they it's like finding out that you overpaid on something
06:24you you wanted it you're glad you got it you needed it you had to have it but then you
06:31find out oh the
06:32next highest bid was 10k less than mine and you feel like a sucker and that's how it feel if
06:40i was
06:40the cowboys front office now obviously the micah parsons negotiations went sideways for reasons that
06:47had nothing to do with financial implications i don't think it did that's jerry jerry will say yeah
06:55that's exactly why i went sideways he's going to um go to you know his football grave saying
07:02it was a it was about 40 see but do but do you think he said he said we offered
07:09him it's like
07:09they're doing right now with aubrey we are offering you the highest paid kicker deal in nfl history
07:15but todd france and aubrey are saying we're so much better than that we're so much better than
07:22harrison bucker jerry offered micah more than tj watt that's the way it used to get done and that's the
07:28way you know i kind of liked it you don't the players association is loving the multiple million
07:36dollar leapfrog it used to be one dollar half a million more one dollar bob million dollars more
07:42but no the cowboys win blew it out of the water for dak and it's just been sitting there and
07:49and should
07:49sting them and and and jerry's like no my number was 40 41 you got 47 it's done is it
07:57a case where
07:58and i'm trying to see what date this was on aiden hutchinson i believe that was it was that after
08:05micah when aiden hutchinson got his extension done or was he i think he was before um okay let me
08:10look
08:11this up but i'm wondering if the cowboys look at it and say you know what even if that wasn't
08:20our
08:20intent was to to eventually split for micah like we we wanted to get it done got sideways over hurt
08:28feelings and things like that we avoided potentially another market correction aiden hutchinson was after
08:35micah oh my bad and aiden fell short of micah by one and a half million annually so micah got
08:42damn
08:42near 47 million which was a huge we're talking about 40 he went up to 47 and i wonder if
08:48they
08:48look and go you know we we avoided that it's kind of nice to have some some money we can
08:55move around
08:55right now yeah like we kind of like looking at this and is that why the aubrey thing even on
09:01a
09:01smaller scale do they go you know what uh we don't we don't have to pay yeah i know he's
09:05ours
09:06but we don't have to pay the highest end like let's be a little more cutthroat with it let's be
09:09belichick with it you can make five million this year unless somebody wants to give us a second round
09:13pick right like i wonder if it's just there's a little bit of you've been burned financially enough
09:19times or or just taken to the to the cleaners enough times that it's a little bit like i'm i'm
09:28done
09:29with this i don't want to i don't want to spend this eventually one day choppy's gonna stop
09:33wanting to just freely spend what he does eventually one day i'm gonna stop giving
09:36200 tips at open bars that that will end one day because i'll be like i'm tired of doing that
09:41it does look like an evolution to me no i think if they get too i'm tired i'm running it
09:48let's just
09:48all right fine y'all do something different then see if that works maybe i i still think this is
09:54them
09:55just being like when you guys want to come back down to earth from 10 million aubrey and camp not
09:59france then you can get then you can you can come to us or we'll slice your 10 million and
10:05have him
10:05make five or we'll get a second round pick the cowboys in this instance i do feel like have the
10:11legitimate leverage because i don't think brandon aubrey is gonna i don't think a kicker is gonna make
10:17the noise of cd lamb and micah parsons um so i i feel like they do have the legitimate leverage
10:23but
10:24brandon aubrey and todd france they got to come back down to earth to eight and the cowboys may
10:28not want to pay that because they're like we're still offering you the highest in the league look
10:31giving him 6.5 to me is i'm not gonna say unfair like he deserves more than that just in
10:41terms of
10:42what he's done and what he is yeah you know he deserves at least seven yeah if i was if
10:47i was his
10:47agent yeah i would want i'd be like no matter what i'd be asked for i'd be like i really
10:52don't feel
10:52like i should settle for less than seven no doubt absolutely but like again that's that's one of
10:57those things where i think this case that's not a market correction it's at seven no no but but if
11:03they were to go like when adam schefter yesterday i saw him i'd pay him 12 maybe yeah and it's
11:07like
11:07what no bye are there people like you because schefter i imagine talks based on what he hears from
11:12people are there people who tell you that that if i had brandon aubrey i'd pay him 12 million if
11:16that's
11:16the case i hope he's relaying information because that means someone's going to give me a second
11:21yeah and if someone pays him 10 or 12 i feel even better about losing him because i personally
11:28don't want to pay him he can't get double digits per year here give me the second round pick i
11:33mean
11:33i i always just apply it like this would you be brandon no matter how good people claimed he was
11:39in a scouting report would you be angry if at any point the cowboys drafted a kicker in the second
11:43round yes yeah because everybody goes like your your ceiling on a second round should be better than
11:49no matter how good a kicker is yeah and think about let's just say you draft a kicker what will
11:54they make in the in the fifth oh yeah they'll make um like probably it should be like on average
12:01like one and a half to two million okay in the fifth like like over the life per year so
12:07they'll
12:07get a big ball they'll get a bonus at the start and then they'll have like minimum contracts right so
12:11i'm basically saving eight million dollars for another player yeah i have an eight million dollar
12:17player i can get or i can add eight million dollars to a couple million dollars left over
12:21for a 10 million dollar player for an 11 million dollar player so deron bland when he signed this
12:26is 2022 so things have gone up a little bit but he was a fifth round pick a four-year
12:30contract he was
12:313.9 million so a million eight million dollar savings potentially
