Taiwan is stepping up its push into quantum computing, with President Lai Ching-te unveiling a new industry strategy. Lai said Taiwan can not only develop and manufacture its own quantum chips but also build quantum computers. Officials and industry figures say Taiwan’s semiconductor expertise could help it become a key part of the global quantum supply chain.

00:00This is a quantum computer, or at least part of one.
00:03It's made by the Finnish company IQM, but it's here at a research center in northern
00:08Taiwan's Shenzhou city, where, at an event today, the country laid out its strategy to
00:13become a major player in this emerging industry.
00:16This event at the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute is bringing together a mix of global
00:22suppliers, government-backed labs, and university teams, and they're here showing off models
00:27of quantum computers, along with the chips, modules, and control systems behind them.
00:31As part of the government's push for its ten major AI infrastructure projects, President
00:36Lai Qingde said the country's quantum plan is now moving into a new phase.
00:40We can not only be able to manage, but also be able to manage the digital computing machines.
00:48We also have the ability to build digital computing machines.
00:52Quantum computers use special units called qubits to perform calculations.
00:56In certain cases, many times faster than traditional computers.
01:00It has potential uses in healthcare, finance, encryption, and even AI, though the technology
01:05remains experimental.
01:07Taiwan has been trying to leverage its global status in chipmaking to boost its quantum industry.
01:12And those from companies like U.S.-based Seek say this may be a goal Taiwan can achieve.
01:18I think they can, because if you really break it down, right, the quantum computer, if you
01:23really, like, piece by piece, right, I mean, a lot of things can be learned, can be used,
01:29utilized, really coming from the chip industry.
01:32Maybe the material is different, the design architecture is different, but if you're talking
01:36about, like, core technology, really, there's so many, so much overlap.
01:41Companies across the world are pouring billions into quantum computing, a market expected to
01:47surpass 20 billion U.S. dollars globally by 2030.
01:51Taiwan isn't trying to dominate every part of quantum science, but it is trying to become
01:56indispensable in the supply chains that power it.
