Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has announced new startup investments and collaborations in Taiwan with his venture capital firm Playground Global. The firm highlighted startups working on silicon photonics and power delivery for chips to tackle bottlenecks in performance and efficiency. Gelsinger also cautioned that Taiwan’s biggest challenge is energy, urging more capacity and greater resilience to sustain economic growth.

00:00Pat Gelsinger, former CEO of U.S. chip giant Intel, is in Taipei with his new venture capital firm,
00:06announcing several new investments and collaborations here.
00:10Gelsinger, who ran Intel for four years, has visited Taiwan several times in recent years.
00:15He praised the country's technological prowess during his speech.
00:18There is no place like Taiwan.
00:21I sometimes joke that you can have an idea at breakfast,
00:24you can have a prototype by lunch, and you can have manufacturing by dinner.
00:30Gelsinger's new firm Playground Global publicly introduced two new portfolio companies,
00:35as well as Taiwan-based partnerships with startups it's invested in.
00:39Companies present included those working on silicon photonics and power delivery for chips,
00:43cutting-edge technologies aimed at solving the main bottlenecks of computing speed and efficiency,
00:48which analysts say are key.
00:50I'm the most excited for various technologies in power delivery.
00:54That's an area that hasn't been innovated on that much over the last two decades,
00:58and there's a lot of innovations that can come.
01:01The former tech boss also answered questions from the media.
01:04Asked about his thoughts on AI, he downplayed concerns over an investment bubble
01:08and called AI a foundational technology.
01:11He also waded into the energy debate in Taiwan,
01:13warning the country would need to address its power supply issues to stay ahead of the curve.
01:18The greatest issue in Taiwan, right, isn't even software, right, in architecture.
01:24It is energy, right?
01:26You are not in a position to have a resilient energy supply chain,
01:30and that I think puts your entire industry in a very precarious state.
01:34But those concerns haven't slowed down investments in the country.
01:38Gelsinger's announcements seem to be a vote of confidence in the future of AI
01:42and in Taiwan's tech manufacturing industry
01:45from one of the biggest names in the business.
