Hakeem Jeffries reacted sharply to the removal of Kristi Noem as U.S. Homeland Security Secretary by Donald Trump. Jeffries said bluntly, “Kristi Noem is gone — good riddance. She was a disaster,” accusing her of mismanaging the department and harming communities during her tenure.

However, Jeffries stressed that replacing Noem alone will not fix the deeper problems at the United States Department of Homeland Security. He argued that what’s needed is a major shift in policy, calling for bold and meaningful reforms to address immigration enforcement and accountability across the agency.

00:03You served with Mark Wayne Mullen in the House of Representatives.
00:06He's been in the Senate for a couple of years now.
00:09Somebody who's tied to the president.
00:11Is this an upgrade, in your opinion?
00:13Well, let's cross that bridge when we get to it, and we'll see what he has to say when and
00:17if there is...
00:19What was your impression of serving with him in the House?
00:21I don't have any comment right now on what's to come.
00:24Let's focus on what's taking place right now.
00:27Christy Noem is gone.
00:28Good riddance.
00:30She was a disaster, and House Democrats made something very clear several weeks ago.
00:37We said either Christy Noem is fired or she's going to be impeached.
00:42Does that change the ICE conversation?
00:44And Christy Noem has been fired, consistent with what we have demanded on behalf of the American people.
00:54But let me also make clear, a change in personnel is not sufficient.
01:00We need a change in policy.
01:03And that has to be bold, dramatic, transformational, and meaningful.
01:07And we've laid out 10 different demands standing on the side of the American people, including but not limited to
01:17judicial warrants, a ban on racial profiling, a prohibition on ICE targeting sensitive locations like schools, hospitals, polling sites, and
01:29houses of worship.
01:30A requirement that ICE agents are actually vetted through criminal background checks and actually trained the implementation of a prohibition
01:43on the excessive use of force, which we've seen horrifically been unleashed on the American people.
01:49And, of course, a requirement that ICE agents who break the law can be criminally investigated by state and local
02:00authorities.
02:01These are the type of policy changes that are going to be necessary to move us forward to ensure that
02:08ICE actually conducts itself like every other law enforcement agency in the country.
