GOD & COUNTRY looks at the implications of Christian Nationalism and how it distorts not only our constitutional republic, but Christianity itself. Featuring prominent Christian thought leaders, GOD & COUNTRY asks this question: What happens when a faith built on love, sacrifice, and forgiveness grows political tentacles, conflating power, money, and belief into hyper-nationalism?

00:05:23IN MY SOUL
00:05:36I was 16, 17 years old
00:05:39when I became a Christian.
00:05:40I wanted to be part of a group.
00:05:44I got pulled in
00:05:45by some friends
00:05:46into a youth ministry
00:05:47at an evangelical church.
00:05:49I grew up going to church
00:05:51dois, três vezes a week.
00:06:21a América e a cristianidade
00:06:23são como a baseball e a apple pie,
00:06:26e nós celebramos eles juntos.
00:06:29O que aconteceu em nosso país
00:06:30durante a couple de anos?
00:06:32Evangelismo foi marido com a política de ativismo,
00:06:34principalmente a política de ativismo,
00:06:36e agora, você pode dizer que
00:06:38isso éclipsou a origem da definição,
00:06:41e que evangelismo foi transformado
00:06:42em um movimento cultural e político
00:06:44que as pessoas estão agora dizendo
00:06:46é melhor describedido como cristian nationalism.
00:06:51Eu sou um cristian nationalist.
00:06:53Eu não tenho nada a ser afimado
00:06:54porque isso é o que a maioria dos americanos são.
00:06:57Nós orgulhamos de nossa fé.
00:07:01Cristian nationalism
00:07:02é basicamente a ideia
00:07:18pode dizer,
00:07:19nós apoiemos a liberdade de religião,
00:07:21nós apoiemos a verdade.
00:07:23Nós estamos levando a nossa autoridade,
00:07:25nós estamos levando a país
00:07:26que já é o nosso.
00:07:28E a Bíblia diz que nós estamos levando
00:07:30por força!
00:07:31Isso é o que a Bíblia diz!
00:07:34É não só exclusivamente
00:07:36para o Evangelista.
00:07:37Você vê a lot de Pentecostais envolvidos,
00:07:39você vê a lot de conservadores
00:07:40e Catholics envolvidos
00:07:41em cristian nationalism.
00:07:43Você tem pessoas que não vão para a igreja.
00:07:44É realmente uma identidade
00:07:46ligada a quem os americanos são
00:07:48e quem eles pensam que os americanos são.
00:07:51Deus te abençoe.
00:07:55Deus te abençoe.
00:07:55Deus te abençoe.
00:07:55Deus te abençoe.

00:08:08Deus te abençoe.
00:08:08Deus te abençoe.
00:08:09Deus te abençoe.
00:08:10Deus te abençoe.
00:08:10Eu acho que há muitas maneiras
00:08:11de lidar com a questão de cristian nationalism.
00:08:13Mas, na verdade, basicamente,
00:08:16é a belief que a América
00:08:18tem uma especial,
00:08:19God-ordaindo role
00:08:20em humanidade.
00:08:24Mas, aqui é a grande questão,
00:08:25e é uma grande questão
00:08:27para a América.
00:08:28se eu decidir
00:08:30que a América
00:08:31é irreplaceável
00:08:33em God's história,
00:08:35que a América
00:08:36que apenas a América
00:08:38pode tocar em God's história,
00:08:39e a democracia
00:08:41se derrubar,
00:08:42democracia tem que ir.
00:08:43para a América
00:08:54e a América
00:09:11para a América.
00:09:13para a América
00:09:23para a América

00:09:29e a América
00:09:29que a América
00:09:29tem que lembre

00:10:12So many conservative-leaning churches have been drawn into these networks
00:10:17where they are essentially being turned into partisan political cells.
00:10:21So what unites this movement is not any sort of distinct theology,
00:10:26but more like a common political vision.
00:10:29I try to be a servant of God.
00:10:31And, by the way, I'm about six weeks away from concluding my service as a state representative
00:10:36and perhaps moving into the Secretary of State role.
00:10:45God bless you. Thank you for listening to me.
00:10:47And let's go Brandon!
00:10:53Christian nationalism, I think, right now is probably the most powerful it has ever been.
00:10:58There's just so much going on under a lot of folks' radar that they're not even really aware of.
00:11:04God bless you guys.
00:11:07Hello, North Carolina!
00:11:12I love you so much, and I love this state.
00:11:15There are, today in America, 20 million more evangelical Christians we can mobilize and get to the polls.
00:11:23And we're going to do it.
00:11:24Christian nationalism in America is well-established, well-organized, and well-funded.
00:11:29And I want to stress that last statement especially.
00:11:32Well-funded.
00:11:34We're talking about organizations that have budgets that run sometimes in the tens of millions, hundreds of millions.
00:11:40Collectively, when you add it all up, you're probably talking about in excess of a billion dollars annually
00:11:44from these Christian nationalist organizations.
00:11:47We put voter guides in thousands of churches.
00:11:50You couldn't get away from us.
00:11:52We were in your text message.
00:11:54We were calling you.
00:11:55We were at the door.
00:11:56We were in your church.
00:11:57And you know what?
00:11:58We didn't stop until you voted.
00:12:00And I don't want to scare anybody here, but we had 147 different data points that we tracked on every
00:12:07one of those voters.
00:12:09Everything from where they live to their voting history to various consumer background on those folks,
00:12:16like what magazines they read, what TV they watched, what kind of car they owned, whether or not they owned
00:12:22a gun.
00:12:23If you were one of these 1.8 million after we contacted you like that, 84% of those people
00:12:30voted a 9% increase in turnout.
00:12:33And they are the reason why North Carolina went red, and they're the reason why it's going to stay red.
00:12:41These really powerful national organizations are driving the agenda.
00:12:48This feminist movement that's infected the minds of young women across the country.
00:12:53Christian nationalists don't like feminism.
00:12:55They want to roll that back.
00:12:57They are appalled at the idea of LGBTQ rights.
00:13:00They want to roll those back.
00:13:01They do not like legal abortion.
00:13:04They want to end that in all 50 states.
00:13:06They do not like the idea that we have a secular public school system.
00:13:10I frankly don't think the Department of Education should exist.
00:13:14They think public schools ought to either be Christianized,
00:13:16or they would move to a system of private schools funded through vouchers.
00:13:21There's a wave of censorship.
00:13:23Critical race theory is state-sponsored racism, and it should be opposed in every school in our land.
00:13:30They don't like that there's material in public libraries that they consider offensive or unbiblical.
00:13:41Christian nationalist ideas are not very popular in the political sphere.
00:13:46So, majorities of people want to protect a woman's right to choose.
00:13:52Majorities of people want gay people to be able to marry.
00:13:55But what's happening is, if white Christian nationalists can't win the popularity battle,
00:14:03can't win the majority of voters, what they're going to do is use the levers of democracy
00:14:10to enshrine minority rule, so that even if they're not a majority in our democracy, in our voting,
00:14:19they can still get their way.
00:14:22This is a movement that represents a minority of the population,
00:14:25but they have disproportionate influence in our politics,
00:14:29precisely because they've got this infrastructure
00:14:32that serves to turn out the vote in disproportionate numbers.
00:14:37In a country where 40 to 50 percent of people don't vote,
00:14:41you don't need a majority to dominate an election cycle.
00:14:45All you need is a disproportionately activated and motivated and organized minority.
00:14:51Out to the place right now, if you vote Democrat,
00:14:53I don't even want you around this church.
00:14:54You can get out.
00:14:55You can get out, you demon.
00:14:58You can get out, you baby butchering election thief.
00:15:02Since there's no prospect that we're going to do anything about gerrymandering,
00:15:06and the Senate is created in such a way
00:15:09as to give massive disproportionate power to rural areas,
00:15:14I think that we are on the precipice
00:15:17of not just having minority rule, but having radical minority rule,
00:15:21by which I mean not only is the minority more radical,
00:15:24but a smaller portion of the electorate will have greater clout.
00:15:28We Christians are standing up,
00:15:31and we are going to impose Christian rule in this country.
00:15:36As a white evangelical, I find that to be a very scary thing,
00:15:39and yet it's happening all across our country.
00:15:47So many Christians are confused by what they're seeing,
00:15:51and they're concerned about the decaying culture,
00:15:53and they're wondering, what are we supposed to do?
00:15:57Ladies and gentlemen, we cannot be silent any longer.
00:16:04The Joe Biden administration is the most evil presidential administration
00:16:10in the history of the United States of America.
00:16:13It's time for Christians to stand up, to push back, to speak out.
00:16:18That is the responsibility of God's people.
00:16:25Socially conservative Christians who oppose abortion
00:16:29and who believe in a traditional understanding of family,
00:16:32that is not, in and of itself, Christian nationalism.
00:16:35For instance, most conservative Christians
00:16:39who are deeply concerned about abortion
00:16:42are because they care about vulnerable human beings.
00:16:46One can agree or disagree with that,
00:16:48but that is an impulse that is rooted in something
00:16:51that I think most people would believe to be good and healthy
00:16:55for a functioning society.
00:16:57That's not the case if what is happening
00:17:00is a valorization of power itself.
00:17:06Whereas we, the church,
00:17:09are God's governing body on the earth,
00:17:12whereas we have been given legal power from heaven
00:17:17and now exercise our authority.
00:17:22I mean, there are people who are quite open
00:17:25about saying that they, yes,
00:17:27they would like to be a theocracy.
00:17:28Yes, they are, you know, post-liberal.
00:17:30This country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles.
00:17:35They don't believe in a multicultural liberal democracy
00:17:39in which you have a variety of lifestyles.
00:17:42They actually say, screw that.
00:17:44This is our turn to impose our values
00:17:47on the rest of the country.
00:17:48This is not a movement about Christian values.
00:17:50This is a movement about Christian power.
00:17:53Raw rank power.
00:17:56We decree that the blood of Jesus
00:17:59covers and protects our nation.
00:18:02What happens to atheists in this society?
00:18:04What happens to secular people?
00:18:05What happens to the people
00:18:06who don't believe this stuff?
00:18:08We decree that America shall be saved!
00:18:15So I think that where we're going
00:18:17is a very dangerous place.
00:18:19I think we are about to find out
00:18:21how big a threat it is.
00:18:23God wants America to be saved.
00:18:27And we're calling for new politicians to rise up,
00:18:31new school board members, new legislators.
00:18:35It's very easy to see this
00:18:37as something that is outside of government.
00:18:41It's not in power.
00:18:43That could all change very quickly.
00:18:44Our definition of what would never happen
00:18:47keeps getting pushed out
00:18:49into more extreme places.
00:18:51USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!
00:18:57The thing that keeps me up at night
00:18:59is that we lose democracy
00:19:00and that this country slides
00:19:01into a theocratic nation.
00:19:03Does that seem possible?
00:19:06Yes.
00:19:07It's possible.
00:19:09It's absolutely possible.
00:19:10We're closer to it now
00:19:12than we ever have been before.
00:19:13America is on a precipice
00:19:15and I personally don't know
00:19:19if we're going to stop ourselves
00:19:21from going over the other side.
00:19:27Is Christian nationalism Christian?
00:19:31Is Christian nationalism Christian?
00:19:33Isn't that cool?
00:19:35That's a great question.
00:19:36Um, no, it isn't.
00:19:39It's not biblical.
00:19:40It's not Christianity.
00:19:41It's a perversion
00:19:42of the Christian message.
00:19:45Being a Christian
00:19:46is about the values of inclusion,
00:19:51working for the needs
00:19:52of the marginalized,
00:19:54peace building.
00:19:57Christian nationalism
00:19:58is certainly not based
00:19:59on the values of the gospel.
00:20:02Our ethos says,
00:20:04love your enemies.
00:20:04Our ethos says,
00:20:05bless those who persecute you.
00:20:07Our ethos is act justly,
00:20:09love kindness,
00:20:10walk humbly.
00:20:11This should be our time.
00:20:13We should be blazing forth
00:20:14as a countercultural example.
00:20:16And instead,
00:20:16we're leading the charge often
00:20:18of malice and cruelty
00:20:21and division and partisanship.
00:20:23And that is grievous.
00:20:25There's no way
00:20:26you can look at Jesus
00:20:27in the gospel
00:20:28and put him on the side
00:20:30of greed,
00:20:31on the side of injustice,
00:20:33on the side of wrong.
00:20:34and oftentimes
00:20:35what you end up with
00:20:37is people who are so loud
00:20:41about what God says
00:20:42so little about
00:20:43and so quiet about
00:20:45what God says
00:20:46so much about.
00:20:48So they're so loud
00:20:50against gay people.
00:20:52They're so loud
00:20:53against a woman's right
00:20:55to have an abortion.
00:20:56They're so loud
00:20:58in cutting taxes
00:20:59for the wealthy.
00:21:00They're so loud
00:21:01when it comes to guns.
00:21:05They're so loud
00:21:06on those things.
00:21:07But they're so quiet
00:21:08on how do we end poverty?
00:21:12How do we care
00:21:13for the least of these?
00:21:16You're in essence
00:21:17being loud
00:21:18about what God says
00:21:19so little.
00:21:21And you're being
00:21:22far too quiet
00:21:23about what God says
00:21:24so much about.
00:21:37I view the United States
00:21:38and its government
00:21:39under the values of God.
00:21:41God's law first.
00:21:43I believe that we were
00:21:44founded as a Christian nation.
00:21:46I believe that we should
00:21:46be a Christian nation.
00:21:47It's literally
00:21:48in our constitution.
00:21:49We are a Christian nation.
00:21:51Our entire founding
00:21:52is based on those
00:21:53of Christian values.
00:21:56I do not believe
00:21:57in the separation
00:21:58of church and state.
00:21:59You cannot take God
00:22:01out of anything.
00:22:03We're one nation
00:22:04under God.
00:22:05And if we can't be
00:22:06a Christian nation
00:22:07the light into the world
00:22:08then the evil will reign.
00:22:11Darkness will reign.
00:22:15One of the things
00:22:16that I kind of specialize in
00:22:17is the myths
00:22:18and disinformation
00:22:20that make up
00:22:22the Christian nationalist
00:22:23identity.
00:22:24It's things like
00:22:25the founding fathers
00:22:26prayed at the
00:22:26Constitutional Convention
00:22:27and that our laws
00:22:28are based on
00:22:29the Ten Commandments
00:22:30and that George Washington
00:22:31knelt in the snow
00:22:31at Valley Forge
00:22:32and prayed.
00:22:33None of that is true
00:22:34but it's accepted gospel
00:22:36and these are the
00:22:37talking points
00:22:38and the dog whistles
00:22:39that Christian nationalists
00:22:40can use to communicate
00:22:41with each other.
00:22:44If we are going to have
00:22:45one nation under God
00:22:46which we must
00:22:47we have to have
00:22:48one religion
00:22:49one nation under God
00:22:50and one religion under God.
00:22:53Christian nationalists say
00:22:54we really were founded
00:22:56as a Christian nation
00:22:56because in God we trust
00:22:58because so help me God
00:22:59because we have
00:23:00a national day of prayer.
00:23:02But actually
00:23:03we've seen waves
00:23:04of Christian nationalism
00:23:06throughout American history.
00:23:10In the 1950s
00:23:11we had under God
00:23:12added to the pledge
00:23:13in God we trust
00:23:14adopted as the motto.
00:23:17a prayer room
00:23:18put in the capitol
00:23:20a national day of prayer
00:23:22imposed
00:23:23during the civil war
00:23:24we saw
00:23:25in God we trust
00:23:26added to our coins
00:23:28and all of these artifacts
00:23:30then become ways
00:23:33to justify future
00:23:35waves of Christian nationalism.
00:23:38We have to think
00:23:39of ourselves
00:23:40as pilgrims.
00:23:42It was their children
00:23:44and their children's children
00:23:46that gave birth
00:23:47to America.
00:23:49When the pilgrims
00:23:50and the Puritans
00:23:51came over
00:23:51they established
00:23:52their tiny little theocracies
00:23:54and suffocated
00:23:55everybody's religious freedom
00:23:56you have to believe
00:23:57you have to act like this
00:23:59they imposed
00:24:01theocratic law
00:24:03and were essentially
00:24:04failed societies.
00:24:07And when the founders
00:24:08got together
00:24:08and were looking at
00:24:09how are we going to create
00:24:10the U.S. Constitution
00:24:11they looked back at that
00:24:12and they said
00:24:13we are
00:24:14we don't want any part of that
00:24:15that's the wrong way
00:24:16to do things.
00:24:16The church
00:24:18is supposed
00:24:19to direct
00:24:20the government
00:24:21the government
00:24:21is not supposed
00:24:23to direct
00:24:23the church
00:24:24that is not
00:24:25how our founding fathers
00:24:26intended it
00:24:27and I'm tired
00:24:28of this separation
00:24:29of church and state junk
00:24:30that's not in the Constitution
00:24:31it was in a stinking letter
00:24:33and it means nothing
00:24:34like what they say
00:24:35it does.
00:24:44If you look
00:24:45at the Constitution
00:24:46the really unique
00:24:48contributions
00:24:48are secular
00:24:49the founders
00:24:51when they were writing
00:24:52the Constitution
00:24:53in Philadelphia
00:24:53they didn't invoke
00:24:55the Bible
00:24:56they didn't turn
00:24:57to religious principles
00:24:58and we know this
00:25:00because we have the records
00:25:01it's very very clear
00:25:02it was secular
00:25:03by design
00:25:04by choice
00:25:04in fact that actually
00:25:05pissed people off
00:25:06at the time
00:25:07it begins
00:25:08we the people
00:25:10our Constitution
00:25:11was the first
00:25:11to do that
00:25:12it was the first
00:25:12to draw power
00:25:13from the people
00:25:14and not a deity
00:25:15no other country
00:25:16had done that before
00:25:17it was the first
00:25:18in the history
00:25:19of the world
00:25:20to ban religious tests
00:25:21for public office
00:25:22and it did so
00:25:24in language
00:25:24that was very clear
00:25:26and emphatic
00:25:27it says
00:25:27no religious test
00:25:29shall ever be required
00:25:30of any office
00:25:31or public trust
00:25:32under the United States
00:25:34and even all of that
00:25:36was not enough
00:25:37for the founders
00:25:37so that's just
00:25:38the original document
00:25:39then later on
00:25:39they came along
00:25:40and said
00:25:40we're actually
00:25:40going to amend this
00:25:41and we're going to
00:25:42add in more protections
00:25:44and so then you get
00:25:45the first amendment
00:25:45Congress shall make
00:25:46no law respecting
00:25:48an establishment
00:25:48of religion
00:25:49or prohibiting
00:25:50the free exercise
00:25:51thereof
00:25:53and in that
00:25:54you have
00:25:55the founders
00:25:56separating
00:25:56state and church
00:25:58in an effort
00:25:59partly to protect
00:26:00religious freedom
00:26:01they understood
00:26:02that there's
00:26:03really
00:26:03it's impossible
00:26:05to have true
00:26:06religious freedom
00:26:07without a secular
00:26:08government
00:26:08there is no freedom
00:26:09of religion
00:26:10without a government
00:26:10that is free
00:26:11from religion
00:26:14is the United States
00:26:15a Christian nation
00:26:16in the sense
00:26:17that we have
00:26:17a lot of Christians
00:26:18here?
00:26:18Sure
00:26:18is the United States
00:26:20a Christian nation
00:26:21in the sense
00:26:22that Christianity
00:26:23influenced our culture?
00:26:24Sure
00:26:24was the United States
00:26:26our government
00:26:28our constitution
00:26:28our laws
00:26:29founded on
00:26:30Christian
00:26:31or Judeo-Christian
00:26:32principles
00:26:33the answer to that
00:26:34is no
00:26:35absolutely not
00:26:54through different
00:26:55eras of the U.S.
00:26:56around times
00:26:57of social upheaval
00:26:58when we're trying
00:26:59to figure out
00:27:00who are we
00:27:00what are we about
00:27:01we see that
00:27:03Christian nationalism
00:27:04is going to tell
00:27:05religiously
00:27:05politically
00:27:06conservative Americans
00:27:07we need to return
00:27:08to these moral roots
00:27:10to be the greatest
00:27:11country in the world
00:27:12again
00:27:12and if we don't
00:27:13we're going to
00:27:15fall away
00:27:23we pray for some young people
00:27:25who are caught up
00:27:25in the things
00:27:26of the world
00:27:26hooked on drugs
00:27:27and liquor
00:27:28and sin
00:27:29and immorality
00:27:30help us today
00:27:31to get the message
00:27:32of God's love
00:27:34so clearly
00:27:35to them
00:27:35in the 1970s
00:27:37preachers like
00:27:38Jerry Falwell
00:27:38began arguing
00:27:40that the answer
00:27:40to the problems
00:27:41we're having
00:27:41in society
00:27:42what they consider
00:27:43to be problems
00:27:43could be found
00:27:45through politics
00:27:46thousands of ladies
00:27:48were marching
00:27:48in Los Angeles
00:27:49and New York
00:27:50for their rights
00:27:52ERA
00:27:54all the rights
00:27:55any dear lady
00:27:56needs
00:27:57is the right
00:27:58to be married
00:27:59to a godly husband
00:28:00who is under
00:28:01the lordship
00:28:02of Jesus Christ
00:28:03Jerry Falwell
00:28:04is a pastor
00:28:06at Thomas Road
00:28:07Baptist Church
00:28:08a church in Virginia
00:28:09he's on the radio
00:28:11and he's on television
00:28:12he's reaching
00:28:13and influencing
00:28:14conservative Christians
00:28:15across the country
00:28:17and so he founds
00:28:19the moral majority
00:28:19it's a political
00:28:21action committee
00:28:21registered as such
00:28:23just like those
00:28:23of labor unions
00:28:24or any other organization
00:28:25and he ends up
00:28:28really playing
00:28:29a critical role
00:28:30in binding together
00:28:32conservative Christianity
00:28:34with this
00:28:35kind of newly
00:28:36crystallized
00:28:38political vision
00:28:39particularly around
00:28:41the issue of abortion
00:28:42abortion is a moral issue
00:28:45it is a theological issue
00:28:46it is a human rights issue
00:28:49an issue that concerns
00:28:50the human rights
00:28:51of unborn babies
00:28:52who by the hundreds
00:28:54of thousands
00:28:55are being murdered
00:28:57from the perspective
00:28:59of the 21st century
00:29:00when we look at
00:29:01the religious right
00:29:03as a political block
00:29:04it looks like
00:29:05they mobilized
00:29:07around the issue
00:29:08of abortion
00:29:08and overturning
00:29:10Roe v. Wade
00:29:12when you look
00:29:12at the historical record
00:29:14however
00:29:15when Roe v. Wade
00:29:16first passed
00:29:17in 1973
00:29:18white evangelicals
00:29:19had a mix of responses
00:29:22basically a lot
00:29:23of the responses
00:29:23were
00:29:24it's the law
00:29:24of the land
00:29:25follow the law
00:29:27a lot of people
00:29:28think the movement
00:29:29was born
00:29:30in response
00:29:31to Roe v. Wade
00:29:32because movement leaders
00:29:33want them to think that
00:29:35and have promoted
00:29:36this idea
00:29:37but the reality
00:29:38is a lot more complicated
00:29:39and frankly
00:29:40a lot uglier
00:29:43what really catalyzed
00:29:45the religious right
00:29:46in the early
00:29:47to mid 1970s
00:29:49was the so-called
00:29:52right of private
00:29:53Christian schools
00:29:54to maintain
00:29:55racially segregated
00:29:57institutions
00:29:57Roe v. Wade
00:29:59became a convenient
00:30:02chosen wedge issue
00:30:04but really
00:30:06modern Christian nationalism
00:30:08was born
00:30:08out of the fight
00:30:10to desegregate schools
00:30:14did you like it
00:30:15at school today
00:30:16yeah
00:30:17what difference
00:30:18was there
00:30:18in going to
00:30:20Hoffman Boston school
00:30:22well school
00:30:23was bigger
00:30:24it used to get lost
00:30:26then
00:30:26did you feel
00:30:27as if you're
00:30:28going to like it there
00:30:29yeah
00:30:33Brown v. Board
00:30:34legislating
00:30:35that schools
00:30:36had to desegregate
00:30:36was passed
00:30:37in 1954
00:30:38and many people
00:30:40were up in arms
00:30:43regardless of what
00:30:44they've decided
00:30:45we will have
00:30:46segregated schools
00:30:48and are you going
00:30:49back to school
00:30:50no sir
00:30:50and why did you
00:30:51come out of school
00:30:52because I'm not
00:30:52going to school
00:30:53with n****
00:30:53uh-huh
00:30:54and do you feel
00:30:55that the majority
00:30:56agree with you
00:30:57or with the
00:30:58the majority
00:30:59of people here
00:31:00in Arkansas
00:31:00agree with me
00:31:01uh-huh
00:31:02well what are you
00:31:02going to do
00:31:02for an education
00:31:03well St. Mary's
00:31:04isn't integrated
00:31:05we can go there
00:31:06we can go to
00:31:07a private school
00:31:09many Christians
00:31:11and Evangelicals
00:31:12in particular
00:31:13thought they
00:31:14could keep
00:31:14religious schools
00:31:15segregated
00:31:16and not have
00:31:17to listen
00:31:17to the government
00:31:21one particular
00:31:23example
00:31:23is with
00:31:24Bob Jones University
00:31:25Bob Jones University
00:31:27was started
00:31:28by Bob Jones Senior
00:31:29he was this
00:31:31famous preacher
00:31:32and evangelist
00:31:33and segregationist
00:31:37so Bob Jones University
00:31:38was a segregated school
00:31:41didn't allow black
00:31:42people at all
00:31:44then you get a series
00:31:45of court cases
00:31:46in the 1970s
00:31:47where the federal
00:31:49government said
00:31:50no you can't do that
00:31:51that's a violation
00:31:52of constitutional rights
00:31:54it's a violation
00:31:55of civil rights
00:31:56and if you maintain
00:31:57this stance
00:31:59on racial segregation
00:32:00you will lose
00:32:01your tax exempt status
00:32:03you lose your tax exempt
00:32:05status
00:32:05which means
00:32:05you have to pay
00:32:06more money
00:32:07and it was the
00:32:08combination of those
00:32:09two
00:32:09race and money
00:32:11that got many church
00:32:12leaders
00:32:13into politics
00:32:14it's time for God's people
00:32:17to come out of the closet
00:32:18out of the churches
00:32:19and change America
00:32:21we must do it
00:32:27this is what pulled the
00:32:28religious right together
00:32:29it was essentially saying
00:32:31if the federal government
00:32:32is going to tell us
00:32:33how we can run
00:32:34our private
00:32:35essentially segregation
00:32:36academies
00:32:37we need to be afraid
00:32:38that they could come
00:32:39after us
00:32:40in any other sphere
00:32:41of life
00:32:42and so it was really
00:32:43around race
00:32:44that we see
00:32:45the religious right
00:32:46pull together
00:32:48the new right leaders
00:32:50were looking for an issue
00:32:51to organize
00:32:53stop the tax on segregation
00:32:55this wasn't going to be
00:32:56an effective rallying cry
00:32:57for their new movement
00:32:58it was just so ugly
00:33:01so they looked at things
00:33:02like school prayer
00:33:03the women's movement
00:33:04communism
00:33:05and the gay rights movement
00:33:07but abortion
00:33:08turned out to be
00:33:10a great issue for them
00:33:11because they were able
00:33:12to unite disparate elements
00:33:14of the rank and file
00:33:15the bible doesn't say
00:33:16a word about abortion
00:33:19for me as a catholic sister
00:33:22I think it should not be
00:33:25in the public square
00:33:26but it has been
00:33:27an effective political
00:33:30way of raising money
00:33:31and controlling an electorate
00:33:34how many of our christians
00:33:36have what I call
00:33:38the goo goo syndrome
00:33:39good government
00:33:40they want everybody to vote
00:33:44I don't want everybody to vote
00:33:46elections are not won
00:33:48by a majority of people
00:33:49they never have been
00:33:50from the beginning
00:33:51of our country
00:33:52and they are not now
00:33:53as a matter of fact
00:33:54our leverage in the elections
00:33:55quite candidly goes up
00:33:57as the voting populace
00:33:58goes down
00:34:00behind the scenes
00:34:01there were people
00:34:01like Paul Weirich
00:34:02conservative strategist
00:34:04who were looking to take
00:34:05the kind of
00:34:06small government
00:34:07low tax
00:34:09libertarian wing
00:34:10of the republican party
00:34:11and juice it up
00:34:12with conservative evangelicals
00:34:15whose main concern
00:34:16was social issues
00:34:17I call again on congress
00:34:20to pass a constitutional amendment
00:34:22restoring voluntary prayer
00:34:25to our classrooms
00:34:27it was a coalition
00:34:29it was coalition politics
00:34:30and you had your chamber
00:34:31of commerce conservatives
00:34:33you had your neoconservatives
00:34:34you had people who were
00:34:35focused on foreign policy
00:34:37the Reagan conservatives
00:34:38and then you had
00:34:39the moral majority
00:34:40Christian right
00:34:41and they were
00:34:42an important and valuable
00:34:43part of this coalition
00:34:45but they were not
00:34:46the dominant part
00:34:47of the coalition
00:34:48in terms of the abortion issue
00:34:50I am pro-life
00:34:51but no question
00:34:52that we ought to ban
00:34:53partial birth abortions
00:34:54in America today
00:34:55and no question
00:34:57in retrospect
00:34:58I think part of the problem
00:34:59was there was this culture
00:35:01of republicans
00:35:02who over promised
00:35:03and then under delivered
00:35:08by the early years
00:35:09of the 21st century
00:35:10a lot of conservative
00:35:12Christians had this sense
00:35:14that the politicians
00:35:15weren't really coming through
00:35:16for them
00:35:17they believed
00:35:18that they were owed more
00:35:20you were crushed
00:35:21and you see that
00:35:22in the Tea Party movement
00:35:23this kind of insurgency
00:35:25the idea that
00:35:27you know
00:35:27democrats and republicans
00:35:29aren't all that different
00:35:30and you can't really
00:35:32trust them
00:35:32my kingdom come
00:35:34you have to take
00:35:35the power back
00:35:36my will be done
00:35:37and give the power
00:35:38to the people
00:35:39and then force your agenda
00:35:50evangelicals said
00:35:51with 40 years
00:35:53we tried to get this done
00:35:54the nice way
00:35:55and we're not going
00:35:56to do that any longer
00:36:00it's no more
00:36:02Mr. Nice Guy
00:36:03it's now time for us
00:36:04to really start to fight
00:36:09ladies and gentlemen
00:36:11thank you
00:36:13I am officially running
00:36:18for president
00:36:19of the United States
00:36:21and we are going to make
00:36:24our country great again
00:36:30when I was a young
00:36:31evangelical minister
00:36:32we used Donald Trump
00:36:35as a sermon illustration
00:36:37for everything
00:36:38a Christian should not be
00:36:40we're going to protect
00:36:42Christianity
00:36:43two Corinthians right
00:36:46initially among church
00:36:48going evangelicals
00:36:49Trump's support
00:36:50was not very strong
00:36:51many Christians
00:36:53saw Trump
00:36:54as deeply flawed
00:36:56you know
00:36:57I'm a true believer
00:36:58is everybody
00:36:59a true believer
00:37:00in this room
00:37:03Christianity
00:37:04is under tremendous siege
00:37:06but you know
00:37:07the fact is
00:37:08that there's nothing
00:37:09the politicians
00:37:10can do to you
00:37:11if you band together
00:37:12you have too much power
00:37:13but the Christians
00:37:14don't use their power
00:37:16they don't need your
00:37:17they don't use your power
00:37:18and honestly
00:37:20you have
00:37:20by far
00:37:21it's the strongest
00:37:22I mean you talk
00:37:22about lobbies
00:37:23you have the strongest
00:37:24lobby ever
00:37:25but I never hear
00:37:26about a Christian lobby
00:37:27thank you everybody
00:37:31before the 2016 election
00:37:33he invited
00:37:34evangelical leaders
00:37:35to come to New York
00:37:38and I was invited
00:37:39I declined
00:37:40but a lot of my friends
00:37:42were there
00:37:44and the reports
00:37:46I got out
00:37:47by text
00:37:48you know
00:37:48people who were
00:37:49literally texting me
00:37:50in real time
00:37:50from the meeting
00:37:51saying
00:37:52this is our guy
00:37:53this is the guy
00:37:55who's going to get it done
00:37:56we may not like him
00:37:59but it looks like
00:38:00he's God's man
00:38:01Donald Trump today
00:38:03came and had a conversation
00:38:04now we don't agree
00:38:05on everything
00:38:06but one thing he did
00:38:08he acknowledged
00:38:09the concerns
00:38:10that evangelicals have
00:38:11and he affirmed
00:38:12those concerns
00:38:13and he has said
00:38:14it won't happen
00:38:15when I'm president
00:38:17when Trump gave a list
00:38:19of potential
00:38:19supreme court nominees
00:38:21that was reassuring
00:38:24to many evangelical leaders
00:38:27who are deeply concerned
00:38:28about abortion
00:38:29they started to believe
00:38:32that they would have
00:38:33influence
00:38:34in a trump white house
00:38:36appointing a supreme court justice
00:38:38that would overturn Roe v. Wade
00:38:40do I have it?
00:38:41I will appoint judges
00:38:42that will be pro-life
00:38:44by the time I got
00:38:46to the Republican National Convention
00:38:48in Cleveland
00:38:49when Trump would be declared
00:38:52the official RNC candidate
00:38:54for president
00:38:55my colleagues were telling me
00:38:57that he was ordained
00:39:00by God
00:39:01to lead the country
00:39:03that was a far cry
00:39:05from the sermon illustration
00:39:08we used to use
00:39:09but it spoke to how much
00:39:12American evangelicals
00:39:14had really abandoned
00:39:15our core principles
00:39:19and really made an exchange
00:39:22we were now all about
00:39:24exercising political power
00:39:27friends
00:39:29delegates
00:39:31and fellow Americans
00:39:34I humbly
00:39:36and gratefully
00:39:38accept
00:39:38your nomination
00:39:40for the presidency
00:39:42of the United States
00:40:05in 2016
00:40:06we looked at the exit polls
00:40:08and it came back
00:40:10that 81%
00:40:12of white evangelicals
00:40:13pulled the lever
00:40:14for Donald Trump
00:40:17that was a record
00:40:20that's more white evangelicals
00:40:22than voted for George W. Bush
00:40:24who was a white evangelical
00:40:26he could not have been elected
00:40:28without 81%
00:40:29of white evangelical support
00:40:30he might not have been elected
00:40:32at 80%
00:40:33he needed to squeeze
00:40:34every last drop
00:40:36out of the evangelical base
00:40:38and he did
00:40:41Donald Trump
00:40:42fits all the marks
00:40:43of a televangelist
00:40:45right down to the crazy hair
00:40:48he's this larger than life ego
00:40:50who promises you the world
00:40:52no one can fix it but me
00:40:54I can solve all the problems
00:40:55I'll drain the swamp
00:40:56I'll build the wall
00:40:58and he flies around
00:40:59in a private jet
00:41:00he's got gilded toilets
00:41:02and everything else
00:41:03he is a televangelist
00:41:05but instead of preaching gospel
00:41:07he's preaching Christian nationalism
00:41:09he's preaching this
00:41:10America first
00:41:11make America great again gospel
00:41:13which a lot of people
00:41:14were ready to hear
00:41:15as a Christian
00:41:17I was surprised
00:41:18to see so many Christians
00:41:20just fall in line
00:41:22behind
00:41:22a man who
00:41:24has had multiple affairs
00:41:26who will cheat
00:41:27and lie
00:41:28and steal
00:41:29to get his way
00:41:30he is the sort of
00:41:32incarnation
00:41:32of the seven deadly sins
00:41:34he is about as
00:41:35you know
00:41:36far from
00:41:37Jesus
00:41:39as a person
00:41:40could possibly be
00:41:45and yet
00:41:4681% of white evangelicals
00:41:49voted for him
00:41:51you cannot forget
00:41:52the white part
00:41:55we are moving
00:41:56very rapidly
00:41:57towards becoming
00:41:58the very first nation state
00:41:59in the world
00:42:00to be majority minorities
00:42:03and that
00:42:04for a lot of people
00:42:04is a cause for celebration
00:42:06as it should be
00:42:07it's truly extraordinary
00:42:09when you think about it
00:42:10but for others
00:42:12scares the shit out of them
00:42:14get the hell out of my country
00:42:18my country
00:42:19the more that Americans
00:42:21embrace Christian nationalism
00:42:22we find over and over
00:42:24that they're much more likely
00:42:26to hold racist values
00:42:27and beliefs
00:42:31in our survey research
00:42:32we find that
00:42:34they're more uncomfortable
00:42:35with racial integration
00:42:37and more likely to view
00:42:39racial minorities
00:42:40as somehow less American
00:42:43when they see and believe
00:42:45and think about
00:42:46who the ideal American is
00:42:47they really do envision
00:42:49a white America
00:42:51I did not grow up a Christian
00:42:54but I became a Christian
00:42:55in high school
00:42:56in a white evangelical context
00:42:59and so there's always been
00:43:01these questions
00:43:01around race
00:43:03and religion
00:43:04for me
00:43:05I am in
00:43:07white evangelical spaces
00:43:08I'm in their seminaries
00:43:10I'm in their churches
00:43:11I'm in their denominations
00:43:12I'm trying to be part of
00:43:16moving the ball forward
00:43:17on these issues
00:43:18only to turn around
00:43:20and see those election results
00:43:23what that 81% number said
00:43:26was
00:43:26all of my concerns
00:43:29all of the issues
00:43:31that are pertinent to me
00:43:32because of our racialized society
00:43:35those fell on deaf ears
00:43:37it really
00:43:39didn't matter much
00:43:40when it came
00:43:41to actually
00:43:42pulling the lever
00:43:44to vote for someone
00:43:45it was
00:43:47completely
00:43:47confounding to me
00:43:49that
00:43:50other Christians
00:43:51would proudly
00:43:52support
00:43:53a man who
00:43:54plays on racist
00:43:55tropes
00:43:56that
00:43:58this man
00:43:59would be their champion
00:44:03and it felt
00:44:04like a betrayal
00:44:12around 2018
00:44:132019
00:44:14I'm sitting in church
00:44:15you know
00:44:15we'd have about
00:44:16a half hour time
00:44:17between Sunday morning
00:44:18worship and Sunday school
00:44:19and this sweetest lady
00:44:21the sweetest lady
00:44:22comes up
00:44:22and she's like
00:44:23David
00:44:24why don't you
00:44:25like our president
00:44:27and
00:44:28there are a lot of things
00:44:29but I
00:44:30sometimes
00:44:31especially when I was
00:44:32talking with somebody
00:44:32who I knew
00:44:33wasn't that engaged
00:44:34in politics
00:44:35I would just say
00:44:36one or two things
00:44:37and I'd say
00:44:37you know
00:44:37I just wish
00:44:39our presidents lied less
00:44:42and she looked at me
00:44:43and she said
00:44:44Donald Trump
00:44:46lies
00:44:48you know
00:44:49at that point
00:44:50what do you say
00:44:53she was so immersed
00:44:55in that cocoon
00:44:55she couldn't see
00:44:56the man for who he was
00:45:00and
00:45:01you know
00:45:02all kinds of people
00:45:03asked me to explain
00:45:04MAGA
00:45:04Christianity
00:45:06and I've said
00:45:07to a lot of folks
00:45:08if you were
00:45:09immersed in the world
00:45:10they're immersed in
00:45:11you'd be wearing
00:45:12the red hat
00:45:13also
00:45:16I grew up
00:45:17as a Christian
00:45:18I
00:45:19attended a Christian
00:45:21school
00:45:21all through childhood
00:45:23and
00:45:24it was
00:45:25fairly isolated
00:45:26from popular culture
00:45:28I mean
00:45:29I grew up
00:45:30only listening
00:45:31to Christian music
00:45:32I thought
00:45:33that secular music
00:45:34was sinful
00:45:38I'm still
00:45:39pretty
00:45:40ignorant
00:45:41of a whole lot
00:45:42of popular culture
00:45:43anything that went down
00:45:44in the 1980s
00:45:45and 1990s
00:45:46there's a good chance
00:45:47that I missed it
00:45:50it was possible
00:45:51to be
00:45:52almost completely
00:45:53immersed
00:45:54in this separate
00:45:55Christian subculture
00:46:01Christian media
00:46:02is
00:46:03a massive
00:46:04industry
00:46:05that is
00:46:06almost completely
00:46:07invisible
00:46:07to
00:46:08most Americans
00:46:10TBN
00:46:12biggest Christian
00:46:13TV network
00:46:14is one of the
00:46:15largest station groups
00:46:16in the world
00:46:17in terms of
00:46:17number of stations
00:46:18Salem
00:46:19and Caleb
00:46:20are among the
00:46:22largest radio station
00:46:23groups
00:46:23in the world
00:46:24if you are
00:46:25a good church
00:46:26going Christian
00:46:27and you go
00:46:27twice a month
00:46:28that means
00:46:28you're maybe
00:46:29hearing
00:46:2930 to 60 minutes
00:46:31of Bible teaching
00:46:32from your local
00:46:32church
00:46:33a month
00:46:34but you're
00:46:35probably marinating
00:46:36in hours
00:46:37and hours
00:46:38and hours
00:46:38of Christian radio
00:46:40Christian television
00:46:41Christian websites
00:46:42and podcasts
00:46:44that's what's
00:46:45shaping a lot
00:46:45of people's faith
00:46:47very little of it
00:46:48is explicitly
00:46:49political
00:46:50but it
00:46:51shapes a community
00:46:52it shapes
00:46:53a sense of
00:46:54identity
00:46:54and
00:46:55and
00:46:55when it does
00:46:56turn political
00:46:57it is
00:46:59according to
00:47:00one
00:47:01playbook
00:47:02it is a
00:47:03conservative
00:47:04republican
00:47:04agenda
00:47:05I'm Alex Clark
00:47:07and this
00:47:08is Poplitics
00:47:10if your state
00:47:11decides to make
00:47:11abortion illegal
00:47:12these mega
00:47:13corporations
00:47:13want to help
00:47:14you kill
00:47:15your baby
00:47:15anyways
00:47:16yeah this
00:47:16sounds like
00:47:17a work trip
00:47:17from hell
00:47:18the expense
00:47:18report would
00:47:19literally read
00:47:19work coffee
00:47:20work lunch
00:47:21murder
00:47:22so evil
00:47:23to borrow
00:47:23a term
00:47:24you know
00:47:24you'll hear
00:47:25in a lot
00:47:25of churches
00:47:25they're discipling
00:47:27Americans
00:47:27to see the world
00:47:28in a particular
00:47:29way
00:47:29they're helping
00:47:30them say
00:47:31hey this is
00:47:32what happened
00:47:33and this is
00:47:33how you can
00:47:34interpret
00:47:34what happened
00:47:35through this
00:47:35cultural framework
00:47:36of Christian
00:47:36nationalism
00:47:38the founding
00:47:39fathers
00:47:40always believed
00:47:41that Christians
00:47:42deserved
00:47:43to be
00:47:44counselors
00:47:44to the king
00:47:45not deserved
00:47:46they needed
00:47:47to be
00:47:47counselors
00:47:47to the king
00:47:48the people
00:47:49whispering
00:47:49in the ear
00:47:50of the leaders
00:47:50counseling
00:47:52them
00:47:52do this
00:47:53and don't
00:47:53do that
00:47:54conservative
00:47:55talk
00:47:55often is
00:47:56better for
00:47:57the ratings
00:47:58than Christian
00:47:59preaching
00:47:59so there's
00:48:00been an
00:48:00intermingling
00:48:01of conservative
00:48:02talk
00:48:02and Christian
00:48:03preaching
00:48:04that for
00:48:05a certain
00:48:05amount
00:48:06of the audience
00:48:06they can't
00:48:07tell the
00:48:07difference
00:48:07anymore
00:48:08what is
00:48:08conservative
00:48:09versus
00:48:09what is
00:48:10Christian
00:48:11this idea
00:48:12of the
00:48:13separation
00:48:13of church
00:48:14and state
00:48:14still seems
00:48:15to come up
00:48:15even though
00:48:16it's not
00:48:16in the
00:48:16constitution
00:48:17it's not
00:48:17in the
00:48:17bill of
00:48:18rights
00:48:18no
00:48:18it's not
00:48:19in any
00:48:19of those
00:48:19foundational
00:48:20documents
00:48:21the majority
00:48:22of conservative
00:48:23Christians
00:48:24are not
00:48:24extreme
00:48:25Christian
00:48:25nationalists
00:48:26but it
00:48:28makes
00:48:28great
00:48:28television
00:48:30we are
00:48:30running
00:48:30straight
00:48:31at
00:48:31satan
00:48:32both
00:48:32swords
00:48:32drawn
00:48:33and it's
00:48:34fringe
00:48:34voices
00:48:34that tend
00:48:35to do
00:48:35best
00:48:35on media
00:48:36because
00:48:37they say
00:48:37outrageous
00:48:37things
00:48:38the gender
00:48:39wage gap
00:48:40is a lie
00:48:40that a man
00:48:41can become
00:48:41a woman
00:48:42is a lie
00:48:42that a baby
00:48:43in the womb
00:48:44is just a
00:48:44clump of cells
00:48:44is a lie
00:48:45that the rich
00:48:46don't pay
00:48:47any taxes
00:48:47outrage
00:48:48is shaping
00:48:49millions of
00:48:50American
00:48:50Christians
00:48:51more than
00:48:52church
00:48:53and that's
00:48:54a problem
00:48:54they're told
00:48:55over and over
00:48:56and over again
00:48:56that you're in
00:48:58danger
00:48:58and you need
00:48:59to be more
00:48:59afraid
00:49:00the enemy
00:49:00is wokeism
00:49:02it's CRT
00:49:02it's liberals
00:49:03it's all these
00:49:04things that are
00:49:05dismantling America
00:49:05and it's a really
00:49:06clear narrative
00:49:07join us
00:49:08and you'll have
00:49:09purpose
00:49:09and here's your
00:49:10enemy
00:49:10here's what I've
00:49:11been telling folks
00:49:12pray for our
00:49:13enemies
00:49:13okay
00:49:14pray for
00:49:15because we're
00:49:15going medieval
00:49:16on these people
00:49:17the church is just
00:49:18being outflanked
00:49:19by better
00:49:20storytellers
00:49:21and there are
00:49:22media figures out
00:49:24there who know
00:49:25exactly what
00:49:25they're doing
00:49:26they are lying
00:49:27and manipulating
00:49:28and stoking
00:49:29the fears of
00:49:30these people
00:49:30using religious
00:49:31rhetoric to make
00:49:32a lot of money
00:49:34I want Jesus
00:49:35to come
00:49:35the reason why
00:49:36Jesus hadn't come
00:49:38is because people
00:49:38are not giving
00:49:39the way God
00:49:39told them to give
00:49:41if people would
00:49:42call this number
00:49:43and put this
00:49:44victory all over
00:49:46the world
00:49:46on every available
00:49:47voice
00:49:47every available
00:49:48outlet
00:49:49the father
00:49:50he would say
00:49:51Jesus go get
00:49:52him
00:49:55evangelical enterprises
00:49:56raise billions
00:49:58of dollars
00:49:58we're not talking
00:49:59about millions
00:50:00or even hundreds
00:50:01of millions
00:50:01anymore
00:50:02but billions
00:50:03of dollars
00:50:04in mostly
00:50:06ten to twenty-five
00:50:07dollar contributions
00:50:08well the way
00:50:09you get those
00:50:10contributions
00:50:12is by ginning up
00:50:14fear and anger
00:50:17when I was
00:50:18an activist
00:50:19on the religious
00:50:20right
00:50:21I would meet
00:50:22with fundraisers
00:50:23I would hear
00:50:24from them
00:50:25you've got to
00:50:26give me plenty
00:50:27of fear
00:50:29and anger
00:50:30I need to
00:50:31make your people
00:50:32as mad as hell
00:50:33and frightened
00:50:35to go to sleep
00:50:36at night
00:50:36because when
00:50:37they're that afraid
00:50:38they're going to
00:50:39send you
00:50:39a lot of money
00:50:41if you want
00:50:43Armageddon
00:50:43then that's
00:50:44precisely
00:50:45what will be
00:50:46delivered
00:50:47this is
00:50:48the fight
00:50:49I was kind of
00:50:50stricken in
00:50:51conscience about that
00:50:53but over time
00:50:54you kind of
00:50:55learn to
00:50:56engage in a
00:50:56sort of
00:50:58modus vivendi
00:50:59just a way
00:51:00of being
00:51:01we need the money
00:51:02to fuel
00:51:04our work
00:51:05and the only way
00:51:07to get it
00:51:07is
00:51:08more fear
00:51:10and more anger
00:51:12if you're not
00:51:13willing
00:51:14to give up
00:51:15your nation
00:51:15to a woke
00:51:16agenda
00:51:16that's not
00:51:17left
00:51:18it's liberal
00:51:18it's so far
00:51:19liberal
00:51:20it's out to
00:51:21destroy the
00:51:22very fabric
00:51:22of this nation
00:51:23we're taking
00:51:24our nation
00:51:25back
00:51:27well now
00:51:28it's out of
00:51:29control
00:51:3030 years
00:51:31into that
00:51:3240 years
00:51:33into it
00:51:33we have
00:51:35Christians
00:51:35who are
00:51:36terrified
00:51:37of the
00:51:38external world
00:51:39they want
00:51:40to educate
00:51:41your children
00:51:41they want
00:51:42to take
00:51:42your kids
00:51:43from you
00:51:43they don't
00:51:44want you
00:51:44to do
00:51:44anything
00:51:45that resembles
00:51:45Christianity
00:51:46or stand up
00:51:47for what's
00:51:48right
00:51:48or stand up
00:51:49for what's
00:51:49truth
00:51:50and if you
00:51:50believe that
00:51:51you're going
00:51:52to stand
00:51:52with me
00:51:52I need
00:51:53to hear
00:51:53it right
00:51:53now
00:51:59Christian
00:52:00nationalism
00:52:00has these
00:52:01two
00:52:02centered ideas
00:52:03that are
00:52:04really in
00:52:04contrast to
00:52:05one another
00:52:05and it's
00:52:06quite a
00:52:06conundrum
00:52:06one is
00:52:07that the
00:52:08United States
00:52:08is a
00:52:09Christian
00:52:09nation
00:52:09and the
00:52:10other is
00:52:10that
00:52:11Christianity
00:52:11is always
00:52:12under assault
00:52:13in the
00:52:13United States
00:52:13and adherence
00:52:14to Christianity
00:52:15are persecuted
00:52:16people
00:52:16and both
00:52:17of those
00:52:18are proclaimed
00:52:18all of the
00:52:19time
00:52:19that it
00:52:20is Christian
00:52:21and it's
00:52:21default
00:52:22religion
00:52:22and
00:52:23Christian
00:52:24people
00:52:24can't get
00:52:25a break
00:52:25in this
00:52:25country
00:52:26and are
00:52:26persecuted
00:52:26by the
00:52:27authorities
00:52:28of this
00:52:28country
00:52:28undermining
00:52:29Christianity
00:52:30is the
00:52:31central project
00:52:32of the
00:52:32left
00:52:33because it
00:52:34stands in
00:52:34their way
00:52:34we may
00:52:35have to be
00:52:35in prison
00:52:36and suffer
00:52:38great persecution
00:52:39as a result
00:52:40of our
00:52:40commitment
00:52:40to biblical
00:52:41truth
00:52:41we are there
00:52:43my friend
00:52:43that's not
00:52:44hyperbole
00:52:45I mean
00:52:45the writing
00:52:46is on the
00:52:47wall
00:52:47they don't
00:52:48want the
00:52:48gospel preached
00:52:49anymore
00:52:50in fact
00:52:51the governor
00:52:52of New York
00:52:53said we don't
00:52:54want you
00:52:55kind of people
00:52:56in other words
00:52:57we don't want
00:52:57you pro-life
00:52:59people in
00:53:00our state
00:53:01wow
00:53:03there is a
00:53:04biblical narrative
00:53:04of persecution
00:53:06where
00:53:07throughout history
00:53:08if you are
00:53:09faithful to
00:53:10Jesus Christ
00:53:10you will be
00:53:10persecuted
00:53:12so there's this
00:53:13built-in instinct
00:53:14in some American
00:53:14Christianity to say
00:53:15if you're really
00:53:17faithful you're going
00:53:18to suffer and
00:53:18struggle
00:53:20and so that
00:53:20validates your
00:53:21faith
00:53:24because the
00:53:25Bible ends
00:53:26with the
00:53:27most exciting
00:53:28stuff
00:53:29and it's about
00:53:30us being
00:53:30persecuted
00:53:32we're almost
00:53:33excited about
00:53:34being persecuted
00:53:35because it means
00:53:35we're getting down
00:53:36to the good
00:53:37stuff
00:53:37Christians in the
00:53:38West are now
00:53:39experiencing just
00:53:40a small taste
00:53:40of what their
00:53:41brothers and
00:53:42sisters living in
00:53:43restricted countries
00:53:44have experienced
00:53:45for years
00:53:46and guess what
00:53:47it's likely to
00:53:48get worse
00:53:49there are a lot
00:53:49of voices who
00:53:50are telling
00:53:50Christians you're
00:53:51one election away
00:53:52from losing
00:53:52your Christian
00:53:53school
00:53:53you're one
00:53:54election away
00:53:55from losing
00:53:56your church
00:53:57you're one
00:53:58election away
00:53:59from the
00:54:00total takeover
00:54:01of your local
00:54:02public school
00:54:03by far left
00:54:04ideologues
00:54:05who pays
00:54:06your salary
00:54:08so you have
00:54:10millions of
00:54:11people who are
00:54:12in a state
00:54:12of deep
00:54:13anguish
00:54:14where they feel
00:54:15like something
00:54:16that they love
00:54:16is being
00:54:17not lost
00:54:19is almost
00:54:20too passive
00:54:20destroyed
00:54:21and destroyed
00:54:23is too
00:54:25mild
00:54:25maliciously
00:54:26destroyed
00:54:28intentionally
00:54:28and maliciously
00:54:30destroyed
00:54:30something that
00:54:31they love
00:54:33an idea
00:54:34of what
00:54:35America is
00:54:35that is
00:54:36deeply
00:54:37connected
00:54:37to their
00:54:38faith
00:54:39but when
00:54:40you dive
00:54:41in and you
00:54:41say
00:54:41how have
00:54:42you lost
00:54:43liberty
00:54:43for example
00:54:46really there
00:54:47isn't an
00:54:47answer to that
00:54:48because people
00:54:49have not
00:54:49lost liberty
00:54:50in fact
00:54:50first amendment
00:54:51jurisprudence
00:54:52has never
00:54:53been more
00:54:53robust in the
00:54:54whole history
00:54:54of our
00:54:54country
00:54:56we are
00:54:57stopping
00:54:59coal
00:54:59the attacks
00:55:01on judeo-christian
00:55:03values
00:55:06Donald Trump
00:55:07jumped on that
00:55:08message of
00:55:09America is
00:55:10falling apart
00:55:10and you need
00:55:11to fight
00:55:12if you don't
00:55:13want to lose
00:55:13your country
00:55:14it wasn't as
00:55:16though Trump
00:55:16created Christian
00:55:17nationalism
00:55:18or in any way
00:55:18brought this
00:55:19onto the scene
00:55:20it had been
00:55:20with us for
00:55:20decades before
00:55:21but what Trump
00:55:22gave it was a
00:55:23megaphone
00:55:24in America
00:55:24we don't worship
00:55:25government
00:55:26we worship God
00:55:30now we were hearing
00:55:32this rhetoric
00:55:33much more often
00:55:35and much more
00:55:35loudly
00:55:36than ever before
00:55:37we don't want
00:55:38to see God
00:55:39forced out
00:55:40of the public
00:55:41square
00:55:41driven out
00:55:42of our schools
00:55:43or pushed out
00:55:45of our civic
00:55:46life
00:55:46we want to see
00:55:48prayers before
00:55:49football games
00:55:50if they want
00:55:50to give prayers
00:55:57Donald Trump
00:55:58understood
00:55:59something that
00:56:00was untapped
00:56:01out there
00:56:01about resentments
00:56:03about us
00:56:04versus them
00:56:05about being
00:56:07part of the tribe
00:56:08and once you
00:56:09add that
00:56:10religious element
00:56:11to all of this
00:56:12and you think
00:56:12of Christianity
00:56:13as the sword
00:56:14and the shield
00:56:15you can see
00:56:16how that ramps
00:56:17everything up
00:56:18Jews will not
00:56:20replace us
00:56:21Jews will not
00:56:23replace us
00:56:25there were people
00:56:26in that rally
00:56:27and I looked
00:56:28the night before
00:56:28there were people
00:56:31protesting
00:56:31very quietly
00:56:33the taking down
00:56:35of the statue
00:56:36of Robert E. Lee
00:56:40I'm a national reporter
00:56:42my beat
00:56:42is the intersection
00:56:43of religion
00:56:44and politics
00:56:46when I cover
00:56:47certain events
00:56:48I have to be concerned
00:56:49about whether or not
00:56:51violence could occur
00:56:51there
00:56:52and that wasn't
00:56:53necessarily true
00:56:53a few years ago
00:57:00political violence
00:57:01has just been a part
00:57:02of the last few years
00:57:03covering Christian
00:57:05nationalism
00:57:05we are in the midst
00:57:08of a civil war
00:57:09between good and evil
00:57:10the good is all
00:57:11the folks you see here
00:57:12we pray that each of us
00:57:15we even have people
00:57:16arming up now
00:57:18I know plenty of pastors
00:57:20who go into the pulpit
00:57:21now armed with a
00:57:22semi-automatic handgun
00:57:25my own spiritual family
00:57:27sees violence
00:57:29as perhaps an effective tool
00:57:36one of the key questions
00:57:38when we look at
00:57:39Christian nationalism
00:57:40is how does it condone
00:57:41violence
00:57:42and political violence
00:57:43the Bible is full
00:57:45of commands
00:57:46to not just love
00:57:49one's neighbor
00:57:49to love one's enemies
00:57:52Christian nationalism
00:57:53is going against
00:57:54the core teachings
00:57:55of Christianity
00:57:56do you think he looked
00:57:57like this effeminate picture
00:57:59that we always see
00:58:00of him that
00:58:01he didn't look like that
00:58:03he was a tough guy
00:58:04and that's the Jesus
00:58:05that I want to be like
00:58:07that's the side
00:58:08that I want to be like
00:58:09over the last decades
00:58:11in these devotional books
00:58:13that millions
00:58:14of Christian men
00:58:16and women read
00:58:17we see the rise
00:58:19of a more muscular Jesus
00:58:23you see a Jesus
00:58:24who is a warrior Christ
00:58:27I don't serve a dead Jew
00:58:28in a Palestinian tomb
00:58:29I serve a risen Savior
00:58:30with power and glory
00:58:31that victoriously
00:58:32came up out of a grave
00:58:33and he took the keys
00:58:34of death and hell
00:58:35and the Bible says
00:58:36in Genesis chapter 3
00:58:37in verse 15
00:58:38that the serpent
00:58:39would bruise his heel
00:58:40but the heel of that man
00:58:42would bruise Satan's head
00:58:47Christian nationalists
00:58:48will hold up some teachings
00:58:50and neglect others
00:58:52when the Bible is brought in
00:58:54it's the book of Revelation
00:58:55Revelation 19
00:58:57shows us a Jesus
00:58:59you can't control
00:59:00this is not gentle Jesus
00:59:03meek and mild
00:59:03this is giant Jesus
00:59:06mighty and riled
00:59:08the Bible does depict
00:59:10a warrior Jesus
00:59:12just with a very different
00:59:14kind of warfare
00:59:15the warfare takes place
00:59:17spiritually through the means
00:59:18of the gospel
00:59:19not through physical violence
00:59:22in the New Testament
00:59:24Jesus repudiated that
00:59:26when his own disciple
00:59:27Peter pulled out the sword
00:59:29to defend him
00:59:31from being arrested
00:59:32and Jesus said
00:59:34put away your sword
00:59:35those who live by the sword
00:59:37will perish by the sword
00:59:38but there are people
00:59:41who will translate
00:59:42spiritual warfare categories
00:59:45into literal political violence
00:59:48get the f*** out of the way
00:59:50what the f*** up
00:59:52you want some trouble
00:59:53there is a righteous use of force
00:59:57in a fallen world
00:59:58a righteous use of weaponry
01:00:00in a fallen world
01:00:01yes Jesus will bring peace
01:00:03but only after he slays his enemies
01:00:06the enemy is ruthless
01:00:09and so to protect the church
01:00:12to protect God's people
01:00:14you need to engage in violence
01:00:19one of the biggest fallacies
01:00:21about religion
01:00:22especially Christianity in particular
01:00:24is that somehow
01:00:25it's going to make you meek
01:00:26and docile
01:00:27and understanding
01:00:29when as a matter of fact
01:00:30we can look throughout history
01:00:32whether we're talking about
01:00:33American history
01:00:34or we're talking about
01:00:35Roman history
01:00:36or anything else
01:00:36that Christianity
01:00:38has also always been
01:00:40associated with violence
01:00:41it's not just Islam
01:00:43it's Christianity too
01:00:45you don't get wars of religion
01:00:46without people believing
01:00:48that the cross
01:00:49is going to go before them
01:00:50and fight their battles
01:00:53of all symbols
01:00:54they could have chosen
01:00:55the Ku Klux Klan
01:00:58chose the cross of Christianity
01:00:59but they perverted it
01:01:02and used that cross
01:01:04as a symbol of terror
01:01:07for them
01:01:08to be Christian
01:01:09is to believe
01:01:11that the society
01:01:12is quote unquote
01:01:13for the white man
01:01:15other people are supposed
01:01:17to be subordinate
01:01:18not just as a matter of politics
01:01:19but as a matter of religion
01:01:21and that's where
01:01:23Christian nationalism
01:01:24goes off the rail
01:01:26is because
01:01:27what it tends to suggest
01:01:29most often
01:01:30is that God
01:01:34ordains
01:01:35injustice
01:01:37Trump is
01:01:38going in
01:01:39and trying to take
01:01:39America by the hand
01:01:41and say
01:01:41we can be great again
01:01:43I'm coming to you
01:01:43as a prophet
01:01:45as a man of God
01:01:46and I'm telling you
01:01:47it's time to pray
01:01:48for the president
01:01:51but here's what the Holy Spirit
01:01:53said to me last night
01:01:54and here's what he said
01:01:54for me to tell you
01:01:56oh my God
01:01:58there's going to be
01:01:58an attempt
01:01:59to take him out of power
01:02:01let's stand
01:02:02and pray right now
01:02:04come on
01:02:05help me out
01:02:05right now
01:02:06I want you to lift your voice
01:02:07everybody help me pray
01:02:09keep him Holy Spirit
01:02:11Christian support for Trump
01:02:13had an extra degree
01:02:14of fanaticism to it
01:02:15that much of the mainstream media
01:02:17just missed completely
01:02:19and that fanaticism
01:02:21was supplied by prophecy
01:02:22somebody had to do it
01:02:25I am the chosen one
01:02:26I said Mr. President
01:02:27I know there are people
01:02:28that say
01:02:29you know
01:02:29you said you were
01:02:30the chosen one
01:02:32and I said
01:02:34you were
01:02:35I think God
01:02:36calls all of us
01:02:38to fill different roles
01:02:40at different times
01:02:41and I think that
01:02:43he wanted Donald Trump
01:02:44to become president
01:02:45and that's why
01:02:46he's there
01:02:47a lot of it
01:02:47was centered around
01:02:48a feeling that
01:02:49they were participating
01:02:50in this tremendous move
01:02:52of God
01:02:53to save the United States
01:02:55of America
01:02:55through this unlikely hero
01:02:58somebody who was going
01:02:59to deliver God's people
01:03:00even if he wasn't
01:03:01necessarily a believer
01:03:02himself
01:03:03a Cyrus figure
01:03:05one evangelical leader
01:03:06Lance Wallnau
01:03:07believes Trump
01:03:08is like the Persian king
01:03:10Cyrus the Great
01:03:11according to the Bible
01:03:12Cyrus ruled over
01:03:13ancient Babylon
01:03:14and made a decree
01:03:16that the Jewish temple
01:03:17should be rebuilt
01:03:18Trump has the Cyrus
01:03:20anointing
01:03:21to navigate in chaos
01:03:23they speak of Donald Trump
01:03:25as a new messiah
01:03:26they speak of him
01:03:28as a godly person
01:03:30who is directly
01:03:31communicating
01:03:32with God
01:03:34God spoke to me
01:03:36alright
01:03:37what's going to happen
01:03:38in 2020
01:03:38I think
01:03:39President Trump
01:03:40is going to be
01:03:41reelected
01:03:42handily
01:03:43we thank you
01:03:44for this nation
01:03:45that was born
01:03:45in 1776
01:03:47we pray in 2020
01:03:49it would be born again
01:03:51by 2020
01:03:52the election
01:03:53is Donald Trump's
01:03:54divine destiny
01:03:55here is the long
01:03:57and winding road
01:03:58to 270
01:03:59in the commonwealth
01:04:01of Massachusetts
01:04:02Joe Biden
01:04:03the projected winner
01:04:04tonight
01:04:04in the state of Maryland
01:04:06Joe Biden
01:04:07the predicted winner
01:04:08tonight
01:04:09this is a fraud
01:04:10on the American public
01:04:13this is an embarrassment
01:04:14to our country
01:04:17we were getting ready
01:04:18to win this election
01:04:20frankly
01:04:21we did win this election
01:04:25the president came out
01:04:27claimed he won something
01:04:28that he has not won yet
01:04:29and neither has Joe Biden
01:04:30to be clear
01:04:31because we were still
01:04:31counting ballots
01:04:32and the president
01:04:33also threatened legal action
01:04:34even though
01:04:35there's nothing to challenge yet
01:04:36because ballots
01:04:37are still being counted
01:04:38if you count the legal votes
01:04:41I easily win
01:04:42the Fox News decision desk
01:04:45can now project
01:04:46that former vice president
01:04:47Joe Biden
01:04:48will win
01:04:49Pennsylvania
01:04:49and Nevada
01:04:51Donald Trump
01:04:52will be denied
01:04:53a second term
01:04:57facts don't matter
01:04:59what you see
01:05:00with your own eyes
01:05:01doesn't matter
01:05:03I have access
01:05:04to a secret source
01:05:06of knowledge
01:05:07that tells me
01:05:08this election
01:05:09was stolen
01:05:11if you believe
01:05:12that Donald Trump
01:05:13was anointed by God
01:05:15to be president
01:05:15if you believe
01:05:17that America
01:05:17was founded
01:05:18as a Christian nation
01:05:20and that we need
01:05:21to get back
01:05:22to those godly principles
01:05:24if you believe
01:05:25those things
01:05:26then
01:05:27how could the election
01:05:29not have been stolen
01:05:30the media said
01:05:32Joe Biden's president
01:05:33ha ha ha ha
01:05:35ha ha ha
01:05:37ha ha ha
01:05:37ha ha ha
01:05:38if you viewed
01:05:40Donald Trump
01:05:41as Cyrus
01:05:42the pagan king
01:05:43that God had anointed
01:05:44to save his people
01:05:46then you were looking
01:05:48for what was going
01:05:49to happen next
01:05:50that would make it all
01:05:51make sense
01:05:52it was billed
01:05:53the million MAGA march
01:05:55today thousands
01:05:56of President Trump's
01:05:57supporters gathered
01:05:57in the nation's capital
01:05:58many of them
01:05:59refusing to accept
01:06:00that president-elect
01:06:01Joe Biden
01:06:02won the election
01:06:03I believe it's a blessing
01:06:05God's got his hand
01:06:06in all of this
01:06:06Donald Trump
01:06:07because he got so many votes
01:06:09and they had to backfill
01:06:10now we all know
01:06:11it was it was fraud
01:06:13Donald Trump
01:06:14will be our president
01:06:15for four more years
01:06:17the whole idea
01:06:19that the election
01:06:21was stolen
01:06:24became
01:06:25just widely accepted
01:06:27among Christians
01:06:30I hear an army
01:06:33of angels
01:06:33coming from heaven
01:06:35to help
01:06:35our beautiful president
01:06:37win this battle
01:06:38of good versus evil
01:06:40you started to hear
01:06:41rhetoric
01:06:42about spiritual warfare
01:06:45this is an epic battle
01:06:47of good versus evil
01:06:51God raised up an army
01:06:54and I'm telling you
01:06:55right now
01:06:56with all of my soul
01:06:57with all my heart
01:06:57I've not lost
01:06:58one moment's sleep
01:06:59over what's going to
01:07:00happen on the 6th
01:07:01I declare unto you
01:07:02that God Almighty
01:07:03is about to get glory
01:07:05he's about to show up
01:07:06he's about to step
01:07:07off his throne
01:07:08he's about to do
01:07:09something in this nation
01:07:10that's going to be
01:07:11so glorious
01:07:13and so you basically
01:07:14had a group of people
01:07:15who believed
01:07:16that God had called them
01:07:18to Washington D.C.
01:07:20and to storm the capital
01:07:25for thine is the kingdom
01:07:27and the power
01:07:29and the glory
01:07:30forever
01:07:31amen
01:07:32on January 5th
01:07:34there was
01:07:36a religious rally
01:07:37before the event
01:07:39on January 6th
01:07:40what they call
01:07:41Jericho marches
01:07:42we know this battle
01:07:43belongs to you Lord
01:07:44and I thank you
01:07:45for every single
01:07:46one of these warriors
01:07:47who have come out today
01:07:48the idea
01:07:49to bring Christian
01:07:50people together
01:07:51to march around
01:07:52the capital
01:07:53in imagery
01:07:54that's supposed
01:07:55to conjure up
01:07:56the nation of Israel
01:07:58marching around
01:07:59the walls of Jericho
01:08:02go out to face them
01:08:04tomorrow
01:08:05amen
01:08:06and if you know
01:08:07that story
01:08:08it's the story
01:08:09where the walls of Jericho
01:08:10come crumbling down
01:08:13still these demonstrators
01:08:15keep believing
01:08:15that some revelation
01:08:16could possibly change
01:08:17the election outcome
01:08:18and they insist
01:08:19their concerns and hopes
01:08:20shouldn't be ignored
01:08:21or belittled
01:08:22the church
01:08:23is not a bear
01:08:24that they should have poked
01:08:25they went to march
01:08:27around the U.S. Capitol
01:08:28in order to send
01:08:30the message
01:08:30that the structure
01:08:31of our government
01:08:32would come collapsing down
01:08:33and would reinstate
01:08:35Donald Trump as president
01:08:36come to the big D.C. marches
01:08:37on the 5th and 6th
01:08:38of January
01:08:39I'll see you there
01:08:40God bless
01:08:42this was not a secret
01:08:43they were advertising it
01:08:52people didn't just show up
01:08:53they went to churches
01:08:55and got on buses
01:08:56and drove across the country
01:08:57to be at these rallies
01:08:59on January 5th
01:09:00we thank you Lord
01:09:01you are going to bring
01:09:02the exposure
01:09:03that needs to take place
01:09:04for all of us
01:09:05that have friends
01:09:06and family members
01:09:07that think we're crazy
01:09:09you were primed
01:09:10to believe that
01:09:11you've been under siege
01:09:13by secular society
01:09:14quote unquote
01:09:15for quite some time
01:09:16then it's not a huge leap
01:09:18to say
01:09:19well
01:09:19this is the apocalypse
01:09:21this is the end times
01:09:22and we have to do
01:09:23whatever we can
01:09:24to stop that from occurring
01:09:25this struggle
01:09:27God has put us in
01:09:28to test us
01:09:29and God is on our side
01:09:31and incredible things
01:09:33are coming
01:09:33this is nothing less
01:09:36than an epic struggle
01:09:37between the godly
01:09:39and the godless
01:09:40between good and evil
01:09:45and we will win this fight
01:09:47or America will step off
01:09:49into a thousand years
01:09:51of darkness
01:09:52and I'm telling you
01:09:53Jesus is a lamb
01:09:54that takes away
01:09:54the sin of the world
01:09:56but he is not just a lamb
01:09:59he is the lion
01:10:00of the tribe
01:10:01of Judah
01:10:02and he's about to roar again
01:10:04in the United States
01:10:05of America
01:10:07we're going to take
01:10:08our nation back
01:10:10Christian nationalism
01:10:11provided the permission structure
01:10:13to attack
01:10:15the beating heart
01:10:16of American democracy
01:10:17you look like
01:10:19fucking traitors
01:10:20we are the true
01:10:22f***ing lions
01:10:23we are the true
01:10:24f***ing heroes here
01:10:33so in graduate school
01:10:35I was an American historian
01:10:37by training
01:10:38American religious historian
01:10:39but I had an outside field
01:10:4220th century Germany
01:10:43with a focus on
01:10:46the German Christian movement
01:10:49I had a fascination
01:10:50with how could
01:10:52Christians
01:10:54participate in a movement
01:10:55like the Third Reich
01:10:57and how could they do so
01:10:59not kind of neglecting
01:11:01their Christianity
01:11:02or at least not
01:11:03to their mind
01:11:04but as Christians
01:11:06twisting their Christianity
01:11:08in such a way
01:11:10that it was compatible
01:11:11with Nazism
01:11:15when Adolf Hitler
01:11:17ascended
01:11:17to the chancellorship
01:11:19he didn't seize power
01:11:21it was given to him
01:11:22by a very Christian
01:11:24electorate
01:11:25who declared him
01:11:28in 1933
01:11:29to be a gift
01:11:30and miracle
01:11:32from God
01:11:36and I remember quite well
01:11:38when I was being trained
01:11:40as a minister
01:11:40we were told
01:11:41never prepare a sermon
01:11:43without consulting
01:11:45the Dictionary of New Testament
01:11:47Theology
01:11:48edited by Gerhard Kittel
01:11:50a good German
01:11:52evangelical Bible scholar
01:11:54nobody ever told me
01:11:56that Gerhard Kittel
01:11:58was Adolf Hitler's
01:12:00resident theologian
01:12:01that gave him
01:12:02the theological justification
01:12:04for genocide
01:12:05why didn't we ever know
01:12:09that one of the theologians
01:12:11we consulted most often
01:12:13justified
01:12:14genocide
01:12:19boy
01:12:21that was an eye opener
01:12:25one doesn't derive
01:12:27one's values
01:12:29from scripture
01:12:31one inserts
01:12:33one's values
01:12:34into scripture
01:12:50let us pray
01:12:56let us pray
01:12:57Lord
01:12:59let your plans
01:13:01stand forever
01:13:02and may your purpose
01:13:04for this nation
01:13:05stand strong
01:13:07almighty God
01:13:09have compassion
01:13:12on us
01:13:13with your
01:13:14unfailing love
01:13:18as our lawmakers
01:13:21prepare
01:13:22to formally
01:13:23certify
01:13:25the votes
01:13:39guide
01:13:41our legislators
01:13:42with your wisdom
01:13:44and truth
01:13:47people thought
01:13:49that they were there
01:13:50to defend God
01:13:52to defend their faith
01:13:53and to defend democracy
01:13:55while they were trying
01:13:56to overturn
01:13:57our democracy
01:13:58this is our
01:14:00capital
01:14:24you had crosses
01:14:28you had bible verses
01:14:35pictures of Jesus
01:14:37we're here storming the gates
01:14:40of the government
01:14:47they're praying
01:14:49in the name of Jesus Christ
01:14:53they were using religion
01:14:55as a way to justify
01:14:59overturning democracy
01:15:11Christian nationalism
01:15:12uses Christianity
01:15:14as a means to an end
01:15:16that end
01:15:17being some form
01:15:18of authoritarianism
01:15:22if there's a religious
01:15:24basis
01:15:25for one's authority
01:15:27one is able to say
01:15:28you're not just wrong
01:15:30you're on the wrong
01:15:31side of God
01:15:32the body of Christ
01:15:33is the one that's going
01:15:34to make America
01:15:35great again
01:15:35one of the things
01:15:37one of the things
01:15:37I am afraid
01:15:38of is that
01:15:40I see the erosion
01:15:41of democratic norms
01:15:43and institutions
01:15:44I see a shocking
01:15:45lack of commitment
01:15:46to American democracy
01:15:49among many
01:15:49American Christians
01:15:50and it's not clear
01:15:52to me
01:15:52where that will stop
01:15:54Jesus Christ
01:15:56we can vote your game
01:15:57this threat
01:15:58of what
01:15:59I no longer
01:16:00even pretend
01:16:01is evangelicalism
01:16:02this white
01:16:07religious
01:16:09nationalism
01:16:10may present
01:16:13one of the greatest
01:16:14dangers ever
01:16:16to our democratic
01:16:17experiment
01:16:23it's an ugly exercise
01:16:25to try to imagine
01:16:26what America might do
01:16:28as a fascist state
01:16:33thank you for allowing
01:16:34the United States
01:16:35of America
01:16:35to be reborn
01:16:36thank you for allowing
01:16:37us to get rid of
01:16:38the communists
01:16:38the globalists
01:16:39and the traitors
01:16:40within our government
01:16:41we love you
01:16:41and we thank you
01:16:42in Christ's holy name
01:16:43we pray
01:16:44amen
01:17:01after January 6th
01:17:03there was a brief moment
01:17:04where Christian nationalism
01:17:06came into the limelight
01:17:07the problem isn't
01:17:09Christianity
01:17:10one of the world's
01:17:11great religions
01:17:11no this particular brand
01:17:13of Christianity
01:17:14that is linked up
01:17:15with the Trump movement
01:17:16is a different kind of thing
01:17:17Christian nationalism
01:17:19it seemed like the country
01:17:21was gonna notice
01:17:23and wake up
01:17:23to this threat
01:17:27and that didn't happen
01:17:28don't believe what you see
01:17:30on the press
01:17:30it was
01:17:31there's
01:17:32it was a
01:17:32it was over a million
01:17:33wonderful wonderful
01:17:35wonderful wonderful people
01:17:36who were singing
01:17:38worship songs
01:17:39and loving Jesus
01:17:40so they broke into the capital
01:17:42because D.C. police
01:17:43didn't do their job
01:17:44the D.C. police
01:17:44they didn't break into anything
01:17:46they let them in
01:17:47not only did they let them in
01:17:50it's paid for by tax dollars
01:17:52that's all
01:17:53they were Americans
01:17:53and they were innocent
01:17:55something that makes me fear
01:17:57for the future
01:17:58is that we see Americans
01:18:00reevaluating what happened
01:18:01on January 6th
01:18:03you know if you didn't know
01:18:04the TV footage was a video
01:18:05from January the 6th
01:18:07you would actually think
01:18:08it was a normal tourist visit
01:18:10they wandered freely
01:18:12through the capital
01:18:13like it was their building
01:18:14or something
01:18:14they didn't have guns
01:18:16but a lot of them
01:18:17had extremely dangerous ideas
01:18:18they talked about
01:18:19the constitution
01:18:20and something called
01:18:21their rights
01:18:22so my colleague
01:18:23Samuel Perry
01:18:24gathered data
01:18:26in February of 2021
01:18:27and found that
01:18:29three quarters of
01:18:30ambassadors
01:18:31and accommodators
01:18:32of Christian nationalism
01:18:33said those that
01:18:34engaged in the riot
01:18:35should be prosecuted
01:18:36when he asked the same
01:18:37question six months later
01:18:39that number had dropped
01:18:40to around 50%
01:18:43and so as time continues
01:18:45to move on
01:18:45are we going to continue
01:18:46to see them reevaluate
01:18:48the insurrection
01:18:48and move from
01:18:50this was a crime
01:18:51to well maybe this was
01:18:53a necessary evil
01:18:55to possibly moving towards
01:18:57well this was necessary
01:18:58and it was actually good
01:18:59that we attacked the Capitol
01:19:00I think that's a real possibility
01:19:02something that should concern
01:19:04every American
01:19:05but especially
01:19:06American Christians
01:19:08now what we're seeing
01:19:10is Christian nationalists
01:19:11more emboldened
01:19:12and more entrenched
01:19:13in their disinformation
01:19:15and their ideology
01:19:17without the Bible
01:19:18there is no modernity
01:19:20without the Bible
01:19:21there is no America
01:19:23our biblical inheritance
01:19:25is at the center
01:19:27of our politics
01:19:27it is the question
01:19:29of the age
01:19:30welcome back
01:19:31we are following
01:19:32the historic ruling
01:19:33from the Supreme Court
01:19:34the conservative majority
01:19:36has overturned
01:19:37the landmark Roe vs. Wade ruling
01:19:39for the first time
01:19:41since 1973
01:19:42abortion is no longer
01:19:44a nationwide right
01:19:45you have now freed us
01:19:47from the shackles
01:19:49of Roe vs. Wade
01:19:51we thank and we praise you
01:19:55yes it's going to be hard
01:19:56I know as a working mom of four
01:19:58it's not easy working
01:20:01and being a mother
01:20:02and I'm married
01:20:03right
01:20:03I can only imagine
01:20:05if I were a single mother
01:20:06it's hard work
01:20:08but you can do it
01:20:10and guess what
01:20:11the pro-life movement
01:20:12stands with you
01:20:13every single step
01:20:15of the way
01:20:16in a world
01:20:17without Roe vs. Wade
01:20:19American evangelicals
01:20:21will face
01:20:21the greatest
01:20:23ethical crisis
01:20:24we have ever faced
01:20:26which is
01:20:27will we take
01:20:29all the hundreds
01:20:30of millions
01:20:31of dollars
01:20:32raised
01:20:34to end abortion
01:20:35will we now take
01:20:36that same amount
01:20:38of resources
01:20:39and marshal them
01:20:40to help
01:20:41women who are facing
01:20:43unwelcomed pregnancies
01:20:46the children
01:20:47that are born to them
01:20:50most of the people
01:20:51I knew
01:20:52in the pro-life movement
01:20:53were quite sincere
01:20:55in their belief system
01:20:56but none of us
01:20:58had played out
01:20:59the unintended consequences
01:21:01I will say
01:21:03that my attitude
01:21:04about abortion
01:21:05was
01:21:09you know
01:21:09I'm a Catholic sister
01:21:11it wasn't my issue
01:21:12so it was like
01:21:13okay
01:21:14I oppose abortion
01:21:15but then
01:21:16when I was practicing law
01:21:17in Oakland
01:21:18I got appointed
01:21:20by the court
01:21:20to represent
01:21:21a 13 year old
01:21:22who had been raped
01:21:23by her uncle
01:21:24and was pregnant
01:21:25and so my responsibility
01:21:27as her lawyer
01:21:28was to walk with her
01:21:30and help her make choices
01:21:32that forever shifted
01:21:34my approach
01:21:35because what I realized
01:21:37is
01:21:38that it's not
01:21:39this
01:21:42antiseptic
01:21:43removed decision
01:21:45they're human beings
01:21:48struggling
01:21:49struggling
01:21:50so
01:21:52I became
01:21:53much more nuanced
01:21:54about the reality
01:21:55we'll be winning
01:21:56we did it
01:21:58we did it
01:21:59we did it
01:22:00I've been working
01:22:01and praying
01:22:02for the past
01:22:02like five years
01:22:03for this day
01:22:04but we still have
01:22:05a ton of work to do
01:22:06to get all the states
01:22:07to ban abortion
01:22:08but this is a huge step
01:22:09we love
01:22:11the cultural generation
01:22:12and we
01:22:13will abolish
01:22:15our election
01:22:22I think this is a really good time
01:22:24for Christians
01:22:25to engage in really careful reassessment
01:22:28to go back to the scriptures
01:22:32and to read those
01:22:34with fresh eyes
01:22:36and see
01:22:36what God's teachings are
01:22:39to look at the life of Christ
01:22:42and to look at what Jesus calls us to do
01:22:46and who Jesus calls us to be
01:22:49and then
01:22:50to take a look
01:22:52at
01:22:53your political views
01:22:58the United States
01:22:59as a political entity
01:23:01its future is uncertain
01:23:03we don't know
01:23:04what might happen
01:23:05we hope for the best
01:23:10the United States of America
01:23:12is a people movement
01:23:14and we will be
01:23:16however the people
01:23:17of this country
01:23:17choose to be
01:23:19that's what we're going to be
01:23:20as a nation
01:23:24I make a very sharp distinction
01:23:27between patriotism
01:23:28and nationalism
01:23:30nationalism is
01:23:31something that is
01:23:33usually idolatrous
01:23:34and self-exalting
01:23:40patriotism
01:23:41I think
01:23:41is gratitude
01:23:43for being in a country
01:23:45as magnificent
01:23:47as this one
01:23:50this was an accident
01:23:52of history
01:23:53we are fundamentally
01:23:55a nation of immigrants
01:23:56so we came from
01:23:57all over the place
01:23:58speaking different languages
01:23:59worshipping different gods
01:24:01however you think about
01:24:03this country
01:24:04the one thing that cannot
01:24:06be denied
01:24:06is that at the heart of it
01:24:08is the idea of pluralism
01:24:11e pluribus unum
01:24:13that's the whole
01:24:15shebang right there
01:24:16out of the many
01:24:18one
01:24:22the biggest sin
01:24:25if you will
01:24:25of Christian nationalism
01:24:27is that it sees pluralism
01:24:29as a weakness
01:24:30and not what it is
01:24:32the foundation
01:24:33of what it means
01:24:34to be American
01:24:41this is what puzzles me
01:24:43Christian nationalists
01:24:44treating multiculturalism
01:24:46as a threat to America
01:24:48even though that is America
01:24:51there's a version
01:24:52of American nationalism
01:24:53that's trying to
01:24:55camouflage itself
01:24:56as Christianity
01:24:57and it's doing
01:24:58a whole lot of damage
01:24:59not just to our democracy
01:25:01but to the reputation
01:25:02of our faith
01:25:03faith ought not to be reduced
01:25:05to an ideology
01:25:06certainly not an ideology
01:25:08of hate
01:25:08or exclusion
01:25:09God is in me
01:25:11and God is in you
01:25:11and we need to
01:25:13work together
01:25:14and really
01:25:15fight for a better life
01:25:16for everybody
01:25:20Christianity at its best
01:25:22committed to love
01:25:23and truth
01:25:24and justice
01:25:27has and always will
01:25:28be a powerful
01:25:29powerful force
01:25:30in the face of sickness
01:25:33the church created hospitals
01:25:34in the face of people
01:25:36needing to be educated
01:25:37the church created
01:25:39universities
01:25:41in the face of Jim Crow
01:25:42and racism
01:25:43the church
01:25:45marched from churches
01:25:46into the street
01:25:47across bridges
01:25:48went to jail
01:25:48and forced
01:25:50non-violent change
01:25:52everywhere you look
01:25:54when the church
01:25:55has been at its best
01:25:56it protects people
01:25:58regardless of their race
01:25:59their creed
01:25:59or their sexuality
01:26:05Jesus' last sermon
01:26:06he was talking about
01:26:07I'm going to judge
01:26:08the nations
01:26:09by these things
01:26:10I'm not going to judge
01:26:11you by your skyscrapers
01:26:13I'm not going to judge
01:26:14you by your tax cuts
01:26:16I'm not going to judge
01:26:17you by your military
01:26:20when people were hungry
01:26:21did you feed them
