00:03send them in dear john jansen at gmail.com people have questions john's got advice he's got answers
00:08let's go steelhead fishing oh yeah dear john i recently won a full guided steelhead fishing trip
00:17for a half day on the grand river or muskegon river okay i've never been steelhead fishing
00:22but i have the basic knowledge of fishing in general what should i expect on the trip and
00:26is there any personal gear you would suggest i bring thanks um i would imagine if it's a full
00:33guided tour most of those you will be using the gear of the guide and so just check with them
00:39and they'll tell you exactly what you need to bring and it's probably good first of all a good
00:46pair of polarized sunglasses that is i will never go fishing without them uh especially if i'm river
00:52fishing um the next thing is uh i would make sure that you've got if you're going to be waiting
00:58in
00:58i don't know if you're waiting or if it's going to be in a boat um have some good rain
01:03gear stay
01:04comfortable that will that will make a lot of difference in the world um and a good camera
01:10everybody's got their cell phone with them but it's it's it's a little tricky when you're on the water
01:16because if you drop that cell phone i know they still it's it they're harder to find but you can
01:20get them on amazon get yourself a disposable camera you can always get the pictures digitized
01:25um when you take them to whether it's cvs walgreens whatever um those are the things that i would take
01:31if you're going on a guided guided trip they'll have everything that you need to actually fish with
01:40and love it heather any advice on steelhead fishing you know enjoy the moment yeah take it all
01:46wear sunscreen i don't worry about that stuff yeah get yourself a little vitamin d it's okay
01:51i feel like that was the mom advice for going on the fishing trip uh next one is the will
01:56yes so
01:56dear john my grandma passed away last year and she left a hefty inheritance but how it was assigned
02:02has created some family drama she has two kids my dad and his brother who each got roughly five
02:08hundred thousand dollars in assets homes cars jewelry cash etc in total there are three grandkids me
02:14my brother and my cousin grandma left the boys each twenty five thousand dollars and she left me
02:19a hundred thousand dollars we're all in our mid-twenties but i'm the oldest and as the only girl i
02:25was
02:25closest with her it was kind of an open secret that i was her favorite she'd even say it out
02:30loud
02:30sometimes i spent way more time with her and over the summer she taught me how to garden and taught
02:35me all the family recipes do i need to split it evenly to keep the peace or should i keep
02:40it no tell
02:41your brother and your cousin to get over it this is grandma's wishes she could do whatever she wants
02:46to with her money she left the majority of it to her two sons all right that's great and then
02:54she put
02:54a little bit of a clause in there for her grandkids the other ones hey they could be mad at
02:59grandma all
02:59they want but it doesn't they should not have any effect on how they treat you or how they feel
03:04about you
03:05yeah she's not the one that assigned the money no it was grandma it was grandma and and you know
03:10what
03:10again just deal with the fact that grandma decided where she wanted her money to go and if she put
03:18in
03:18the time and effort to build a relationship with grandma and and not that the other ones didn't
03:24but maybe they didn't have as close of a relationship especially as the end was nearing
03:31get over it no you no do not if you want to do something really cool then do something that
03:36would honor your grandma and maybe it's a little piece of jewelry or something that was
03:43that makes you remember the relationship you had to her with her totally i i mean i agree with what
03:50you said you don't have to give your brothers any extra no no no respect your grandma's wishes yeah
03:56clearly and yeah the issue is on there and get over it yeah john in college oh is this me
04:02in college
04:02it's about when you were in college kind of okay dear john i went to eastern michigan during the 90s
04:09where my buddies and i who despite being fans of a poorly run lions organization at the time decided
04:14to do a weekly tv show called the lions dome main it was basically if bob and doug mckenzie and
04:21wayne's world did a lions themed talk show it ran for four seasons on ann arbor cable access
04:26we had a blast doing it drank beers on tv we even had brett perriman on for an episode okay
04:31well i can't
04:32say we were immensely popular people did recognize us when we were out and um we're considering should
04:38we get back together and do a podcast my question is twofold you went to michigan during this time did
04:43you see our show and everybody's got a podcast is it worth doing signed rob regular listener
04:50well it depends what you want to get out of the podcast yes the the world is flooded with podcasts
04:55um and so if you have something that is unique something that is entertaining then first of all
05:06do it for yourself if you enjoy doing it what are your reasons why doing it's just a couple of
05:12buddies
05:12getting together talking about lions football and you put it out there it doesn't take a lot of work
05:16to do that now if you want to monetize it that's where it becomes more of a job a job
05:21and that's a
05:23completely different thing if you want to monetize it now it's going to take probably more than three
05:29or four years to build up the fan base the listenership all those different things how much
05:33time and effort are you willing to put into it um and in regards to you know did i see
05:39your show
05:40i may have i don't know i a lot of things in college i don't remember um i remember all
05:46the
05:46games but i don't remember tv shows or sports shows you weren't watching local ann arbor television
05:52channel 12 no chose a channel 12 i think that's what he put in there yeah not even remember there
05:56was a channel over 50 episodes oh wow you didn't watch any of them john well he doesn't remember
06:01yeah he might have to your point about a podcast yeah if you're doing it for fun great if you're
06:05going to scale it though these days you got to have video you got to have graphics you're going
06:10to have to do thumbnails you're going to market it you got to sell it got to be really good
06:13at
06:13social media yeah it's a whole new game now but if you want to do it and you want to
06:17do it for fun
06:18go for it yeah absolutely yeah don't let anyone stop you it could be really cool all right the last
06:24one
06:24dealing with death dear john this is a hard one last month i lost my dad suddenly to a heart
06:29attack
06:29he was only 58 years old and was my go-to for everything car trouble call dad issues with the
06:35house dad would be right over with tools to help fix it same with my two brothers both younger he
06:40always had the right advice i feel lost without him any advice on how to move forward without his
06:46influence um write down all the moments that you had with your dad and things that he said because
06:55unfortunately we are fallible humans and we will forget things so while it's all fresh in your
07:00mind and it doesn't matter it could be the middle of the night and you wake up have a notepad
07:05next to
07:05your bed if you have a memory of something that he said a situation that happened don't care i don't
07:11care about the sleep take the time to write it down it could be the middle of the day and
07:15something
07:15triggers a memory write it down and keep it somewhere where you get a chance to look at it so
07:21you can go
07:21back and remember all these memories and remember some of the advice that he gave you because now
07:26you're the go-to you need to be the go-to guy and it's it and maybe you weren't paying
07:31enough
07:31attention when he was fixing your car or he was fixing your house um you don't necessarily have
07:37to be that but there's going to be other people in your life that are going to now look to
07:41you
07:42for that and there's other people in your life that you can also lean on for help as well you've
07:47got
07:47two brothers your mom might still be alive i i don't know the situation but lean on family
07:53they're there to support you as well and i think you got to accept like you're not always going to
07:57have all the answers but i think john what you brought up is really wise because you can still
08:03keep him in your life yeah by doing what you said there's the saying that you die twice you die
08:09when
08:09you die and you die when people stop saying your name well yeah pass on some of those things that
08:14your dad taught you right i mean those are other ways to keep him very much top of mind and
08:19relevant
08:19and important in your life and when those moments happen during the day your brother's going through
08:23the same thing like give him a call yeah and talk to him about it and they'll have things that
08:28maybe
08:28you forgot about or maybe things that happened to them advice that their dad gave them that maybe
08:33you weren't privy to and again it's all about make a record of those moments so you don't forget
08:41all of those great things and on a much lighter note if you can't do something there's probably
08:46a youtube video that could help you these days for sure there is there you go that's dear john send
08:52them in dear john jansen at gmail.com it's 97 one
08:55you
