Leeds entrepreneur Helen Gibson MBE has reframed encouragement as key to reaching your potential in her debut book. The core message of 'Go For Goosebumps' is how to navigate the "porridge moments" of modern life and create more of the energising experiences that drive purpose and legacy. One reviewer has said it is a refreshing reminder that encouragement, both given and received, can transform our outlook and help us thrive.

00:00I'm Helen Gibson and I'm author of Go For Goosebumps, which is my first book.
00:07The concept for Go For Goosebumps is very much around encouragement.
00:13And encouragement matters because it's where we get our courage from.
00:18And I think so often we can get bogged down with life and the day-to-day
00:23and what I call the porridge of life, so those sticky, difficult bits.
00:28And this is about how we can wade and navigate through that porridge
00:34and get more of those goosebump moments that we're after.
00:39So it is the moments of joy, it's the moments of excitement,
00:43it's the slightly scary moments, but it's really encouraging us
00:47and those around us to go for more of those goosebump moments.
00:52Very simplistically, I've got a traffic light system.
00:56A lot of what I write about is informed and born out of work
01:01that has been done in very difficult situations in countries around the world
01:07that are hostile environments or countries that are not your honeymoon destinations,
01:13but your fragile and conflict-spective countries.
01:17To that extent, some of the reflections and thoughts and ways of operating
01:21that I'm talking about in the book, it is grounded in that
01:26and being able to move and pivot from some of the most difficult,
01:32sometimes disastrous situations in the world is increasingly complex
01:37and challenging, I think, on a global level,
01:41but also locally for us individually in terms of finding our ways within that.
01:47And therefore, to that extent, it's right to recognise what we can't change,
01:55but equally, we've got a huge amount of agency and opportunity ourselves.
02:02Just throwing out our own pebbles into the water and seeing the ripples of that,
02:08yes, we are only one person, one situation,
02:12but it's amazing what a difference we can make
02:15if we've got the right kind of encouragement.
02:19And to me, that is the key thing around encouragement.
02:24It's one of those things, again, we can all do it.
02:27It's not anything fancy, it's not anything high-tech,
02:30it's not anything that's going to cost us,
02:33but it can be as simple as a thank you, a thumbs up, we've got this.
02:39And knowing that you've got that kind of encouragement,
02:42even if you can't change all the things around you,
02:46if you've got the right kind of ingredients there with encouragement,
02:51you can begin to unleash the maximum potential within ourselves
02:58and the people that we're relating to.
02:59Okay.
