00:01Researchers surveyed about 3,500 people across the state and have estimated there are close to 1 million privately owned
00:09e-mobility devices across Queensland, including almost 600,000 e-bikes.
00:15It follows tough new laws introduced by the Queensland Government in July, which brought in licensing standards and age requirements.
00:23They also gave police new powers to seize and destroy non-compliant devices.
00:27Those laws, of course, were introduced in response to growing community concern about a rise in injuries and fatalities related
00:35to the devices, as well as them being increasingly linked to reports of illegal and unsafe behaviour.
00:41Now, this survey found in the majority of cases of non-compliance, people were reporting owning e-devices which were
00:48able to travel faster than the maximum speed limit of 25 kilometres an hour without pedalling.
00:54The University of Queensland team behind the research has called for more education to be made available to people when
01:00they purchase these devices.
01:02Other survey findings include the fact that about one-third of e-bike riders are aged over 60 and the
01:08average age of an e-scooter rider is in their mid-30s.
01:11Findings, researchers say, go a long way to dispelling some of the myths around who's riding these devices and what
01:17they're using them for.
