00:00High noon, Jones and Keefe, W-E-E-I, taking you up until 2 o'clock on a Would You
00:05Rather Wednesday.
00:07If you missed our Would You Rathers or the hashtag Dork Minute, Odyssey app, A-U-D-A-C-Y.
00:12Get it on your phone. It's free. It's easy. You can take it with you wherever you go.
00:16You can also vote at Jones and Keefe on Twitter and Instagram.
00:20In the Jones and Keefe 1990s slash early 2000s heavy metal, new metal, grunge, alternative, pop punk, butt rock, and
00:26rock bands bracket.
00:28Apologies to our guy Terp. I know it didn't go very well for Creed.
00:32I just ripped up my bracket. It's gone.
00:33It didn't go very well for Creed yesterday, but a couple of matchups in the OzFest region.
00:38System of a down. The one seed against the number 16, Power Man 5000, and the 8-9 matchup, Orgy
00:43and Mudvayne.
00:44Still to come, Rob, not Spider, Zombie, the Marilyn Manson.
00:49Could be a collision course for Rob and his brother.
00:52That's how the selection committee kind of structured that. I see that now.
00:55And then Linkin Park and Static X. So stay tuned for that.
00:59At Jones and Keefe. You can follow there on Twitter and Instagram.
01:02Follow Keefe at Keefe21. Jones at Jones, W-E-E-I.
01:06And follow Terp at Justin M. Turpin. Pure hoops with Terp. What's up, Terp?
01:10What's up, guys? I'm really bummed about Creed.
01:12The bracket's already in the trash.
01:15There's a stain on this tournament now.
01:17No, stain is later.
01:19They're actually coming there later on in the region.
01:22I voted the offspring. I know Keefe voted the offspring there.
01:24So apologies all around there, Terp.
01:28Celtics playing pretty well. We spent a lot of time on this yesterday.
01:31Who do you think deserves more credit for where the team is at?
01:35And I think the real answer is they both deserve a lot of credit.
01:37But now you've got to pick one.
01:38Is it Brad Stevens for finding some of the pieces on this roster?
01:43Like Hugo, who was great the other night.
01:46Kata, even Jordan Walsh, Baylor Shireman.
01:49Some of these pieces that have stepped up.
01:52Or is it Joe Mazzula for developing them?
01:54Who deserves more credit in your view?
01:56I give it to Joe Mazzula and the coaching staff as a whole.
01:58If you were to sit here a couple months ago and tell me that Celtics would be allowing the fewest
02:02points per game,
02:03would be a top five defensive team, and would be a top ten rebounding team,
02:07I would have thought you were insane.
02:08And I think everyone probably would have echoed that sentiment.
02:11Like, the defense was supposed to be terrible.
02:12And they've been one of the best in all of basketball.
02:15And just the way that they will maximize the talents of everybody up and down the roster.
02:19Like, look at Hugo Gonzalez, Jordan Walsh, Luka Garza when he's getting in the game.
02:23Josh Minot before he was shipped off.
02:26Nami Ishkata, I mean, he should be in the running for most improved.
02:28The way that he's developed into a starting caliber and one of the most impactful starting centers in the NBA.
02:34So, I give Joe Mazzula and this coaching staff as a whole a ton of credit for just maximizing the
02:40talent.
02:40Because that's what they needed to do.
02:41To get to where they are right now on a 50-plus win pace, they had to maximize the talent
02:47from up and down the roster.
02:48And if you look at it, like, who is really underperformed?
02:51Everyone's kind of punching above their weight or, you know, you would have thought realistically.
02:56I thought Derek White maybe the only one.
02:57But Derek White, I wouldn't say he's underperformed.
02:59He's just kind of performed.
03:00It's just the shooting numbers.
03:02Like, if you look at what he's doing defensively.
03:04I think both he and Pritchard have been a little underwhelming.
03:06But it's not like they've been awful.
03:08I'm with you on that.
03:08Again, it's just the shooting numbers.
03:09Like, if you're looking at Pritchard and his, like, playing the point guard position, he's been terrific.
03:14He's not turning the ball over.
03:15He's creating for others.
03:16Like, he's been great.
03:17And same thing with Derek White, like, just obviously named Defensive Player of the Month.
03:21And he's been so impactful defensively.
03:23So, I think with those two, it's easy to highlight because of the shooting inefficiencies or the, you know, the
03:28inconsistencies, rather, would probably be a better fit word.
03:30But, yeah, like, everyone's just taking a collective step.
03:34And I think a lot of that credit goes to Joe Missoula.
03:36Do you think there's anything to the fact that the Celtics do play so hard every single night that come
03:41playoff time that, like, want to and try?
03:45Like, that is sort of negated because now you're in the playoffs where everyone's doing that?
03:49Yeah, this was a scout's view, right, to Tim Bontemps.
03:51He relayed that to him and said...
03:53Because we would say this about a lot of Thibodeau teams, right?
03:54Whether it was the Bulls or the Knicks or wherever Thibodeau was, those guys would play defense.
03:58He'd play as starters 45 minutes, which I know Missoula doesn't do.
04:01But, like, he would go balls out.
04:03They'd have these great records.
04:04Then they get to the playoffs.
04:05And it's like all the teams are now trying really hard.
04:07And they should, but they don't in the regular season.
04:10So do you see that where right now that looks like they might be the best team in the East,
04:14but if everyone's going max effort, things might be different.
04:17Well, when you look at the guys that are kind of...
04:19When you think of the max effort, you think of the Ugos, the Jordan Walshes, you think of those guys,
04:23and they're really not playing a ton.
04:24Because Taylor Shireman could be added into that as well.
04:28Because they are very similar players.
04:30They all present different kind of things that they can do, but they're very similar prototypes.
04:35And they're kind of interchangeable in that sense that I don't get the sense that any of them are really
04:39wearing down.
04:40And now we're over 60 games into the season.
04:42So it's certainly a valid concern.
04:44But when you're looking at the top guys, and you could look at Derek White, Peyton Pritchard...
04:48No, I don't even necessarily mean that those guys hit a wall.
04:51It's more like Detroit, New York, Cleveland is playing at an 85% clip.
04:57And now at playoff time, they kick it up to 100.
04:59Yeah, you could certainly look at it that way.
05:00Yeah, no, it's totally a valid concern.
05:02Especially when you look at the games played from Jalen Brown.
05:05We talked about this last week.
05:06He's only missed like six.
05:07I think Derek White's missed two.
05:08Peyton Pritchard missed one.
05:09When you look at it that sense, yeah, you can absolutely look at it that way.
05:12But they're a young team.
05:14And I think the way they play offensively, they're a little bit slower.
05:18They're on the slower side of pace.
05:19One bottom third of pace might even be the last team in pace.
05:22Which was not what we expected coming into the year.
05:24We thought they were going to be a much faster team.
05:26So it's certainly a valid concern.
05:27But I think another thing that goes to the Joe Mazzula point from the first question is just the standard
05:33that they play with every night.
05:34And I know you guys are referencing the stat that they're 10-1 when they're without Jalen Brown, Derek White...
05:39Well, that was your stat.
05:40Yeah, thank you.
05:40Yeah, that was a good stat of the week.
05:43I don't think I've won that award yet.
05:44So I'm kind of coming for it.
05:45A lot of noms, though.
05:46Yeah.
05:46Like Susan Lucci over here.
05:47That's true.
05:48You've been right around it.
05:50But yeah, so if you look at that, the standard that he sets.
05:53And just night in and night out, they're bringing that competitiveness.
05:57And they're bringing that effort.
05:59And that's what they needed to do to have the type of season that they're having.
06:02And again, you just can't say enough about the job that both of them did.
06:06Like Brad Stevens locating these guys.
06:08And Joe Mazzula maximizing the talent.
06:10Talking to Justin Turpin, W-E-E-I.com.
06:12Great stats like the one he just referenced at Justin M. Turpin.
06:15He joins us at High Noon every Wednesday.
06:17We call it Pure Hoops with Turp here on Jones and Keith.
06:21You can always dial us up, 617-779-7937.
06:24Let's mix in some phone calls here, Turp.
06:25And then we can get to the latest on Tatum.
06:28Calvin is in Methuen.
06:29Hello, Calvin.
06:31All right.
06:31How are you doing, guys?
06:32Great.
06:33I want to talk facts.
06:34I'm a Mamba guy.
06:36Listen, you guys have the greatest team ever.
06:39No ego.
06:40Play defense.
06:42You got some dogs.
06:44I think if you guys trade Tatum for three more dogs, you guys are going to be unstoppable for a
06:50few years.
06:51Young coach.
06:52Young players.
06:54Tatum is a dog.
06:55Gonzalez is a dog.
06:57Why is a baby peeping?
06:58You guys, I don't think you guys don't know what you guys got.
07:01Okay.
07:02That thing is sick.
07:03Okay, so Tatum is sick.
07:04How do you have room for three more dogs?
07:06Tatum for three dogs.
07:07If you have all these dogs, how do you get three more on the court?
07:09Those kids from San Antonio.
07:10You send Tatum to San Antonio and get two of those dogs they got.
07:14Which dog are we talking?
07:14You guys are going to be unstoppable for five years.
07:16Wambayama?
07:17Those guys with the long hair, with the crazy hair, they dogs, too.
07:20Verazow?
07:22Their best player shaved their heads.
07:24That's a good point.
07:25We don't need no mouths.
07:27We don't need no cats.
07:28Keith, we have an expert here.
07:30Where?
07:30Terp.
07:31Tatum for three dogs.
07:33Depends on the kind of dogs we're talking, I guess.
07:35But no, no.
07:36What are we talking about?
07:37Mastiff, Newfoundland, Pitbull.
07:40Wemby and Castle.
07:41Yes.
07:42You'd have to do it.
07:43Tatum for Wemby straight up.
07:45Tatum for Wemby?
07:46Yeah, I would do that.
07:46Tatum for Wemby?
07:48I'd probably do that.
07:48Yeah, it's Wemby and Almy.
07:49Good.
07:50We got him.
07:51We got him.
07:51All right.
07:53Did he say he's a Mamba fan?
07:55Is that what he said in the beginning?
07:56Like a Kobe fan?
07:57Then wouldn't you be a Tatum guy?
07:58Good question.
07:59There's no bigger Mamba fan than Tatum.
08:01I was going to say.
08:01Good point.
08:02You guys could be in the same group together.
08:03I don't know.
08:04That's weird.
08:05I don't need to go down that road.
08:07I'm not trading either.
08:07You're out on trading Tatum?
08:08Yes.
08:09Of course I'm out on trading Jason Tatum.
08:11I'm a Mamba guy.
08:12If we could make a headline for that.
08:13Yeah, of course I'm out on trading.
08:15Terp says don't.
08:16Don't trade Jason Tatum.
08:17Don't trade Tatum at last year's deadline.
08:18Revolutionary idea.
08:19Okay.
08:20How about Cesar in North Kingstown?
08:21I think I have a feeling where this Rhode Island answer is going on Missoula or Stevens.
08:25Go ahead, Cesar.
08:26Yeah.
08:27You already know.
08:27I'm going to go with the big dog and head coach right now.
08:32I'm not going to call him a Newfoundland, guys, because Newfoundland's only gets you eight years max.
08:36I got to go with a little smaller, a little hard dog that goes to the paint strong because you
08:41know he's going to last forever.
08:42A hard dog.
08:43All right?
08:44Yeah, a big, strong dog.
08:45That's what I'm talking about.
08:46Newfoundland's just a lot.
08:47They don't give you enough time span.
08:48They're beautiful big dogs.
08:49Hey, we get it.
08:49Get the shoes.
08:50They've got big hearts.
08:51And we love big hearts in Boston here.
08:53You know, I understand that.
08:53But I want a dog that's going to give me 15 years longevity, loyalty, and work hard all day, every
08:58day.
08:59Shout out Bishop and Kendrick in.
09:00Let's go ahead, coach.
09:01So that's Missoula's going to give you the fifth?
09:04Who's going to burn out quicker?
09:05You know, Jonah Jones is little scrappy dogs.
09:06Those dogs live forever.
09:08Look, man, he's outlived his teeth.
09:09He's 13 years old.
09:10His teeth are one.
09:11Teeth only made it to like 10.
09:12The rest of them, still kicking.
09:13Still kicking.
09:14Good dog.
09:16Bad owner.
09:18Who do you think burns out quicker here in Boston?
09:20Stevens or Missoula?
09:21I would definitely answer that Missoula.
09:22If we're going dog shelf life.
09:23I think it's the nature of the head coach position in the NBA.
09:26Those guys.
09:26It's just naturally the jobs.
09:27And like, especially him.
09:28Yeah.
09:29Especially him.
09:30With Joe?
09:31Yes.
09:31A high-strung guy?
09:32Yes.
09:33Oh, yeah.
09:33I mean, just the nature of the jobs.
09:35Like, you imagine just like where they're at right now.
09:38I mean, this is the groundwork is set for years to come.
09:42Like, these guys will both be here.
09:43And I don't know.
09:44Keith, you mentioned the other day that you thought that Brad Stevens would
09:46eventually get the itch to go back to coaching.
09:48I thought so.
09:48It just doesn't seem that way.
09:49No, it doesn't.
09:49No, no, no.
09:50That's past.
09:50Especially not now in the NIL days.
09:53Like, who wants that headache?
09:54Well, he's also, he's had way too much success, too.
09:57It's not even just like, what does he want to do?
09:59It's like, he's been really good at this.
10:00And he's done it both ways.
10:02He's done it where he's been able to spend a ton of money.
10:04And they've won.
10:05And then it's also, hey, you can't spend as much money.
10:07He's like, okay.
10:09I thought maybe with the new owner, maybe the changeover, he would say,
10:12all right, I'm done.
10:13Like, this isn't what I signed up for.
10:14But, no, he's kind of met this challenge head on.
10:17I mean, they both deserve a ton of credit.
10:18I would just go with Stevens just for, like, finding all these guys that can
10:22play, like, for real cheap.
10:24You know, to sort of go with.
10:25The fact that not only did you get rid of all your guys, but one of the guys
10:29that you are paying the most money isn't even playing.
10:31And you're still the second seed in the Eastern Conference.
10:33They kind of owe Joe one for the 23-24 season.
10:36Because under the same logic that, like, oh, he had this super talented team
10:39that he couldn't win it, Mark Dagnall won it.
10:41Like, they kind of owe Joe a Coach of the Year award.
10:43But it seems like Bickerstaff, just looking at the odds.
10:46If they finish with a better record, right, and if you look at the roster
10:49side by side, as much as we're giving credit to Missoula, like,
10:53the Pistons aren't exactly the 96 Bulls.
10:56No.
10:56It's Cade Cunningham and a bunch of other, like, solid players.
10:59So, like, he deserves it, too.
11:00No, I mean, look, I don't think it's wrong to vote for Bickerstaff over Missoula.
11:04But I think Missoula deserves a lot of love for that.
11:06I think he's validated himself as a top-shelf coach this year.
11:10You almost don't want to win it.
11:10If you look at the list of some of the guys that have won it,
11:12they'll get fired.
11:13Who's the guy that got fired the year he won it?
11:16Was it Nurse?
11:16No, it was Dwayne Casey.
11:17Oh, Dwayne Casey.
11:18There you go.
11:18That's right.
11:19That's right.
11:20The year he won it, he got fired.
11:22It's not an award you even want.
11:24Jason Tatum coming back would help Joe Missoula.
11:27Another episode of The Quiet Work dropped last night.
11:30I didn't think there was much newsy in it.
11:32We pulled one clip, but it dropped last night after the Kings and Sons
11:35at, like, 2 o'clock Eastern time in the morning.
11:38I don't think that's a game many people were staying up for, period.
11:41So they're like, what a bizarre release.
11:43Are they, like, releasing these episodes by accident?
11:45Is there a big brain-like idea to release them quickly because Tatum's coming back?
11:50I think that's your stance on this.
11:52I'm thinking it more that way.
11:53So that's a good theory.
11:54Were you kind of looking at it like it might be a mistake that they kind of aired them too
11:57quick?
11:57I think, at least for episode 3, I think they wanted to give, like, a little preview of it
12:02so they aired it, but they weren't releasing it on YouTube.
12:04People latched onto it.
12:05Well, it blew up.
12:05Tatum's like, I didn't come back to your role player.
12:07If it didn't blow up on social media, I'm not sure they would have released it in full.
12:11Tatum clearly wasn't ready for it.
12:13He didn't, like, he wasn't like, hey, here's episode 3 of The Quiet Work.
12:16I think they kind of got flat-footed with it.
12:18Now they're releasing them.
12:19So I wonder if it tells us anything about a timeline for his return.
12:23I know you feel that way.
12:24What would you have circled for a timeline for a return for him or a date for a return?
12:28It sounds like it'll be soon.
12:30I know a lot of people are looking at Friday, but I still lean March 14th.
12:34I just think you get the logistics of the schedule.
12:36The 3-14 theory has started to pick up some steam.
12:40People are, like, tying it with the contract.
12:41We were a good seven, eight days ahead of the 3-14 theory getting picked up and getting a lot
12:47of runs.
12:48Schedule, though, right?
12:48So, like, say it's Friday against Dallas.
12:50They play one home game, then they go to Cleveland, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City.
12:54It does.
12:55Pretty much, there's a night between each game.
12:58I know.
12:58If he comes back against Washington, starting against Washington, they play six of seven at home.
13:03Just from a recovery standpoint, from a practice time standpoint, like, they'll be able to get into the practice facility
13:08over that stretch.
13:10It just, with the schedule, I think it makes a little bit more sense for 3-14.
13:14But, if you look at, like, if you're trying to ramp up, I mean, what better way to do it?
13:17You come back against Dallas, and then you get one of Cleveland, San Antonio, or Oklahoma City, at least you'd
13:22imagine.
13:22But, you still got some good teams when you come back anyway.
13:25I know Washington, that's a very soft landing spot for your first game.
13:28Second worst defense in the league.
13:30And, probably going to be worse after Trey Young plays a couple more games.
13:33Then, Phoenix.
13:34Did he get thrown out before he even played?
13:36Yes.
13:36Oh, he got thrown out of the game, yeah.
13:38Then, you got Phoenix, which is a tough team.
13:40Now, Devin Booker's back.
13:41Golden State, Memphis, Minnesota, Oklahoma City, Atlanta.
13:44Like, there's good teams in there as well.
13:46So, I just think, logistically, with the schedule, March 14th would make a little bit more sense.
13:51And, you know, again, you're at home for six of seven.
13:54You can get in the practice gym.
13:56You can get, like, easier rehab, I'd imagine.
13:58So, I think March 14th would be the one I have.
14:01All right.
14:013-14.
14:02It's really picking up Steve.
14:04It's roulette here.
14:05That's 16 games left.
14:06If he plays the run time.
14:08If he's 16.
14:09Not that he would play in every one of them, but that's how many the team would have left.
14:12So, say he plays.
14:1312?
14:148 or 9.
14:15Yeah.
14:15Like, I'm just thinking, like, erring on the side of caution.
14:17Like, it could be closer to 12.
14:19But say it's even 8 or 9, right?
14:20You feel like that's a good amount.
14:22There's two back-to-backs.
14:23I'd argue that's less than ideal.
14:25It's not like he can't get traction, but I would say that's less than I would want.
14:28But with the Eastern Conference, like, how bad it is, can you view that first round?
14:32And I know you don't want to mess around with playoff games, but depending on who they draw.
14:35A little bit.
14:36You can probably view that first round as kind of another aspect.
14:39Put a pin in that, because I have a question on a potential matchup.
14:41But do you have another question for Terp?
14:42No, I was just saying, for me, it would be like 10 or 12 games I'd feel pretty good about.
14:45And then to Terp's point, I think that first round you could even add.
14:48I wouldn't want those to be included in the 10 or 12, just in my mind.
14:51But you don't need to go crazy.
14:52And there might even be times where, if you want, you can sit in the fourth quarter or things like
14:57that.
14:57The way they're playing right now, the team you get tonight at the Garden, and this is a selfish question,
15:02because, brag, I'll be in the building.
15:04Oh, that's right.
15:04I forgot all about this.
15:05For Celtics and Hornets.
15:06No, I know it's a sneaky good one.
15:08So I'm saying, what if you get the Hornets in the first round?
15:10I don't know if that's a team you can, like, ease a guy in against would be my only point.
15:15The thing with the Hornets, though, is their defense still has a ton of questions.
15:18Like, offensively, they're great.
15:20Con's been awesome.
15:21Don't they allow, like, no points?
15:22Is it all pace?
15:22Is that why?
15:23It's a lot of pace.
15:24And also, like, their splits are so weird this year.
15:28Like, in games that they win, they have the best plus minus.
15:31It's not even close.
15:32Like, when they win, they're blowing teams out.
15:34When they lose, it's kind of the opposite way.
15:36Their defense hasn't been as good.
15:37There's some question marks there.
15:39But this is a good one.
15:40I mean, over their last 15 games, these guys are tied for the second most wins in the league.
15:43So this will be a good one.
15:44Have you ever seen LaMelo Ball's feet tattoos?
15:48Yeah, the Cheetos.
15:49The hot Cheetos?
15:51No.
15:51Toes.
15:52Cheetos.
15:53I have not.
15:53No, that's good.
15:54So he tattooed, or I don't think he did.
15:56I think he had somebody tattoo all five of his toes like a red color.
16:01Probably LiAngelo did that.
16:03LiAngelo might have.
16:03Yeah, I'd imagine.
16:04Yeah.
16:04So they tattooed his toes red and then have, like, some black outline around the top to look like flames.
16:10So people are like, oh, he really got the hot Cheetos.
16:13He's a 90s flame tattoo.
16:14No, it would fit in great at OzFest.
16:16He would look like man.
16:18You wouldn't even bat an eye at OzFest with those things.
16:20If you're driving around the games tonight, be careful.
16:22That guy's a madman on the road.
16:24Yeah.
16:24You hope he's not driving around the city.
16:26Oh, is he?
16:27Oh, yeah.
16:28Oh, yeah.
16:28Oh, I didn't know that.
16:29He got into an oncoming traffic accident.
16:31Yeah, a bunch of mayhem in the city of Charlotte.
16:34Oh, yeah, yeah.
16:35Be careful.
16:36Don't swivel.
16:36But no, this should be a good game tonight, right?
16:38Yeah.
16:38And I mean, I'm not predicting a Celtics loss or anything like the Celtics are playing
16:41well.
16:42Like, I'm not predicting any of that.
16:43I think the Hornets would be, they feel a little bit like Detroit last year and they're
16:48not as good yet, but they feel a little bit like Detroit where we were, or maybe it was
16:51even two years ago where like Detroit's not a team you want to get in the first round.
16:55That's just like, that's going to be a harder first round matchup than you want.
16:58Doesn't mean you lose it.
16:59But that's kind of how I feel about Charlotte.
17:01If you're looking for a team to avoid in round one, give me the Raptors and the magic and
17:05the heat all day.
17:06The Hornets, I probably wouldn't want.
17:08What happened to them?
17:09They stink.
17:10We were sitting here in the summer after the Desmond Bay.
17:12We were like, they dark horse contenders?
17:14Paolo Bancaro made me some cash last night, let me tell you.
17:16But overall, that team's been very underwhelming.
17:18Yes.
17:19Points tonight.
17:19You really adopted the dark.
17:22I was born in it.
17:24Yeah, it wasn't really the effect that people thought.
17:26And if you're looking for bets tonight, I'd probably lean the points.
17:29I think there's going to be a lot of points in this one.
17:31Interesting.
17:31I got to ask you more about that because I will be getting my bets in.
17:35And I was thinking unders.
17:35Okay.
17:36These three's going to be flying tonight.
17:38Good to know, Terp.
17:40Good to know.

17:54Terp, as always, good stuff.
17:55We love it.
17:56All right, guys.
17:57See you.
17:57All right.
17:58We can get to more on the Celtics if you'd like at 617-779-7937.
18:02Good phone calls for Terp, I would say.
18:05Plus, let's circle back to this Trent McDuffie trade from the Chiefs to the Rams.
18:11Does that give you some idea if the Patriots wanted to entertain a Christian Gonzalez trade?
18:16What they could get in return?
18:17Is that worth it?
18:18Let's get to it right after Trending with Billy Lanny.
