00:00Set in Georgia, where reproductive rights have been sharply restricted, the Oscar-nominated documentary short, The Devil is Busy, captures
00:09a day in the life inside a women's health clinic.
00:12At its heart is Tracy, the head of security, who stands on the front lines. As tensions rise outside the
00:19clinic doors, Tracy works tirelessly to protect every patient that walks in.
00:23But women have always been treated as second-class citizens, and I think what you see in this clinic, which
00:29is a female-run and mostly women-of-color-run clinic, is that they do everything they can to treat
00:39the women, again, with utmost respect, and again, just with kindness.
00:45They know how far some of these women have had to travel, again, since the Dodds decision and so many
00:51clinics being shut down, women suddenly have to, like, leave the state for health care.
00:58Director Kristaline Hampton stands as one of only two African-American filmmakers nominated for an Oscar this year, alongside Ryan
01:06Coogler, director of Sinners.
01:08In the wake of the film's impact, she says one of the most powerful shifts has been watching men become
01:13more aware.
01:14We're not going to be thinking. We're not going to be able to see you.
01:16But I do want women to sort of advocate for themselves about their health care, because at the end of
01:22the day, this is really about women's reproductive freedom and reproductive rights, which, as Geeta said, is a human rights.
01:30And one of the things that I've enjoyed watching men who are becoming more aware of the issue and the
01:37impact this decision has made, and I hope that that will, you know, trickle down into voting and trickle down
01:44into education.
01:45So those are the things that I hope people can walk away from this.
01:48And that, you know, if you're a person of faith and have to, like, to not judge people, like, people
01:55may have to make some of the hardest decisions every day of their lives.
01:58In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson's Women's Health Organization overturned nearly 50 years of
02:07precedent, ruling that the Constitution does not guarantee a right to abortion.
02:11Since then, abortion has been banned at all stages of pregnancy in 14 Republican-controlled states, with limited exceptions.
