00:00Work hard, play hard, healthy body, healthy mind, face the future, fear no challenge.
00:10I strive to be the best that I can be.
00:16Work 2000, work hard 2000, play hard, be the best, face the future 2000, work hard,
00:27fear no challenge, fear no challenge, be the best.
00:32Hey everybody, how you doing? I'm Ryan Seacrest.
00:34And I'm Maria Sansom.
00:35Swing shot, the wall, assault, the eliminator for years.
00:38You've been watching grown-ups compete in these great American Gladiator games.
00:41Well, it's time for the adults to hit the showers and let the kids take the field.
00:46Welcome to Gladiators 2000.
00:48All right, yeah, yeah, let's meet the red team.
00:52This 10-year-old wants to be a professional bike racer or an athlete.
00:55His favorite subject is art. He plays all kinds of sports.
00:58It's Jared Allen.
01:01She's a junior lifeguard who is also on a softball team.
01:04She likes math and reading. She's 11-year-old Lauren Arnone.
01:07The coaches for the red team today are ice and laser.
01:11And for the blue team, he's nine.
01:13He's into soccer, baseball, basketball, and swimming.
01:16His favorite subject is spelling and his name, Freddie Flaxman.
01:20This 11-year-old loves soccer, football, and basketball.
01:23And she wants to be an American Gladiator when she grows up.
01:26It's Jennifer Goodman.
01:29Coaching the blue team today are Turbo and Sky.
01:34Let's do it!
01:35All righty, yeah!
01:37Folks, it's big, it's bad.
01:39Ladies and gentlemen, it is the wall.
01:41A 32-foot vertical climb.
01:42Our wall is divided into five different zones.
01:44We'll set the clock to 90 seconds and each contender will have to climb as high as they can, as fast as they can.
01:50You know all the rules.
01:51They'll earn five points every time they get their entire body into a new zone.
01:55And if someone gets to the top before time runs out, they'll earn 10 extra bonus points, Maria.
02:00First up, Freddie Flaxman from the blue team.
02:04And Jared Allen from the red team.
02:08Blue team ready.
02:09Red team ready.
02:10Our officials are ready.
02:12Let's kick it.
02:14All right, now, Freddie on the blue team on the left.
02:17On the red team, Jared.
02:19Jared.
02:19Jared ahead by just a little bit there.
02:21Freddie having a little bit of trouble in that first part of the wall.
02:23If you get your entire body into a colored zone, starting with the blue, it's worth five points.
02:27And the first person over the top will get 10 bonus points.
02:29Second person over, five bonus points.
02:31Here goes Jared now, trying to get into the next section for 10 points.
02:34Jared doing real well.
02:35And Freddie having a little bit of trouble at the bottom, but now picking up for what he lost at the bottom.
02:39Well, yeah, I talked to Freddie and Jared before the event because I like to talk.
02:42And they said, hey, this is going to be a piece of cake.
02:46You hear the crowd chanting along.
02:50Turbo and Laser down at the bottom cheering them on as well.
02:54The higher you get on the wall here, the more tired your arms, your shoulders, your legs get.
02:58And you can see Jared taking his time, plotting out where he's going to put his feet.
03:02Getting closer to that red zone using that big stone there.
03:05And by this time, you're just exhausted.
03:06This is the part in the wall where the wall juts out.
03:09These guys don't know what their other contender, the guy on the other team is doing.
03:13Yeah, yeah.
03:14They can't see it.
03:15They can just hear the crowd and do their best and fire it up and get up there fast.
03:18So he doesn't know if the other, if he doesn't know, Jared doesn't know.
03:22Oh, no, and Freddie fell.
03:23That's okay.
03:24That's okay.
03:25Freddie's got time to get back up onto the wall.
03:26Meanwhile, Jared is almost into the red zone.
03:29Now his entire body is in there.
03:31Now it happens when Freddie fell.
03:33All the points that he had are erased from the wall.
03:36Erased from zero again.
03:37Meanwhile, Jared is almost up.
03:38Jared is over.
03:39He is over the top.
03:42He is over.
03:44No problem.
03:45That is the sound of the whistle.
03:48Right now, we can throw it to Peggy, who will tell us exactly what happened score-wise on this event.
03:52Peggy.
03:53Jared earned 30 points for the red team.
03:55Freddie earned zero points for the blue team.
03:58We'll be back to see how Jennifer Goodman and Lauren Arnone do when they get to scale the wall.
04:03So fire you, I wouldn't go away.
04:07Don't you love popcorn?
04:11I read somewhere.
04:14And yeah, I read.
04:15What of it?
04:16Anyway, popcorn's been around 5,600 years.
04:21Not this bag, though.
04:22This one's fresh.
04:25The Pilgrims ate popcorn at the first Thanksgiving.
04:33In colonial times, they covered popcorn with cream and sugar and ate it for breakfast.
04:40Sky says as long as we don't drown it in butter and salt, popcorn air-popped or cooked in canola oil is actually good for us.
04:49Why?
04:50Because it's roughage.
04:53And roughage helps our digestion.
04:55Now that we know it's good for us, it doesn't seem so appetizing, does it?
05:00Wrong!
05:00Welcome back to Gladiators 2000.
05:09We've already seen our first two contenders take on the wall.
05:12But as fast as they may be, we've got something that travels even faster.
05:16Really?
05:16Really.
05:17Wow.
05:17He should have covered his mouth.
05:22Two friends meet, they shake hands, it all seems perfectly normal.
05:27But what they don't realize is this is exactly how communicable diseases travel from one person to another until at last.
05:34Illness strikes.
05:39Communicable diseases are spread through microscopic organisms like viruses and bacteria.
05:44The naked eye can't see them, but trust me, they're there.
05:47This is a magnification of what's going on inside the human body.
05:52Viruses are dangerous little monsters that invade healthy cells and multiply until there's so many of them, they eventually kill the cell.
06:01Charming.
06:01Measles, mumps, and AIDS are examples of communicable diseases caused by a virus.
06:07Then there's bacteria, which damages healthy cells by producing toxins.
06:12Toxins are poisonous organisms that lead to diseases like strep throat and pneumonia.
06:17Let's keep following the path of our friendly little disease, shall we?
06:21Poor Lazer.
06:22He doesn't know it yet, but he just transferred those germs to his towel.
06:25And if someone else were to pick up that towel, well, you get the point.
06:30Diseases like the flu or mononucleosis can spread by nearly any contact.
06:34If someone is sick in your family, remember to be very careful what you touch.
06:39But the best way to stay well is to have a healthy lifestyle.
06:42Eat a balanced diet, exercise, and get enough rest so your body can recharge its batteries.
06:48Hi, guys.
06:49Want some salad?
06:50Sure.
06:50You bet.
06:51Great.
06:52Quick, toss me something to wipe this up.
06:53Here.
06:55No.
06:56We are back for the second half of the wall.
06:59Now standing by for the blue team, Jennifer Goodman.
07:04And for the red team, Lauren Arnaud.
07:09Okay.
07:10Blue team ready?
07:12Red team ready?
07:13Ready?
07:14Our officials are ready.
07:15Let's start it.
07:18Go, go, go, go.
07:19Here we go, folks.
07:22It is the wall.
07:24Trying to race to the top before the clock runs out.
07:28The first person over before 90 seconds run up.
07:31They get 10 bonus points.
07:32Lauren on the red team.
07:33Jennifer on the blue team.
07:35Jennifer, just a hair behind.
07:37Listen to the crowd chanting Lauren's name.
07:40Lauren!
07:40Lauren!
07:41Lauren!
07:42They got a support group here for her.
07:44Here she goes.
07:46Meanwhile, on the blue side, it's Jennifer trying to get up into that next zone for 10 points.
07:53Now this is a very difficult part in the wall.
07:55You can see where it starts to jut out a little bit.
07:57You're starting to get tired, and this is a difficult part.
07:59Yeah, you look up.
08:00You see, okay, where am I going to go from here?
08:01Look down.
08:02You got your feet there.
08:03Okay, my hands are here.
08:03My feet are here.
08:04What if I do this?
08:04What if I do that?
08:05You see?
08:05Oh, look at the foot come off there.
08:07Lauren!
08:07You have to be real careful and concentrate.
08:09Kind of flat out where you're going.
08:10You don't want to slip.
08:12Good recovery, though.
08:12She gets back on board there.
08:14Coming up into the next zone.
08:19Great job here.
08:20Oh, no!
08:24Lauren now.
08:25She has got to start over.
08:27Oh, look at this!
08:28And they both, I said, anything can happen.
08:31Jennifer now.
08:32Here they go.
08:33It's going to be an even race.
08:33Starting over.
08:35They both fell down to the bottom, which means their score starts over now at zero as the clock turns 123.
08:41Here we go.
08:43A few more seconds left.
08:45They want to get their whole body into a new zone for five points.
08:47And time is up.
08:49Time is up.
08:50An unbelievable scenario we had here.
08:53Let's go to Peggy now to get the official score.
08:56Lauren with the red team earns five points.
08:59And Jennifer with the blue team earns zero.
09:02All right.
09:04Okay.
09:05That means red team 35, blue team zero.
09:08Maria is standing by with a bonus question.
09:10Our contenders have finished their first physical challenge, and now it's time for their mental challenge.
09:15The subject they'll be quizzed on is communicable diseases.
09:17Since the red team won our first event, they get to choose which question they want to answer.
09:21So which one will it be?
09:22Question A or question B?
09:23A.
09:24Question A.
09:25Now remember, if you get this right, 25 points to your team's total score and only five seconds to answer.
09:29What are some of the best ways to avoid contracting a communicable disease?
09:39I'm sorry.
09:40What we were looking for was be careful what you touch, lead a healthy lifestyle, get plenty of exercise, something in that area.
09:45Blue team, here's your chance for 25 points, and remember only five seconds to answer.
09:50What are some microscopic organisms that can cause a disease?
09:57Bacterian virus?
09:59That's correct.
10:0025 points for you guys.
10:02Congratulations.
10:03Good job to both teams.
10:04Ryan?
10:05The red team may be winning, but there's still plenty of time for the blue team to catch up when all of our contenders battle it out on our bodybuilding bungee.
10:12It's called Bones.
10:13It's next.
10:13Don't move.
10:15So, you want to know why your knuckles crack?
10:17Well, I sure do.
10:18There's a fluid around the joints of your finger bones.
10:20When you stretch your fingers, the pressure on the fluid changes.
10:23Little bubbles form in the fluid, and they pop.
10:25Want to crack the same knuckle again?
10:27Well, I got news for you.
10:28It takes about 15 minutes for the fluid to return to normal.
10:31So, go ahead, practice.
10:33That's if you want to.
10:35We're back for the second half of Gladiators 2000, where the red team is leading 35 to 25.
10:40Now, you might think that getting the chance to play these Gladiator games would be enough reward for our contenders, but there's more.
10:47They're also playing for some really great prizes for themselves and their schools.
10:50But before we can give away any of those prizes, we've got a lot more Gladiators 2000 ahead, like this next piece on learning, intelligence, and, uh, uh, oh, yeah, memory, I think.
11:00Yeah, memory, yeah.
11:01Today, we're going to talk about memory.
11:04Memory is the ability to store things we learn and experience in our lives.
11:08And to do so, I've asked Chad to play a little game with me.
11:11I've got three shells and one red ball.
11:14All I want you to do is follow the ball as I move it around.
11:17Now, subconsciously, you might think I'm going to try to trick you.
11:20What do you mean by subconscious?
11:22The subconscious is part of the mind we're unaware of.
11:24It affects the way we behave without realizing it.
11:27Now, see if you can keep track of the ball.
11:31Memory involves three stages.
11:34First, the mind receives the information.
11:37In this case, which shell the ball is under.
11:40Second, the mind stores the information.
11:43Third, the mind retrieves the information when we need it.
11:47Do you know where the ball is?
11:48If my memory serves me correctly, it's right here.
11:53Yes.
11:54Another type of memory is sensor memory.
11:56Sensor memory is a memory of the world around us at any one moment,
11:59which reminds you how to lift the shell without knocking over the entire table.
12:04All right, come on.
12:04One more time.
12:05I'm feeling lucky.
12:07Okay.
12:07Now, keep your eye on the ball.
12:15Which one is it?
12:17This one.
12:18Forgot, huh?
12:21I guess maybe you're suffering from amnesia.
12:24Amnesia is a sudden loss of memory.
12:25It can be caused by a sudden shock, but there usually is no apparent cause.
12:33Hey, you were cheating.
12:36Well, I don't like being called a cheater.
12:38And Chad, pal, let me tell you, I'll always remember that you called me a name.
12:44That's because something that leaves a mark on your mind is likely to stay in your long-term memory,
12:49as opposed to your short-term memory, which only lasts for about 30 seconds.
12:54Just long enough to keep track of that little red bone.
13:00Muscles and bones.
13:01That's what this event is all about.
13:03Now, we need muscles to play it, and we're using bones to see who wins.
13:05It is called bones, and for this event, both teams will compete at the same time.
13:10Spended above the arena floor is a bag of giant bones.
13:12Most healthy people have about 206 bones, but we've divided them into 12 different groups for this event.
13:17With both teammates harnessed into elastic bungee cords at opposite ends of the playing field,
13:22the object is for one player to grab a bone group, stretch as far as they can on their bungee cord,
13:26and hand it off to the teammate, who's also stretched to the limit.
13:29Once the bones are handed off, the teammate must construct a giant gladiator skeleton in the correct order.
13:34Now, for every group of bones they successfully attach to the growing skeleton in the correct position,
13:38the team will earn five points.
13:40All right, blue team ready.
13:42Red team in place.
13:44Let's do it!
13:49The bone's dropping down now.
13:50You've got to pick them up, stretch them across to your partner.
13:53Partners, you've got to put them up on the skeleton.
13:55Freddie and Jennifer on the blue team.
13:56Lauren and Jared on the red team.
13:59There goes Freddie, putting up the radius.
14:01Oh, I don't know if you can get them in the right place there for five points.
14:03This game moves so fast, but just to let you know,
14:06Jennifer and Jared doing the picking, Freddie and Lauren doing the building.
14:11Two famers up there.
14:12Now, here comes the exchange, trying to get the rib cage across.
14:14Notice the contenders are attached to the bungees there.
14:16They've got to stretch across.
14:17And if you go too far, you get snapped right back.
14:19Gladiator allowed to help them up there, but can't tell them where the bones go.
14:22You see the gladiators in place?
14:24Here comes the exchange from the red team.
14:26Stretching.
14:28Let's see, for five points, puts the lower leg down there.
14:30Look at this pull here.
14:32Stretching again.
14:33I see a radius on and trying to be tossed across.
14:35Come on, guys.
14:36Pull it.
14:36And then, whoa.
14:37Oh, and he snaps right back.
14:39That's what these things do.
14:40They've got to force.
14:41They'll bring you right back where you came from if you pull too hard.
14:44That's what's the challenge in this game.
14:46If you go too far, you get pulled right back.
14:48Freddie now with the lower leg as the whistle blows.
14:51And now let's go to Peggy, who's got the official results.
14:53He's tired.
14:55We have the red team over here on the right side placing eight bones correctly for a score
15:00of 40 points.
15:01The blue team placing six bones, but only five of them correctly.
15:05The pelvis is upside down.
15:07We see 25 points.
15:10And now let's go to Ryan for bonus question.
15:11Ryan.
15:12Our contenders have finished their second physical challenge, so now it's time for the bonus question.
15:17The subject is memory, learning, and intelligence.
15:20Now, if they get it right, it's 25 points to the team's total score.
15:24Red team, since you won the Bones event, you get to choose first, question A or question B.
15:27Remember, only five seconds to answer the question, all right?
15:30What's it going to be?
15:31B.
15:32It's going to be B.
15:33Here we go.
15:35About how long does short-term memory last?
15:3918.
15:40Seven seconds.
15:41Oh, I'm sorry.
15:42That's incorrect.
15:43We're looking for 30 seconds, about 30 seconds.
15:46Short-term memory, about 30 seconds.
15:48Now, blue team, for 25 points, answer this question correctly.
15:51Here we go.
15:52A sudden loss of memory is known as what?
15:54Amnesia.
15:55There you go, right off the bat.
15:57Blue team, 25 points there.
16:00Amnesia was the correct answer.
16:02Maria.
16:02At the end of two events, the score is tied at 75 points each.
16:06In just a few minutes, all that can change, because up next, we've got our final event.
16:10It's the Eliminator.
16:12So don't go away.
16:13Folks, it all comes down to this right here.
16:23It's the Eliminator, and the name pretty much says it all.
16:26Even though Ryan and I heard it was tough, we decided to find out for ourselves.
16:30The Eliminator starts with a climb up the ladder.
16:33Next, a giant slide to a row of hanging rings and our first question board.
16:37To add 25 points to your score, choose the correct answer by selecting one of our treacherous
16:41rolling logs.
16:43Next, a razor-sharp high-speed turn and a jump down takes you to the question room for
16:47our second question.
16:48A wrong answer here means a locked door and lost time.
16:51But get it right, earn 25 points, and move on to quickly tag your partner.
16:56Contender number two has to climb over a row of hurdles on their way to question number
16:59three.
17:00Choosing an answer here means climbing the correct rope over our glass wall and then racing up
17:05the moving treadmill.
17:05It'll take skill and balance to get to the top where the final question board awaits our
17:10contender.
17:11Answer this question by picking one of the two swinging ropes, and it's hang-on time for
17:15a ride through the barrier to the finish line.
17:18The team with the fastest time will receive a bonus of 50 points, which should determine
17:21who wins today's super cool prize package.
17:25So now, it is time for the Eliminator!
17:32Since the vote team is behind, they'll face the Eliminator first.
17:35Jennifer will start the relay race, and Freddie will pick up in the middle for the final
17:38push to the finish line.
17:40Okay.
17:41At the starting line, the blue team is ready.
17:42We got the high sign.
17:43Peggy, give me the high sign.
17:44Thank you so much.
17:45And Peggy is ready.
17:46Peggy is now ready.
17:47Let's do this thing!
17:48All right, Peggy started off.
17:50Now Jennifer is scaling up the ladder.
17:52She will get to the top, then slide down to the plank, to the platform, to the rings, and
17:55the first question.
17:56No problem up the ladder.
17:58Great job.
17:59Swing and slide right down to the bottom.
18:01Hey, ho!
18:02Why use your feet?
18:03Don't stop yourself at your feet when you can use another part.
18:05On to the rings.
18:06You can see the crowd cheering her on.
18:08Pom-poms waving, people cheering.
18:11The swings going across the pit.
18:13Nice ease there.
18:14Good job.
18:15Freestyle motion like you would in swimming.
18:17Good rhythm.
18:18Down to the first question for 25 points.
18:19The subconscious is part of the mind that rules our actions or we're not aware of.
18:22Oh, missed that.
18:23The correct answer is we are not aware of.
18:25No points there, but nice job over the log.
18:28Here we come now.
18:29We're gonna come down.
18:30On to the question room.
18:32Where question number two awaits us.
18:35And it says...
18:36What's the poisonous substance produced by bacteria, coxins or fungus?
18:40Chooses fungus.
18:41Is it open?
18:42No.
18:43It's not open, so she'll lose time, but she won't lose any points there.
18:46Here we go now.
18:47Opening the door.
18:48Freddie standing by for the second half of the eliminator.
18:50Gets the tag now.
18:51Hits the hurdles!
18:52Up and over.
18:54Using the hop technique.
18:55Hop, hop.
18:56There we go.
18:57Get this question right here.
