00:00Let's start with a significant bit of news out of Detroit and Houston, where the Texans
00:06have landed David Montgomery from the Lions.
00:10This one-two punch of Monty and Gibbs had been a force for some time, though this past
00:17year with Montgomery getting a little banged up and Gibbs getting another year of just
00:22improvement, I guess, they started to pull away from one another.
00:27Houston, in desperate need of help at the running back position, how do you feel about
00:34them landing David Montgomery here?
00:36Well, I think it's an added upgrade to the offense.
00:39They did have Joe Mixon a couple of years ago, didn't play all of last year, and they released
00:45him.
00:45They had Woody Marks and Nick Chubb, but certainly not home run hitters.
00:50David Montgomery is still productive and can catch the football out of the backfield.
00:54He's a dominant goal line back, and with that offense with C.J. Stroud, I think it's an
01:00upgrade.
01:00I still think they should be in the market for a more explosive home run hitter, but he's
01:06added in that offense, I think will benefit Houston moving forward.
01:10Does he change them, Kevin, from all of a sudden, let's say a 10 or an 11-win football team
01:15to
01:15potentially a 14-win football team?
01:18We know, but you solidify the rushing attack, and we know that's what D'Amico Ryans and
01:23that staff want to do.
01:25They want to run the football.
01:26They want to sustain drives, keep opposing offenses on the sidelines, and he helps that
01:32offense do that in 2026.
01:35You know, I think for Houston, I am a little conflicted, Joe, in that I think they absolutely
01:44are right to try and upgrade the running back room.
01:47We don't know if we'll ever see Joe Mixon again.
01:50Nick Chubb, unfortunately, has had his career derailed through injury, and Woody Marks is
01:56a fine player.
01:58Joe, I don't think he's an elite, soon-to-be elite running back, but I think about this
02:03Texans season, and I think you'll agree with this, right, because you specifically take
02:07a lot of issues with how they operate offensively.
02:09And I think to what was their defining play call, and it was when on third and one, and
02:16it didn't work, and on fourth and one, they just handed it up the gun.
02:20And getting David Montgomery feels as if their lesson isn't, or offensive line isn't good,
02:27or our play calling is safe, or our play calling is predictable.
02:31No, no, no.
02:31We just need a different guy who can bulldoze Joe for one singular yard.
02:37Montgomery is better at that, but I still worry about the infrastructure of Houston's
02:42offense.
02:43I agree with you, and I think when you look at their skilled players and take the running
02:48backs out of it for just one second, right, they have Nico Collins that could be potentially
02:53as dominant as any pure number one, as long as he could stay healthy, right?
02:58But then they have more pedestrian wide receivers.
03:01Noel and Higgins are good.
03:03They're certainly not elite.
03:05Tank Dell's on schedule, at least to play potentially this year.
03:09If he could bounce back to the player that he was pre-injury, now you're cooking, right?
03:15They still need to open up the offense as it relates to the wide receivers and throw it
03:20first to open up the rushing attack.
03:22But David Montgomery helps them in the passing game too, Kevin.
03:26I think he's a better receiver than Woody Marks.
03:28He's certainly a better receiver at this point in his career than Nick Chubb.
03:32Nick Chubb is more at the back nine than he is anything else.
03:36He could be maybe an added body later in the season.
03:40But David Montgomery is an upgrade from Nick Chubb.
03:43But to your point, if they're expecting David Montgomery to be like a Joe Mixon-esque type
03:50of running back the way he was a couple of years ago for this team, that's not the type
03:55of running back Montgomery is at this point in his career.
