00:00There's going to be a lot of different ways we try and assess what a David Montgomery departure means for
00:05Detroit.
00:07One area I think it could mean for us as bettors is Jameer Gibbs being easily inside the top five,
00:16maybe the favorite for offensive player of the year when that market comes out.
00:22To give people an idea, Montgomery had still 158 carries this season, eight rushing touchdowns.
00:32So I know this will sound lofty, but is it possible that Jameer Gibbs next year pushes for 20 total
00:41touchdowns?
00:42Let's bring the receiving into a Joe. I mean, he had 18 total touchdowns this year.
00:46I think it's on the board, 1,500 rushing yards. I think we're looking at Gibbs without a doubt having
00:53top three offensive player of the year odds,
00:55unless Detroit brings in another bruiser to pair with him.
00:59Well, I think they could address it in the upcoming draft. That's a possibility with a later round draft pick.
01:06You know, running back is always an area where you can add a free agent or a late round draft
01:11pick that, you know, is productive in year number one.
01:14So that's a possibility. But to your point, when we talk about Jameer Gibbs and we talk about the explosiveness
01:20and we talk about the breakaway ability to take games over, I think it's similar to the way Alvin Kamara
01:27was in the receiving game with Drew Brees for years, right?
01:31He's similar to Saquon Barkley. He could be that 2,000-yard rusher and also added 800 yards in the
01:38receiving game.
01:39He is that important to that offense. When Jameer Gibbs touches the football, he's a threat to go the distance
01:48every single time because of his breakaway ability.
01:52He has great vision. Yards after contact is there, so he runs bigger than his size.
01:58Again, do they want to load him up earlier in the year? No. I think they will still split carries.
02:04But as they make a playoff run, it's similar to what they had with Philadelphia with Saquon. Ride the beast
02:11till he wins you a title.
02:13I think what is difficult, though, and I think you really hit on it well, because he is so important
02:20to their pass-catching game,
02:22can they really give him another 50, 60, 80 carries? Like, 400 touches is a lot, because I think we
02:32all know whenever the time comes,
02:36Jameer Gibbs will reset the running back market, right? He or Bijan, they're both going to get paid big, big
02:41-time money from their franchises.
02:44You don't want to rip all the tread off those tires beforehand.
02:49So I think this is going to be very interesting to see how Detroit looks to address a Montgomery light.
03:00Because they always liked it. It might have been sometimes annoying for us, Joe, where we're like,
03:05give the ball to Gibbs, like, give the ball to Gibbs.
03:07But there was a reason, obviously, for how they approached this.
03:13Well, we talk about shelf life. For the running backs, it's very short in the NFL.
03:18And when you're given a guy that's built around 215 pounds, per se, the football, not just in the running
03:25game,
03:26but in the passing attack, too, there's the potential to take multiple hits on a frame that maybe can't take
03:32it.
03:32He's not Derrick Henry's type of size, right?
03:35So, again, I think he'll have 80% of the productivity this year, Kevin.
03:39But I do expect Detroit to utilize a free agent or a draft pick in the upcoming draft to take
03:46away some carries from Jameer Gibbs.
