00:00
because of all the talk about who's gone
00:02
from that offensive coaching staff
00:05
and even the defensive coaching staff
00:06
with Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn now being head coaches.
00:10
Well, maybe we learned something here.
00:14
Maybe.
00:15
I mean, it's a Hall of Fame game,
00:16
but boy, the Lions looked awful.
00:19
I mean, they really, really did.
00:21
Where are you right now on this Detroit Lions team
00:23
with all of this turnover?
00:25
Good, not great.
00:26
And here's where I may shock you.
00:28
And we did learn something.
00:29
Kyle Allen is absolutely terrible.
00:31
He should not even be a backup quarterback in the league.
00:33
Okay.
00:34
91 yards, two interceptions,
00:35
going back to his days at Texas A&M.
00:38
When I look at this team
00:39
and you look at the playmakers that they have offensively,
00:43
Goff, Jameer Gibbs, St. Brown, and Jamison Williams,
00:46
they could score with anyone.
00:48
Are they going to be as explosive now without Ben Johnson,
00:52
even though it might be the same system,
00:54
might be the same scheme,
00:55
when you have a new OC, new DC,
00:58
that's a huge test to overcome.
01:01
And Philadelphia started 10-1 a couple of years ago
01:04
and limped to a 1-5 record at the end of the regular season
01:07
and got knocked and bounced by your Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
01:11
Right?
01:11
You know that as well as anybody.
01:13
And people will say, well, it doesn't matter.
01:14
They're on the staff.
01:15
Yeah, but coordinators need to understand how that talent responds.
01:19
They have to call a game plan around that talent,
01:21
and they have to get into a rhythm.
01:23
And sometimes that could happen a couple games in.
01:26
It could happen a month in.
01:28
Might never happen.
01:29
And that's where I think the inconsistency can lie in the Detroit Lions
01:33
as it relates to a 14, a 15-win football team,
01:37
number one in the NFC like they were last year.
01:40
I think they have the potential, believe it or not,
01:42
to be a 10-win football team.
01:44
I think potentially Green Bay could catch them in the division.
01:47
I really believe that.
01:49
And I would bet at 2-1 that they have a better shot to miss the playoffs
01:52
than make the playoffs.
01:54
I'm willing to make that bet because I think there's a lot of pressure
01:58
on this team.
01:58
And we're not talking about, hear me out, San Francisco or Philadelphia,
02:04
a storied franchise.
02:05
We are talking about the Detroit Lions that have had success under Dan Campbell.
02:11
They haven't won a Super Bowl, haven't even played in it.
02:14
They got to the pinnacle, had San Francisco dead to rights,
02:18
and they can't put them away.
02:20
And now they lose last year after the first round, number one seed.
02:25
And now there's pressure on to get back there.
02:28
I think they're regressing.
02:29
Yeah, I think the Philly comparisons, it can kind of go both ways
02:35
because there's this expected step back.
02:39
We know there's offensive line exits, right?
02:41
Jason Kelsey had retired from Philadelphia.
02:44
We know that.
02:45
We saw the Ragnar retirement, plus Seitler moving on as well,
02:48
joining Tennessee.
02:50
There's the coordinator overhaul.
02:52
There's a defense that was really, really bad.
02:55
But I look at it, Joe, and there's a lot of room for improvement
02:58
with the double safety pairing.
03:01
Terion Arnold, who was supposed to be very good at Alabama,
03:03
could maybe get a year-two leap.
03:05
Getting Aiden Hutchinson is important.
03:07
They spent their first-round draft pick on a defensive tackle
03:09
in Williams out of Ohio State.
03:11
So I don't worry about Aaron Glenn's departure as much
03:15
because I just think there's more talent ultimately.
03:17
And I don't know if I was ever fully sold on Aaron Glenn,
03:20
the defensive coordinator, even if I think he can be good for the Jets.
03:24
But the difference is Philly's coordinator turnover two seasons ago
03:29
is because they had to fire everybody because they were all bad.
03:31
But when Philly lost coordinators, because they were great in Gannon and Steikton,
03:37
they were awful.
03:38
And that's the comparison for what Detroit walks into.
03:42
And that's where the offensive line stuff is a little more concerning
03:46
because now what if Jared Goff doesn't have the protection
03:50
or the overseer in Ben Johnson?
