00:00The government says it can take legal action against the top figures behind major social
00:06media platforms, even if they are based outside the country, thanks to a new online safety law,
00:12which took effect on January 1st. Deputy Communications Minister Tioni Ching said
00:18under the law, any messaging or social media service with 8 million or more users in the
00:23country would be deemed registered with the government. She told the Dewan Rakia that
00:29this is to ensure that all messaging and social media services offered to users in Malaysia
00:34operate in line with our laws and rules.
00:38Teo said licensed platforms were required to comply with terms and instructions given by the
00:43Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and that failure to obey could lead to legal action.
