00:00:17Let's start talking about this masterpiece
00:00:20This epic, this...
00:00:22You're sounding wry, Michael
00:00:24But this is my favorite movie
00:00:26of all the ones we did
00:00:28Incidentally, right here
00:00:29We're Ben Moore lifting this thing out
00:00:31and throwing it in the ditch
00:00:31and jumping in
00:00:33Turned out we had a rattlesnake in that ditch
00:00:36And too bad it didn't bite him
00:00:38I swear
00:00:40But no, this was certainly
00:00:42the favorite of the seven pictures
00:00:45that Herschel and I did together
00:00:47in our partnership
00:00:49and certainly was
00:00:50by the standards of exploitation
00:00:53was a very spectacular picture
00:00:56I can remember when this picture
00:00:59was finished and I sent it out for Dan Sonney
00:01:01to look at
00:01:03for the 13 Western States rights
00:01:05he called me up and said
00:01:07that thing looks like it was made at MGM
00:01:09I mean by the standards of others
00:01:11Yeah, more is grocery market
00:01:13You know, we have had many, many times
00:01:16when people ask us what this picture cost
00:01:17we would be somewhat obfuscatory
00:01:19and say that it costs
00:01:21oh, under half a million
00:01:23and they'd say, oh, all right
00:01:24uh-huh
00:01:24They had no idea
00:01:26because this does have production value
00:01:28Now here is our famous
00:01:29Famous banner
00:01:30Pleasant Valley Centennial
00:01:32which we set up in St. Cloud, Florida
00:01:34We came out of a little hotel one day
00:01:36and here were these two old guys
00:01:37because in those days
00:01:38St. Cloud was not part of the Disney empire
00:01:40it was a sleepy little retirement village
00:01:43These fellows were looking at this banner up there
00:01:46and one said to the other
00:01:48I wonder why this Pleasant Valley
00:01:51is having its centennial here
00:01:52St. Cloud
00:01:54And the other one
00:01:54was about a year before
00:01:56the year we had on the banner
00:01:57He says, I wonder why
00:01:58they put their banner up so early
00:02:01But this town really did pitch in
00:02:03St. Cloud
00:02:04Does this town still exist here?
00:02:06Oh, yes
00:02:07St. Cloud and Kissimmee
00:02:08are the two adjuncts now to Disney World
00:02:11What about the street?
00:02:12I had not been back there
00:02:14so I don't know

00:02:22The fellow on the guitar

00:02:36The reason I'm singing this theme song, Jim
00:02:39is because we didn't want
00:02:40our standard reason
00:02:42we didn't want to pay anybody else
00:02:43and it's done in that Rex Harrison manner

00:02:49where it's not really the melody
00:02:50but there's a story you should know
00:02:53from a hundred years ago
00:02:54and it came off
00:02:56I think very, very well
00:02:58You remember we went over to the little recording studio
00:03:00in Orlando
00:03:02and recorded the thing that night
00:03:04We had everybody in the cast and crew
00:03:06to go, yee-haw!
00:03:09And it did work
00:03:10To this day, I will show up someplace
00:03:13and someone will start with a yee-haw on me
00:03:16From my understanding, this came out as a single
00:03:19A 45 at one point
00:03:21Do you know about that?
00:03:22I may have known that at one time
00:03:24I know that it now exists on a record
00:03:26that Rhino or somebody has put out
00:03:29It's on a big LP

00:03:39were a huge step above the kind of titles
00:03:41we did in a movie like Blood Feast
00:03:43These were professionally made titles
00:03:44Because here we knew
00:03:46that we had discovered a mother load
00:03:50of a certain kind of motion picture
00:03:54And we were determined in this case
00:03:56to have two elements that we didn't have in Blood Feast
00:03:59One was production value
00:04:01And the other was attention to acting
00:04:04And I think it paid off in both directions
00:04:07This is about, this whole movie
00:04:09is about a small southern town
00:04:11that gets even for the Civil War
00:04:13That's Vincent Santo, I think his name is
00:04:15He dyed his hair
00:04:16This scene right here still kills him
00:04:18Where the implied
00:04:20Notice the freeze frame
00:04:23Again, we would not have done it
00:04:25That's my credit coming over the noose
00:04:26But basically
00:04:28I had seen a show in New York
00:04:30called Brigadoon
00:04:31And I'd come back
00:04:32and I was telling Herschel
00:04:33all about this show
00:04:35about this little Scottish town
00:04:37that came to life every hundred years
00:04:39And he said
00:04:41that would work with a little southern town
00:04:43that came to life
00:04:44to revenge the action
00:04:47of some renegade Yankees
00:04:48who had wiped out the town
00:04:50And that's where the story came from
00:04:52And I think
00:04:53in two or three days
00:04:55Herschel came back
00:04:55and we had the script
00:04:56for 2,000 Maniacs
00:04:59And this one did work
00:05:00All the characters in this
00:05:02Here's Ben Moore
00:05:03who was a problem
00:05:04of personality
00:05:05But a pretty good little actor
00:05:07Fine actor
00:05:08A pretty good little actor
00:05:09He would get into a role
00:05:11even the way he stands
00:05:12Look at the way he has his hands
00:05:15on the side of his father
00:05:16At the time he was a Marine
00:05:18He was an enlisted Marine
00:05:19And he lived up in Newburgh
00:05:21McCoy Air Force Base
00:05:22Or something
00:05:22And he'd been in the Air Force
00:05:23He spent his whole life
00:05:24in the military
00:05:26But he finally got out
00:05:28He came out to Hollywood
00:05:30I used him in She Freak
00:05:32I used him in Suburban Roulette
00:05:34That's right
00:05:34You had him in Suburban Roulette
00:05:35But I think his whole acting career
00:05:39No, it was in something else
00:05:41that I saw not too long ago
00:05:43on cable
00:05:44A picture that neither you
00:05:45nor I made
00:05:46that he was in
00:05:47Something that took place
00:05:49on a beach
00:05:49And he was the villain
00:05:56But he was a pretty
00:05:58In fact, most of the cast
00:06:00of this thing
00:06:01That's where he practically
00:06:03stepped on a rattlesnake
00:06:04You see, Ben was a good actor
00:06:06He stayed in character
00:06:06And I heard somebody
00:06:07later on say
00:06:08Here's a snake down here
00:06:09I said, we're not going to pay him
00:06:12Connie Mason is driving
00:06:14And that was always
00:06:15a perilous proposition
00:06:17Jerry Eden had
00:06:19rebooted these cars
00:06:20from some local dealer
00:06:21in exchange for having
00:06:22the cars in the movie
00:06:24An early example

00:07:36but the effect of the wind
00:07:38from the car going past
00:07:39blew that sign over
00:07:40It was perfect
00:07:41Notice this effect
00:07:42that dissolved
00:07:43You can tell
00:07:44a laboratory dissolved
00:07:46from our camera dissolve
00:07:47because the color
00:07:48changed slightly
00:07:49The town of St. Cloud
00:07:51was so cooperative
00:07:52they gave us
00:07:53a cherry picker
00:07:55to give us this high shot
00:07:57Everybody in the town
00:07:58practically was in this scene
00:08:00which we shot on a Sunday
00:08:01to get as many people out
00:08:03as we possibly could
00:08:04In fact, it was a small town
00:08:06We originally had titled
00:08:07this thing 5,000 Maniacs
00:08:09Until we got to
00:08:09Until we got there
00:08:10And we found it was
00:08:11Oh, there weren't that many
00:08:12So we called it 2,000 Maniacs
00:08:13We think it's a little
00:08:14more intimate anyway
00:08:15We had taken over
00:08:16the whole
00:08:17this old hotel
00:08:18And we took it over
00:08:20Yeah
00:08:20All the rooms
00:08:21We rented
00:08:21Now, how'd you guys
00:08:22find this place?
00:08:24It's just a little speck
00:08:25on the map
00:08:26It's all it is
00:08:26is a little speck
00:08:27on the map
00:08:27And we were looking
00:08:28and Dave was
00:08:30doing some business
00:08:31in Charlotte
00:08:33because we had determined
00:08:35to shoot this
00:08:35in the Orlando area
00:08:37And there were two towns
00:08:38that were recommended to us
00:08:39One was St. Cloud
00:08:40and the other was Kissimmee
00:08:42Kissimmee
00:08:42And so I went to St. Cloud
00:08:45and I talked to the mayor
00:08:46there
00:08:46who was absolutely
00:08:48delighted
00:08:49that we were going
00:08:49to shoot a movie
00:08:50in his town
00:08:51We made up a bunch
00:08:52of credits
00:08:52because the only thing
00:08:53we really had to point
00:08:54to at that time
00:08:55was Blood Feast
00:08:56I didn't want to do that
00:08:57but once they got
00:08:58into the spirit
00:08:59of this
00:09:00this town could not
00:09:01have been more cooperative
00:09:03as I'll show you
00:09:04when we have that scene
00:09:05at old Teeter and Rock
00:09:07Now there's Jeffrey Allen
00:09:08real name
00:09:08Talkie Blank
00:09:09at the left edge
00:09:11He's the mayor
00:09:12and you talk about
00:09:13a good actor

00:10:20just opened its doors

00:10:22rolled out the red carpet

00:10:30who gets killed
00:10:31early in the picture

00:11:23and somebody had left
00:11:25an 85B filter in it
00:11:28which didn't really show
00:11:29as we looked through it
00:11:30because it looked realistic
00:11:31and we
00:11:32over
00:11:32so that caused it
00:11:33to be one stop off
00:11:35all the way through
00:11:36but there were a handful
00:11:37of shots we had
00:11:38We knew the mix
00:11:39on this picture
00:11:40in Washington
00:11:41at Capitol
00:11:42Yeah
00:11:42We mixed this picture
00:11:43at Capitol
00:11:43Here comes the second car load
00:11:45Now she almost
00:11:46that kid that was
00:11:48in the middle
00:11:49that she almost ran over

00:11:51she had scraped that building
00:11:52and we had to shoot it
00:11:53from one angle only
00:11:54to make sure
00:11:55we didn't show that

00:13:04fairs and circuses

00:18:22that shocked
00:18:23the hell out of me
00:18:24it made my jaw drop
00:18:26I was just like
00:18:27what
00:18:27and it was
00:18:28the surprise aspect
00:18:30of it
00:18:30that made it work
00:18:31so well
00:18:31now that old hotel
00:18:33was one great
00:18:35great location
00:18:36it was
00:18:36they had the world's
00:18:38oldest telephone system
00:18:39which they had replaced
00:18:40but they left
00:18:41all the old stuff
00:18:42in there
00:18:42the old 1920s switchboard
00:18:46where you rang
00:18:47and you turned the crank
00:18:48typical old
00:18:49beat up phone
00:18:50and it looked perfect
00:18:51because we used them
00:18:52all in the scenes
00:19:10and this young fellow
00:19:12who played Shelby's wife
00:19:13he came from Orlando
00:19:14he was a nice kid
00:19:16a pretty fair actor too
00:19:17he was the one
00:19:18we rolled down
00:19:19in the barrel
00:19:21now speaking of the barrel
00:19:22you know the gimmicks
00:19:23in this movie
00:19:24have a very carnival
00:19:25kind of flavor to them
00:19:27well the barrel roll
00:19:28came right out
00:19:29of a fun house
00:19:30the bozo
00:19:34oh the rock
00:19:35the rock
00:19:36barrel roll
00:19:36and we were talking
00:19:37about this picture
00:19:40and my son Bob
00:19:41who came up
00:19:41with the idea
00:19:42of hammering nails
00:19:43through the barrel
00:19:43to roll the guy
00:19:44down the hill
00:19:45and I said uh oh
00:19:46this kid is not
00:19:47going to have
00:19:47that much of a curve
00:19:49but the effect
00:19:50did work
00:19:52and we as
00:19:54here again
00:19:54as always was the case
00:19:56we had a rollicking
00:19:58good time
00:19:58making these things
00:19:59you know the
00:19:59greatest thing
00:20:01we did in this picture
00:20:02was building that rock
00:20:03out of paper mache
00:20:04and that first close up
00:20:06I know Lee Frost
00:20:08when he saw the picture
00:20:09the first time
00:20:10Lee was a very talented
00:20:11director in Los Angeles
00:20:13he said
00:20:14that is a great looking rock
00:20:17here it is
00:20:17up on the top
00:20:18of this platform
00:20:19and you see the target
00:20:21even in paper mache
00:20:23that rock weighed 300 pounds
00:20:24yeah and Herschel
00:20:25was lying under there
00:20:27with an Aeroflakes camera
00:20:28while the damn thing
00:20:29was coming down
00:20:29I wanted the effect
00:20:30and we couldn't get
00:20:31anybody else to lie there
00:20:32and I didn't want
00:20:33to have some insurance
00:20:34claim from an actress
00:20:37I figured if it fell
00:20:38on me I'd heal
00:20:39but it worked out fine
00:20:40did either one of you
00:20:41ever get hurt
00:20:42in one of your movies
00:20:43you know
00:20:43like break a leg
00:20:45I fell off the hood
00:20:46of a convertible
00:20:47in an early movie
00:20:48but it was nothing
00:20:50of any great consequence
00:20:52you know you were
00:20:53a little elusive
00:20:54you guys were a little
00:20:57elusive about the budget
00:20:58what was the budget
00:20:59on this film
00:20:59we know Blood Feast
00:21:01was 24,500
00:21:02oh this was 62,000
00:21:0462,000
00:21:05and that's a lot of money
00:21:06that's like three times
00:21:07oh yeah
00:21:08we had had this conversation
00:21:10and we were firmly committed
00:21:11to making a picture
00:21:13that we could show
00:21:14to people
00:21:15without having to
00:21:17justify what we were doing
00:21:19by saying
00:21:19well you understand
00:21:20why we had to do this
00:21:21but we got no argument
00:21:23from our partners
00:21:24because by that point
00:21:26by the time we started this
00:21:28Blood Feast
00:21:29was an established phenomenon
00:21:31and money was pouring
00:21:33into that office
00:21:34from Blood Feast
00:21:35so when Herzl and I
00:21:37budgeted it out
00:21:38and I went over
00:21:39and said
00:21:39it's going to cost
00:21:41a little over 60,000
00:21:43got no argument
00:21:45the check was written
00:21:46right then and there
00:21:47we noticed this telephone
00:21:48that was on the wall
00:21:49they had painted over it
00:21:50of course it was dead
00:21:51but it was a perfect prop
00:21:53for us
00:21:54how did 2000 Maniacs
00:21:55do at the box office?
00:21:57it didn't do the business
00:21:58Blood Feast did
00:21:58but what it did
00:21:59was something altogether
00:22:00different psychologically
00:22:01and that is
00:22:02it established us
00:22:03as people who knew
00:22:04how to make a picture
00:22:06instead of just
00:22:07two schmucks
00:22:07aiming a camera
00:22:09Blood Feast
00:22:10a lot of people
00:22:11felt was an accident
00:22:11my god
00:22:12look at the ragged pan
00:22:13but in this
00:22:14nobody
00:22:15but you see
00:22:16my philosophy
00:22:18was nobody ever
00:22:19walked out of a theater
00:22:20because of a ragged pan
00:22:21nobody ever asked
00:22:22for their money back
00:22:23but they often
00:22:23walked out of theaters
00:22:24because they were
00:22:25not entertained
00:22:26and they never
00:22:27did that to us
00:22:28you know this movie
00:22:30even today
00:22:30it has a
00:22:32high entertainment value
00:22:33I think
00:22:34I agree with you
00:22:35works from beginning
00:22:36to end
00:22:36it actually
00:22:37actually also captures
00:22:39it's a great time capsule
00:22:40of the south
00:22:41at that moment

00:23:19it kept the gang together
00:23:20and in a case like this
00:23:22where we said
00:23:23alright tonight
00:23:23everybody's going to go
00:23:24to the recording studio
00:23:25in Orlando
00:23:26and give some rebel yells
00:23:29people did
00:23:30they showed up
00:23:32now watch when he goes
00:23:33to the counter
00:23:33and look at that
00:23:34marvelous switchboard
00:23:35that this
00:23:37little girl candy
00:23:39what was it
00:23:40candy
00:23:40she was in
00:23:41Colony Blood Red
00:23:43she was
00:23:44a little girl
00:23:46look at that
00:23:47isn't that marvelous
00:23:48she was a pretty
00:23:50little thing
00:23:50yes

00:24:17pleasurable one

00:24:19also it's like
00:24:20taking place
00:24:21in the part of the world
00:24:22that movies
00:24:23weren't being made
00:24:23so it was really special
00:24:25at the time
00:24:26this was made
00:24:27this was by far
00:24:28the most elaborate
00:24:30film ever done
00:24:31in the
00:24:31whole exploitation
00:24:33genre
00:24:34oh yeah
00:24:34we took trouble
00:24:35with lighting too
00:24:36which I hope you will notice
00:24:37because
00:24:37with our limited
00:24:39number of lights
00:24:40and the fact
00:24:41that if we plugged in
00:24:42one more light
00:24:42we'd blow out
00:24:43the whole hotel
00:24:46this was I think
00:24:49technically
00:24:51and from the viewpoint
00:24:52of acting
00:24:53a very good marriage
00:24:54that we were able
00:24:56to accomplish here
00:24:57now did it occur to you

00:25:00there was a lot
00:25:01of other people
00:25:01in the same game
00:25:02but very few
00:25:04gore movies
00:25:06at least those

00:25:23so we had
00:25:24two pictures
00:25:25under our belt
00:25:26before our
00:25:27competitors
00:25:28our imitators
00:25:29ever discovered gore
00:25:31we had both
00:25:32of these pictures
00:25:33out and in release
00:25:34but the motion picture
00:25:35industry was
00:25:36and is a very
00:25:37small fraternity
00:25:38and you can't
00:25:39have a hit
00:25:40and keep it secret
00:25:41and you can't
00:25:41have a flop
00:25:42and keep it secret
00:25:44once we had
00:25:45released
00:25:46or I should
00:25:47might say
00:25:47excreted
00:25:48Blood Feast
00:25:49the word
00:25:50hit the industry
00:25:51like literally
00:25:52like a cannonball
00:25:53don't forget
00:25:54that picture
00:25:54was reviewed
00:25:55in Variety
00:25:56okay the reviews
00:25:57were devastating
00:25:58but the grosses
00:25:59weren't
00:26:00the numbers
00:26:00started coming in
00:26:01people are starting
00:26:02to say
00:26:03what is this thing
00:26:04and I'm suddenly
00:26:05getting calls
00:26:06from exhibitors
00:26:07I never heard of
00:26:08that who's your
00:26:09distributor in Montana
00:26:11who's your distributor
00:26:12in this place
00:26:16the people we were
00:26:17pleading with
00:26:18to handle our pictures
00:26:18before were suddenly
00:26:19all over us
00:26:20that's another indication
00:26:21by the way
00:26:22you got a successful
00:26:22picture
00:26:23now when the movie
00:26:24when you got it
00:26:24in the can
00:26:25and you got it
00:26:25out in distribution
00:26:26you never took
00:26:27Blood Feast
00:26:27and doubled it up
00:26:28with 2008
00:26:29we didn't
00:26:30no
00:26:30as I said
00:26:32before
00:26:33that was after
00:26:35both Herschel
00:26:35and I had gotten

00:26:38game with
00:26:39the pictures
00:26:40that we had
00:26:41done together
00:26:41and a
00:26:42distributor

00:26:44bought all
00:26:45of the rights
00:26:46to the pictures
00:26:47came up with
00:26:47the idea
00:26:48of putting
00:26:49the three of them
00:26:49together
00:26:50which was
00:26:50a waste
00:26:51a total waste
00:26:53now here's
00:26:54where we shock
00:26:55the audience
00:26:55out of their
00:26:56chairs

00:26:58far
